Chopta itself is a nice place and you might need lot of time to spend on it. You might like going up to Tunganath if you wish. Below the lower gate of Tunganath there are scatterred forests around which is good. On the moss covered rocks you might find Pleione flowering in these days and on ground Goodyera viridiflora. If you go up and if you are lucky to find the spot then you can find Dactylorrhiza, Gymnadenia and also three species of Slipper Orchids, Cypripedium cordigerum, C. elegans and C. himalaicum in flower. In the lower part you will find lot of Dendrobiums, Eria, Coelogyne etc. If you check the streams in the evening you might see the cascade frog, Amolops formosus. This would be Ipomoea turbinata looking at muricate (bluntly spinous) stems, season, appearance and colour of the flower. Flower size 5-6 cm can confirm the ID. Further if the picture was taken at evening it will certainly be I. turbinata. Peduncles enlarged in fruits is the key to its ID. [efloraofindia:156196] Re: Over to mini Switzerland in Uttarakhand
Sir I have suggested to Dr Balkar Sir about it. In this area some very good oak forests (Q.semecarpifoila and Q.leucotrichophora) exist below Chopta (around Dugalbitta) where temperate orchids will be abundant. If you take another route for return, via Mandal - Gopeshwar - Chamoli- Rudraprayag; it is rewarding with dense foreests between Chopta to Mandal. On way to Tungnath Rhododendron campanulatum will be in bloom near timberline. May found Corydalis diphylla, Trillium govanianum, Primula sessilis, P.edgeworthii, P.denticulata too in this route. However, a typical habitat of three species of Cypripediun (as Dr Pankaj has mentioned) is difficult to approach as it is behind temple on very steep slope. If visiting Tungnath an alpine garden of Garhwal University may be visited for few important medicinal plants, it is visible from the route. As always in the high altitudes, rain or hail may greet in the afternoon. Re: [efloraofindia:156219] Re: Over to mini Switzerland in Uttarakhand
Dear All reached just now in haridwar at 1:00 Am Staying in Haridwar and will move towards Chopta in Morning. Thanks Nidhan Ji for Best wishes and Rawat ji for further suggestions. Thanks On Wed, May 29, 2013 at 2:12 PM, D.S Rawat drdsrawat.alpin...@gmail.comwrote: Sir I have suggested to Dr Balkar Sir about it. Hope to get some good photographs, especially of orchids as our orchid expert Smita ji is joining us. Myself, my wife, Balkar ji and Smita would be visiting the area, Nidhan ji having to cancel due to some health problem. Any suggestions about areas to focus, especially from Rawat ji, Tiwari ji and Pankaj ji who know the area very well, are welcome. Good morning Pudji Ji Thank you very much for id suggestion. But, i could not find much data in the net. I'm not sure if this species can be *S. assimile* Thwaites. Because - 1) as per Flora of British India, vol2, p493; *Eugenia assimilis* Thwaiteshttp://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-74398is distributed in Srilanka 2) a site also informs the same - http://plants.jstor.org/specimen/k000821402?history=true 3) another variety is again in Srilanka - http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/30884/0 4) a search for *Syzygium assimile*, in India yields nothing, except another post in our group. Best wishes to the team!!! Our main focus would be Chopta, considered as mini Switzerland, We may explore surrounding areas spending some time at Rishikesh, Lansdowne and Srinagar. I won't be able to participate in Asteraceae Fortnight for first three days, but possibly try to compensate 4th onwards. Nidhan ji, Rawat ji, Dinesh ji, I am sure will keep you busy with uploads in our absence. -- Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018.
