[lace] another bobbin maker
Fran (Bloomer?) makes lovely bobbins and other wood tools. I love her Danish ones, many have bowling ball material for the ball of the bobbin. She's used bowling ball for tatting shuttles, too. She sometimes comes to IOLI convention, but often just sends her things with Kathy Kirchner. Robin Robin P. Yes, a very interesting thread as I am seeing names very new to me. Who remembers Harvey Helmke? Carolyn Gritzmaker? or Diane Miller? Harvey was the king of rings and his finish was silky smooth. He also made beautiful embroidery tools. Sadly he passed away about 10 years ago. Carolyn was very creative. She once carved a small, closed hand for the bobbin tail as a thank you for 'a helping hand'. Carolyn retired about 15 years ago. And Diane was another painter of delicate flowers. Diane moved from her cottage in the watercress fields and seems to have dropped out of sight. Re: [lace] Copyright etc.
We are all made to feel so guilty about this copyright issue that we dare not breathe without thinking of potential issues involved. Thank you, Brian, for applying some common sense to this topic! Similar to students who cannot afford the software that they need to learn to later make some money by using it (and buying it as soon as they can, of course!). I don't blame them for using some evaluation copies just to learn the tools. Especially in the small lace making world we should share as much as we can to keep this craft alive. I know of a pattern creator who doesn't even allows for the lace made from her patterns to be displayed! This is so ridiculous - you may make the lace but then have to hide it from the world's eyes ... - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. But surely, if you have legitimately paid for the pattern, the lace you make from it is your own copyright as it is now the actual *thing*, with your personal differences due to thread choice etc. I'm sure that when in the past we have had posts about the minutiae of copyright and lace patterns, if you sell (or even lend) a book you are technically supposed to destroy the patterns/photocopies you made from that book, as those are what is copyright, but the lace you made from those patterns is exempt because it is your interpretation of the pattern. Not quite sure how the display aspect versus copyright would come into play if you want to display it via photos of your lace on a website (with proper credits, of course) but I really don't see how you can be stopped from displaying it in the flesh, as it were. Why doesn't she want as many people as possible to see her designs anyway? And surely if it is shown made by people other than herself, that demonstrates it is a good workable pattern. And what would she do if you did display it? Surely not have a hissy-fit in public, or ban you from her classes? Re: [lace] Copyright etc.
Prime example of someone being a little over precious if you ask me. It has clearly lost her sales in two ways. Firstly people like you Achim who won't now buy her designs and all the people who may have seen worked samples and bought designs from her. If the patterns are that simple torchon, chances are the same 'design' could be created by someone else independently by coincidence. I think it's a shame when people get precious like this as it can put people off getting into a rewarding hobby and meeting people who are mostly wonderful, sharing, friendly and inspiring makers and designers. [lace] Bobbin makers and decorators
The last few days we have been chatting about the different makers and decorators of lace bobbins, this has been compiled into two lists and is definitely not to be considered the complete list as I am sure each of us can think of more to add to the list. Both the Bobbin Makers and the Bobbin Decorators files are small and in PDF format (can be opened and read with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader) and they can be found on my website here The list is sorted on the surname then the first name of the maker/decorator. The maker/decorator may be listed more than once if information about them was provided more than once. Well I didn't think that my innocent posting would result in such an avalanche of names. Alas, although I did make some bobbins for my youngest daughter from 3mm dowling using a Stanley knive, I wouldn't call myself a bobbin maker. Neither was Alan, his forte was to write on the social history of lacemakers, both in England and Ireland in the late C19th. My contribution has to do a little designing and write a few teaching booklets. May, I thank Jenny for compiling the list and I promise, one day to scan in some of the bobbins I have as examples. Yes, Jenny, I think it would be a very informative tool for our inventories! My daughters have asked me to do an inventory of my lace 'stuff' so they will know how to dispose of it at a later date. I am using the scanner and photos to do it. Now I need to get my books inventoried. Just a reminder this is also a good thing to do for insurance reasons, for this you also need the year you purchased the item. And hope we never need it for that purpose. We can add the late Mr. Le Grande, Vancouver BC, who turned many many bobbins of the same midlands style for sale to lacemakers in the BC Lace Clubs of the time - c. 1970 through 1990 maybe? Perhaps someone from the area could refine the information. I've forgotten his first name. The bobbins are distinctive in shape, multipurpose. I learned BL with some, then had my first lessons in Honiton with them, unspangled. (admittedly I soon found the real Honiton bobbins were much better). Re: [lace] bobbin turner - Canada
Hi All, One more from Canada. Sid Rose from Edmonton, AB, turned bobbins, not as finely finished as some others but good, useable bobbins. I used to send him the bobbin blanks of various woods and he would turn them in the style I requested and send them back. One time I sent him some slightly thinner cocobolo blanks and he sent them back with a note mentioning how stressful it had been to turn these ones as he was afraid of breaking the bobbins. I felt quite badly as I hadn't realized that the small difference in the size of blanks would cause so much grief, and I really treasure those ones. He retired several years ago. I think his wife would paint some of his continental bobbins and send them to Belgium? to a supplier every year. Maybe someone else knows the details about that. Re: [lace] bobbin makers
Hi All, I have been rootling through some of my favourite bobbins, and I have several on one of my current pillows made by Pauline Denmark's husband - they are so lovely, most of the ones I have are spliced with different colours (and what a job it was to find *just* the right beads to spangle them!) and are so slender and good to handle - and to look at! I am also hard-pushed not to spend the enture housekeeping (and more ...) on Malcolm Fowler's wonderful, slender glass bobbins. He fills them and decorates them with the most exquisite beads, lace, etc., and even made me some with my grand children's baby hair in, as well as an extra special, fatter pair with some baby teeth inside. Not to everyone's taste, those latter, but I love them! They are made of Pyrex glass, I think, so are also very hardwearing. I bought lots of Mr. Le Grande's bobbins when I first started they were quite inexpensive as well as being quite big. I wanted some smaller ones, so I asked him if he could turn me some smaller ones. In due course 6 pairs arrived the bottom more like a Honiton bobbin - quite pointed, but not drilled for spangles. He wrote that they had all been made out of one piece of lignum vitae. The colour ranges from black to pale yellow, some are multi-coloured. I started to drill holes using a little drill bit in a pin-vice (I didn't have a drill that would hold the tiny bits in those days). Boy, is that wood hard!! I later learned that it is supposedly one of the few woods that is so heavy/dense that it won't float. I can attest to its hardness. I believe that Mr. Le Grande's wife was one of the founding members of a BC lace group and only died within the last few years. Hi Arachnids I am surprised that any pattern designer who is so protective of her patterns that she will not allow lacemakers to show others lace they have made on her patterns even contemplates passing on her patterns, let alone publishes them. I think we all pass on the occasional pattern and one request I have is that you always write the source of the pattern on it when you pass it on, then if the person receiving the pattern enjoys making the lace she may purchase the book at some time. My real problem is when someone copies one of my patterns and sells it, and I know that at least one of my patterns was pirated by a supplier. [lace] Copyright etc.
I was pleasantly surprised at the recent IOLI convention at Portland, that in the lesson I had with Elena Dickson, she was quite happy for us to photocopy pages from her books, if it was for ourselves, so that we could just take the necessary pages out with us, and not lug the whole book around. In fact I think she said she does that, herself, and suggested it was a good way to go if taking the Knotted lace out and about with us. We discussed the difficulty of getting the books to lie flat in a Photocopier, when they are the soft cover books! A Common Sense Aussie!! :) Seriously, I think we have to be aware of copyright, but not go overboard and get too tied in knots with it.
