[Bug 1420240] Re: Battery stats not displayed properly

2015-03-24 Thread Tim
From those numbers It looks like upower is calculating the percentage
based on engery-full-design which was the original capacity of your
battery rather than the current energy-full.

Reassigning to upower since gnome is just doing what its told. Could
well be a kernel bug though.

reassigning to gnome-session, although the issue seems to be triggered

seems to come from a buggy ubuntu patch in gnome-session.

[Bug 1385572] Re: gnome-session not shutting down cleanly

2015-03-09 Thread Tim
** Description changed:

- We have had reports going back to 13.10 that gnome-shell extensions are
- disabled after restart (LP: #1236749), I've only just managed to
- reproduce this and have discovered that gnome-session is not shutting
- down cleanly.
+ [Impact]
+ We have had reports going back to 13.10 that gnome-shell extensions are
disabled after restart (LP: #1236749), this has probably been our #1 unresolved
bug for the last few cycles. While this is the main user visible bug probably
other bugs caused by this for example (BGO: #745707)

- Basically, X gets shutdown, which causes gnome-shell to abort, following
- this gnome-session tries to respawn gnome-shell which fails and due to
- this failure disables all shell extensions. I don't know enough about
- upstart to really understand what is going on but it appears this also
- affects unity and it just hasnt been noticed since there are probably no
- such side-effects happening there.
+ The cause was tracked down to gnome-session not shutting down cleanly
+ under upstart. Although the underlying issue seems to be the order in
+ which upstart takes down the various components in a user session, the
+ side-effects themselves appear to be caused by gnome-session continuing
+ to run when it should in fact be shutdown

- Filing this against upstart since this is not reproducible when using
- systemd init, though it may well be a bug in gnome-session, but related
- to upstart user sessions.
+ The fix updates the 103_kill_the_fail_whale.patch to force shutdown of
+ gnome-session. This is inline with the fix upstream for (BGO: #745707)
+ also.

- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04

- UpstartBugCategory: Session
- UpstartRunningSessionCount: 1
- UpstartRunningSessionVersion: upstart 1.13.2
- UpstartRunningSystemVersion: init (upstart 1.13.2)
+ [ Test Case ]
+ 1. Load gdm
+ 2. Login to gnome-shell using GNOME from the session list
+ 3. enable some extensions
+ 4. reboot system from user menu.
+ 5. login again to find extensions disabled.
+
+ [ Regression Potential ]
+ Very low, the fail whale is meant to be fatal. The upstream dialog that is
disabled in ubuntu does in fact cause gnome-session to get shutdown.

[Bug 1429248] [NEW] gedit crashes frequently - every 10min or so

2015-03-06 Thread Tim K
Public bug reported:

Here's the trace:

$ gedit

(gedit:20735): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gedit' received an X Window System
error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length erro'.
  (Details: serial 23634806 error_code 16 request_code 18 (core protocol)
minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 1419623] [NEW] systemd init is no mounting drives from fstab

2015-02-08 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

This seems to have been triggered by the glib update on ubuntu-desktop
ppa. No partitions from fstab (apart from root of course) are getting
mounted at boot. This is just a little problematic when /home is on a
different partition!

[Bug 1418232] Re: running gnome-settings-daemon causes my mouse cursor to disappear

2015-02-04 Thread Tim
gnome-settings-daemon requires idle monitors which are provided by
mutter, for the cursor plugin to work correctly. I think you probably
want to use unity-settings-daemon here, it has its own idle monitor.
This was a fork of gnome-settings-daemon 3.8 and should provide much
better support for legacy/gtk2 DE's

chris, you need to test with the actual package in trusty
(1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.6 ), that will probably mean you need to purge the
ppa or use a vm

gnome-user-guide would make up the bulk of that 46MB, and that probably

2015-02-02 Thread Tim
3.14.x with menu bar patch is on gnome3 ppa now (instead of gnome3-staging),
that is what will end up in vivid. The menubar will only apply on !GNOME
desktops.
Not sure any preferences were removed they were just most around with the new

2015-01-30 Thread Tim
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1379446 ***

** Description changed:

- [Impact]
- When starting deja-dup through the gnome-control-center it crashes. This is
caused by an ABI break in libgnome-control-center. Which is an Ubuntu-ism,

- [Regression potential]
- Low, this is just a simple rebuild to pick up the new ABI in
libgnome-control-center. It will cause the libunity-control-center plugin to
also be rebuilt but there were no changes there, so that should be fine.

