Seema,

Why would you need vncserver to install Oracle? Are you trying to
install Oracle on the Linux box from a remote location?

Re: Any do's and dont's for a 9i oracle installation on RedHat Linux

2002-08-29 Thread Alexandre Gorbatchev

Hi,
Suse7.2 is certified with 9.0.1. It will never be certified with 9.2 and
later versions. Suse has a special product SLES - Suse Linux Enterprise
Server. It's based on Suse 7.2 and include many official patches and
upgrades.
Afaik, with Suse 7.2 you may not upgrade your kernel and be certified with
Oracle. (7.2 out-of-the-box has 2.4.4) It's not always the problem, but you
have a chance to forget about Oracle support when you critically need it.
The current politic of Suse regarding Oracle is to support new products from
now (or some time in the past) on SLES. So it's certified with 9iR2
(including RAC), iAS 9iR2, Apps 11i.
Btw, Suse guys claim that Oracle uses Suse as linux development platform.

I know RH has something like Suse's SLES... called RH AS (advanced server),
but dunno much about it.
We use 7.2 (plus 2.4.16 kernel) for several servers and pretty much happy
with it. However, we will move to SLES soon.

Hi Ray,

I have Oracle 8.1.7 and 9.0.1 running on an Suse 7.2 box configured with
ext3 file systems. Both instances are working properly and without major
issues.

Suse 7.2 comes along with a variety of file systems , including ReiserFS ,
ext3 , ext2 , Aix´s JFS and other that I can´t recall now.

Not on the oracle topic:

RH is pretty insecure out of the box. If you don't take steps
to lock it down the machine will be compromised within the hour in
our experience. There are some good web pages out on the steps
that need to be taken:

http://www.sans.org/newlook/projects/bastille_linux.htm
http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/People/Bill/basic_sec.html

I'd suggest the use of iptables:

http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~jns/security/iptables/

That said, I have a screaming 8.1.7.4 server running on RH 7.1. I am
unhappy with the oracle support matrix for RH, however. It seems to
have stalled a 7.1. I'm thinking of giving SuSE 7.2 a run since it is
supported, hoping the ext3 filesystem is there. RH7.1 only has ext2.
The seemed to be pushing the RH advanced server with 9i, which seems like
a real Redmond, WA thing.

I got 9i release 2 running successfully on a RH7.2 and 7.3 system with no
install or runtime problems.

I also got release 2 to run without any problems on a Mandrake 8.1 and
Mandrake 8.2.

No surprise since Mandrake is based on RedHat.

Re: Any do's and dont's for a 9i oracle installation on RedHat

2002-08-29 Thread Markus Reger

in case you run into troubles with make consult the RH hompages and refer to the notes
for oracle 9 RH server 2.1. These hints/tips work for the distribution of RH
7.0,7.1,7.2,7.3 as well. We have Oracle rdbms 9.2.0 Enterprise edition and OID and IAS
on RH 7.2 and RH 7.3. there shouldn't be any problems with the installation. In
production we use these Oracle products on Sun sparc 5.8 (4 machines) and on Compaque
machines (W2K) - the w2k installations are terminal.

installing oracle 9.0.1 can be a bit tricky.

I am installing RedHat Linux and oracle 9i on two RM servers.

I have never run Linux before. I usually run HP L-class or Sun Sparc
servers with 8/8i.

I would welcome emails with tips anybody has for avoiding anything I don't
know that I should be avoiding yet, if you see what I mean!

OT: Does anyone know why running startx, after boot-up to a Linux text
prompt, causes the shutdown -r to hang the box and not reboot?

How to tell if an o/s and oracle installation is 32 or 64 bit

2002-08-13 Thread John . Hallas

Listers,
Here is a little summary of commands to identify the bit version of an o/s
and 2 methods of identifying whether a database is a 32 bit or 64 bit
installation

Operating System

Compaq Tru 64 - will be 64 bit

HP-UX /usr/sbin/swlist | grep -E '32|64' returns
HPUXEng64RT B.11.00.01 English HP-UX 64-bit Runtime
Environment if 64 bit
Sun isalist -v
If the return contains the phrase 'sparcv9' then it is a 64 bit o/s
Oracle Version
To check Oracle version - 2 methods
do a file on $ORACLEHOME/bin/oracle returns either ELF-32 or ELF-64
executable
Within sqlplus desc v$session and look for the definition of saddr (if
raw(4) then 32 bit else if raw(8) 64 bit)

RE: oracle installation problem

2002-07-01 Thread Theodoros Demosthenous

You have successfully install the software, but it fails during database creation.

