RE: [nysbirds-l] Pine Island Missionlands Road, Warwick.NY
Video taping people can escalate matters. If you are on the road and not trespassing on private property, ignore the person without doing anything that may be infammatory. If it becomes dangerous, call the Police and take note of the vehicle plate and description. Pay attention to their clothing, weight, height, facial hair and hair color. Then leave and meet the Police at the end of the road. [nysbirds-l] Snow in June
This afternoon while returning home from Rhinebeck in Dutchess County, with my Wife and Daughter, I stopped at Hopeland Trails on Old Post Rd., Staatsburg, NY to check on the Chat reported by John Askildsen weeks ago. After about five minutes of listening, we were able to hear the bird calling from East of the parking lot. We continued south and crossed the Hudson into Ulster County. We then chose an odd path home by cutting through the property of the Shawangunk and Wallkill Correctional facilities, just to the East of the Shawangunk Grasslands. To our great surprise, at 7:45PM, we stumbled upon a VERY white SNOWY OWL on the prison grounds. My father, Ken McDermott was close by and was able to share in the sighting. Can't say I have ever had both species in the same day and have certainly never been wearing shorts before while looking at a Snowy Owl. You just never know!! RE: [nysbirds-l] more Caspian terns
Having heard of the Tern sightings at Kingston Point, I stopped in on my way south last night. I arrived at approx. 6:15PM and was able to immediately see 11 of the reported 13 Caspian Terns. Additionally, I had 10 Common Terns, of which 8 were mid river flying northward in a loose group and 2 Bonapartes Gulls. It was a nice end to the day. I believe that the Caspians and possibly 1 or 2 Commons spent the night. There were 13 at Kingston Point (Ulster County), 1 at New Baltimore (Greene Co.); 2 at Coeymans Landing (Albany County); 1 at Cohoes Flats (Albany/Saratoga Co.) and 1 at Collins Lake (Saratoga County). Also, two Black Terns were at Coeymans Landing, and 1 at Crescent ( Mohawk River - Albany Co.). And keeping with the tern theme: 12 Common Terns at Cohoes Flats as well. Re: [nysbirds-l] Caracara Reports? - Montgomery Co.
Hi All, In the past 45 min., I have checked both the Scott's Corners Golf Course as well as the original spot on River Road where the bird was first found. At this time I have not located the bird but will continue to check likely local locations. For those slightly north, Blue Chip Farm and the the surrounding area, would be an ideal spot for this bird. Re: [nysbirds-l] Caracara's left eye
He eye socket is indeed empty. Herb Houghton from NJ showed my a picture today where the empty socket was evident. Herb also states that he took a photo of the bird head on that shows the convex shape of the birds right eye and a concave area where the left eye should be. He has a photo web site and can be reached through it. Googling his name will get you there. Had a report of the bird being seen over the center of Walden, which is just east of the location where it was seen yesterday. [nysbirds-l] Gyr Falcon Update
As I have had many inquiries to as to parking at the "new location" for the bird, I thought I should update what I know (think). Approx. 5 minutes after my last post, that noted a "new location", the bird flew in a straight line toward the direction of Old Fort Rd. Although we were back in the area of Hoagerburgh and Old Fort Rd., within minutes, we never relocated the bird. I would suggest, that this was merely an expansion of the birds hunting area and perhaps just a place where it goes when we have been unable to locate it in the past. I would guess that the bird will continue with its previous habits and would offer the Bruyn Rd. location as an option to check only when unable to locate on Old Fort Rd. Of course, this is all conjecture as I can not read the birds mind. As to the parking questions regarding parking along Bruyn Tpk.there are NO parking options. Gyrfalcon new location. Having not has enough earlier today, Clara and I returned to see the Gyr again. It is currently on Bruyn Tpk., 1/2 mile east of the intersection of Hoagerburgh Rd. The bird is perched across the field directly across from 350 Bruyn Tpk. As a second reference point, there is a yellow excavator on the property to the left of the bird. When we first came upon it, it was feeding over a kill about 100yrds out in the field. NOTE: there is no shoulder on the side of the road!!! [nysbirds-l] Ulster County Gyr Falcon/ Town of Shawangunk
