[Elecraft] P3 Issue

2021-11-29 Thread Ken Widelitz
About 8 hours into CQWW CW, one of my P3's bandscope function stopped
working. I checked the cables. I powered the unit off. When it came on, it
worked for a few seconds. The outboard monitor worked for a few seconds.
Then it stopped working. I did this a few times with the exact same
results. I never turned it or the radio off after the contest. This
morning before swapping P3s to make sure it was a P3 issue, I turned the
P3 off and when I turned it back on after just a few seconds, it worked
perfectly. I felt half blind during most of the contest, so I want to make
sure I don't run into this again. Any suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K4 now in Rob Sherwood's RX performance table

2021-05-28 Thread Ken Widelitz
Hi Dave,

I am remoting my VY2TT station. Unfortunately it didn't happen before the
Pandemic. For me, the most difficult challenge was remoting the panadapter.
K4 = problem solved. Anyone anywhere with a *tablet* and internet can have
a virtual K4 at their fingertips. As great a radio as it is, the K3s can't
do that.

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones for Hearing Loss

2021-01-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
I use the Heil PARS with Bose QC35 headphones which are far and away the
most comfortable cans I have ever used. Until I got them, I gave up on cans
and just used earbuds. My hearing loss is mostly limited to my left ear, so
I break out the left audio stream to the PARS and adjust volume so it is
centered in my head.

Re: [Elecraft] DB15HD cable sopurce

2021-01-25 Thread Ken Widelitz
Hi Bob and Jim,

Jim mentioned he was looking for a 15 pin through cable. I don't know the
specs on the Y Box. Since I had just moved my radios around I needed a
longer cable to go from my K3 ACC to TopTen band decoder, I was looking for
a 15 pin straight through extension cable, M/F. I misread Jim's post and
thought he was looking for an extension cable as I was.

I had already bought three extension cables that looked like they would do
the trick, but one after the other wasn't what I needed. The first one
that was advertised as straight through actually wasn't and the other two
both had connectors on the K3 ACC end that were molded such that they
couldn't turn and be screwed in to the K3 ACC nuts. That wasn't obvious
from the photos.

The extension cable in the link arrived today and works as I desire.

Hi Jim,

I just had the same experience with a TopTen decoder and a K3. Be careful
of the cables with the molded ends that don't screw-in and can't be
connected to the K3 ACC port without the K3 screw nuts removed from the

[Elecraft] OT - CW Sweepstakes This Weekend

2020-11-06 Thread Ken Widelitz
Please exercise your Elecraft radios of any denomination this weekend in CW
Sweepstakes, even if you are not a "contester," Sweepstakes starts 2100Z
Saturday and ends 0300Z Sunday night (technically Monday AM.)

This is a great way to improve your CW skills. If you are on the slower
side, try around 21060, 14060, 7060, 3560 or up. If you get on Sunday
afternoon or evening for the first time, being "fresh meat," you might
generate DXpedition sized pile-ups.

Find the full rules here:

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones

2020-05-07 Thread Ken Widelitz
Jim and Eric - Great suggestions!

If the feature is added to the K3/K4 to adjust EQ by ear, the AF should be
able to be adjusted by ear also. Maybe a menu item that lets you select
which ear gets some additional DBs.

Using the Heil PRAS in my left ear only, I adjust the volume until my
preferred CW tone frequency is centered in my head. I have always been very
careful about headphone volume. My hearing loss was caused by a virus, so
my being careful didn't save my hearing. Now, I'm sure my left ear volume
is at a dangerously high level, but I'm already mostly deaf in my left ear,
so I'm not concerned about it.

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones

2020-05-07 Thread Ken Widelitz
I recently received the Bose Quiet Comfort II headphones as a gift. I used
them on my next flights to PEI for airplane noise reduction and it works
well for that. They were so comfortable that I used them in the contest
when I arrived in PEI. I now prefer the Bose headphones over earbuds which
I have used for 30 years because I hated over the ear cans as they hurt my
head and made my ears hot (and I tried a number of headphones.) I don't
turn on the noise reduction in PEI, but I do at home as the shack is
noisier at the home QTH. You can keep them plugged in to a USB port, so the
batteries don't run out. I have always used a boom mic so the headphones
are not an issue for SSB.

