The recommendation was to change to a newer version of the compiler which I did and the problem went away. I do;-) The simplest ways are to build it either with fink ( http://www.finkproject.org/ : gcc4.5.2) or macports ( http://www.macports.org/ : gcc4.5.3 or 4.6 beta).

I know the code is bad. It is just that the compiler crashed and requested a bug report.
