Re: Inactive packagers for the F41 cycle
Hi Mattia, Thanks for this. I had a small query about the removal of folks from groups---are they not also removed from other packager groups? For example, I noticed we had folks in the neuro-sig packager group that had been removed from the packager group due to inactivity. I went ahead and removed them manually now, but that brought up a query about src.fp.o: If people are still in the neuro-sig packager group, even if they're not in the packager group, do they still have access to the neuro-sig packages? Also, of course, FAS only syncs with src.fp.o when people login, so even though I removed these folks from the FAS group, they're still listed on the src.fp.o group (but this isn't an issue since I expect they'll be removed from here when they login and things sync): https://src.fedoraproject.org/group/neuro-sig vs https://accounts.fedoraproject.org/group/neuro-sig/ On Tue, Aug 20, 2024 17:43:38 GMT, Mattia Verga via devel wrote: > In accordance with FESCo's Inactive Packager Policy[1], packagers that have > been identified > as inactive have a ticket in the find-inactive-packagers repo[2]. nifticlib soname bump coming to rawhide on Friday (16 Aug)
Hi folks, I'm updating nifticlib to v3. This includes a soname bump in one of the shared libraries: libznz.so.2 -> libznz.so.3. Only `vips` and `xmedcon` depend on this particular shared library. vips builds fine with the new version, and xmedcon is FTBFS for other reasons. Just trying to wrap my head around this :) - task2 obsoletes task <= 2.whatever, in F38--40. So, when users update, they get task2. Cool, that sounds good. - task >= 3 then lands in rawhide (F41), and users will have to install it explicitly. That does solve the issue of taskv2 being upgraded to taskv3 without the users' knowledge. Users still have to manually export/import, but I don't see a way around that at all. Additionally, for those on stable releases that do want to update to taskv3, I can maybe provide a COPR for F<41. I think I'll still announce it as a self contained change for more visibility. Can't task2 be built in such a way > that it can be installed alongside task (task v3). They both provide the same binary, but we could perhaps rename the task binary from taskv2 to task2. I've not looked at the rest of the package files yet to be able to say if they'll all require similar mangling to allow taskv2 and taskv3 to be installed in parallel. Theoretically, it should be doable. The issue with updating task to v3 and keeping task2 is that people that aren't aware of the change will end up with a non-functional task installation when the task package is upgraded. They'll have to downgrade to an older version of the package (or install task2), export their data, and then re-upgrade task to make it all work (and sync with taskserver won't work even then, of course). The documentation says "Before installing Taskwarrior 3, export all of your tasks". I haven't tested out what happens if one runs task3 without exporting the data---it shouldn't touch the old data files, but I don't know if it affects the import later. -- Thanks, Regards, Ankur Sinha "FranciscoD" (He / Him / His) | https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ankursinha Time zone: Europe/London signature.asc Description: PGP signature -- ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

Updating Taskwarrior to v3
Hi folks, Taskwarrior has recently released version 3.x. While the command line remains the same, this version includes backwards incompatible changes: https://github.com/GothenburgBitFactory/taskwarrior/releases/tag/v3.0.0 https://taskwarrior.org/docs/upgrade-3/ - the user task database format has changed and requires users to manually migrate - it no longer supports taskserver for syncing The upgrade steps say that one must migrate their data base *before* installing task v3. So, this is clearly a backwards incompatible change that requires users intervention. What would be the best way of handling this? I didn't want to just update the package in Fedora. Instead I was thinking of packaging taskwarrior v3 as a new package, task3, that will obsolete the current package but not update it. -- Thanks, Regards, Ankur Sinha "FranciscoD" (He / Him / His) | https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ankursinha Time zone: Europe/London signature.asc Description: PGP signature -- ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

Again, it really depends on your packages. You maintain lots of core libraries where API/ABI bumps etc. do not/should not be pushed to stable releases. For the neuro-sig, we do have quite a few python packages that have frequent minor/patch releases and we do push these as updates to stable branches also after doing impact checks. Sure, if folks find it useful enough. In the meantime, I added bits to run `fedrq` before each branch is worked upon to inform the user what packages would be affected: https://github.com/sanjayankur31/100_dotfiles/blob/main/bin/fedpkg-sync-build-all-branches.sh#L30 -- Thanks, Regards, Ankur Sinha "FranciscoD" (He / Him / His) | https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ankursinha Time zone: Europe/London signature.asc Description: PGP signature ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

We have tools that package maintainers can/should use to see what packages depend on a particular one before updating it (fedrq is one I believe, but folks have their own dnf based scripts/commands). I've also filed an RFE to the-new-hotness to add dependency information to the "new package version is available" bug report some time ago, which would help ensure maintainers are aware of the update's impact: https://github.com/fedora-infra/the-new-hotness/issues/545 We're discussing a different topic now. The starting point for package maintainers is here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/package-maintainers/Joining_the_Package_Maintainers/ Language stacks can be complex to build and package, and can also be quite a bit of work to maintain. So, if you don't have any packaging experience, I'd perhaps work on a few other packages to gain a good understanding of the packaging pipeline before taking this on. -- Thanks, Regards, Ankur Sinha "FranciscoD" (He / Him / His) | https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ankursinha Time zone: Europe/London signature.asc Description: PGP signature ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue
Anyone interested in packaging nim-lang?
Hi folks, One of my packages, taskopen[1], has moved to nim in the latest release. I'd like to update it, but I've never used nim (and don't intend to) and so, don't want to maintain a nim-lang stack all by myself. Any folks in the community interested in packaging and maintaining nim? I'll very happy to help, but I'd rather not be the primary maintainer. https://nim-lang.org/ https://github.com/nim-lang/Nim/ package manager: https://github.com/nim-lang/nimble [1] https://github.com/jschlatow/taskopen/blob/v2.0.1/Makefile#L31 -- Thanks, Regards, Ankur Sinha "FranciscoD" (He / Him / His) | https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ankursinha Time zone: Europe/London signature.asc Description: PGP signature ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue
