RE: //build conference

2015-04-27 Thread Ryan J. Salva
For those who plan to attend Build, we have several Cordova-related talks you
may want to attend:

Wed 5:00pm – 6:00pm
Strategies for Developing Cross-Platform Applications with Visual Studio 2015

Thurs 6:30pm – 7:30pm
Getting Started with Cross-Platform Mobile Development with Apache Cordova

Fri 12:30pm – 1:30pm
Getting Great Performance Out of Cordova Apps

Cordova will also make an appearance at several sessions from other teams,
including some from the Office team who will be talking about using Office 365
APIs in mobile apps.

Finally, on Thursday between 12:30 – 2:00pm, the Cordova product team is
organizing a casual meetup in the main cafeteria during lunch. This is really
just an opportunity for everyone to get together, eat from a buffet, chat about
Cordova and get to know each other.

See you there.

Hi all,

Shaz and I will be attending the microsoft //build event this week, and I
thought I would shout out here to see who else is attending? It would be great
to meet face to face.
Also, we're hosting a meetup[1] in our office tomorrow night, if anyone didn't
get the word via other social channels. Come by if you can.

As with Michal, you'll be seeing less of me around. My new full-time project
will be on the Android port of Chrome.

Just want to make it clear that us moving to new teams has nothing to do with a
lack of faith in the project, but rather is due to needing a change of scenery
and exciting new projects becoming available here.

I'm super excited to see a new wave of committers joining the project! The
momentum has certainly picked up:
- Cordova-android 4.0.0 was huge
- Plugins to npm was huge
- Win10 and wkwebview will be massive launches as well!

Great time for Cordova! (or a bad one... you know... if you're measuring
against the goal of becoming obsolete :P)

RE: Support needed

2015-05-27 Thread Ryan J. Salva
Mohamed,

If you check the documentation available for the Camera plugin at
https://github.com/apache/cordova-plugin-camera#options, you'll find an option
for cameraDirection.

-
cameraDirection: Choose the camera to use (front- or back-facing). The default
is BACK. Defined in navigator.camera.Direction (Number)

Camera.Direction = {
BACK : 0, // Use the back-facing camera
FRONT : 1 // Use the front-facing camera
};
-

Hope this helps.

Hello Team,
I'm developing a crossplatform application using cordova
(Visual studio hyprid multi device application).
I need to open the camera inside of the application without launching the
camera application.

Requirements:
1- Back camera should be opened in a frame inside of the page
2- User can capture photos and videos.

I found navigator.getUserMedia that is opening the front camera. Is there any
way to open the rear camera instead?

Needed platforms:
Android
IPhones

Could you please help?

+1 to the proposal.

Is there a structure of a sample template ? Also, the code seems to copy
everything from npm or the gitURL, though in the proposal you say that dot file

RE: Cordova website redesign

2015-10-07 Thread Ryan J. Salva
I'm personally a big fan of Ben's proposal. The typography really stands out
and gives the brand a strong, updated and modern presence. I know there's a lot
of pride in the heritage of the logo, and for that reason I wouldn't dream of
losing our beloved robot. However, the typography is a different story.

Is it absolutely necessary? Well... that really depends on your perspective.
From talking with many of you and other developers at conferences and events
over the past year, I've heard a repeating theme that Cordova has a
public-perception problem. A typography update won't change that perception by
itself, but it will demonstrate that Cordova isn't staying still... that the
project is evolving, growing and improving.

RE: [DISCUSS] Curating Apps

2015-10-19 Thread Ryan J. Salva
The original goal for including the app showcase was to demonstrate that
developers can build rockstar-quality apps using Cordova. I agree that by
opening the invitation to anyone without a vetting process, we fall short of
the original goal. Indeed, we might end up with a throng of hobo-quality apps
using any technology under the sun :-)

At the same time, I don't want to sign up any of the Cordova committers to
navigate the prejudicial question of "what counts as good?" Thus, I like Jörg's
proposal that we raise the empirical bar for entry. App developers need to
prove not only that their app is a Cordova app, but they have to submit
something that helps other developers build a better app.

Here's a straw man proposal intended to provoke response:

Must appear in a public store
Must use Cordova
Minimum 4 start rating
Minimum 1,000 downloads
Submitter must write a 200+ word blog post answering
– Which platforms are supported (minimum two)
– Which plugins are used?
– Which frameworks are used, if any?
– Syncing, languages, support for disabled people, …
– Something about problems
– Development environment and tools used

Thoughts?

thx for agreeing, but I see things different:

– What means pretty good, who will decide this, how to measure?

– What mean's popular, count of downloads?

Cordova as project has to have a view from Cordova -> Apps and not from the
other side. People have to say, why Cordova is good, Cordova has not to say why
an app is good.