[Bug 1414256] [NEW] split wayland session into its own package

2015-01-23 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu GNOME would like to make available an experimental wayland
session, since that is mostly working now. However we don't want to ship
it by default like is currently done in Debian, I don't think its quite
that ready.

This patch creates a new gnome-session-wayland package, which is
incidentally is similar to the way its packaged in Fedora

[Bug 1409436] Re: Networks list not populated in Sharing settings

2015-01-11 Thread Tim
This requires Network Manager 0.9.10 to work properly, that should be
landing this cycle, but if it doesnt we may need to revert per-network
sharing patches.

I uploaded an updated totem to gnome3-staging. grilo stuff should be
sorted now, just needs MIR for grilo-plugins bug #1394731. I added a
titlebar patch though its incomplete at the moment, window controls end
up back in the toolbar after playing a video.

There are some theme issues with the search-bar and popovers (unreadable
fonts etc) using ubuntu gtk theme.

Re: [Bug 1393067] Re: totem 3.14

2014-11-19 Thread Tim
On 18/11/14 20:33, Iain Lane wrote:
Neat, I played with this a bit but didn't get that far, happy to leave
 the work to you. :)

I guess there are a few issues here - here are my thoughts on them.

   - Seems to hard depend on grilo's tracker plugin. I removed the package
dependency and it didn't work very well; couldn't add local media. I think it
might be *good* to use the rest of the plugins, but as we've been shying away
from tracker, this part ought to still be optional for us.
grilo itself is a hard dependency, and grilo-plugins will need an MIR, since
nothing will work without that. tracker use itself could be made
to fall back to grl-filesystem , but it needs gsettings config org.gnome.Totem
filesystem-paths probably set to users home directory.
   - Haven't seen this myself because my system is trackerified, but we'll
need to think about the initial UI in that case. grl-filesystem? too slow? Is
there an 'empty' UI which helps you add local media using a file chooser?
The video tab that is shown at startup will show media from tracker, optical
media and bookmarks ( set via add local video dialog). In my
quick hack to make this use grl-filesystem, it will show media from the
filesystem-paths key above, but this is not recursive.
Bookmarks don't currently get thumbnails, but there are git patches to fix that.

[Bug 1393067] [NEW] totem 3.14

2014-11-15 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

Totem as of 3.12 has an entirely new UI based heavily on GNOME3 HIG. We
would like to ship this for Ubuntu GNOME, however I suspect that Ubuntu

changes. If that is the case, then we might need to fork the packaging
and upload a new source package totem3 or something.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

[Bug 1389336] Re: Use geoclue-2.0

Seb, That is correct its no longer possible to provide custom providers,
so it would either require teaching the ubuntu GeoIP server the
Geolocate API or merging ubuntu-geoip directly into geoclue as a
location source.

There was a one point a geoip client in geoclue-2.0 but it got dropped when
GNOME switched to using Mozilla Location Service. It should be possible to do
something similar for ubuntu-geoip support

[Bug 1390224] [NEW] Enable gnome-shell search provider

2014-11-06 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

gnome-terminal needs a build-dep on gnome-shell to build the search
provider but this is only to get a copy of the search provider dbus
interface xml file. So instead we can provide a local copy of this file
and avoid the build-dep on shell.

Looks like you have some ppa packages installed. Upgrades with ppa's
installed are not supported, nor recommended. You should ppa-purge them
before upgrading.

gnome-session-properties is not deprecated (although it will come back
in proper ubuntu packages for Vivid).

similar functionality is provided by gnome-tweak-tool now.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

[Bug 1381297] [NEW] gnome-classic sessions broken with upstart user sessions

2014-10-14 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

As of GNOME 3.12 gnome-classic session is selected by setting a
GNOME_SHELL_SESSION_MODE environment variable. upstream this is set in
the gnome-session desktop file, however when using upstart user sessions
this file gets bypassed and hence the gnome-classic session just loads a
standard gnome-shell session.

