Re: [IRCA] Alaska AM DX December 10th
Walt: CKYL gives out a complete ID around 10 - 5 minutes before TOH that starts with their AM, followed by the FM and all their repeaters. However, the AM won't be around much longer as they have an application into the CRTC to shut it down and become a FM station. You said that they are difficult to get by, at least you can get by them. I live a mile from their transmitter and are impossible to get by. Can't happen soon enough for me. Many carriers up here Don. Spread across the band from 153 to the high 1400’s. Several producing audio with 1413 being the best, with two men talking in what sounded like Russian. Only snippets of audio from 189. 1215 produced very poor audio at time, otherwise just a carrier. The remainder of the audio producers were too low to get the language. Hi Don: I started listening shortly after sunset which occurs around 20:45 local this time of year. At first there were just a few carriers and faint audio from 1377-France and 1422-Germany. And it just got better from there. I did see carriers on both 1458 and 1485, but no audio. I stopped listening somewhere around 22:30 planning on going over the recording today. For the very first time since I bought the Perseus, it failed to record. Dunno why as it recorded perfectly earlier and again later on. I’ve given up on 1566-Benin for this year. Hi Don: Many thanks for the heads up. Been thinking I should be checking out the band, but never quite got around to doing it. Didn’t forget tonight tho. Dozens of carriers from a low of 189 to above the 1500’s, tho most were above 999, Many were producing audio: France on 1206, 1278, 1377, 1577; Germany on 1107, 1422; UK on 909, 1053, 1089, 1215, 1053, 1341; Unid on1359. The highlight of the session was the UK on 1341 which turned out to the BBC’s Radio Ulster transmitter in Northern Ireland. No formal ID because it faded out at the TOH, but two men with Irish accents talking and a mention of the BBC at 06:01 was sufficient for me. [IRCA] Question to the left coast guys
Hi All: Early this morning I heard a pefect ID for CBC Radio One that mentioned 88.1 and 690, on 530kHz. I have spent some time on line searching for a CBC repeater on 530 with any success, so does anyone know of this? Another possibility, it could have been a mixing product from my local on 610. Last week one of their towers was struck by lightning and they were off air, both their AM and FM for more than a day. Both are back up now tho they both sound terrible. The AM is running it's full 10kW, but the modulation is way down to the point of not being able to hear it on my truck radio. The FM is LH channel only and up and down in volume. If what I heard on 530 was caused by CKYL-610, I haven't yet been able to figure out the math. In the past when I've heard mixing products caused by CKYL, it's always been there underneath the product signal. Not this time. Anyone have any suggestions? Many thannks to all those that made these tests happen. [IRCA] 1340-KYLT-Missoula
Four nights ago I heard someone on 1340 IDing as Missoula's sports leader, 1450-KGRZ, or words to that effect. Couldn't figure this out so I did some checking. It turns out that 1340-KYLT-Missoula is simulcasting 1450-KGRZ-Missoula with sports programming. This was confirmed by Larry Godwin of Missoula by a phone call to the station and an air check. [IRCA] Last nights WKVQ test.
