[ovirt-devel] Reminder: CentOS Stream 8 is now EOL
Hi, just a reminder that CentOS Stream 8 reached its end of life at the end of last month on Friday, May 31, 2024. As it has been announced by CentOS project[1], all the CentOS Stream 8 repositories are going to be archived at vault.centos.org . Who didn't update yet to CentOS Stream 9 will probably hit several errors related to this archiving: you'll need to manually adjust the repository url to point to the new location at vault.centos.org. The archiving is going to happen today [2] with the decommissioning of the nodes used by the CentOS Community Build System used for oVirt builds for Stream 8 within the CentOS Virtualization SIG. At this point, the recommendation is to upgrade to CentOS Stream 9 (or derived) as soon as practical. For those who are pushing changes to the oVirt project, please note GitHub actions may start to fail on CentOS Stream 8 (and with that, the builds for oVirt Node and oVirt Appliance). It's up to you to decide if you want to change the config there to use a different el8 distribution for running the tests or just turn off el8 and rely only on CentOS Stream 9 tests. [ovirt-devel] oVirt 4.6 planning
oVirt developers community, I see there are a few enhancements submitted in GitHub: engine: Add amt_ws fence agent support <https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/pull/810> Notification emails merging and localization <https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/pull/798> And also some rebase proposal: Rebase on WildFly 26 <https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/issues/637> Which would probably make more sense to be targeted to an oVirt 4.6 than a 4.5.z. There are now about three hundreds Untargeted issues(no milestone set) <https://github.com/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+user%3Aovirt+archived%3Afalse+no%3Amilestone> to be triaged and about sixty Untargeted PRs (no milestone set) <https://github.com/pulls?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Apr+user%3Aovirt+archived%3Afalse+no%3Amilestone> to be reviewed. Some of them might be ready for a 4.5.z bugfix release while others can wait for a 4.6. Anyone willing to step in to lead the oVirt 4.6 development? A year has passed since my blog post about the future of the oVirt project <https://blogs.ovirt.org/2022/02/future-of-ovirt-february-2022/> but the concept is the same: oVirt future depends on how you, the community! [ovirt-devel] Re: oVirt migration to stable OS?
I would have discussed this in user mailing list rather than in development mailing list. Anyway, you're welcome to run oVirt on RHEL, Alma, Rocky, Oracle, it should work perfectly fine on RHEL 8.6 and derivatives. Prerequisite for using them: https://ovirt.org/download/install_on_rhel.html We are using CentOS Stream as a development platform as it will give us insight on what will come next. But for a production environment it's totally fine not using CentOS Stream. [ovirt-devel] oVirt survey questions gathering
Hi, as every year I'd like to have a survey gathering feedback from the oVirt community. I would like to get input from the community itself on what you'd like to know from the other members of the community. As oVirt developer: which question may help you take decisions on new features or deprecate existing ones you consider unused? As oVirt sysadmin user: which question may help you take decisions on your datacenters planning? As a third party software vendor (backup, monitoring, ...): which questions may help you drive your further developments integrating with oVirt? As a downstream vendor, integrator, consultant offering services around oVirt: which questions may help you drive your investment on contributing to oVirt project? As a university, research center, high school, code club, which questions may help you drive your decision to be involved with the future of oVirt project? Any other questions you think may be relevant and worth asking the oVirt community? Collecting questions suggested in this thread here: https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-site/wiki/oVirt-2022-Survey-questions Thanks, -- Sandro Bonazzola MANAGER, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, EMEA R&D RHV Red Hat EMEA <https://www.redhat.com/> sbona...@redhat.com <https://www.redhat.com/> *Red Hat respects your work life balance. [ovirt-devel] 4.5.0 beta compose delayed to April 4th 2022
oVirt 4.5.0 beta compose has been delayed to next week on April 4th as ovirt-engine and gluster-ansible-role support for ansible-core 2.12 missed today's deadline. Test day has been rescheduled accordingly to April 5th. Testers: please continue testing the released Alpha and providing feedback https://trello.com/b/3FZ7gdhM/ovirt-450-test-day A few packages that were meant to be shipped today as part of the beta release have been already pushed to testing repositories so you can already provide some feedback on the beta sanity. Known issues: - hyperconverged deployment doesn't work due to missing updated gluster-ansible-roles packages - ovirt-engine is still using ansible 2.9.27 and wasn't updated from 4.5.0 Alpha - ovirt-appliance and oVirt Node have not been built with current content of the testing repos as beta has been rescheduled Be aware the RHEL 8.6 Beta has been released yesterday so you can already try running on top of it. Rocky Linux announced they're