We need to make sure this variable is set in the upstart user session as
well

[Bug 1339352] Re: [FFe] Update to 3.12

2014-10-01 Thread Tim
** Description changed:

Upstream is 3.12.4, Debian is 3.12.4-1, Ubuntu is 3.8.6-0ubuntu12
+
+ empathy 3.12 brings in many bug fixes over 3.8.6 that is currently in
+ utopic, this update was somehow overlooked earlier however it does not
+ use GtkHeaderBars and CSD's so from a UI perspective would be fine for
+ ubuntu-desktop.
+
+ We have had this release on the gnome3 ppa's for the best part of a
+ cycle and there are no major issues with it. In the last few days a few
+ of the -desktop team have played around with it also and not found any
+ critical issues.

[Bug 1372346] Re: [FFe] gnome-desktop 3.12 transition

2014-09-30 Thread Tim
** Description changed:

We have been trying to land this transition for about 9 months now (well
previously was 3.10, but that was largely the same). The big blocker was
the removal of xrandr and idlemonitor code out of gnome-desktop. Robert
Ancell has solved that issue see Bug 1372240

There is a SONAME bump, however that only affects g-s-d/g-c-c. Mostly
apps are using things like the thumbnailer etc, and these are not
affected by api changes, so they just need to be rebuilt.

gnome-session could be updated to the latest 3.10 stable release,
however this is not strictly required and will require reverting removal
of fallback dialogs. A rebuild would be fine for now.

I have debian merges ready to go for gnome-desktop, g-s-d and g-c-c 3.12
(but using 3.10 power plugin/panel to untangle from upower 0.99).

gnome-control-center update will also require a UIFe, Ubuntu GNOME
slideshow has not yet been updated for utopic, so this shouldnt be a
problem from our side. No other flavours use the UI part of gnome-
control-center anymore, the shared-data (faces) are unchanged.

[Bug 1372346] Re: [FFe] gnome-desktop 3.12 transition

2014-09-30 Thread Tim
Laney, I have pushed new branches that fix the depwait.

As far as edubuntu goes, they are using gnome-flashback which switched
to using u-s-d/u-c-c. I don't think g-s-d/g-c-c should even be seeded on
edubuntu. If I am reading the germinate output correctly its being
pulled in by gnome-media, which happens to be missing the usual unity-
control-center | gnome-control-center in the recommends.

[Bug 1376069] Re: Recommend unity-control-center | gnome-control-center

2014-09-30 Thread Tim
except that it is more or less obsolete so will only be used with
GNOME2-ish sessions which should all be using unity-control-center

[Bug 1373225] Re: Unity Control Center icons in the dash don't point to the right section in the Control Center

2014-09-29 Thread Tim
gnome-control-center 3.12 (which should land this week in utopic, Bug
1372346), sets NoDisplay=True in all the panel desktop files, so this
patch should not be required.

I am going to drop gcc_not_in_unity.patch, It only occurred to me when I
saw this bug!

[Bug 1372346] Re: [FFe] gnome-desktop 3.12 transition

2014-09-26 Thread Tim
Lets just stick with rebuild gnome-session for now, reverting the dialog
removal is a bit tangled up with other changes, will deal with that a
bit later.

** Branch unlinked: lp:~darkxst/gnome-session/lp1372346

** Description changed:

We have been trying to land this transition for about 9 months now (well
previously was 3.10, but that was largely the same). The big blocker was
the removal of xrandr and idlemonitor code out of gnome-desktop. Robert
- Ancell has solved that issue see Bug 1372240 (however that still hasn't
- landed yet.
+ Ancell has solved that issue see Bug 1372240

- There is a SONAME bump, however that only affects g-s-d/g-c-c (and
- u-s-d/u-c-c until above changes land). Mostly apps are using things like
- the thumbnailer etc, and these are not affected by api changes, so they
- just need to be rebuilt. gnome-session will need to be updated to latest
- 3.10 stable release.

+
+ gnome-session could be updated to the latest 3.10 stable release,
+ however this is not strictly required and will require reverting removal
+ of fallback dialogs.