Unlike everyone else out west, I did hear one very small portion of last nights test. At 00:02:50 I heard an ID in morse followed by what can only be described as a "whoop whoop" sound. Listened to the whole half hour and never heard any more, and what I did hear was only made possible because someone very kindly mentioned the times of when they had heard the morse IDs. Without this prior knowledge I don't think I would have heard it. I guess this makes up for me not hearing the previous test. Heard with my Perseus using my east/west beverage. [IRCA] WGBW DX test
Hi Everyone: Listening last night while the test was on, 1590 was, as usual, one big jumble of noise. Only IDs I heard at the time were for KBND and KFLE. So I quit listening live as I knew, sooner or later, people would report hearing IDs and TTs at certain times. And they did. Armed with a list of what was heard at what time I went back over the recording this morning and sure enough all the morse IDs and TTs were there, along with flute music. Only thing missing were the voice IDs. Surprisingly, all this was heard on my EWE as somehow I had forgotten to switch over to my E/W beverage. Lots of carriers across the band tonight, with weak audio noted from France on 1377, Spain on 855, and Germany on 1269. Germany is actually doing quite well at the moment. Many TA carriers noted up here as well. Only one developed any audio, 1215-UK, and that was poor at best. Re: [IRCA] TAs from the WCNA
Barry: TA's are in Northern Alberta most afternoons starting an hour or so before local sunset and then fading down into the noise around sunset. Most of the time very few have any audio, tho the carriers show quite clearly on the Perseus waterfall display. Today was very much different with the first TA (1422-Germany) showing up at 13:20 MST (20:20UTC) At that time of day the sun here is only 30 minutes or so past it's zenith so it was real early for a TA. In all I had around 30 or so with audio plus about the same number of carriers before they faded down around sunset. Most were European in origin with only a couple from the middle east. Some hadn't been heard here in years, like 945 & 711 from France and others were regulars like 1134-Croatia and UK-1215. Two frequencies, 855 and 1152, each had 2 stations fighting for dominance. The beauty of owning a Perseus is the ability to record the whole band while listening to one particular frequency. The downside is the huge files it produces and the time it takes to run thru them all. I still wading thru them. Hi Everyone: For the first time since I bought the Perseus some weeks back, I set it up last night to record a block of frequencies centered on 580 using my Hawaiian BOG. My goal was to try and log either KVMI or KQNG in Hawaii. As expected, the Perseus produced some huge files to go over today which I did this afternoon. I've got to find a better time to check them as I missed all the early afternoon TA activity. Cutting a long story short, I never heard either target station. However, at 06:00MST (08:00EST) I heard choral music and an ID for KRSA-Petersburg, Alaska. Totally unexpected and very welcome here, my fourth new Alaskan of the season. Re: [IRCA] (ho hum) TA's
Another evening of TA evidence in western Canada. Some audio on Farda-1575, though not very good level. Occasional weak talk on 1539, and a fair carrier on 1503 are rounding things out at the moment. Not much yet in the lower band. Perhaps you should have checked earlier Nick. Up here there were many TAs in as early as 13:30MST. Some with pretty fair signals. 1053 & 1215-UK were both very good, as were 1134-Croatia and 855-Spain. Unusually 1575-Farda was very poor, tho audible. Unfortunately the whole band was very noisy, probably because of the very thick hoar frost which currently covers everything including all my antennas and the trees they are attached to. Of course all the BOGs are buried under the snow. Many other TAs had audio, tho too poor to ID. The waterfall on the Perseus showed even more weak signals without audio. As local sunset approached they all faded under the signals from down south, tho the carriers still show on the Perseus. The recording started with faint C/W music under presumed CHTK. At 09:00 MST (11:00) I heard and ID for KVOK-Kodiak and then into ABC news. This is my third new Alaskan this season. Spending that amount of time on 560 was not a total waste as I also added WIND and CHTK to my overall logbook. Re: [IRCA] Faroe Islands-531
Faroe Islands-531 fair atop channel 2112-2115 UTC with Christmas pop music. Thanks for the headsup Marc. At long last I have heard them here, parallel to their web stream. Without the web stream I would never have ID'd them as they were barely above the noise floor. Been after this one for several weeks now. New country for me. Many other TA's in well before local sunset, tho nothing else new and all fairly low in strength. Re: [IRCA] TA's for 12/14/09 Victoria
0316 R. Maria-675, poor in splatter, but w/laid back vocal mx, then woman talking, followed 30 seconds later on webstream. Interesting Nick. Up here TA's were in from around 14:30 local, possibly even earlier if I had checked sooner, and all were above 999khz. This has to be the earliest I have heard TA's from here, even in the past when 1314-Norway was a regular, I never had it in any earlier than around 15:30. Some were at good levels too, like 999-Moldavia and 1089-Russia. 1575-UAE was at a good level as well, unlike yesterday. Also, unlike yesterday I managed one new one, which also was my second TA logged on a domestic frequency, 1170-Russia, parallel to both 999 and 1089. I also had someone on 1395 with what sounded like Russian, so possibly Albania. Interestingly, there was someone under the 999 Russian which sounded Arabic, so possibly Morocco. The Saudi on 1521 was also heard at a fair level. As the sun gradually sank in to the south western horizon and domestics faded up, the TAs faded down to become nothing but carriers around sunset. Re: [IRCA] Alberta TAs
The TAs didn't come in as early as yesterday, nor are they in as well, but still some pretty good signals this afternoon. All you heard were in here early this afternoon while the sun was still pretty high in the sky. Can't speak about yesterday as I never turned the radio until after dark, some today were putting in pretty awesome signals. Russia on 1089 was a minimum of S-9 with Moldova-999 and Croatia-1134 tied for a very close second. Unfortunately I was called away around 3.30 local and by the time I returned at 5.00 all that remained were carriers. Strangely UAE-1575 was down in the noise. Unfortunately nothing new. All heard on my EWE. [IRCA] New logging
Hi Everyone: After sitting on 550 for the past 4 consecutive nights and listening to many KARI/KOAC/KFYR ID's, I finally I heard my target station this morning. [IRCA] Question for Perseus users
Hi Everyone: I've had my Perseus a few weeks now and after a few minor hiccups early on, everything is now working as it should, though I wish there was a way to change the time on it's display to show local time instead of being permanently set to UTC, which I so rarely use. In order to realize more of it's incredible potential I would like to install the Perseus Record Scheduler ( http://prs.redirectme.net/ ) so I can record at all those unearthly TOH periods before local sunrise, and, more importantly, long before I get up. However, in order do that the instructions tell me that I need to download and instal Microsoft's .Net Framework 3.5. And the Microsoft download website tells me I need to download and install Windows Installer 3.1. Before I attempt this I would like to ask other Perseus users in the group about any potential pitfalls, problems, dangers I might encounter doing so. Up until last night I had never even heard of these programs, so I'm flying blind here and I am not i! nstrument rated. Any warnings, suggestions would be appreciated. As Nick mentioned, the best for several days. Yeah I had a few with fair audio, 1134 and 1575 come to mind. [IRCA] Perseus receiver
Hi Everyone: Ten days ago I placed an order for a Perseus receiver. Not a sudden decision by any means as I had been thinking of getting one for almost a year. The sudden death of my old Dell computer was the catalyst I needed. It was approaching it's 9th birthday, well past it's best before date and not worth repairing so a replacement suitable for driving a SDR was found. The Perseus arrived here last Friday and I've spent the past two evenings learning something about it. All I can say so far is "Wow!" this machine is incredible. Yesterday evening I could see many TA's across the whole band, admittedly most of them were just carriers, but to actually see them is beyond belief. Even on the longwave beacons I could actually read the Morse code IDs being transmitted on the screen. Yet months ago when I first read about this waterfall display in the users manual I thought "I will never use that" and now I'm thinking I will use it all the time. It's gonna take a while before I learn everyt! hing it can do, but it's gonna be a fun time. Re: [IRCA] New logging
