http://paultan.org/2015/08/20/renault-twizy-ev-launched-in-malaysia-from-rm72k/ Renault Twizy EV launched in Malaysia, from RM72k By Graham Chin / 20 August 2015 [images http://cdn.paultan.org/image/2015/08/Renault_Twizy_Malaysia_-003-630x418.jpg Twizy Urban http://i1.wp.com/paultan.org/image/2015/08/Renault_Twizy_Malaysia_-018.jpg http://i0.wp.com/paultan.org/image/2015/08/Renault_Twizy_Malaysia_-019.jpg http://cdn.paultan.org/image/2015/08/Renault_Twizy_Cargo_-003-1.jpg Twizy Cargo ] Ever wanted a tiny two-seater zero-emissions electric vehicle that can zip through small alleys? You’re in luck, as the Renault Twizy is now officially on sale in Malaysia, priced at RM71,888 for the Urban, and RM73,888 for the Cargo variant. As you can guess, it’s pretty small, this. It measures in at just 2.34 m long, and 1.23 m wide. It’s claimed to be able to achieve a total range of 100 km on the NEDC cycle. This 474 kg quadricycle’s 6.1 kW lithium-ion battery will charge from flat to 80% in a matter of 3.5 hours, through a standard 240 V three pin plug. Power-wise, there’s a small electric motor that’s mated to a one-speed automatic transmission. It offers 17 hp and 57 Nm of torque, and runs from zero to 45 km/h in just 6.1 seconds, and from 30 to 60 km/h in 8.1 seconds. Zero to 100 km/h? Well, the Twizy tops out at 80 km/h. The Twizy uses Pseudo McPherson struts with coil springs on all corners (apparently developed by Renault Sport) while the wheels are small 13-inch items (bi-tone alloys on the Urban, steel wheels on the Cargo) wrapped in 125/80 R13 tyres up front and 145/80 R13 tyres round the back. Inside, there’s no air-conditioning in the Twizy, and neither does it have windows on the sides. Save for a windscreen that has a single wiper blade, one will have to rely on good ol’ fresh air to stay cool. Just hope that it doesn’t rain, though. A Bluetooth handsfree kit with music playback and a two-speaker sound system are standard. As for storage, the Twizy Urban has a lockable 31-litre space underneath the driver’s seat, while the Cargo gets a bigger 180-litre area at the back. The larger cargo area takes up the space of the rear seat, however, making the Twizy Cargo a one-seater. Safety-wise, there’s one airbag, a four-point seatbelt for the driver and a three-point belt for the rear passenger (Twizy Urban only, obviously). No, there’s no electronic stability control or traction control available. The Renault Twizy comes with a two-year/50,000 km manufacturer’s warranty for the base vehicle, and a three-year/50,000 km coverage for the traction battery and electric drivetrain. The service interval is every 10,000 km or six months, in case you’re wondering. [EVDL] EVLN: The Sound Of Formula-E Race e-Cars (v)
http://gas2.org/2015/08/15/listen-sound-new-formula-e-cars/ Listen To The Sound Of New Formula E Cars August 15th, 2015 by Steve Hanley [video flash] Listen to the sound of the new Formula E cars during pre-season testing at Silverstone in England. They sound pretty ferocious, don’t they? To my ear, they are beginning to sound like their Formula One cousins that feature gasoline-electric hybrid power trains. Before Formula E racing began, most motor sport addicts (like myself) assumed that watching electric cars race would be like watching roller derby with the sound off. Actually, it turned out to be rather good. In the end, the series championship came down to a single point and was not decided until the final corner of the final lap of the final race. Racing doesn’t get much closer than that. To the surprise of many, the electric race cars actually made some race-car-like noises. Electric motors are not quite as silent as we thought they were, especially when operating under heavy load. After the first season, dozens of cities around the world were asking series CEO, Alejandro Agag, to add them to the calendar. The series rules have been carefully crafted. Agag knows his brainchild will have to walk before it can run. In order to get potential teams interested in the series in the first place, the original set of rules called for everyone to campaign the same car — same motor, same battery, same tires, same aerodynamics, same brakes, and same motor control systems. For 2015, the rules have been loosened, at least a little. This year, the teams are free to use their own motor, inverter, gearbox, and cooling system. The batteries are still the same for everyone, so the objective for the new year is to use the power available as efficiently as possible. Perhaps Richard Branson is right when he says Formula E will surpass Formula One in 5 years. But first, larger batteries that can race for more than a half hour at a time will be needed. The teams are already working on that. [EVDL] EVLN: Zoe Test Drive Review

