Re: Disabling the Suhosin patch by default in Debian Wheezy (Debian Testing)
Well, as a new member on the Debian PHP team I could say that maintaining the patch took a lot of time. Each reported PHP problem was needed to understand whether it's because of the patch or not. Also, the upstream for the patch isn't very nice/cooperative so we decided to skip it. Another issue is having future versions support, as (AFAIK) there's not PHP 5.4 version of the patch, which is a problem as we we work towards uploading it as soon as it becomes an official version. Kiwix project is looking for help
Hi, I'm publishing this mail on behalf of the wikimedia foundation which tries to find people who are interested in joining the Kiwix project: Kiwix is an open-source, cross-platform, free software offline reader for Wikipedia and other collections of Web pages and related images. Kiwix is always looking for new developers. We mainly need people with skills in C++ and with the GNU compilation tools. Kiwix is also based on Web technologies as, for example, javascript or CSS, so a good Internet/Web understanding is also essential. The code base is not really complicated. Kiwix uses the best existing software libraries in different domains as fulltext search, unicode transformation or template rendering. We think this is pretty easy to dive in the code. Currently we are working on the 0.9 release and most of the work is already done, but there is still a lot to do for the 1.0 release. This will provide an internal content download manager. The solution will use the best of P2P technologies, so, if you are interested in mirroring strategy, Metalink, Bittorent, magnet, etc., contact us at http://www.kiwix.org p.s. Most manufactures just add a small paper with the list of software and their license or refer the users to a page in their website. When ever you distribute GPL code you are obligated to give the user an option to get the source. Did you get any kind of source or offer for the source as the licenses require? Kaplan 2011/2/17 Amichai Rotman amic...@iglu.org.il Hi all, Just wanted to share my experience with this little device... As some of you know, I asked which one should I buy: Amazon Kindle or this one. I am glad I have bought this one. It's all I need! I have 130 books on the internal 1.2GB memory and I still have lots of space. I bought it so I can carry around all those 1000+ pages technical books. Pros: Runs Linux! Small size. Light weight. Lots of space (can work with an MicroSD card, up to 32GB). Supports Hebrew (none of the other readers out there do). Long battery life. Cons: e-vrit eshop: Very uncomfortable to browse the e-vrit website and shop for books (Both from the desktop and from the device). While browsing from the device, it opens a page on the local FS that asks you to follow a link to enter the online shop. This page comes up after connecting to the WiFi network, so they could easily take you there directly after the connection was made... You cannot search for books by author, and if you find an author you like, it is not possible to click the name to access all the books available by that author. This is true for both the device and the desktop sites. Note: The site accessible from the device is maintained by Newpan and the site accessible from the desktop is maintained by Steimazky A small number of books are available on the shop. No Sci-Fi books at all. No old books (those books I bought as a kid and are out of print are great candidates for this format). When listening to MP3 files - even with the volume all the way up, it was too low to hear in a noisy environment. Granted - I only tested Podcasts, not music. Slow response while switching between books and display modes (full screen, back to the main menu). flipping pages work fast, though. Terrible for photos / pictures. Too dark, no colors and slow. The books' covers and in-book diagrams and line art look great! User Experience: As I mentioned, I am very happy with the device. It is very light and under the right lighting conditions it is very clear and fun to read from. Using it under the sun was even better than under florescent light. I downloaded a sample book from the Barns Noble site (what they call a 'NookBook) and transfered it to the device directly (an .epub file) - and begun reading immediately! no DRM, no conversion - out of the download! I called their Customer Support (voice - I needed to hear it) and asked if it is because it's a sample. the representative said the sample is technically the same as the full book! Over the course of the last three years I've read very few books, mostly technical books by the computer, but since I've bought this device I have read more than 70 pages of a Hebrew thriller, and a few pages of some technical books and got the epub version of a 1500 page book I was wondering how to carry around with me... Conclusion: Very good buy for those of you who need the Hebrew support. Not very expensive. No dual display. No color display - but perfect for reading books! I hope I helped someone out there to reach a decision... Re: Hebrew spell-checking in OpenOffice
2010/11/2 Nadav Har'El n...@math.technion.ac.il Recently I noticed that (thanks to Lior Kaplan, it seems) it is now trivial to get Hebrew spellchecking (based on Hspell 1.1) in OpenOffice. The Hebrew localized version (now available on the official OpenOffice site!) comes with Hebrew spell-checking pre-bundled, and there's an extension [1] for those who use the English version of open-office. My pleasure (: It's available only as the 3.3 RC releases, and will be available on the final release. http://download.openoffice.org/all_rc.html The first issue is acronyms (rashei tevot) and abbreviations. In Hebrew, these use the geresh and gershaim (or single or double quotes), which is part of the word. OpenOffice does not understand that these quotes are part of the Hebrew word, and splits the word on them. As a result all acronyms are marked as spelling mistakes. This is really annoying, especially for certain types of documents where acronyms are common. Known issue, and reported at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=99796 It is marked for work during the 3.4 release. The second issue is the correction suggestions for spelling errors. All the suggestions indeed appear to be valid words, but their order is terrible - it appears little or no attention was paid to trying to provide the most likely suggestions first. The screenshot on the extension page [1] provides an excellent example: When given the mis-spelling עיברי, rather than provide the most likely suggestion first - עברי, it is given as the 8th suggestion, and the first suggestions are highly unlikely. [..] I believe that hunspell's dictionary in fact has a way to give such correction rules, but I don't know how to correctly write them, or how to make OpenOffice use them. The word list in the extension is created with myspell's format. Hunspell should be similar but I couldn't build that format at the time. Re: Free software service providers
You're right about the comments/review part, but its out of our scope (at the time being). The goal of the list is to expose the fact that there is an business community around free software that can give services. When talking with large organizations or governmental entities the question about who can support us often comes up. The answer can't be ask for volunteers and should be just choose a service provider. Having a list of such providers will help not only giving the correct answer, but also showing the way. Don't forget that some people still need to see others adopt free software before doing that themselves. Kaplan p.s.