The previously posted Gyr Falcon was relocated today by Matt Zeitler, at approx. 3:05PM. Between that time and 5:00PM, approx. 40 Birders enjoyed long looks at this exquisite bird. The bird was initially found perched in a tall Pine Tree, West of Hoagerburgh Rd. and just South of Bates Lane. After flying off, the bird spent an extended time eating over a kill on Old Fort Rd. Old Fort Rd. is a dead end directly across Hoagerburgh Rd. from Bates Lane. The bird was eating inside the fenced in area on the south side of the road. For those familiar, there is usually a pond which is not visible at this time due to ice and snow cover. The bird then flew back to the original Pine but soon returned to Old Fort Rd. and perched atop a Telephone Pole. Some time after 5:00PM the bird flew directly North toward the Shawangunk Cliffs. For those trying tomorrow, please respect the locals. WE, the local birders, have had a good relationship with the residents of this area for Decades and this relationship should be continued after this bird leaves. Please do not encroach on their properties or on the bird. [nysbirds-l] Orange County Week Highlights
Today I birded the Newburgh Waterfront, from approx. 3:45 to 5PM. Gull number were good with the highlights being a first winter Glaucous Gull and 2 first winter Iceland Gulls. Two other county highlight from early in the week were found by Matt Zeitler. On Tuesday, 1/27, Matt had 6 Lapland Longspur on Missionland Rd. in Pine Island. On Saturday, 1/31, 4 Longspurs remained. On Thursday, 1/29, Matt located a Barn Owl flying on Oil City Rd. [nysbirds-l] Orange/Dutchess County Hudson River Gulls
On Tuesday 1/20, Dad (Ken McDermott) and I ventured to Beacon in Dutchess County, after finding that all flowing ice was on that side of the Hudson. We were rewarded with a single first year Iceland Gull, seen from the Long Dock area near the Beacon Train Station. On Wed. 1/21, the landscape (icescape) of the river had changed dramatically. The river was completely filled with flowing ice and contained an estimated 5,000-6,000 gulls. After sifting through only about 200 gulls, I had already found 2 first year Iceland Gulls, when an Eagle put up all the gulls. When they settled, I began to scan again, this time finding 2 first year Icelands within the first 500 or so gulls, whenyou guessed it, another eagle flyby. This time the gulls settled mid river, just beyond a good distance for ID's. Game called on account of darkness. Today, after 2 hours of scanning from the Newburgh side with Dad, Bruce Nott and Peter Schuyler, we had only produced a single first year Iceland. Anxious to check the Dutchess side, while people were watching on the Newburgh side, I headed to Beacon. At Long Dock, I was rewarded with 2 first year Icelands and a FOS Adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. Gulls numbers are continuing to increase. For anyone trying to figure out a day trip for this weekend, the conditions are looking promising. In a 5 minute scan of the Hudson from Newburgh this morning at 9:30, I had 16 Bald Eagles, from a single location, just north of Torches Restaurant. [nysbirds-l] Newburgh (Orange County) Hudson River Gulls
Just a quick update... Over the past month, Iceland Gulls have become a fairly regular event on the Hudson at Newburgh. The only exception to that rule occurred from roughly the 9th or so until last friday(1/16),when to my knowledge none were seen. Prior to that, we had at least 2 individual 1st year birds and a second year bird. This past Friday (1/16) I had an adult Iceland just south of the Gull Harbor Marina (Public Boat Launch) at the foot of Washington St. This evening, while out for a short time with my wife(Clara) and Father (Ken McDermott) I spotted a very dark mantled bird that I was unable to get a positive ID on due to fading light, distance and only being able to view the bird while it laid on the ice. The bird of interest appeared to be slightly smaller than neighboring Herring Gulls. The bird had a black ring around the bill with no obvious red mark on the lower mandible. The bird lacked the streaking on the head and nape, typically found on most winter plumage Lesser Black-backed and Slaty-backed Gulls. The bird appeared to show a slight dark smudge, concentrated around the eye. I was unable to get any color on the eye itself. Due to the fact that it was laying down, I was not able to get leg color. For no apparent reason, this gull and surrounding gulls lifted off and headed into Cornwall Bay, where they more than likely, are spending the night. At the time the gulls lifted off, I had briefly turned away from the bird. I never got a look at the bird in flight and after moving further south and scanning the area, never got on the gull again. Although I know it was not a Great Black-backed, I do not know what it was. I hope that local birders will keep an eye out for this bird. It's Ironic that sometimes the most interesting birds are the ones that aren't positively ID'd.. Good Birding, Curt McDermott PS. The Dutchess County side of the Hudson has fairly solid ice extending out approx. 200 meters/yards. Recently, that ice edge has held upwards of 3,000 gulls in the late afternoon. Free floating ice is beginning to appear on all parts of the river. This ice holds gulls as well. I recently heard a report that the river in Green County County is frozen all the way across. If these conditions continue, gull activity in Orange should be picking up soon. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Newburgh Iceland Gull (Orange County)
