[MBZ] Old v new 140

2016-03-23 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Poos keeps saying to avoid the pre 96 140 because they had too many problems. I
say poos is wrong. The main 2 problems are engine wiring harness and
evaporator. Both of which has most likely already been replaced. The post
facelift models have the 5 speed electronic transmission and a better ignition
system. They are also cheapened out compared to the earlier 140s. They do have
a few more gadgets but the build quality is not as good. The older engines do
have more power but will get slightly less mileage. Some of the neat 140
features were eliminated in the later cars such as power center mirror and the
backup antennas. The older version 140 just seems much more elegant and more
stout to me.

Re: [MBZ] Low Ball Larry

2016-03-23 Thread clay via Mercedes
I may have shot myself in the foot with the all the photos, but pix lie. I
have looked at cars in the field that looked great online, but were junk in
person. If I had half a mind, I would buy junk cars, detail them, then turn
around and sell them to the lowball larry types. But the sale would fail,
because once they see the car, they would try to bargain. Wasting my time.

Maybe I just change my perspective and tell them I am only able to discuss
price in person after the car has been inspected.

It is a bit rude to make low ball offers one a first contact by email.  At

the engine. I think the yard will haul it out on
a pickup truck for you. No way you can get it
out on a wheelbarrow. Hiring a yard rat for a
few bucks would be a good investment.

I was at the pick a part today and came across a
car I used to own. This is a prime example of
stupidity. So I sold this to a friend of mine
who drove it for a while then he sold it to a
coworker of his a while back. This is a 96 e300
diesel. A couple of months ago my friend said
she was wanting to get rid of it. Anyway it
turned up at the junk yard. It had auction
stickers on it as well as a dealer stock tag,
which turned out to be one of my customers. If I
had noticed it in their inventory I could have
picked it up cheap. So this was a perfectly good
car, she traded it in and the dealer sent it to
auction. LKQ bought it there. So apparently they
buy perfectly fine running cars at the auction
to part out. Sad. The car appears to have just
arrived and only had the condenser removed. I
spend a couple of hours there stripping off
anything of value. I ended up spending about
$200 which was probably $800 or more worth of
parts on eBay. Here is my question, has anybody
pulled an engine fore at one of these places?
Knowing the car I really want to go back for the
engine before somebody starts hacking away at
it. I see they have a frames out there but I am
unsure about pulling one on site. If just
hacking lines and cables should come out pretty
quick I guess, just worried about the logistics
of actually doing the pulling and getting it out
of there.

I've pulled a couple engines @ Pull-A-Part. They will let you use an A
Frame to do the extraction then will move it to your
your vehicle with a fork lift. Don't know how LKQ does it never pulled
an engine from one of their yards.

Best bet is to ask them.

Re: [MBZ] Low Ball Larry

2016-03-23 Thread clay via Mercedes
Not my car. I am just fronting for the shop that needs to break even. The
quality of the car is high enough that being able to hit that mark is
reasonable. No crack. I have driven the car and keep an eye on the market,
pester sellers, so I know the pulse of the local market. I discount the
desired values club members feel their cars are worth. Sale price does depend
upon what buyers will pay. I do not have to take the first low ball offer from
a guy who has never seen the car. Nor the subsequent low ball offers.

It is a bit rude to make low ball offers one a first contact by email. At
least they could look at the car. That would show greater interest than a
blind email response to a listing.

Most of the low ballers probably have a reasonable idea of what it is
worth and what they are prepared to pay. They are often smarter than
they look. You have the option of declining and are entitled to do so.
They are likely not all that surprised when you do, but they feel they
have nothing to lose and the odds are good that they can buy for less
than what they think it is worth so they can flip it. Stating higher is
not going to work with anyone who has done a bit of homework.

There was one similar, can't remember what year, at the local mech shop
a few years back. I think it had a bad head, something, the owner (a
Kiawhite) apparently just walked away from it. I tried to get it for
$700, he wanted $1100 or $1200 and wouldn't budge. It finally
disappeared after sitting for a year or two. It was a very nice car,
clean, except for that problem. I think we discussed it, sourcing a
head would not have been a big issue, would have been a nice car but I

However, sellers will very often take a whole lot less than the asking
price.
My son works with a fellow who has purchased a couple of vehicles in the
past year in that manner.
He calls the seller up and offers a fraction of the asking price and
buys the vehicle.
A lot of people really don't want the hassle of selling and if they
don't get an immediate offer of what they asked, will take the first
offer they get.

I also had a client a few years back who was sort of a backyard used car
dealer. He had a licence etc but no real store front shop. He would go
around on weekends with a pocket full of cash and buy cars from private
sellers. He never paid more than about half of what the asking price
was. He would often just suggest to the seller that they were unlikely
to get any better offers and advise he was prepared to pay cash
immediately and would get the vehicle for his price.
Sellers have often replaced the car already and don't have sufficient
parking and do not wish to continue to pay licence and insurance etc.

2016-03-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Sorry. I just know about them as some of the W140 people mentioned them.

The duo valve on Tommy's former S420 doesn't want to work, which down here
isn't an issue with very few exceptions. I've got a spare but the motor is
noisy, so I'm not going to swap it.

I suspect the valves are shot on it but I'm not that interested in fixing it at
his point.
