I was about to respond if it is just turning off the system why not use
'shutdown +300' which does the same as above. But thought of checking
the diff between shutdown and poweroff. I looks like shutdown does
things more gracefully than poweroff. But shutdown does not switch off
the machine, if you want shutdown to do so you need to use -P.

As per the link below

Oops. This thread is getting a bit tedious.

Let us move on.

The idea is never to cron this reboot business. I run the script I sent
only when I feel like it. Not always. So it is one shot like at(1).

So at(1) is a good tool to use for this purpose too.

'at' is a one time deal. It is fine if you want your machine to
shutdown at a specific time. I also use it to _start_ the download of
iso or big package files after midnight but what about shutting down
the machine after the download is complete? It is not deterministic
therefore you need to monitor the no. of TCP connections on your
system at regular intervals. IMO, cron is the best option.

[Ilugc] suggestions on a new site

2010-05-23 Thread Perl Programmer
Dear Friends

Brief intro befor coming to question

I am part of vast majority of this group ( silient spectators ) , made a
few posts although not from this mail id .

been a unix ,perl ,cms developer for most of my career , now I am involed
as lead deveoper for one of largest banking sites.

My client is worried that someone will hack into their new site ( banking
site ,security integerity etc etc )

Even though we carried out a penetration test by a specialist team from
Argentina and Isreal there is really nothing in the report except known
vulnarabilites like sql injection ,cross script attack and how to prevent
them , would have been happy if they were identified. Basically a crap
report running into thousands of pages virtually meaningless/Even after the
report came out he (client ) was asking me to try to break into the
application.

Mostly there can be only 2 ways to hack into a system ( correct me if I am
wrong )

1) Basically the system admin is an idiot or

2) Some thusfar unknown vulnarabilty which is exploited

Most of us would be fascinated if someone says they hacked into something (
Ankit fadia ) , atleast eager to find out what they did, which they probably
will never tell or nothing might have happenned ( like tcs.com hack in
techcrunch )

Every often we can read in newspapers about hacking festivals in colleges
where something was hacked in under X hours and prizes distributed by Mr X (
I wish this is as simple )

 Enough background ,now the question

1) I want to setup a server where commonly used tools will be available
( a simple linux box with apache + one DB + one cms + what ever the machine
config can support ), users will get appropriate access including shell +
whatever , even root if that’s required.

2) Users can freely experiment without any fear of anything ( no fear
of internals for students & no legal action whatsoever. This is a outright
promise

3) Subject to small fee ( not for profitabilty but for maintanence ) ,
collecting fee may not be a good idea afterall /Any sponsors for servers &
bandwidth?

4) Anyone who are really sucessful in their experiments must be
willing to share their experiences , anonymously also welcome.

5) T&C to be decided and agreed

Do you think this a good enough idea to be implemented ?

+usual disclaimer as my cats have apprently learned to type I am in no way
responsible for anything including content of this email and any flame war
that might happen . Nor my employer has any relation to this mail . this
mail is in good faith and is meant to help students and programming

Great start. ;)

My academic credentials were similar. I got around 66% and I studied ECE.

But I studied a very long time ago.

I do lot of research solving real life problems day in day out. Some
of the networking
problems I solve are world class. No academic environment can give you that.

Industry is better. More seriousness, more dividends and you tend to meet better
 people there.

But there is no rule.

Unless you do research from Stanford or MIT or Berkeley you may not
get the right
exposure I think.

But these days a lot of innovation, creativity and research happens in
the open source
world. Not in any of the top univs.

The bazaar proved a success leaving the temples of education behind.

I am from a good college but I am no IITian.

One gets a lot of great ideas but any great idea be it a product idea
or whatever
else you are talking about needs a lot of time and whetting out to attain
fruition.

Most of our ideas appear great ab initio but turn out to be disasters later.

It is very likely that your current focus areas are totally off the mark.

Over time you will learn that an idea has to possess your being to quote Swami
Vivekananda.

"It should enter every pore of the body, become your nerve, blood vessels and
pulsate in every tissue."

Sorry if I misquote this great saint.

That is the idea. Unless you have such a strong resolve success is very hard.

I had a burning desire to start a company in 2000. Even now I have not
succeeded.

Your goal is not so big but still you need to know how strongly the idea has
entered your system.

You should not change your mind even if the entire world is against you. Most
people cannot even survive a storm. ;)

>      I am at this stage only having lot of confusions to set my goal
> towards career and settle in a job or do higher studies.
>

I disagree.

I had two years of experience working in the best company in India at that time.

I had got into it through campus.

You don't have such credentials yet. Your thinking right now cannot
give you right
answers as you don't have exposure/experience yet.

So first do the best in your circumstances and take up a job in the
favorite area, say
PHP.

That is important.

Lot of boys I meet don't know which area to embrace. One should know
that clearly.

Take my case. I have stuck to UNIX for the past 14 years and still going strong.

In your situation you have that choice. There are companies working on
every domain
you can imagine in Chennai and Bangalore.

But no company can give you a career. They can only give you a job.

You have to build a career over 10 years.

Best of luck and May God shower you with blessings!

Your brother,
Girish

You don't mention the college and your academic credentials. ;)

Do you want to do Phd in cloud computing?

Why?

What has php got to do with cloud computing?

You say you want job opportunities in India and you also say you want to do Phd.

I am confused.

For doing Phd you have to live without income for 5 years or with a stipend.

And even after 5 years there is no guarantee you will get a 'Dr' in
front of your name.

What is your goal in life?

In my case I had a lot of difficulty choosing my goal when I had around 2 years
experience.

I also had a plan to do Phd abroad but I quickly dropped the idea. It was very
painful for me to come to terms with my confusion but things started
stabilizing
after a few months.

It is very important to know what personality type you are.

Are you a working type or an academic kind?

Or can you start a company?