Another exciting Gull Season has begun on the Hudson River in Orange County. Annually, around this time, Gulls begin to congregate on the Hudson late in the afternoon, with numbers peaking just before dark. The current number of individuals is in the ballpark of 2500 birds. Historically this number will steadily increase until sometime mid-late January when the number will top out around 10,000 birds (Hi Corey). The ideal circumstances arise, when the river is 50-75% ice packed and when the Newburgh side is left open, although the Dutchess County folks would probably differ and like it more when the Newburgh side is ice packed and the Beacon Waterfront is open water. At that time, the birds congregate along the ice edge and ride loose ice up and down the flowing river, making for optimal viewing. Currently, there is no ice at Newburgh. With that many gulls, the potential is great for rarities. In previous years, we have seen increasing numbers of Lesser Black-backed(up to 3 at a time) and Iceland Gulls(up to 5 at a time). Glaucous Gulls are also seen on occasion and 3 years ago, a Slaty-backed Gull was found and photographed on the Beacon side of the river. Yesterday, while scanning from the Newburgh side, in an area just North of Washington Street, my father, Ken McDermott, found a beautiful first winter (pale juvenile) Iceland Gull. This was our first notable gull this winter but will certainly not the last. For those interested in checking this area, the entire Newburgh waterfront from Washington Street to Second Street is worth checking and offers multiple viewing opportunities. On the Beacon side, The Beacon Waterfront Park (In front of the Metro North Train Station) is the ideal spot. I have included a map of the Newburgh side for familiarization. [nysbirds-l] Dicksissel/ Orange County/ Oil City Rd/Winding Waters Trail
Rob Stone called to advise that he has located a Dicksissel at the Winding Waters Trail on Oil City Rd. Enter the trail and Proceed East along the Wallkill River. At the fork, bear right. Continue and the trail will turn 90 degrees to the right. After the turn, continue across the straightaway to the T Intersection and turn left. Continue along that straightaway and look for a marker constructed with sticks in a tree. The bird is being seen on both sides of the trail as I type. For those unfamiliar with Winding Waters Trail: Enter Oil City Rd (Wallkill NWR, Pine Island, NY) and pass the viewing platform on your left. Continue to where the road crosses the Wallkill River. [nysbirds-l] Mearns Bird Club(Orange) Annual "Break 100" Results
From Friday, May 16th at 4:00PM to Saturday, May 17th at 4:00PM, the Edgar A. Mearns Bird Club of Orange County, held its annual “Break 100”. Beginning on a very wet Friday afternoon, 19 participants braved the weather which gave way to favorable skies and birding on Saturday. The count area includes all of Orange County, The Bashakill, Doodletown, Iona Island, Blue Chip Farm and the Shawangunk Grasslands. The total number of species seen was 155, including 29 Species of Warbler. The goal of this 24 hour period of time is merely to enjoy a day of birding with friends and to surpass 100 species of birds identified. All participants enjoyed the event, with team tallies ranging from 89 to 139 birds. Despite the weather, team totals were about average as compared to years past. One new species for the event was observed, when Steve Schuyler spied a Ruddy Turnstone on the Mud Flats at Cornwall Bay, on the Hudson River. This represents only the third time the species has been seen in Orange County, with the other two sightings being fall birds found in the Black Dirt area. Species of note were as follows: Brant- (Flying North, high above Orange County Airport) White-winged Scoter-(Port Jervis Reservoir) Merlin- (Camel Farm- Pine Island, County Rt. 12) Dunlin – (Camel Farm) Olive-sided Flycatcher -(Doodletown) Alder Flycatcher – (Deli Fields- Bashakill) Kentucky Warbler – (Doodletown) Ruddy Turnstone – (Hudson River- Cornwall Bay Mud Flats) Good Birding, Curt McDermott Mearnsbirdclub yahoo group members can view a detailed list of all species seen and group results, in the "Files" section of the website, as posted by Dr. Ajit Antony. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Warbler Tsunami 5/9
