[DX-CHAT] one more no buro manager
Hello , I have no access to a buro so you will need to send direct.. as postage costs are getting worse you will require 2 ircs or $4usd or $4euro for postage for the package. Address is below. That's what I have lately got in reply to my e-mail request for buro QSL. Since there is 2 USD step, as I see, who will be the first one requesting 6 dollars or 6 Euros for a confirmation? Is the postage in Australia THAT expensive? And does VK-buro work THAT bad? Conclusion: LoTW rules. -- 73...Art RX9TX 18-Jul-05 13:22 UTC Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Is the postage in Australia THAT expensive? And does VK-buro work THAT bad? Whoever sent you this should be reported to ARRL as being unsportsman- like. Looking at the Australian Post Office web site reveals that the tariff for international air mail (letter to 50 g) to most of the world is 1.80$ (AUD). Looking at www.oanda.com, the current conversion rate between the USD and AUD is 1.336 ... thus the cost is about $1.35 US to mail three or four cards from Australia to anyplace in the world (one IRC or two GS should be sufficient). As to the bureau ... in much of the world, those who are not members of the national society do not have access to the bureau. Quite frankly, as slow as it may be, every QSL manager should still be required to be a member of his/her national society and respond to bureau cards (even if it takes a couple years) ... particularly with demands like this! Conclusion: LoTW rules. Absolutely! Of course, there are the managers/expeditions that are not putting QSOs on LotW until they receive the card (even though their logs have been available for the on-line searches since day one! That also runs counter to the spirit of LotW. 73, ... RE: [DX-CHAT] QSL costs
Charlie, I think any US ham should send any DX ham FIVE US DOLLARS freely if he wants a card back. Can we be so cheap otherwise? No one is gonna get rich at ham radio, believe me. If u disagree with me, please walk in the shoes of DX ops of modest means; then decide. 73 I doubt that anyone is going to complain about a little bit extra to help out needy hams in the most underdeveloped countries. However, this thread started because a VK manager refuses to handle bureau cards and is asking for a $2 premium above the $2 (actually $1.35 US at current exchange rates) is actually costs to return a card. For managers in Europe, VK/ZL, the USA, VE ... even some of the leading developing nations of South America to behave that way is unacceptable. Not every DX-er is made of money - many even in the USA are retired and on fixed incomes. The round trip cost of a traditional QSL (card, two envelopes, postage, two green stamps) is more than $3.00 and that's not a throw away for some. 73, ... I am disappointed to hear that any USA ham would not want to be generous with DX QSLing. A can of sugar water soda out of the vending machine is now a US dollar. We gotta get away from the old ideas that somehow we are owed a QSL card and want to send the minimum or less to help get one. Re: [DX-CHAT] one more no buro manager
If you read the back side of an IRC it clearly states: THIS COUPON IS EXCHANGABLE IN ANY COUNTRY OF THE UNIVERSAL POSTAL UNIONFOR THE MINIMUM POSTAGE FOR AN UNREGISTWERED PRIORITY ITEM OR AN UNREGISTERED LETTER SENT BY AIR TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY Therefore 1 IRC should suffice for an air mail envelope and a QSL card. Any more is robbery without violence!! Re: [personal] [DX-CHAT] QSL costs
I disagree. First, some people have tried to get rich at ham radio. How successful they were is debatable, but certainly no one would argue that none have tried. Second, In trying to walk in the shoes of DX ops of modest means I believe I would be content and happy to send out thousands of QSL cards so long as I zeroed out the cost of making the cards and return postage. I say this as a US op of modest means. To me, and I'm sure to many other hams QSLing is a pleasurable and integral part of ham radio. Those who consider it a chore and send a card only if they receive more than the cost of sending one should be scorned. lastly, some old ideas are still viable. If I send a card to a DX station with sufficient return postage attached I do expect a card in return. This expectation is based on my own set of ham radio values instilled in me for over 50 years. Why screw around with traditions that have served us well for so long? It's up to the new ops to adjust to our hobby's traditions and values not the other way around. Charles, You're a fine guy but I would not try to shame your fellow hams nor try to establish standards based on your own set of values. We are all different and entitled to practice our hobby in our own way. What you do is your business. Enough said. 73. [DX-CHAT] QSL Costs
One of the most irritating things in QSLing is the DX op who complains about theft in his country's postal system yet never gets a manager in another country with a more secure postal system. One has to wonder if such stations aren't DXing for dollars. If they're not, then they should either tell stations to 1)not send cards or 2)get a manager as mentioned above. What about the DX station that requests green stamps to cover the cost of mailing the card and then sends your card via the Buro? This has happened to me on numerous occassions and probably to just about everyone else.