As long as I am touting products, I have the Heil PRAS in both my shacks. I
built a breakout box so it only is used on my mostly deaf left ear. The
PRAS works so well that I actually forget I have a hearing deficit while
doing SO2R. I have a hearing aid for my left ear, but it doesn't improve
intelligibility at all. The PARS unit improves intelligibility amazingly
well.

[Elecraft] Taking License Test Stories (Way off Topic) and almost time to QRT it.

2020-05-02 Thread Ken Widelitz
I've enjoyed reading these.

I have a few stories, having taken the novice test in the civil defense
room at the local elementary school and the general test at the NYC FCC
office in 1966 as a 16 year old.

Dave Poppins, Mr. FCC NYC in my mind, was a legend as an omnipotent
presence in all things ham radio regulatory, lived in the next town over in
NJ where I grew up. My buddies and I wouldn't key down test our home built
transmitters for more than 15 seconds for fear he would show up out of
nowhere and bust us because we didn't have our novice licenses in hand yet.

My best story is taking the Canadian Basic test. Before buying VY2TT from
Robby, VY2SS, I did a multi-op with his gang. Robby was a Canadian license
examiner, so I arranged to take the Basic at a multi-op. I read the
material and took the multiple choice test. Robby came back a few minutes
later and said, "You better study some more!" and handed me the answer
sheet showing a score in the 30s. I was so embarrassed. Then the gang went
through the questions I "missed" and kept agreeing with my answers. After a
bunch, Robby realized he had been sent the wrong answer sheet.

The best part was Robby had an Advanced test and told me to take it. I told
him I hadn't studied for it and I didn't want to be embarrassed again. He
convinced me to take it and I passed. Having heard me copy code in
contests, he didn't bother with a CW test.

[Elecraft] Power Issue

2020-04-02 Thread Ken Widelitz
When I press the Power button to turn off one of my K3s, the LCD screen
stays lit but shows no information. The P3, powered by the 12v outlet at
the back of the K3 does go off. Of course, if I turn the power supply off,
the LCD screen goes dark. However, when I turn the power supply back on,
the rig comes back on also.

Re: [Elecraft] Can't Transmit SSB using Line In on K3

Problem solved. Operator error.

I had my USB Audio CODEC and 2-USB Audio CODEC reversed and each on the
wrong radio. I actually had screen shots for both setups. I guess I changed
a while ago and forgot to delete the wrong one.

See you all in CQP.

[Elecraft] Can't Transmit SSB using Line In on K3

2019-10-03 Thread Ken Widelitz
I have KIO3Bs for both of my K3s (plural K3, not K3S.) In getting setup for
the CQP with Writelog, I find I cannot transmit SSB using the Line In from
the KIO3B on both radios. If I plug a mic into the rear mic jack and change
the menu MIC SEL setting to rP.H I am able to transmit SSB.

I know the mic is working to the computer's internal sound card, as the
sound settings on the computer shows voice input from the mic.

The KIO3Bs are working as far as reading out the frequency of the radios,
so it is not a cable issue.

The Writelog Sound application shows the same settings I have always used:

Left Radio Rcvr - Microphone (2- USB Audio CODEC)
Xmtr - Speakers (2- USB Audio CODEC) (Allocate
exclusively)

Right Radio Rcvr - Microphone (USB Audio CODEC)
Xmtr - Speakers (USB Audio CODEC) (Allocate exclusively)

Operator Mic - Microphone (Realtech High Definition Audio) (Allocate
exclusively)

Help please!

Re: [Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables

2019-03-27 Thread Ken Widelitz
Hi Ted,

I lost about 60% of the hearing in my left ear about 6 years ago as a result of
a virus that I didn't know I had until I thought I had water in my ear for over
a week went to the doctor. The loss sharply increases after 550 - 600 hz, so it
doesn't affect CW as much as phone. I also have a high frequency tinnitus,
around 12 -14 khz. Honestly, I believe years of hamming have helped me filter
out and deal with the tinnitus. A hearing aid also helps with the tinnitus, but
for me does not help intelligibility at all.

For me the issue with the K3 was I couldn't get enough volume to my left ear
despite tweaking the RX EQ.

I bought the new Heil PRAS as soon as it was available. I built a little
breakout box to put it on the left ear only and I totally forget I have a
hearing loss during contests. The PRAS can be optimized for your CW sweet spot
or for SSB. It works very well. I turn up the volume until a mono signal is
centered in my head overcoming the hearing deficit. I don't know how much
credit the PRAS gets but the first time I used it for SS Phone was in 2018 and
I came in 2nd SOU. I've never made the top 10 in SS Phone in any category ever
before.