Many thanks to Pat, Mike and Walt for the kudos. Congrats Mike! It does surprise me you don't have Alaskans all over the dial, as close as you are. I might be closer in terms of miles Pat, but Alaskans from here are far from easy. All my recent catches have been early morning around local sunrise when most lower 48 stations have faded down. Even then I have to contend with the Albertans. Also, I'm not at the dials at that time and my phasor does not always hold a null overnight. [IRCA] New logging
Hi Everyone: In my quest to log more Alaskans I have started earlier this year, even tho I don't have my Alaskan BOG laid down yet. Being somewhat encouraged by Pat's frequent reporting of the Alaskans he has heard I have spent more than a few nights parked on 670 in the fond hope of hearing Dillingham. The big problem with this frequency is KBOI, which I heard ID many times along with WSCR. Several mornings ago I heard jazz type music followed by an undecipherable ID, which I did suspect was my target station. Then this morning at 08:00MDT (10:00EDT) I heard this music again followed by a reasonably clear ID for "KDLG-Dillingham" and then into news. Fortunately this time KBOI was barely audible in the background. [IRCA] TAs
Hi All: Many TAs in here tonight. First noted over an hour before local sunset. Most TA split frequencies across the band had at least a carrier, many had audio, tho mostly faint. A couple of surprises heard, english pop music on 945 which paralled 1377 was Toulouse, France and the UK's Talksport on 1089, neither of which is heard often here, whereas Talksport on 1053 is much more common as is France on 1377. Two men talking rapidly in Spanish on 855 was most certainly Spain which is a new country for me. I also heard music and arabic language spoken on 1476 which could have been the UAE, plus music and arabic type chanting on 1404 which could have been Iran, so 2 tentatives there. An hour or so after local sunset the US stations had faded up, most TAs were nothing but faint carriers. Nothing but faint carriers heard on longwave. Re: [IRCA] WZFG 1100
It took me a while to get a positive ID from this station. Last evening they were in here loud and clear with many mentions of the floods, emergency phone numbers, etc. Then slowly they faded down into the KFAX/KNZZ/WTAM mix never to return. So I resorted to my usual method of overnight recordings with my timer setup. And lo and behold slightly before 06:00MST (08:00EST) I heard the "Talkradio AM 11 Hundred, The Flag" ID twice and at the TOH I heard the full ID, "AM 110 The Flag WZFG Dilworth Fargo Moorehead." My thanks to everyone who reported this, and for giving the ID details. At the very least I knew what to listen for, but as it turned out it wasn't necessary as the ID I heard was loud and clear. Re: [IRCA] Changes at KCPW 1010 Salt Lake City
From: "Scott Fybush" The AM signal is a 50 kW daytime boomer that's heard across most of Utah and into the surrounding states; at night it drops to 194 watts, and I don't ever recall it being reported at any great distance after dark. Scott: I managed to log them late one December afternoon 4 years ago up here in Northern Alberta. One of the few times I've been able to null CBR-Calgary down to nothing. As it was before local sunset, I'm assuming they were still on day power. Re: [IRCA] New Hawaiian heard
From: "Patrick Martin" 10 Hawaiians from SE Alberta is not bad. They don't seem to propagate inland as well as they did. A mile from the Pacific, Hawaiians are not all that great here! Pat, as usual Nigel has done better than I have. My total is only 7 heard. Also, like Nigel, my Alaskan total passed the Hawaiian total several years back. It currently stands at 13 with just one new one added this season. Re: [IRCA] New Hawaiian heard
From: "Patrick Martin" Unfortunately Hawaiian cx are not what they once were. Bring back the lte 70s to the mid 80s DU conditions where Hawaiians were all over the dial night after night. Pat: I remember conditions being like that back then. In those days Hawaiian stations were very regular up here. In fact my second ever QSL came from KORL, the first being from KFAR in Alaska. Then around the middle eighties they all disappeared and now they are somewhat of a rarity. In December of '06 I logged KAOI and two nights ago KUMU and that has been it since those days. Same was true back then for Australians and New Zealanders, which I no longer hear. Re: [IRCA] New Hawaiian heard