And, yes, there is a need to have a blog or someting else for helping people
and doing the small, but important, things.

The most important thing is, that a lot of people starting with Cordova don’t
know a lot about javascript, htlm and css and that is the reason why a lot of
questions on SO are unanswered.

Hello to all of you from Germany,
i never wrote an e-mail to this list before but i want to tell you something
 about the situation over here.

I started developing applications with Cordova two years ago. It wasn’t easy
to understand how Cordova works and how it has to be used. The docs didn’t
help me enough so that i had to spend many hours in watching video tutorials
on youtube and read many articles about the cordova workflow.

After i developed applications for over a year, i decided to found a german
community which helps users who feel like i felt a year ago. At the End of
2014 i wrote e-mails to apache, registered domains and invested many hours
in research and writing tutorials, blog articles and so on. Down to the
present day the main Tutorials (iOS Android) were viewed over 40.000
times. We have about 800 visits a day and are helping all people with their
questions inside the board. Stackoverflow is also a great way to help people
but not all german developers are able to ask a question in english
(although you might thought that they are).

My target ever was to help people who are sitting in front of their
computers and thinking „hey… why aren’t you working cordova“ or „why doesn’t
it work like expected“? In spring 2015 my colleague and i decided to make
all a bit more professional. We weren’t satisfied by the website because all
was a bit heavy to find (Tutorials etc.) and it was not state of the art.
Again: E-Mails to apache, registered a new domain and now we’re starting a
 big project under

Cordova website redesign

2015-09-23 Thread Ryan J. Salva
TLDR

-- Feedback requested for a proposed Cordova website redesign at
http://cordova.apache.org/use-the-force-luke

-- The redesign was influenced by interviews with 300+ mobile
developers. From these conversations, we identified six top level
goals:

1. Establish that Cordova is an active project relevant to developers
in 2016 (the future!)

2. Show the potential of hybrid apps by highlighting some rock star-quality apps

3. Demonstrate critical mass by sharing a diverse set of tools and
businesses that have “made a bet” on Cordova

4. Improve developer’s first experience with Cordova by adding quick
start instructions and explanatory text for key concepts (e.g.
plugins)

5. Increase community participation by raising the visibility of
public forums (e.g. Slack, StackOverflow, Twitter)

6. Maintain consistency with the current website (i.e. branding and
content parity)

 The long read

Grab a cup of coffee. This is a long one.

As some of you may know, several committers from the Seattle area
(including Nikhil, Parashuram and I) have just completed a long series
of interviews with mobile developers. In the past three months, I’ve
personally interviewed over 100 developers. The team has collectively
interviewed closer to 300. We learned a lot and hope to share a
summary (with infographics!) of our insights soon. In the meantime, I
want to share one of the more poignant quotes from one interview. When
asked, “How can we make your job easier?”, one Cordova developer
responded:

“Take the stigma away from hybrid development. I can prove that it’s
the right tool for the job, but I have to prove it over-and-over
again. I wish that I didn’t have to have the same conversation every
time I want to use Cordova with a new manager or client.” -- Murali,
Cordova Developer

There are lots of ways to solve this problem, but one of the easier
and more visible ways is through Cordova’s front-door. The Cordova
website has served us well for the last 5+ years, but I believe a
redesign could help us address some pain points in the community. To
put it simply, we have a public perception problem.

“It’s hard to argue for Cordova when there are few examples of it
being successfully used.” -- Gary, Ionic Developer

Developers and architects are looking for examples of good development
to prove that high-quality, fast apps are possible. So, we thought it
might be good to highlight some rock star-quality apps on the home
page. Anyone can submit a PR to add their app so long as it appears in
a public store and uses Cordova. If the list of apps gets too long
(and it will), then we’ll randomize display. The same is true for a
list of tools and platforms that build on top of Cordova.

“There are so many layers to cross-platform development, it’s hard to
know how they all fit together. It’s even harder to know if you’re
missing a critical piece.” -- Mike, Cordova Developer

By itself, the website redesign won’t address this problem. We need
some good architectural docs that not only illustrate how Cordova
works, but also how it integrates with the larger ecosystem (e.g.
Crosswalk). However, we’re also hoping that by adding a little more
“hand-holding” on the site, we can help developers achieve success
faster. For example, we provide simple instructions for “Getting
Started” on the home page. And, on the Plugins page, we provide a
quick explanation of plugins’ role in Cordova development.

“It’s not clear where I can go for support.” -- Geoff, Cordova Developer

Okay… none of us want to provide customer support for the whole
community, but I want to make it easy for people to find the
community. To that end, our goal was to integrate prominent pointers
to all the places where our community aggregates – e.g. Slack,
StackOverflow, JIRA and mailing list.