Two years after trying out the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Volkswagen e-Up!, Smart Electric Drive, and Renault Twizy, I got my hands on the popular electric car that barely escaped my grasp a few times at EVS27 in Barcelona. For the most part, it was better than I expected it would be. However, there were some downsides to the vehicle that I wasn’t prepared for as well. Renault Zoe Acceleration First of all, let’s talk about the big dog — acceleration. Instant torque and the wonderful acceleration that comes with it is the first or second biggest consumer advantage of electric cars for most electric car drivers. Like I said, it has been a couple of years since I drove all of those electric cars listed above. The biggest thing that caught my attention at the time was the wonderful, quick acceleration those vehicles had, and also how smooth and quiet that acceleration was. But I was starting to wonder recently if my perception had been warped, or if I was flowering it up too much in my memory. I recently (in the past two months or so) rented a Mercedes A180, a Mercedes C180, and a BMW 320i. They were much nicer than the other gasmobiles I rented in the past year or so, so I was starting to wonder if they perhaps compared more favorably to affordable electrics like the Leaf and Zoe. I also drove the Tesla P85D a few months ago, which completely messed me up and warped my perception of reality and “what a car is.” Then, about one month ago, I test drove a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Expecting to love the acceleration like I had when I first drove the electric cars listed above, I was a little let down, as it wasn’t as thrilling as before. So I was thinking, “Is my memory warped? Were those electric cars as nice as I think I remember?” Indeed, I did remember correctly. Electric drive rocks. I love it, and I can’t imagine anyone not loving it. Test driving the Renault Zoe, I could quickly tell that it totally kicked the butts of the Mercedes A180, Mercedes C180, and BMW 320i… and every other gasmobile I’ve ever driven. Of course, it didn’t compare to the Tesla P85D (at a price ~$100,000 lower, how could it?), but it was much better than those three gasmobiles, the Toyota Auris Hybrid I recently drove, and also the two plug-in hybrids I’ve driven — the Outlander PHEV and the Audi A3 e-tron (which I test drove about an hour after the Zoe — review coming soon, along with more on the difference between 100% electrics and PHEVs). Bottom line: The Zoe’s acceleration was great. I didn’t keep my eye on the speedometer, but the high-quality acceleration did taper off at some point, which I think was around 30 mph. Again, it’s no P85D, but it’s often just that first 30 mph or so where quick acceleration comes in handy. We don’t typically drive on 0–60 mph race tracks. Interior One thing that impressed me was the great visibility, particularly in the front. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to phrase this and talk about the specifics of such matters, but the bottom line is that there was a lot of glass and I could see around the car really well, which I (and many others) hugely appreciate. It makes driving much less stressful… and much safer. Both in the front and the back, you feel like you are sitting up quite higher, somewhat like in a crossover/CUV. The Renault sales guy pointed out that the battery sits underneath the seats, and thus bumps the humans inside up a bit. Overall, that left for quite a lot of space, yet another thing I was impressed with. There was a lot of space the in front, what looked like a ton of space in the trunk, and more space in the back seat than I would have expected. At about 6’1″, I was able to sit in the back seat comfortably, with extra room (not at all like on my Ryanair flight to the UK). It doesn’t look that way in the pictures, but I’ll share them anyway: One place where Renault clearly cut some costs was in the interior materials. They are not what you’d find in a $50,000 car, but this certainly isn’t a $50,000 car. The starting price is £13,445 (~$21,000). But I’ll get to pricing matters in a minute. The steering wheel was not my favorite — it wasn’t like the thick ones I had in the Mercedes A180,

I bet this guy did not even know he was doing something wrong. As this is standard procedure on many Chinese cities. :D Most get away without a single scratch as everyone knows bicycles are everywhere. Which is exactly the opposite situation in most US cities. Right? The thing to observe here could be how Chinese drive billions of electric miles every day. Now that's something to talk about!