Prior to the PRAS I used a FIIO headphone amp. They are much less expensive
($125 vs. $500.) They also worked for me, but IMHO the PRAS is better as it is
designed for ham audio. The negatives are the price (I've asked Bob Heil to
sell it without the powered speaker, but as of yet they don't) and the fact
that it is a mono device (which isn't so much of a negative for me since my
right ear still works fine.) To answer another of your questions, with the
headphone amp I use the other K3 settings as I always have. Before I used a
headphone amp, I never perceived an improvement in hearing from tweaking
filters, RX EQ or other parameters.

Does the increased volume further damage my hearing? I don't know. I don't
care. I am functionally deaf in the left ear already. I do not perceive an
increase in tinnitus or a further loss of hearing after a 48 hour contest as
the result of using a headphone amp. Nor do I perceive an increase in hearing
Morse coming from the fridge, faucet or AC after a CW contest, which I have
always heard.

I m not quite clear about the audiologist s recommendations. Did they tell you
to avoid loud, high frequency sound?

If so, ask them whether they consider 3 kHz to be high frequency. That is the
highest frequency you should hear from an amateur SSB signal. Unless they and
you are in ESSB mode, which would make it 4 kHz.

I expect that they don t consider 3 kHz to be high frequency. If that is true,
you can do what ever you want with RX EQ.

[Elecraft] Mic Issues with Writelog and K3

2019-01-19 Thread Ken Widelitz
My audio input to my K3's has become intermittent with Writelog. I can get
it working, leave the radios/computer for a while and it stops working. I
can get newly recorded messages to transmit, (F key messages sometimes stop
working also intermittently but I've been more successful in getting the F
keys to send messages to the radio) so I know the mic in to the computer is
working and the audio out to the radios is working. But when I try to use
live audio from the mic, nothing gets to the radios. If I plug a mic into
the rear panel mic jack and change the menu settings on the K3, that mic
works. The Echo Mic is checked in Writelog. The Writelog Sound Board Mixer
isn't changed. I've used both old and new versions of Writelog.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Strangeness

Hi Mike,

After cycling the power 10 times or so, just as I was going to try the P3
utility to reload the firmware per your suggestion, the P3 started working
again. If the problem comes back, I'll try reloading the firmware.

[Elecraft] P3 Strangeness

2016-11-03 Thread Ken Widelitz
My P3, which is turned on when the K3 is turned on isn't working properly.
When turned on, it goes to a red screen, then cycles to a blue sceen, a
black screen and a checkerboard screen. The SVGA screen works properly. Some
of the P3 buttons work, some don't.

Any suggestions?

The best RX antenna I have used is the SALA from Array Solutions. I've used

[Elecraft] P3 - SVGA USB Serendipitous Solution

2016-01-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
It seems that if you toggle a USB device on the P3, it loses its knowledge
of the USB device and doesn't recognize the device when it is toggled back
UNLESS the SVGA is in data display mode. IMHO this is a firmware bug.

[Elecraft] P3 Save SVGA state via USB

2016-01-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
I have entered a number of macros and got them working with the Genovation
keyboard per Dave, NK7Z's tutorial. I want to move them to my 2nd P3. I've
used two USB thumb drives. I select the SVGA Usav, press the select know,
the screen shows saving to USB drive, but no file appears on the drive. I
also have a USB switch to move the Genovation keyboard to the 2nd P3. That
appears not to work either. Connecting the Genovation directly to the USB
port does work. I see in the manual a note that with regard to USB drives,
"some will not work."

One peculiar result of unplugging the USB drive is the SVGA display becomes
upside down. That is, the "grass" comes from the top of the screen down and
the waterfall is almost solid. Cycling the power fixes that problem.

Has anyone discovered a particular brand of USB thumb drive that does work?
Any thoughts on why the USB switch doesn't work?

[Elecraft] P3 - SVGA Save/Restore State via USB Working

2016-01-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
I have no idea why it didn't work before, but the SVGASET.SAV file was saved
to the USB Thumb Drive about the 10th time I tried. It restored to my other
P3 perfectly and now the USB switch is working also. Maybe I didn't have the
cables plugged in all the way, although the P3 recognized the USB devices
before and the USB switch LED indicators came on before. In any event, I am
a happy camper and will be even happier when P3 commands can be used with
the next firmware release.

