I can build a patched plasma.
The main problem is that the memory leak in plasma (see Bug 424636) is so bad
that I simply cannot test it without it OOM my machine :/

I'll try and delete all CPU monitors (keeping disk, memory and network
monitors) and see if it helps.

[plasmashell] [Bug 424636] New: System monitors leak memory, to a tune of 1GB (!) per 24 hours.

2020-07-24 Thread Gilboa Davara
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=424636

Bug ID: 424636
Summary: System monitors leak memory, to a tune of 1GB (!) per
24 hours.
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 5.19.3
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: System Monitor
  Assignee: notm...@gmail.com
  Reporter: gilb...@gmail.com
CC: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
Just upgrade two of my Fedora KDE boxes to 5.19.x and I'm noticing huge memory
leak from plasmashell.
I'm putting the blame on the system monitors, as removing them all seems to
solve the problem.
I literally have to reset plasmashell (kquitapp plsamshell && plasmashell &) as
it eats ~30GB of RAM. (Both machine have 32GB RAM).
Reverting back to 5.18 solves the problem.

OBSERVED RESULT
Memory usage (Please note that the session is completely idle and locked;
numbers take via ssh)

Please note that *all* individual core CPU monitors on all activities (total of
5) turned into network monitors.
I've deleted the broken widgets and added new ones, just to have them too,
revert to network monitor widgets after a couple of days.

SUMMARY
I've added multiple individual CPU core monitors widgets (See #424379), one per
activity.
After ~24 hours, all monitored turned into network.
Only means to revert them back to CPU core monitors is to delete them and add
new ones.
Screenshots attached.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Add multiple individual core system monitors on a machine w/ multiple
activities and large number of cores (20+HT in my case).
2. Wait...

Individual core CPU usage monitor.

SUMMARY
Running latest plasma (5.19.3) on Fedora 32 OS running on a dual Xeon (2 x 10
cores w/ HT) workstation.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Add individual core system monitor widget.
2. Switch to line mode.

OBSERVED RESULT
See attached screen shot.
1. Default CPU core order is more-or-less random.
2. Spacing between the CPU label and the core ID is not identical.
3. Spacing between the CPU ID and the core usage is random.

EXPECTED RESULT
1. Default CPU cores sort order should be numerical and not alpha-numerical
(core 30 should follow core core 29. and not core 3).
2. Core ID should be placed closer to the "CPU" label.
3. CPU usage value should be spaced further from the CPU_$ID, preferably with
some thin line connecting the two.
E.g.
 CPU01 35%
 CPU02 09%
...
 CPU29 35%
 CPU30 30%
 CPU31 10%

I can confirm that indeed changing the desktop theme to "breeze" or "breeze
dark" in the main theme applet and recreating the different customizations
solves the problem.