Today from 1100am-2:00PM I watched a seemingly unending wave of warblers passing through my backyard, in Montgomery, NY. In the swath of trees approx. 50 yards wide, running between my house and the Wallkill River, I first noticed birds in the treetops around 11. Over the next 3 hours, I enjoyed 15 species of Warblers at home, in addition to Scarlet Tanagers, Baltimore Orioles and RB Grosbeaks. Total number of birds is an estimated 400-450 during that time, with Yellow rumps making up about 300 of that number. I had my first Blackburnian at home, and then another 7, followed by the highlight of the day, when I spotted a Cape May. My father (Ken McDermott) joined me around 2 PM just as the wave ended. We moved further down river (North in this case) and managed to find the tail end of the wave and a good variety of birds within it. Additionally, we had many Purple Martins feeding above the water. An un believable day of backyard birding. I wonder how many I missed during the earlier hours. Great to be able to share it with my father and friend. Warbler Species: Nashville Parula Yellow Chestnut-sided Magnolia Cape May Black-throated Blue Yellow-rumped 300+/- Black-throated Green Blackburnian- 8+2 Blackpoll Black-and-white Redstart Yellowthroat Wilsons 1+1 I received a report from Scott Baldinger, that he had 25 species of Warbler at the Bashakill today. [nysbirds-l] Orange County Birding 3/16
Yesterday, while birding the Pine Island area, I managed to find 4 Snowy Owls, with a probable fifth. Goose numbers have increased 10 fold in the past few days and while sifting through the flock on Onion Ave., I located 6 Greater White fronted Geese, which I was able to share with Matt Zeitler. Matt was also able to join me on 2 Snowies. If you are in the area, check the geese. I am no longer seeing NJ posts for their Barnacle Goose. Could be any time now for that bird or a Pink footed and Snows with the possibility of Ross's, should be showing up before the end of the week. I finished the day with a Screech Owl calling at home, just before midnight. RE: [nysbirds-l] 3,000 Gulls on the Hudson in Newburgh
Guess I will add my two cents... Each day since Sunday, there has been at least one Iceland gull. All birds have been first year birds, with the exceptions being on Sunday, when a "darker" adult was seen with Tom and Gail and later a second bird, this time a "lighter" adult seen by myself and my father(Ken). These are the first and second adult birds that we are aware of being seen in Orange County in at least the past 40 years. Annually, we get first year birds, but adults have evaded us. Gull numbers this week have ranged from 1,000 - 5,000 birds. In years past, we have had numbers climb to approx. 10,000 birds (Hi Corey), so I am still anticipating a boom. Today, the Hudson at Newburgh was totally lacking Eagles. From all reports, they may have headed a little further south. Hope to see some of you in Orange and Dutchess this weekend. The more eyes the better. There may be something great out there. [nysbirds-l] Smith's Longspur Yes/ Shawangunk Grasslands
The previously reported Smith's Longspur found by Gail Benson and Tom Burke was relocated late this afternoon (4:30 ish) by Steve Schuyler and myself (Curt McDermott). The bird made a brief appearance and then disappeared. A quick call to my father (Ken McDermott) set off a small chain which brought in more troops. The bird was relocated again around 6:00PM and was seen extensively by Kyla Haber, Christine Guarino, Mark DeDea, Mary (of European Goldfinch fame) and myself. Today the bird was seen in three locations. I will give directions to each, using the center of the parking lot as the common reference point. The entrance to the park is on the west side with a road that runs east to a single parking lot. First: Look east in a direction of 12-1 O'clock. Approx. 150 yds. out, there is a flat area roughly the size of a football field. The grass is VERY short, in fact it is the shortest length grass that you will see. The bird was first seen at the left (north) edge and worked its way south across the field. The bird was later re-found in the same location at the north edge of this area. Second: From the lot, look to your 9 O'clock and follow the marked trail north. after the trail passes the two large trees on you right, there will ne an area that was once tarmac and has obvious new grass on top of it. It resembles a grass airstrip. Again, the grass is very short. Walk across this area in an eastward direction. Approx. 100 yds. in, the grass will get longer. This was the second spot where the bird was seen and was also where it was first found on Sunday. Third: Looking from the lot, look to your 10 O'Clock. Far out, there will be a very full Cedar Tree with a boulder in front of it. The bird was in a straight line to the Cedar Tree, approx. half way between the parking lot and the tree. The bird also seems to frequent those areas with the shortest length grasses. Sorry about the lengthy post. I typically delete those. Good luck if you go. PS. The sun rises in the east and north is left of that. 😁 The rest is up to you. [nysbirds-l] Cackling, Pink-footed and 10,000 Snow Geese / Orange County
