I'll have to see if I have my copy of Bill Moyers PBS special Healing and the Mind. One of it's episodes details the clinical work of Jon Kabat-Zinn (son in law of the late Howard Zinn) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed what's come to called MBSR, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction. It's often used for people with chronic pain. In some places, insurance covers the 8-week course. It's also very reasonable, around 400 USD I believe. The Moyers documentary is quite good, as it shows people with really bad pain working with it via this course. I'll post a link later off list. Very inspiring. I also recently posted a link to an excellent paper on MBSR (for anxiety and depression) which appeared in the December Current Psychiatry. Here's a tool to find a program, wherever you live: http://www.umassmed.edu/cfm/mbsr/ http://www.mindfullivingprograms.com/whatMBSR.php
[FairfieldLife] Question for Vaj
Vaj, somewhere I seem to remember you mentioning studies done on the use of Mindfulness to alleviate chronic pain. If this is a real memory, and you know of such studies, or people who are doing this, could you send that info to me? This is not for me but for a new cyber-acquaintance who has been fighting chronic pain for years, and now all that alleviates it is Oxycotin. I think she lives in North Carolina. Thanks in advance. No need to post any reply here, unless you think others would be interested. You know where to reach me via email.

Spontaneous "upper-wash" kriya?

Re: [FairfieldLife] Question for Vaj
I read this stuff but don't always look at what journal it's in etc. Since much of this is on the web, it should be easy to find--esp. if you have Medline or similar access. I've read the abridged accounts of the Science and Life series and they contain numerous refs. [FairfieldLife] Question for Vaj
Vaj, I was thinking of putting a website together that consists of all robust scientific research published in serious peer-reviewed scientific journals. The above would be my criteria for inclusion. I think there is some on Buddhist meditation and Tibetan meditation. Do you know the references for such and where can I find them, and which journal they were published in? Or anynody know of published research on any meditaion or prayer or anything? It would be more interesting to have some variation (to add to the 100 or so TM peer-reviewed double blind published studies in scientific journals) for comparison, but I need help finding them.
