2013-05-29 Thread Pankaj Kumar
Chopta itself is a nice place and you might need lot of time to spend
on it. You might like going up to Tunganath if you wish. Below the
lower gate of Tunganath there are scatterred forests around which is
good. On the moss covered rocks you might find Pleione flowering in
these days and on ground Goodyera viridiflora. If you go up and if you
are lucky to find the spot then you can find Dactylorrhiza, Gymnadenia
and also three species of Slipper Orchids, Cypripedium cordigerum, C.
elegans and C. himalaicum in flower. In the lower part you will find
lot of Dendrobiums, Eria, Coelogyne etc. If you check the streams in
the evening you might see the cascade frog, Amolops formosus.
Best wishes
Pankaj

[efloraofindia:156196] Re: Over to mini Switzerland in Uttarakhand

2013-05-29 Thread D.S Rawat
Sir
I have suggested to Dr Balkar Sir about it.
In this area some very good oak forests (Q.semecarpifoila and
Q.leucotrichophora) exist below Chopta (around Dugalbitta) where temperate
orchids will be abundant. If you take another route for return, via Mandal
- Gopeshwar - Chamoli- Rudraprayag; it is rewarding with dense foreests
between Chopta to Mandal.
On way to Tungnath Rhododendron campanulatum will be in bloom near
timberline. May found Corydalis diphylla, Trillium govanianum, Primula
sessilis, P.edgeworthii, P.denticulata too in this route. However, a
typical habitat of three species of Cypripediun (as Dr Pankaj has
mentioned) is difficult to approach as it is behind temple on very steep
slope.
If visiting Tungnath an alpine garden of Garhwal University may be visited
for few important medicinal plants, it is visible from the route.
As always in the high altitudes, rain or hail may greet in the afternoon.

Sir,

This semi-parasite grows on mango trees, not rare. Among the several *
Loranthus* listed the Bengal Plants two are 1) *Loranthus globosus* Roxb.
and 2) *Loranthus ampullaceus* Roxb.

While The Plant Lists recognizes *Loranthus ampullaceus* Roxb. as *Macrosolen
cochinchinensis* (Lour.) Tiegh., it doesn't recognize *Loranthus globosus*
Roxb.

On the other hand, according to Flora of Nepal *Loranthus globosus* Roxb.
is a synonym of *Macrosolen cochinchinensis* (Lour.) Tiegh.

Flora Indica (vol.1; p550 552) informs -
*L. globosus* grows common on trees throughout Bengal, flowers are small,
sessile, greenish-orange colour
*L. ampullaceus* found on trees the forests of Silhet, but seems to prefer
the mango tree, flowers pretty large, greenish yellow.

Because -

1) as per Flora of British India, vol2, p493; *Eugenia assimilis*

distributed in Srilanka
2) a site also informs the same -

3) another variety is again in Srilanka -

4) a search for *Syzygium assimile*, in India yields nothing, except
another post in our group.

So, please have a relook.

The picture in File 2 has been taken today, also in SGNP,
Mumbai..seems like some specie of Trewia ? Fruit is much larger then
the the fruit of Trewia nudiflora and the aril on the seeds are not at all
palatable. This tree was about 60 to 70 ft tall

Both the trees are fruiting profusely.

Please help to solve the id of these beautiful trees.