Early today, Rob stone with called news of a sighting of approx. 10,000 Snow Geese, seen by Herb Houghton in the area of Skinners Lane, Pine Island, earlier in the morning. Rob later called to report that he had seen a flock of approx. 5,000 Snows flying in the area of Oil City Rd., which he followed until they headed into New Jersey. With these birds and thoughts of a Possible Ross's in mind, Dad (Ken McDermott) and I headed out to see what we could find. We began checking the Pine Island hot spots and found ourselves all the way in Skinners Lane. Where the road T's, we turned left toward an area where we had 5,000+ Snows, years ago. At that point a small bridge crosses what is the headwater of the Wallkill River and takes you onto what was once called the "Warren Sod Farm". Approx. 300 Yds. up this road, we came upon thousands of Canada Geese on our right hand side, with Turtle Bay Rd. as a back drop. After scanning for a bit, we came across a Cackling Goose, always nice to see and a first of the year for both of us. Minutes later, we found a Pink-footed Goose!! After 10 minutes or so, about 50 birds lifted off, the Pink-footed among them. We followed the small flock with our Bins until it split into two groups in the area of the apex of the arc of Turtle Bay Rd.(This will make sense when looking on a map). One group set down within view and the other seemed to continue on but appeared to be coming down as well. We quickly headed to Turtle Bay, where we did locate some Geese, but were unable to re-locate the Pink-footed or Cackler. John Haas joined in on the search but by this time (5:15PM), most birds had flown toward the east, presumably to their night time digs. Not sure exactly where all those birds go to be honest. several of us will be out in the morning and will report back if the birds are re-found. [nysbirds-l] Newburgh Gulls
Newburgh Gull numbers increased today to an estimated 8,000-10,000 birds. My father, (Ken McDermott) and I birded the Hudson River from Newburgh from approx. 3:30 to 5:30PM and met up with Dr. Ajit Antony around 5:00. Flowing ice made up approx. 55-65% of the rivers surface. At 3:30, the tide was coming in with open water meeting the edge of the flowing ice, only about 150 yards from the Newburgh shore, making conditions perfect, as most birds occupy that edge. By around 4:30, tide was high and the river seemed to be at a stand still. As the tide began to go out, so did the ice, away from Newburgh, until it was approaching mid river and making ID's more difficult. While still at a good distance, we did manage two good birds. Dad found an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, and I, a first year Iceland. We later refound the LBbG and were able to share it with Dr. Antony. Better birds are certainly better shared. With numbers like that, there has to be more and better things out there. Hopefully this weekend will reveal them. [nysbirds-l] Newburgh Gull Viewing Areas
Hi All, The following is an excerpt from an e-mail to another birder who inquired about locations for gull viewing from Newburgh, Orange County. I thought others may find the info of use. Numbers of Gulls are certainly determined by the amount of ice. When there is no ice, there are only a few hundred gulls within viewing range of Newburgh (Orange County) or Beacon (Dutchess County). It is best when there is a substantial amount of ice on the river. Yesterday it was about 70% covered with flowing ice. Much like the Eagles, the Gulls ride the flows downriver then fly back up when they reach the Cornwall area. As a note, Weather temp, is not a good indicator of flow ice on the river. There are sometimes warmer days that have more ice than cold ones, possibly due to ice melt from areas above. Historically, it is best after 3PM, as the gulls spend most of the day at the dumps at the prison along 84 in Dutchess County, where the gulls are well hidden. The river viewing areas are from Front Street in Newburgh, in the area of Torches Restaurant then moving South along Front Street. The second area is at the bottom of Renwick Street, which is South of Front Street by maybe a half mile or so. At Renwick Street, cross the train tracks then turn right to where the sign points toward "Newburgh Crew Team" or something close to that. You will be about 100 feet south of the City of Newburgh Sewage Treatment Plant. There are picnic tables there that you can sit on under a pavillion that allows for hours of comfortable scanning. If the flow is such that all the ice is on the east side of the river, then crossing the bridge and trying the Beacon waterfront at the Beacon Train Station, can be better. Beacons ice does melt last and when all ice is gone from the river, the small bays in Beacon can be very productive, as they often still contain some ice. I provided a link to a good map which shows the Newburgh Waterfront well. In the event that the link is too long, I simply Googled "Map of City of Newburgh. Hope this helps. [nysbirds-l] Hudson River Gulls