[Elecraft] P3 TX Mon Power Measurement Anomaly

2015-12-28 Thread Ken Widelitz
I am having an anomaly with the TX Mon power measurements on my P3s. The
power varies significantly depending upon where I put the TX sensor in the
RF chain (K3 -> BPF -> Alpha 87A -> Coax Stubs -> Tuner -> Antenna Coax.) I
have a 3" coax jumper on the appropriate end of the P3's TX sensor. I get
similar results on both of my radios connecting the TX sensor in the same
place in the RF chain. For instance, on 20 meters, with the K3 set to full
power and the Alpha 87A in standby, the P3TX Mon displayed power is as
follows:

TX Mon LocationWatts

@K3 RF Out 106 -> 6' coax ->

@ BPF Input 101 That is a 5 watt measured
decrease in a 6' piece of RG-213.

@BPF Output 92 That is a 9 watt measured decrease
through an Array Solutions W3NQN design BPF. -> 6' coax ->

@Alpha 87A RF Out  86   That is a 6 watt measured decrease in a
6' piece of RG-213 and through an Alpha 87A in standby.

The Alpha 87A RF Output LEDs show just over 100 watts (the 4th LED
flickers.) That indicates to me the TX Mon power displayed is incorrect.
When the Alpha 87A shows full output (all green LEDs lit) the TX Mon reads
1329 watts. That is a 13+% difference. I don't have any other power meter as
a reference.

I have measured both coax jumpers and the BPF individually using an AIM 4170
and a 50 ohm load. The SWR is flat at virtually 1:1 for each. The SWR
displayed on the P3 is almost the same when measured at the K3 (1.53:1) and
on the AIM 4170 at the end of the coax to the antenna (1.48:1.)

Does anyone have a good explanation for this? I know there is a calibration
method for the TX Mon, but I that doesn't explain the measured power drop in
the RF chain with the amp in standby.

[Elecraft] P3 Waterfall Off with SVGA Waterfall On???

2015-12-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
The bottom of page 30 of the P3 manual shows a photo with the waterfall
completely off on the P3 with the TX Mon option. The text immediately above
that photo states "Note that in this illustration the waterfall display is
turned off so the spectrum display and the waveform display fill the main
part of the screen."

I see the menu item under SVGA where I can turn the waterfall on or off. I
don't see that option for just the P3 display. What I would like to
accomplish is have the waterfall on the SVGA monitor, but not on the P3
display. Is that possible?

[Elecraft] Using K3 KIO3B USB with Writelog

2015-12-24 Thread Ken Widelitz
What Port Settings would I use in Writelog to grab the frequency from the
Elecraft K3 using the new KIO3B USB connection?

Also, how would I set up the KIO3B USB computer audio out to the K3 mic in
with a SO2R configuration? Currently, the stereo audio out from the computer
goes to a mic splitter box with isolation transformers to a mono left and
mono right output that goes to each K3's mic connector. My thought is I need
to specify separate sound cards in the Writelog Sound Board Mixer and bypass
the mic splitter box. How important would the isolation transformers be with
the KIO3B sound card for mic input? I haven't plugged the KIO3B in to the
computer yet so I'm not sure how I designate which K3 USB Sound Card is
which. I just got the K3's back from being upgraded and wanted to make sure
everything was working with my old RS-232/computer sound card configuration
first.

BTW, as to my new Elecraft P3 upgrades, the PVGA is amazingly cool. Haven't
gotten to the TXMON functions yet.

Excuse the dual posting to the Elecraft and Writelog reflectors, but my
inquiries cover both.

[Elecraft] RX In/Out for External Filter

2013-12-05 Thread Ken Widelitz
The manual indicates you can patch in a narrowband filter between the RX

When I did this with other radios, I had to remove the jumper between the RX

how does it know there is a filter there?

The application is for a filter for the bottom of the 10 meter CW band so I

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Function Key Usage?

2010-09-15 Thread Ken Widelitz
In a strange twist for this list, apparently no use, let alone clever use,
has been found for the P3's function keys.

So to the programming powers that be, how about the P3 function keys being
able to toggle a few preset SPAN and REF LEVEL settings? Or combinations of
those by band?

[Elecraft] P3 Function Key Usage?