already building 8.6 beta as well so it may be possible to start testing on top of it soon as well. There's no plan to completely remove support for Gluster as a storage backend. > > > - Gilboa > > > On Tue, Feb 22, 2022 at 4:57 PM Sandro Bonazzola wrote: >> >> The oVirt development team leads are pleased to inform that the >> schedule for oVirt 4.5.0 has been finalized. >> >> The key dates follows: >> >> * Feature Freeze - String Freeze - Alpha release: 2022-03-15 >> * Alpha release test day: 2022-03-17 >> * Code freeze - Beta release: 2022-03-29 >> * Beta release test day: 2022-03-31 >> * General Availability release: 2022-04-12 >> >> A release management draft page has been created at: >> https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.5.0/ >> >> If you're willing to help testing the release during the test days >> please join the oVirt development mailing list at >> https://lists.ovirt.org/archives/list/devel@ovirt.org/ and report your >> feedback there. >> Instructions for installing oVirt 4.5.0 Alpha and oVirt 4.5.0 Beta for >> testing will be added to the release page >> https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.5.0/ when the corresponding version >> will be released. >> >> Professional Services, Integrators and Backup vendors: please plan a >> test session against your additional services, integrated solutions, >> downstream rebuilds, backup solution accordingly. >> If you're not listed here: >> https://ovirt.org/community/user-stories/users-and-providers.html >> consider adding your company there. >> >> If you're willing to help updating the localization for oVirt 4.5.0 >> please follow https://ovirt.org/develop/localization.html >> >> If you're willing to help promoting the oVirt 4.5.0 release you can >> submit your banner proposals for the oVirt home page and for the >> social media advertising at https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-site/issues >> As an alternative please consider submitting a case study as in >> https://ovirt.org/community/user-stories/user-stories.html >> >> Feature owners: please start planning a presentation of your feature >> for oVirt Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/ovirtproject >> >> Do you want to contribute to getting ready for this release? >> Read more about oVirt community at https://ovirt.org/community/ and >> join the oVirt developers https://ovirt.org/develop/ >> >> Thanks, >> -- >> >> Sandro Bonazzola >> MANAGER, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, EMEA R&D RHV >> Red Hat EMEA >> sbona...@redhat.com >> Red Hat respects your work life balance. [ovirt-devel] oVirt 4.4.10 Async update #2
On January 26th 2022 the oVirt project released an async update to the following packages: - ovirt-engine 4.4.10.6 Fixing the following bugs: - [BZ 2044277 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2044277>] - Replace ovirt-engine-extension-logger-log4j with internal ovirt-engine implementation Package ovirt-engine-extension-logger-log4j has been obsoleted and replaced by internal ovirt-engine implementation in oVirt Engine 4.4.10.6. During upgrade from previous oVirt versions to oVirt 4.4.10 ovirt-engine-extension-logger-log4j package is uninstalled if it was previously installed. If you used ovirt-engine-extension-logger-log4j in previous oVirt versions, you will need to manually remove existing ovirt-engine-extension-logger-log4j configuration files and configure the new feature of sending log records to remote syslog service according to the Administration Guide. Also after successful upgrade to oVirt 4.4.10 you can manually uninstall log4j12 package without breaking oVirt setup: $ dnf remove log4j12 - [BZ 2044257 <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2044257>] - Bump snmp4j library version to remove dependency on log4j oVirt Engine 4.4.10.6 is requiring snmp4j >= 3.6.4, which no longer depends on log4j library -- Sandro Bonazzola MANAGER, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, EMEA R&D RHV Red Hat EMEA <https://www.redhat.com/> sbona...@redhat.com <https://www.redhat.com/> *Red Hat respects your work life balance. FYI -- Forwarded message - Da: Miroslav Rezanina Date: lun 24 gen 2022 alle ore 12:25 Subject: [CentOS-virt] qemu-kvm-core features moved to separate packages in CentOS 9 Stream To: Hi all, There's currently MR [1] on review with changes making the packing layout more close to fedora. This change unfortunately causes users using qemu-kvm-core package (not qemu-kvm) to lose some functionality as some submodules will be moved to separate packages so anyone using these features has to install such package in addition to qemu-kvm-core package. This change won't affect qemu-kvm usage as this package will keep these packages as dependency. These changes are going to be submitted soon so anyone using CentOS 9 Streams qemu-kvm-core package should check whether the functionality is still provided by core package after the change or additional subpackage is needed. [ovirt-devel] Updates on oVirt Node and oVirt appliance building outside Jenkins