Today, between 4:30 and 5:30PM, Clara Montenegro and I stopped at the Hudson River along Newburgh waterfront to check on gulls. We were not disappointed. My best guess is around 7500 gulls, that were riding the ice flows to Cornwall and then flying back to Newburgh to start the ride over again. The highlight, was 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, with a probably 4th. All adult birds with one 3rd winter going into 4th year. The number of gulls were so great, that I am sure there were immature birds that I missed. Could have used some extra eyes, as they were traveling by at a pretty good clip. Oddly, we did not see a white winged gull of any species although it is hard to believe that none were present. There has to be something better among all those birds. I hope this encourages some to check. [nysbirds-l] Beacon Waterfront/ 3 Iceland Gulls
Yesterday, work took me to Dutchess County and afforded me about 20 minutes to scan the waterfront in Beacon, Dutchess County. At about 3:30 PM, I had 3 juvenile Iceland Gulls. All were between the rocks at the end of Beacon Waterfront Park and the ramp for the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry. Basically the area directly in front of the Beacon Train Station. There were a total of 350-400 gulls there at that time. Gull numbers are on the rise and the first good ones have arrived. Sorry for the late post. After the sighting, I went to my night job and just got home to my computer. [nysbirds-l] Gull ID
Hi all, Although the Slaty-backed did not re-appear for the masses, (and yes I am feeling that ridiculous guilt, as if I could control it) I have high hopes for a re-appearance with the number of gulls that were present further out on the river today. With tomorrow's milder weather on tap, perhaps some of the new ice will subside and bring the birds back in closer to shore. I have to take a minute to thank Rob Stone and John Haas, whom I originally bounced this bird off of over the phone which helped me to be more comfortable with the ID. In addition, Tom Burke was a big help as were Shai Mitra, Willie D'Anna, Betsy Potter, Angus Wilson and again John Haas, all of whom quickly evaluated photos I sent them giving me the thumbs up so that word could be spread quickly. I will keep the list up to speed with future developments. [nysbirds-l] FW: [MidHudsonBirds] Slaty-backed Gull
To: nysbirds-l@cornell.edu; mearnsbirdc...@yahoogroups.com; midhudsonbi...@yahoogroups.com From: tele-...@hotmail.com Date: Sun, 22 Jan 2012 10:14:09 -0500 Subject: [MidHudsonBirds] Slaty-backed Gull For those who might be inclined to try for the Slaty-backed Gull... Although the gull activity seems to be at its best on the Dutchess side of the Hudson later in the day, there is always plenty of gull activity on the Orange County side from Newburgh during the day. In fact, I would speculate that far more gulls can actually be seen from Newburgh due to accessibility to the river. In Newburgh, the river can be accessed from 4th or 3rd street, off of Water Street. There are several restaurants along the river there with a 1/2 mile stretch or so from where the river is easily viewed. This morning I scanned briefly from the Newburgh side as I had to be in the area, and witnessed many gulls riding the ice flows which formed last night, up and down the river. If you are checking the Beacon side, take route 9D south from the Newburgh-Beacon (Hamilton Fish Memorial Bridge). At the second light, turn right onto Beekman Street. There will also be signs directing you to the train station. Continue all the way to the bottom of Beekman Street where you will then see a bridge on your right. Turn right, crossing the bridge and continue straight ahead toward the park. Remain straight until you are at the waters edge, at which point you should see gulls on the ice to your left. Note: The Beacon birding and Newburgh birding spots are only 5-6 minutes apart by car and the bridge is only $1.00 in one direction. Good luck if you go. Please post positive or negative results. [nysbirds-l] Slaty-backed Gull/ Beacon Train Station
This afternoon, Clara Montenegro and I returned to the Beacon Train Station as has been our ritual for the past week. Earlier in the week we had an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull along with a first year Iceland. The following day, we had 2 first year Iceland Gulls and a first year Glaucous. Yesterday morning we had the Glaucous only but returned in the afternoon to find 3 first year Iceland Gulls. Today was grand prize, as we found and adult Slaty-backed Gull which we viewed and photographed from approx. 4-4:30PM. A few things to know before coming. Each morning, the gulls that have roosted on the ice, lift off around 7-7:15 and fly to mid river or to a dump east of here at one of the State Prisons that are along Rt. 84. There is NO access to this dump and mid river, puts the gulls at about 1 mile away. Each afternoon has been the most productive, as the birds re-appear around 3 and continue doing so almost until dark (roughly 5PM). There are several ways into the Beacon Train Station. The southernmost entrance crosses over the train tracks and brings you along the river. When you get to a point where the platform is easily viewed on your right, you will notice a series of buildings on your left. Continue past the buildings and you will see a small cove immediately on you left as well. At that point, you should be within 15 feet of the water. You will see the group of Gulls in this area. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose update