2010-09-14 Thread Ken Widelitz
I'd like to hear how P3 owners are programming the Function keys.

What are you programming and why?

[Elecraft] Firmware Sub RX Audio Feature Request

2009-03-28 Thread Ken Widelitz
I would like a CONFIG command to reverse the Main and Sub RX audio so the
main RX audio can be on the right.

In SO2R, if I am listening on both radios, I usually want the main RX audio
from the left radio in the left ear and the main RX audio from the right
radio in the right ear. Currently, with headphones split between the two
radios, the right radio headphone right channel gets the Sub RX audio. In
that situation I can't hear the right radio's main RX audio. I could use
this CONFIG command on the right radio to put the main radio on the right
and solve the problem.

If I am concentrating on pulling a weak station out of the noise and using
diversity mode, I won't be listening to the other radio at the same time, so
both left and right headphone channels are on the same radio. I don't need
the Sub RX to be in the same ear for both radios.

[Elecraft] Sub RX - Diversity vs. Linked

2009-03-14 Thread Ken Widelitz
Is the difference between the Sub RX being Linked and being in Diversity
merely that you can still change the Sub RX frequency using the VFO B knob?
If you can tune the Sub RX independently using the VFO B knob while linked,
what is the purpose of being linked as opposed to just being in Diversity
unlinked? Am I missing something?

Another related issue - because I use Writelog with the W5XD Multi-Keyer for
SO2R, I need to have the headphone audio output from each radio in mono,
that is, the Sub RX and the main RX mixed together, so I can listen to both
left and right radios at the same time. Does mixing the Sub RX and main RX
together in Diversity mode negate any of the Diversity benefits, or will I
get the same benefit, just in mono so I won't know which antenna is doing
the better job at any particular time without playing with the RF gain
control for each?

[Elecraft] K3 Manual change suggestion

2009-03-14 Thread Ken Widelitz
I've been studying the Main/Sub RX Antenna Routing section with an eye
towards how the RX ANT OUT is used. Unless I'm missing something, it isn't
clear in the manual. The answer, YOU NEED TO TURN ON THE RX ANT, is
contained, in a different context, in the following reflector post from
Wayne, which should be integrated into the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd receiver option K3

2009-02-28 Thread Ken Widelitz
Why would you want to do one vs. the other?

73, Ken, K6LA / VY2TT

If you're using the RX antenna for both receivers at the same time, you can
just set the SUB's antenna to MAIN and turn on RX ANT.

If you want to use the RX antenna on the SUB, but stick with ANT1/2 for the
main receiver, set the SUB's antenna to AUX (after having tied it to RX
ANT IN with a BNC 'Y' cable).

[Elecraft] Computer SSB Problesm

2008-12-26 Thread Ken Widelitz
I have two problems.

1. I have two K3s. Neither K3 will release to RX after Writelog sends a
recorded voice message via the sound card, whether in VOX or PTT. Pressing
ESC stops the audio from the computer, but the K3 won't go back to RX.

2. One K3 has garbled audio on recorded voice messages. Live audio, via the
same sound card, is fine. The other K3 sounds fine both live and recorded.

[Elecraft] Earning Customer Loyalty

2008-12-10 Thread Ken Widelitz
I had a two week old K-3 fail after I brought it to PEI for CQWW. The VFO B
knob stopped working so I couldn’t even change menu settings. I was able to
use the radio in CQWW. I brought it home, got an RMA and sent it in to Gary.
Within days he called me to tell me it wouldn’t fail on the bench, but that
he was going to change the VFO B encoder anyway. That is the kind of
pro-active customer service that earns my customer loyalty. I know, I’m
preaching to the choir here. Still, it is nice to see a company, any
company, doing it right with both product and service.

[Elecraft] KXV3 RX ANT IN/OUT Question

2008-11-25 Thread Ken Widelitz
Does the RX ANT IN default to connecting to the RX ANT OUT? If RX ANT is not
selected by the K3, does the RX ANT IN go directly to the K3's RX ANT OUT?

[Elecraft] Using KXV3 with Kenwood SM230

2008-11-08 Thread Ken Widelitz
The Kenwood SM-230 has an input center frequency of 8.830 Mhz. The KXV3's IF
OUT is 8.215 Mhz.

Not surprisingly, I see signals on the SM-230, but can't find them on the
K3.

How do I resolve this discrepancy?
