[Dovecot] dovecot sendmail mysql no inbox error

2007-04-26 Thread jan gestre

hi guys,

we are experiencing this particular problem with one of the webmail server
we manage. the server is using dovecot as pop3 and imap server while
sendmail is being used as mta. when this user tries to login via telnet,
this is what i've got:

$ telnet localhost pop3

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK dovecot ready.
user user1
+OK
pass password
+OK Logged in.
-ERR No INBOX for user.
Connection closed by foreign host.

when i looked at the maillog i saw this:

Apr 25 20:52:32 samplemail pop3(samplemail): File isn't in mbox format:
/var/mail/samplemail
Apr 25 20:52:32 samplemail pop3(samplemail): File isn't in mbox format:
/var/mail/samplemail
Apr 25 20:52:32 samplemail pop3(samplemail): Couldn't open INBOX: Internal
error occured. Refer to server log for more information. [2007-04-25
20:52:32]

tried google but not much of help, they just suggested to update or replace
dovecot. i already update dovecot and made some changes to default_mail_env
parameter, still the same result.

dovecot version is 0.99 on a fedora 4 box

any idea?

If Exim takes care of all the hard errors (like nonexisting
user...) you can

almost set temp_errors = *.

Hmmm... I'm continuing to peer at the source code of Dovecot's
deliver and related libraries and have a feeling it's not going to be
as straight forward as the above.

It looks as though deliver calls routines in lib-storage to try and
write out the message. If these detect a problem they flag the
error, and the routine they use to do so indicates it is not a
temporary one. Deliver sees the write failed and, seeing that
temporary_error is FALSE itself generates and sends the error response.

I'm currently trying to work out how this behaviour can be changed
without affecting other things.

For example it probably isn't safe to change the function used by the
storage routines to flag that any and every error logged through it
is a temporary_error: there may well be other places it gets called
where the error is NOT temporary.

Likewise I'm not sure if I can simply change the source of deliver to
always return a temporary failure code because again there may be
other problems that occur which should be permanently failed.

I think I need help from Timo on this one, unless someone has already
worked this one out previously?

Cheers,
Mike B-)

[Dovecot] Hot to get rid of \DON\'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE\ messages?

2007-04-26 Thread foxx

I'm using Dovecot 1.0.0 (mbox) with Postfix 2.4 on my FreeBSD box, as a
pop3-only server (imap is disabled). All account mailboxes are accessed using
Outlook clients.

I've noticed that, whenever I'm retrieving mail with pop3, a DON'T DELETE THIS
MESSAGE is created in mbox. Although these messages are never sent to client
MUAs, I found them very annoying.

BTW I don't use (or used before) UW or Pine or any other c-client, therefore I
assume it's a Dovecot issue. Previously I was using Cyrus and never had such a
problem.

Any idea how this can be fixed?

Less broken than Thunderbird?

Thunderbirds IMAP support - at least on windows - seems to me to be very
good...

eh, sorry, gnus (on emacs) is probably the best. but it's too difficult
for most users.

You're arguing with yourself? ;)

I tried Mulberry after hearing about it here - and was very unimpressed.
The interface was very clunky, and it just didn't click.

Long live Thunderbird!

[Dovecot] Troubleshooting - another suggestion...

2007-04-26 Thread Charles Marcus

Hi Timo,

I'm the one who suggested the '-n' option to capture the actual config
settings that the running dovecot process was using (ala postfix), and
you implemented it very quickly - so thanks for that!

Now, I'd like to suggest an enhancement...

Many people still do not provide basic things like dovecot version, and
there are secondary config files like dovecot-ldap, whose settings are
not included in the dovecot -n output.

How difficult would it be to add these to the output so that the output
would include the running dovecot version, as well as any extra config
settings from any other files that are loaded when dovecot starts?

It would sure make it easier, both for us troubleshooting on our own,
and when asking for help on the list.

Many thanks, and terrific job on 1.0!

Now all dovecot lacks is full support for IMAP ACLs/shared folders, and
support for single-instance storage, and it will have no real competition...

I agree Apple's mail client is full of crazy bugs, but it has been
working just fine for me since I upgraded to Dovecot 1.0.0. I've tried a
variety of other IMAP clients on my mac from time to time, but I keep
coming back to Apple mail. The second place is probably Opera's mail
client, but I don't like the fact it won't use an IMAP trash folder,
other than that, it is really quite good.

You said you tried to update - to what version? If 1.0.0 (the NEW,
actual 1.0 release just released this month), did you read the update
instructions? There were some major config file changes, so it is not an
update that you can perform blindly.

i updated via yum update dovecot command, i think it is still version 0.99
.

0.99 is no longer supported. I recommend seeing if you can find an RPM
for 1.0.0 for Fedora4 (someone on this list can probably point you to
one) or build one of your own (sorry, can't help you there)) but you'll
also need to be aware of the changes, so be sure to read the upgrade
instructions/release notes:

I'm using Apple Mail to Dovecot and have no real issues with IMAP to
Dovecot. Certainly not as many as others. I'm also doing IMAP to
Exchange and to Communigate Pro, and Exchange sucks royally, but
Dovecot and CGP work fine.

At work, we do IMAP proxying for crypto, and let me tell you we know
lots about the idiocies in every client there is. Mail.app has had
some major revisions in some of the point releases of 10.4, so what
you thought six months ago isn't necessarily so now.

Every IMAP client we know of (and we've seen them all) does crazy
things. It's really an IMAP problem that there are several ways to do
anything. Thunderbird has its own idiosyncrasies, as does Mulberry
and anything else.

Re: [Dovecot] simple questions

2007-04-26 Thread Nagyon Almos

Thank you for your help.

I suspected that these question are really simple,
but I did not know what expressions to search for.

I don't use it, but look into:
http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-January/010968.html
and look for Pine's rsh command.
Also: http://wiki.dovecot.org/CommandLine
I guess this works similarly for mutt,
but what about thunderbird?

Maybe, search for --exec-mail in the mailing list. It had been asked
several times before.
Thanks for the tip. It works like a charm.

This is like Shared Folders, http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes
Look for Read-only Maildirs
I am coping with the details (namespaces, read only maildir visible
for only one user and so on), but the wiki is very helpful.

And I dont want to seem to be pushy, but what about
the windows version? Is it absolutely of out question?

Thanks Regards,
A.