Dennis, Pat and Nigel: Thanks for the kudos. That one was easy. There are plenty more on my unheard list that I'm sure will not be as easy. My beverage works very well but Hawaii from here is not exactly in line with it. For next season I'm planning a BOG of the same length aimed at HI, so theoretically, I should do better. [IRCA] New Hawaiian heard
Hi Everyone: Yesterday afternoon I was going thru my list of unlogged Hawaiian stations and noticed KUMU-1500 was amongst them. Normally KSTP dominates here with a very loud signal, but as the St Paul/Minneapolis sunrise is much earlier than here this time of year, I thought I might have a chance at logging them. So for an over night session I set my timer/radio on 1500 and crossed my fingers. Naturally the first 8 TOH IDs were all from KSTP. At 06:00 and 07:00MST there was someone under KSTP, but I know not who. At 08:00 (10:00EST) I heard the following ID "something unintelligible followed by 1500 KUMU Honolulu." The ID was heard again at 09:00, though not as clearly. This is only my second new Hawaiian station logged in the last 22 years. If only they were all as easy as this one had been. [IRCA] UK Pirates
Hi Everyone: There was an interesting piece on the BBC news website this morning about pirate radio in the UK. I've always known pirate radio existed there as I have heard them, from the UK unfortunately, but I never realised there were so many. According to this article, as many as 150 are operating at any given time. Go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7920067.stm for all the details. Re: [IRCA] HDTV Converter Box Hash
- Original Message - From: Does anyone know if newer HDTV sets, which don't need the converter box, also give off a lot of noise, via either direct radiation and/or up the power lines? Kevin: I have a Pioneer plasma HDTV receiver and it does put out a lot of noise. As I never use the digital tuner I can't say if it's coming from that part of the receiver. I'm the only one here that uses it, and never when I'm DXing, so the noise is not a problem for me. [IRCA] New Alaskan heard
Hi Everyone: Been sitting on 870 past few nights and last night at 23:00MST I heard the station I was after ID. A very young sounding female voice said "You're listening to KSKO Radio in McGrath, 870 AM. My first new Alaskan of the season. Unfortunately I was unable to ID it on my own so, once again I asked Paul Walker for help, which he did quite willingly. Thankyou Paul. That was my second new one on 870 as 2 days ago I heard a TOH ID for 870-KPRM-Park Rapids, MN. This one I managed figure out on my own, though it took a while. This was heard at 21:00MST. Re: [IRCA] More TA action?
From: "Nigel Pimblett" Dare we hope for a third night of TAs? Farda on 1575 is starting to poke through with audio, and it's only 3 pm local, two hours before sunset. Quite a number of carriers too, mainly on the upper end of the dial at the moment.1539 and 1503 are about the strongest. I hope it's better than last night Nigel. Up here it was worse than the previous one. I had faint audio on 1134 just before local sunset and a faint hets on 1215 and 1575. Less than hour later nothing on MW. LW had faint audio on 153, 162, 171 and 189 and they never improved. Re: [IRCA] Start of another good TA day
From: "Nigel" I think Don was sucking in all the TA signals in Alberta Mike, as I certainly didn't have a fabulous TA night either. I've had two or three better ones this season. I don't think it was just Don. I think all those guys on the left coast were hogging them too. Good TA openings just don't make it here anymore. 3 or 4 winters back an opening like that would have produced audio on most MW splits and all LW frequencies up here. As Pat is so fond of saying, "The good old days." Re: [IRCA] Start of another good TA day
From: "Don Moman VE6JY" Activity on 1584 1575 1566 1557 1549 1539 1521 1512 1503 1494 1449 1413 1377 1305 1287 1134, perhaps others but these were the bigger, obvious carriers noted 1700-1715 ut Don, your location is only 300 miles south of mine, yet you heard much more than I did, or even have this season. Last night all I had up here on MW was 2 very faint carriers on 1134 and 1215. LW was better with audio on 153, 162, 171, 180, 183, 189, 198 and 225. However, all was not lost as 171 was Morocco and new for here. For those out there that can't make a regenerative receiver, there are always several available on eBay. Some are quite expensive, some are not. Not as much fun as making your own I agree, but as Deane points out, gathering all the required parts is the hardest part.
