Re: [meteorite-list] old woman meteorite

2006-01-03 Thread MexicoDoug

Adam and the anonymous commentator: Actually, it is a very good scientific
question. The person who asked was obviously thinking about sedimentary
layers in the mountains or their favorite geology text, or maybe the discovery

channel.

I'd rephrase the answer to be:
Shale in geology is the fragmentary-type sedimentary layer that splits in a
planar manner usually has high silicate content from the clays it formed
originally from (with the help of sea creatures). Clays, very frequently
absorb
water in sheet like macromolecules with high silicates so you can see where
the planar shale splitting derives from...You can have a sedimentary shale
high in Calcium (calcium carbonate) from skeletons and shells typically in
ancient water sites. Coals are also shales (remember the "strip" miners - an
illusion to this planar like splitting), when the same types of materials get
carbonaceous.

In the case of the iron meteorite, or for that matter, an old buried Colt 45
or horseshoe, the iron rusts in a manner that is layered, and splits off in
a planar mannerVoila - it can also be called shale for this planar
splitting characteristic. Just like an onion rind, not to be confused with
the
onion rind model of asteroids!

Saludos, Doug
(Hoping to bring my iron pick to a far far away eucrite shale sometime and
look for nice "diogenite crystals"!)

Answer:
It is converted to iron shale when it becomes weathered or terrestrialized
(oxidized). This is a well-known
occurrence as far as iron meteorites go. Canyon Diablo can be found as both
iron shale and in elemental iron form depending on the degree of weathering.

[meteorite-list] Old Woman Meteorite

2006-01-03 Thread CalSouth1
Dear List,

I could be wrong, and invite opposing views, yet, a silicon result from an
Iron body would be stretching the subject.

Because of the fight between the discoverer's and the U.S. Government, over
the proprietorship the only owner now is the U. S. Government and it will not
be parceling out pieces for salenor will any silicon based minerals be
accepted as part of the main mass.

Just my humble and somewhat ignorant opinion.

Re: [meteorite-list] Pasamonte stone! & FILMS

2006-01-03 Thread Walter Branch

Hi Jeff and List,

Jeff, thanks very much for making these movies available for list (and non
list) members. Your video archives and Mark's text archives complement each
other very nicely.

I witnessed my first fireball a few days ago, on 12/22/05. I left work
early that day because I was sick. I was driving home about 4:00 p.m. It
was very sunny with only a few clouds. I happend to be approaching a bridge
over a river and about a mile of marshland and I saw it traveling from
roughly east to west, at a very steep angle. It was breaking up and
disentegrating and looked a lot like the peekskill videos on Jeff's site.
This was in broad daylight! It was amazing. After years of night-time
astronomical observations, during which I have seen many sporadic
meteorites, this was amazing. The illusion of closeness was very real. It
seemed as though I could have driven over the bridge and into the marsh
(with subsequent explanations to my wife) and there a meteorite would be -
right in the middle of the marsh!

I will never forget it. I hope to see one again.

2006-01-03 Thread dfreeman

Dear Adam, List;
I have repeatedly found lots of cretaceous shale balls that have
oxidized so much that a good magnet does nothing to them. Even the
metal detector doesn't recognize them.but, they are in odd
locations, and seem to have been replaced by manganese, or manganese
staining. Tim Heinz' site on meteorwrongs has a picture or two. I still
remain puzzled but have been too cheap to send them off for an irridium
test.

Fw: [meteorite-list] I have lost ALL emails.

2006-01-03 Thread Dave Carothers
Mike,

On the off chance that you inadvertantly corrupted the Outlook .pst file,
You can also try this: Run the Inbox Repair Tool, SCANPST.exe, to recover
the file. On Win2K and WinNT systems, the executable is located in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT. You can also find it on
the Office 2000 CD-ROM in Drive:\Pfiles\Common\System\Mapi\1033\NT. In
WinXP, the file is located in C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\Mapi\1033. For additional information on the Inbox Repair Tool,
see Microsoft Knowledge Base article

Fw: [meteorite-list] I have lost ALL emails.

2006-01-03 Thread Dave Carothers
Mike,

This is for recovering email that has been accidently dragged and dropped
into the top level folder where it is lost from view. The top level folder
is called in:
- Outlook 97 - 'Mailbox (your, name)' folder.
- Outlook 2000 - 'Outlook Today - [Mailbox - (your, name)]' folder.
- Outlook XP 2002 - 'Outlook Today - [Mailbox - (your, name)]' folder.

If you think you might of lost email this way, you can recover it by doing
the following:

Outlook 97

Its easy. From the main Outlook screen:
1. ensure that 'folder list' is showing: click 'View' menu then 'Folder
list' to switch it on or off.
2. click on the 'Mailbox - (your.name)' folder - see any lost mail.
3. drag it back into your 'Inbox' folder.

Outlook 2000

Its relatively easy:
1. ensure that 'folder list' is showing: click 'View' menu then 'Folder
list' to switch it on or off.
2. click on the 'Outlook Today - [Mailbox (your.name)]' folder.
3. click on the 'View' menu then the 'Show Folder Home Page' option - see
missing files (if any).
4. drag it back into your 'Inbox' folder.