Change for the sake of change is… well, for people with more time on
their hands than me, but this seems like the right time for a change
to the Cordova website. There’s a compelling developer need and little
risk in making the change.

Barring any grievous concerns, I'd love to get the new site launched
ASAP. If we need to make small changes after launch, it will be easy
to iterate. If you see any bugs that need to be fixed, please file
them here:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CB/component/12320562/

I open the floor to discussion ;-)

RE: Cordova website redesign

2015-09-24 Thread Ryan J. Salva
Ben, Wow. I really dig the logo! The new typeface looks pretty sweet with both
the flat and illustrated robot. It preserves a strong sense of continuity with
the current logo, but... I dunno. Looks a little more modern. I'd totally be
down with integrating it into the website redesign. Are there any concerns
about licensing? Do others like it?

Frederico, we didn't take a close look at pages on the Apache site, but your
right that this page looks outdated. Fortunately, we can update it separately
from the Cordova website. https://projects.apache.org/project.html?cordova

Carlos, where specifically did you want us to add a link? Happy to add it once
we spot the right location.
http://cordova.apache.org/use-the-force-luke/docs/en/edge/plugin_ref/spec.html

Steven, we didn't want to add any apps to the showcase until we received
community feedback, but I totally agree... we need more! We've already added
NewVo, Pacifica and SworkIt. Are there any others you'd recommend? Help us pick
the biggest and brightest stars ;-)

Regarding "Sort by Quality" on the plugin page, it's based on the rating from
http://npmsearch.com/. According to their website, ratings are based on
multiple metrics including:

- number of stars
- number of dependents
- release frequency
- existence of tests/readme/etc..

I really like where this update is going, and what it signals to the

I'm curious what thoughts are around a Cordova logo update itself. I put

just plain-old Helvetica, which is totally fine, but can sometimes feel empty
of any personality or uniqueness. My suggestion is simply to update it to a
more contemporary, custom typeface (in this case, Brandon Text

Re: Cordova implementation of windows desktop

2015-12-04 Thread Ryan J. Salva
Ajay,

Generally speaking, the aim of Cordova is to enable JavaScript developers to
build cross-platform mobile applications. Since Windows is one of the few
platforms to run JavaScript natively, it made sense to use the preferred
language of the target audience. There are also performance benefits to using
JavaScript natively in the Windows context. Namely, plugin APIs can directly
access the WinRT APIs via JavaScript without having bridge the webview.

I'm a little confused by your statement that customers have wanted to use
"commercially available UI control product that is available only in C#." Of
course, it's totally natural to leverage commercially available products, but
even if the Cordova Windows platform was implemented with a webview in a C#
container, that wouldn't necessarily allow you to use C# controls since the
webview occupies 100% of the available screen. In other words, all UI within a
Cordova app is typically written in JavaScript. Can you clarify the use case?

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I am looking for some historical background on the decision on the
implementation stack for Windows (desktop) . Windows (desktop) is
implemented in WinJS . Was there any reason / implementation hurdle in
implementing it in C#/XAML (like Windows Phone 8).

I'm increasingly seeing customers getting to a situation where they have a
cordova app - and want to invoke a commercially available UI control
product that is available only in C#.

RE: [DISCUSS] Cordova Style Guide

2016-01-26 Thread Ryan J. Salva
Rob,

Any contributions you can provide would be most welcome... especially if you
can help us apply that style guide to existing docs. We're making a big push to
improve the documentation this year, but it's hard work and often gets
prioritized below things like bug fixes to the actual framework.

It all starts with a pull request :-)

Gerday, Dmitry,
I'm a bit of a documentation pedant.
I have been "monitoring" Cordova development for a few months now, with the
initial intent of wanting to contribute to improving the documentation (and
then, perhaps to contributing to the code base).
The thing that has struck me in this time is that there appears to be NO
documentation style standards. Yes, the documents you reference go some of the
way towards what I am looking for but they could be a lot better (eg, is it
"E.g.,", "eg,", "e.g.,", is it "Cordova" or "cordova", is it "database" or
"data base", do you put a comma before the "and" in the last of a list of comma
separated items (eg, is it "a, b, c, and d" or is it "a, b, c and d"), do we
employ USA-English or UK-English (or both), etc).
Further, it appears that some contributors "pick up" others with their code
style standard breaches (I have seen "please insert a space here", "please lint
this", etc), but I rarely see anyone picking up documentation style standards
beaches.
Without letting my ego get in the way, I'm happy to contribute a suggested list
of style standards (that I use when developing Android and Windows apps using
Cordova) as well as acting in a Quality Assurance role with the documentation.
As you probably know, the Cordova documentation is quite regularly critcised
all over the web. Rather than be just another one of these criicisers, I'm
happy "to put my time where my mouth is" and contribute. I (and others)
believe we can do a lot better here. What do you think?