Hi, just a quick update on current issues in trying to build oVirt Node and the engine appliance outside Jenkins. 1) Using GitHub Actions: an attempt to build it is in progress here: https://github.com/sandrobonazzola/ovirt-appliance/pull/1 it's currently failing due to lorax not being able to perform the build. It kind of make sense as we are trying to do a virt-install within a container without the needed virtualization hardware exposed. I'm currently investigating how to make use of software virtualization in order to drop the requirement on missing hardware / nested virtualization. Also investigating on how to use self hosted runners for providing a build system with usable virtualization hardware. 2) Using COPR: we have basically the same issue: lorax fails not having access to the virtualization hardware 3) Using CentOS Community Build System This is a fully fledged Koji instance and it allows to build using the image-build variant. It has a completely different configuration system and it is more similar to what we are doing within the downstream build of oVirt Node. An attempt of providing the configuration started here: https://gerrit.ovirt.org/c/ovirt-appliance/+/117801 The issue there is that all the packages needed to be included within Node and Appliance must be built within CentOS Community Build System build root. The system has no external access to the internet so everything we need it needs to come from CentOS infra. I haven't started digging into oVirt Node but the build flow is very similar to the appliance one, so once one is solved, the other should be simple. -- Sandro Bonazzola MANAGER, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, EMEA R&D RHV Red Hat EMEA <https://www.redhat.com/> sbona...@redhat.com <https://www.redhat.com/> *Red Hat respects your work life balance. [ovirt-devel] ovirt-engine dependency on ovirt-engine-extensions-api
Hi, In ovirt-engine pom.xml there's a requirement for build time on ovirt-engine-extensions-api = 1.0.0. This dependency is available on maven central so online build works. Any clue on why we are not requiring 1.0.1 <https://search.maven.org/artifact/org.ovirt.engine.api/ovirt-engine-extensions-api/1.0.1/jar> instead ? We are packaging ovirt-engine-extensions-api during the development but it ships 1.0.2.SNAPSHOT so when building in offline mode (needed for building on CentOS Virt SIG) it fails as the 1.0.0 artifact was never downloaded. I can rebuild ovirt-engine-extensions-api from 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 which are available in maven central too as requiring explicitly 1.0.2.SNAPSHOT fails with: Failed to execute goal on project common-dependencies: Could not resolve dependencies for project org.ovirt.engine.core.manager:common-dependencies:jar:4.5.0-SNAPSHOT: The following artifacts could not be resolved: org.ovirt.engine.api:ovirt-engine-extensions-api:jar:1.0.2.SNAPSHOT, org.ovirt.java-client-kubevirt:java-client-kubevirt:jar:0.5.0, org.apache.sshd:sshd-common:jar:2.6.0, org.apache.sshd:sshd-core:jar:2.6.0, net.i2p.crypto:eddsa:jar:0.3.0, org.ovirt.engine.api:metamodel-server:jar:1.3.7, org.ovirt.vdsm-jsonrpc-java:vdsm-jsonrpc-java-client:jar:1.6.0, com.fasterxml.jackson.core:jackson-databind:jar:2.12.1, org.jboss.resteasy:resteasy-jaxrs:jar:3.9.3.Final, com.fasterxml.jackson.jaxrs:jackson-jaxrs-json-provider:jar:2.12.1, org.apache.httpcomponents:httpclient:jar:4.5.13: Could not find artifact org.ovirt.engine.api:ovirt-engine-extensions-api:jar:1.0.2.SNAPSHOT -> [Help 1] Any recommendations on how to proceed? -- Sandro Bonazzola MANAGER, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, EMEA R&D RHV Red Hat EMEA <https://www.redhat.com/> sbona...@redhat.com <https://www.redhat.com/> *Red Hat respects your work life balance. [ovirt-devel] Bugs easy to fix but left behind for more important ones
Hi, there's a bunch of bugs which are easy to fix and can possibly be fixed also by someone with little / no programming experience. They are low priority, low severity, and likely going to be closed deferred / wontfix due to capacity by the end of the 4.5.0 development cycle. But if you have time and you want to try to contribute to oVirt for the first time, these are likely to be easy enough to let you contribute. *Bug 1581672* <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1581672> - [TEXT] add help for --otopi-environment to ovirt-engine-provisiondb tool *Bug 2000121* <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2000121> - docs/comments/etc misguide about postgresql credentials defaults *Bug 1999049* <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1999049> - hosted engine installation fails if locale is Greek If you give it a try and you have issues please let me know, I'll try to help unblock you. hi, java-client-kubevirt is failing on missing dependencies: package: java-client-kubevirt-0.5.0-1.20211108071009.gite0a0fe8.el9.src from copr:copr.fedorainfracloud.org:ovirt:ovirt-master-snapshot unresolved deps: maven-plugin-registry maven-profile maven-shade-plugin I'm providing those dependencies temporarily with ovirt-master-snapshot-static repo. [ovirt-devel] Re: ansible-runner in CentOS Virtualization SIG 4.5/el8s
Looking at dependencies: `$ repoquery --whatrequires ansible-runner` shows no results. `$ repoquery --whatrequires python3-ansible-runner` shows: ansible-runner-0:1.4.6-1.el8.noarch ansible-runner-service-0:1.0.7-1.el8.noarch ansible-runner-service-dev-0:1.0.7-1.el8.noarch python-networking-ansible-0:5.0.1-0.20211101132217.b82d349.el8.src python3-network-runner-0:0.2.2-2.el8.noarch python3-networking-ansible-0:5.0.1-0.20211101132217.b82d349.el8.noarch So it looks like it would be safe to drop the ansible-runner package within CentOS Virt SIG.