Outlook XP 2002

It can be done in the web version of Outlook:
1. start Internet Explorer or other web browser.
2. into the address line type:
exchange.lancs.ac.uk/exchange
3. when asked for your user name type: lancs\(your Windows username)
then below enter your usual password.
4. click OK - see the 'Outlook Web Access' client.
5. click on 'Surname, name' folder at the top left - see your missing files.
6. drag it back into your 'Inbox' folder.

Hope this helps,

Dave

[meteorite-list] Stardust Nears End of Epic Journey; Researchers Await Its Treasure

2006-01-03 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.uwnews.org/article.asp?articleID=21550

Office of News and Information
University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

CONTACT:
Vince Stricherz, 206-543-2580

Jan. 3, 2006

Stardust nears end of epic journey; researchers await its treasure

Donald Brownlee's heart skipped a beat six years ago when the launch of
the Stardust spacecraft didn't happen as planned. The University of
Washington astronomy professor has experienced many other tense times
since the historic mission blasted off a day late, and its return to Earth
on Jan. 15 will be just one more white-knuckle moment.

Just before 3 a.m. MST [1000 UTC], the spacecraft will jettison its return
capsule, which will plunge into Earth's atmosphere at nearly 29,000 miles
per hour, the greatest return speed ever recorded. A few moments later,
after the capsule slows to just faster than the speed of sound, a
parachute will apply the brakes and Stardust will settle to the ground on
the Air Force's Utah Testing and Training Range southwest of Salt Lake
City.

"There's a lot at stake. You just hope everything works, and I am
confident it will work," said Brownlee, the mission's principal
investigator, or lead scientist.

The return capsule contains tiny bits of dust captured two years ago as it
spewed from a comet called Wild 2. The tennis-racquet-shaped collector
used a remarkably light and porous material called aerogel to capture the
particles, each much smaller than a grain of sand and traveling six times
the speed of a bullet fired from a rifle. Earlier, the reverse side of the
collector snared interstellar dust grains flowing into the solar system
from other stars in our galaxy. In all, the capsule contains tens of
thousands of comet grains and about 100 bits of interstellar dust.

"It's really quite an epic thing. I think it tends to get overlooked
because it's just a little mission, and there aren't any people on board,"
Brownlee said. "But the really big part of the research is just getting
ready to start, when the material goes to the laboratory. The train is
headed for the station and we're all waiting for it."

Stardust is part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's
series of Discovery missions and is managed by the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Besides the UW, other collaborators are
Lockheed Martin Space Systems; The Boeing Co.; Germany's Max-Planck
Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics; NASA's Ames Research Center; and
the University of Chicago.

After the capsule touches down in the Utah desert, a canister bearing the
aerogel collector grid will be removed and taken to the Johnson Space
Center in Houston, where the samples will be cataloged and sent to
scientists around the world. Brownlee expects them to provide key
information on the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago and
possibly to shed light on the origins of life on Earth. Scientists are
likely to study Stardust's treasure for decades to come.

Stardust was launched on Feb. 7, 1999, and set off on three giant loops
around the sun. It began collecting interstellar dust in 2000 and met Wild
2 (pronounced Vilt 2) on Jan. 2, 2004, when the spacecraft weathered a
hailstorm of comet particles and snapped exceptional close-up photographs
of the comet's surface. During its 2.88 billion-mile voyage Stardust made
one pass by Earth to get a speed boost from the planet's gravity, and
later staged a dress-rehearsal for the comet encounter when it maneuvered
very close to Asteroid 5535 Annefrank.

The tensest moment other than the comet encounter came in November 2000,
while the spacecraft was cruising along some 130 million miles from the
sun. A huge solar flare, 100,000 times more energetic than usual, engulfed
Stardust and its special digital cameras that help the spacecraft know
where it is by viewing the stars and making comparisons with a
comprehensive star chart stored in the onboard computer. The high-energy
solar flare electrified pixels in the cameras, producing dots that the
computer interpreted as stars. Suddenly the spacecraft did not know where
it was and, in a preprogrammed act of self-preservation, it turned its
solar panels toward the sun, losing communication with Earth.

Ground controllers finally found a faint signal and were able to contact
Stardust and correct the problem. A little more than three years later the
spacecraft finally met the target that scientists had been aiming for
since 1974, when a close encounter with Jupiter altered Wild 2's orbit and
brought it to the inner solar system. That made the mission feasible.

Scientists have collected thousands of meteorites and cosmic dust
particles on Earth, Brownlee noted, but with few exceptions the origin of
those materials is unknown. Now there will be samples of material from
another known body in space, and those grains can be compared with all the
previously collected meteorites and bits of dust to see if t

[meteorite-list] Ad - Serious Bargains - 80 Auctions Ending!