dHi All, I wanted to update the status of the PfG for anyone considering searching for it this weekend. To my knowledge, the bird was last seen on Wednesday morning by Rob Bate and Rich Fried. It is very possible that this bird is still around and has just not been relocated yet. There are many local farms and fields in which the bird can hide. When searching for the Goose, Stage Rd. (GPS will have it in either Goshen, Middletown or Mechanicstown) off of Goshen Tpk. is another good place to look as it often holds hundreds to thousands of geese. Milo Rd. off of Airport rd.(Middletown/Mechanicstown) is another spot that had hundreds of Canada Geese on wednesday as well as a juvenile White-fronted Goose found by Jeff Goulding. The fields near the Orange County Fairgrounds as well as those on the property of Middletown High School are other areas that could hold geese. Lastly, the 6 1/2 Station Rd. Wildlife Sanctuary (located on 6 1/2 Station Rd. in Goshen, NY for those not familiar) is just over the hill from the original spot where the bird was found. Good luck if you go and please continue to post strike outs or success in finding this bird. [nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Grasslands
Hi all, The following message was posted on the E.A. Mearns Bird Club's yahoo group site earlier today by Lynn Barber, President of Orange Audubon. Thought it would be of interest to others. Good morning. I live on Hoagerburgh Road in Wallkill which is such a scenic road looking over at the Ridge with beautiful views all along the way. We residents have been fighting the installation of a 120’ cell tower that will be on Old Hoagerburgh Road, across from the Shawangunk Grasslands. This monstrosity will be seen from miles away and certainly not affect just Hoagerburgh residents but all those who treasure the views that we are so fortunate to have as well as being located in the wrong place for all the birds the grasslands was established for . It is an established fact that cell towers also affect migratory birds killing millions every year. A decision is to be made within a few weeks. Please – if you can write a letter as soon as possible The address is: Town of Shawangunk Planning Board 14 Central Avenue, POBox 247 Wallkill, NY 12589 Thank you very much, Joan McAdam nys Curt McDermott 845-392-3289 -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Orange County Gulls
Happy New Year, Things are heating up on the ice flows along the Hudson River in Newburgh. Due to the thickening ice further up river, birds are being pushed downstream, resulting in big numbers in the Newburgh area.. On tuesday 1/5, Ken McDermott found 3 juvenile ICELAND GULLS as well as a first year GLAUCOUS GULL. Yesterday, wed 1/6, while following up on that report, Rob Stone located an ADULT ICELAND GULL at the same location. The entire stretch of Front Street in Newburgh, is accessible to the public with ample parking as well as well having many dining options. The best viewing is after noon due to the positioning of sun. Recent flocks of gulls number well over 1000 and we certainly have not Id'd them all. RE: [nysbirds-l] querie
Group, I found this to be a pretty interesting question. Although I am no expert on crows (or any other bird for that matter), locally we have several roosts. One exists in Middletown, one in Newburgh and one in Poughkeepsie. Whether it is by coincidence or design, there are about 20 mi. between the Middletown roost and Newburgh roost as well as about 20 between Newburgh and Poughkeepsie. I wonder if the answer is, half that distance or 10 mi. I wonder if population density also plays a roll. Comments? RE: [nysbirds-l] Montgomery Sedge Wren
Hi All, I'm very glad that so many of you have been able to enjoy the Montgomery Sedge Wren and I hope that this continues. I understand that the bird does not offer long clear looks with great frequency but speak from experience when I say that patience here, will pay off. Recently there has been enough foot traffic through the high grass leading to the nesting area that there is now a clearly beaten down path. Once again, please give this bird a wide birth and exercise patients while viewing from a distance. Additionally, the area north of the path (nest area) has been annexed by the DEC to allow these birds an undisturbed nesting site. I strongly advise against venturing from the mowed path. With the appropriate consideration, we should shortly enjoy multiple Sedge Wrens.
