Lights stay bright = Electrical problem before the starter windings. Lights go very dim = Bad Connection, Starter is cooked, MOTOR IS SEIZED. Or weak battery Look before you jump... [MBZ] Manually engaging starter on W116 300SD
I'm looking at a car in Atlanta that one day just decided it didn't want to start. When the key is turned nothing happens, no noises, etc. The owner tried starting it in neutral, and has cranked the engine over by hand. What do you guys think is the problem? If I could make arrangements for a trailer I wouldn't be asking this, but I can't find someone with a truck that can pull a car trailer. I'm willing to take a chance that I can start it by either pull starting it or manually 'jumping' the starter. I know that there is a way to engage the starter by fiddling under the hood, but I'm not sure what needs to be done. I believe it involves the terminal block underneath the battery (on the W116 at least). Do I just need to apply 12V to the solenoid on the starter? How much current does it need to handle (ie, how big of a wire)? Is there a place on the rear of my W124 where I can safely attach a tow strap? Just for pull starting of course! Thanks! Re: [MBZ] Manually engaging starter on W116 300SD
Find out what's wrong -- if the starter is locked up, jumpering it won't help! You short between the small wire and battery connection on the solenoid. Not too bad on a NA 61x, but hard to reach on the turbo models and impossible on a 60x. the starter it buried. You can jump it at the wire terminals over on the passenger side on a W123, but I've never done it. You have a tow hook on the rear somewhere on the W124. Peter Frederick wrote: Find out what's wrong -- if the starter is locked up, jumpering it won't help! I don't think the guy is willing to diagnose it much. If the starter was locked up, when going to start the car any lights that are on would dim correct? If it is an electrical problem elsewhere nothing would happen? That should be a pretty quick and straightforward test. You short between the small wire and battery connection on the solenoid. Good info :) I might be able to look at my SD and see if I can't rig something for that terminal block (I think its under the battery). You have a tow hook on the rear somewhere on the W124. Hooray! :) I was really not looking forward to driving my pickup (waaay to small to tow a car) for 10 hours in a day. Much more comfy and cheaper to take the 2.5T Thanks for the info! Peter said You can jump it at the wire terminals over on the passenger side on a W123, but I've never done it. When I had my 300TD and before that the 240D, I hard wired in a remote start switch to those wire terminals. Worked like a champ. On diesels you can jump-start from the GP relay control connector. Jumper pins 1 or 2 to the fuse screw, whichever one it is that does it.