2006-01-03 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

I have numerous excellent auctions ending this afternoon, most still
seriously bargain priced at just 99 cents. Check out some of the super
prices below or click on the first link to see them all:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZraremeteorites

Largest piece of New Orleans offered on ebay started at just 99 cents. I
have less than 6 grams left in stock and when it is gone I doubt I will be
able to replace it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6592078400

Extraordinary looking chondrite priced to sell:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6592134043

Official NWA 3133 Metachondrite still just 99 cents. Detailed studies by
German scientists have found significant differences in Tungsten and other
metal isotopes indicating that NWA 1839 and other meteorites once assumed to
be paired to this stone are not. Here is your chance to get a piece of the
real McCoy that started the Metachondrite series and resulted in a major
overhaul of how we think about meteorites and there parent bodies, expect to
read a lot more about this most important meteorite:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6592168147

Bargain priced Ureilite, Giant 54.6 gram chunk at less than $10.00 a gram:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6592175625

Gorgeous dual lithology Lunaite slice at the lowest possible price, I almost
out of the larger pieces like this fine example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6592190718

I still have 2 introductory priced pieces of the "Unique Angrite NWA 2999:
The Case For Samples From Mercury" listed below. 8 of the 10 specimens have
already been sold so you may want to take advantage of these bargain priced
pieces. You will not find a better price per gram on any Angrites listed
anywhere and these specimens have proper provenance. These are the real NWA
2999, not some trumped up copy with a faked pedigree. Each and every one of
these samples comes from the original 2999 batch in which every single one
of the 12 stones was tested by a NomCom approved laboratory:

RE: [meteorite-list] Paint Could Alter Asteroids Course

2006-01-03 Thread Kevin Forbes
The mind half boggles, how about the effect of volatiles evaporating from
the paint? e.g. land a lump of material that begins to vapourise when
illuminated by the Sun. Paint and thinners, the vapour from the material
will at first possibly provide more thrust than the variation between light
dark bits...
I also am thinking, if the material was of a high gloss, it would work
better than , say, a powdery coating, such as talcum powder.

Kevin, VK3UKF.

Paint could alter asteroids course
The Scotsman (United Kingdom)
December 31, 2005

Scientists have spoken of their plans for a project to stop asteroids
hitting the earth.

Researchers from Glasgow University are looking into the possibility of
spraying lumps of rock and ice with paint to knock them off course.

Spraying the asteroids using a robot droid in space would heat or cool
the surface using the sun's rays, hopefully diverting them from hitting
the planet.

It is thought this method would be much more effective than that
fictionally used by film star Bruce Willis in the blockbuster
Armageddon, where he and a team drilled a nuclear bomb into the core of
a massive rock.

Dr Gianmarco Radice, who is leading the research, told the Daily Record
newspaper: "With an asteroid you are faced with the danger posed by one
piece of rock.

"Blow it to pieces and you could be faced with the even bigger problem
of many more smaller pieces of rock hurtling towards the earth.

"Ours would be an unmanned mission. There would be no need for Bruce
Willis."

The £300,000 three-year study into asteroids at the university is being
backed by the Government's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council.

The main threat is currently a 390-metre wide asteroid called Apophis,
which Nasa believes could hit earth on April 13, 2036.

similar to the lingering trail of the Tagish Lake carbonaceous chondrite.

Mike, sincere congrats on the acquisition of this "drool-worthy" beauty!

RE: [meteorite-list] Cleaning Scale off Stonys

2006-01-03 Thread Kevin Forbes

Hi Pete and list, interesting read this one, just an untried thought after
years of cleaning ancient coins now and then, the caliche is a carbonate, I
am assuming, it should dissolve rapidly in HCl or Hydrochloric acid, dilute
to slow it. Also, I had success on certain coins removing bad stuff by
heating and quenching in water, SSS and it flaked off.

Cheers, Kevin.

Hello, List,

...so quiet in here...everyone still hung-over, eh?

A while ago I posted a request for any suggestions to make getting scale
off of stone meteorites any easier, without a response.

I tried a few things myself and I'll pass on the results for anyone who is
interested:

De-scalers like CLR or Limeaway are messy, smelly and potentially
dangerous, even in a diluted form down to 25% with distilled water - and it
changed the appearance of the surface somewhat.

A furnace humidifier "scale-be-gone" solution was the same disappointment.

Hydrogen Peroxide, however, was a definite help, and at the household 3%,
it's relatively safe.

I submerged the intended stone in the peroxide for about an hour, and while
keeping it wet I started cleaning.
It is still a meticulous task - I still needed to use the dental picks, but
the scale comes off a lot easier and in bigger chips, and doesn't appear to
harm the meteorite.

I soak the stones in alcohol when I'm done to displace the water.

I'll try 10% later, and if there's an marked advange I'll post the
results...unless someone else tries it first...

I suggest you wear disposable gloves, though, as the stuff will bleach your
fingertips.

Any input or further suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Pete

Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite-centric commercial

2006-01-03 Thread Larry Lebofsky
Darren:

I saw the ad (only once) seveal weeks ago). If anyone can get this recorded,
it would be greatly appreciated as I use such things for my class.

Larry

PS At least it wasn't vaporized on impact!