Rob

RE: [DISCUSS] Cordova Style Guide

2016-01-26 Thread Ryan J. Salva
Rob,

Your proposal makes total sense and I'd, personally, be happy for you to start
with a revitalized style guide.

To encourage frequent updates to the docs, our process to-date has been
intentionally light-weight. I think one concern among the community will be: if
there's overhead for documentation changes, will it discourage contributors
from making updates?

Really, I think what we need is someone to take the reins as a copy editor. We
are primarily a community of very pragmatic coders. The subtleties of prose all
too often escape our best intents. Having said that, we have identified
documentation quality as a major cause of dissatisfaction and prioritized it in
the roadmap. Perhaps with a style guide and passionate contributor in-place, we
can collectively improve the process and public-facing documents.

Gerday again,
Thanks for the quick replies.
I was already aware of the 3 links above (as I said, "I've been watching for a
while").
I must not have been clear in in my email... So I'll be a little more precise,
BEFORE any effort is expended on revamping the documentation, we need to agree
what the documentation style standards are to be. In my humble opinion, the
current documentation style standards are insufficient and need a revamp. If
we don't do this, we will end up with a mashup of different looking documents
that look like they have been cobbled together over time by a lot of
well-meaning amateurs.
The new (agreed IA) is terrific. The next step is to agree the standards and
the process for maintaining (reviewing, promulgating, inculcating, making all
committers aware of, updating existing documents to, revising, etc).
My guess is this means raising a JIRA for this activity.
OK?

Rob

PS I'm in Australia (Sydney) so there may be a time lag between your requests

Check out the default template we use in TACO-CLI.

Index.js is a lot simpler and we adopted the new Cordova typeface. If folks

I do agree that our starter app needs to change. However, we encountered this
when we were looking at documenting, and our object of concern was the way
events are bound. My suggestion would be to simply fix the event binding so
that the docs are less confusing.

We could then look at re-writing the starter-app itself.

Personally, I think we should rewrite/simplify that template ALOT.
The app binding stuff is confusing to users, but not potentially any less
confusing with PR#15. The use of an object is the issue in my mind.

Also, if this is the starting point for a new developer, they will soon wonder
why everything they add to the page is UPPERCASE, part of the css, but
potentially confusing.

Ultimately, I think the whole starting point is over-organized with it's
multiple folders. PR#5 is closer to the goal I think, although I would still
leave js in an external file, and not directly in index.html and I would leave
quotes on html tag attributes.

I'd rather be on that list instead of not be on any list. I'd be more
concerned with the fact that we're on the "Losers" section of the trending tech
with a 7% decrease in the number of questions, which indicate that people
either have no problems (not very likely) or are just giving up. I haven't
been answering questions on Stack for a while, mostly because they're using
some third party framework like ionic or something else.

I also find it interesting that people are hating on Cordova, and not PhoneGap,
Ionic, Taco or the other distributions.

RE: Does Cordova have a problem making developers happy?

2016-03-20 Thread Ryan J. Salva
As I told some of my co-workers today:

If you read the fine print, the actual statistic is “% of developers who are
developing with the language or tech but have not expressed interest in
continuing to do so.” Clearly, it’s not a good list to be on, but developer
behavior also doesn’t reflect their stated intent. NPM Stats show the number of
Cordova downloads has actually doubled since the same time last year.

Again, I don’t think this is a good list to appear on… I’m just not sure what
to make of it given developer behavior.

It's interesting that CoffeeScript is on this list and that it passed Cordova
in most dreaded. I also wonder what would happen if we went on the WordPress
mailing list and talked about how people were so unhappy with WordPress.

Frankly, the Microsoft committers team would not be able to attend in the same
numbers compared to last year due to budget constraints. Nevertheless, I'm sure
we could send 1-2 people.

Also, I would recommend an autumn date, where (presumably) everybody will be
available. Preferably at one of our contributor sites that hasn't hosted before?

We've had Google (Waterloo, ON) and Microsoft (Redmond, WA) previously.

Regrettably, Microsoft won't be attending ApacheCon this year either. Without
critical mass from the other Cordova contributors, it simply doesn't make sense
(as much as I'd love to visit Vancouver).

Does anyone have a recommended destination, host or occasion for the F2F?

A Cordova Face 2 Face might be useful and there might be a better chance to get
approval than Apache Con, also we stop doing the Monthly Hangouts I think they
we're useful and community builder.

and this bug as direct affection our app.

Since I tested and believe that it might help the community, I want to be able
to do a pull request. After that, I want to continue contributing. I always
liked the open source community philosophy.

I could not subscribe to MarkMail yet since it is offline, I will do it soon.

Thanks for your attention.