Finish your installation without creating a database, and perform the following steps:
1. Run Database wizard to create a database.
2. At the end of the Database Wizard choose the option to have the files created into
an empty directory.
3. Make sure that the parameter file is located at the correct directory, or start the
instance NOMOUNT with the pfile option.
4. From there onwards you can proceed with the database creation.

You can edit the .bat file that is created with the database wizard, and run the
commands line by line if the above is not the solution, in order to find where the
problem lies.

Check that you have the right path for it. Also check that you have the
directory created - Oracle does not create one for you.

where to find Oracle Installation guide for HP-UX ?

2002-05-05 Thread Andrey Bronfin

Hi !
As weird as it sounds - i could not locate the Oracle Installation guide for
HP-UX neither on Metalink nor on Google.
The only one i was able to find was the "Quick start guide" , which is not a
replacement for the full one.
Could u please refer me to a URL where i can get one ?
I'm especially interested in a pre-/post-installation steps needed to be
taken as root.
Thanks a lot !

Re: oracle installation on linux error

2001-09-04 Thread Stefan Jahnke

Hi,

did you mount the cdrom as read only ?
If you have it in your fstab, check for an ro entry in the cdrom line.
I personally prefer to build a stage on a disk to install oracle from.
In case of patches being published, you can go ahead and apply the
patches to the stage (if they are of the kind that can be applied to the
stage as in 8.0.5 on SuSE 6.2 i.e.).

oracle installation on linux error

2001-09-04 Thread Bunyamin K. Karadeniz

When I try to setup oracle on Linux Mandrake 7 , I
encounter an error.

When I try to run /mnt/cdrom/orainst/oratab.sh it
gives error  GROUPS :readonly variable. Why can that be?

I run the script as the root user.

yourself and invent some legends about yourself ("I saved Priceline...").

I've thought that it would be interesting and lucrative work offering
third party apps companies my services in modeling and designing
databases.

Problem is, they don't understand how bad they truly are. Anyone
have ideas on selling ignorant ( no disrespect intended ) folks on
why they need the services of good modelers and DBA's?

Re: Where can I find real-life-examples about ORACLE installation

2001-04-21 Thread David A. Barbour

Remedy is a different beast all right. I found out about the schema
thing when a PL/SQL function I wrote to retrieve dates (stored in
seconds since the epoch) went awry, and the Oracle Discoverer templates
I set up for our engineers stopped working. There are a couple tables,
ARSCHEMA and I think it's FIELDS that will tell you what the table and
field names are. Seagate(Crystal Reports) has an ODBC driver (ugh) that
I'm told map these, or you can do what I did which is to create your own
view using dynamic SQL.

Good Luck.

Hardware, and Oracle has improved in it's ability to join. I assume other

Sorry, thought I had.

My previous employer laid off several folks. I wasn't among them however.
Damagement decided to take this opportunity to redeploy several positions

I'm taking this opportunity to attempt a slight career change and get into

Hardware, and Oracle has improved in it's ability to join. I assume other
databases are faster than in years past as well.

Sorry, thought I had.

My previous employer laid off several folks. I wasn't among them however.
Damagement decided to take this opportunity to redeploy several positions
to HQ in Houston TX.

If you've spent any time in the Pacific NorthWest, you may understand why
I chose to stay here. Likewise if you've been to Houston :)

( hope I didn't offend any Texicans :)

I'm taking this opportunity to attempt a slight career change and get into
the contracting side of things.

RE: Oracle installation

2001-03-14 Thread Jesse, Rich

Remember that if you use Oracle Migrate from 7.x to 8.x, instead of
export/import, you will get an icky performance hit the first time your data
is hit. This is when the block-level changes will take place. So, after
your migration is "complete", you will probably want to do FTSs on all
tables before opening the DB up to The Masses. The changes will be taken
care of for you if you use export/import.

Yeah I can see that absolutely. I just completed migrating a test database
that we are testing for migration from 7.3.4 to 8.1.6. The reason I
migrated it was because it had originally been on an UltraSparc 1 that had
192 MB of RAM and the thing would hardly run on that hardware. We ended up
having to move it to another machine because of the lack of resources on the
original machine. So yeah, I can see how doing this on a machine with 128
MB of RAM would take more than a day.

Oracle Installation on DiskArray

2001-03-06 Thread Sanjay Kumar

Hi,

Thanks to those who replied. I was wondering
whether which RAID level to implement.

My database is not a very critical 24x7 database.
It is a development database. There are going to be only a few users accessing
this database. Infact the data as such is not very important as it is test
data.

Any suggestions on which RAID level to
implement?

TIA
Sanjay

Oracle Installation on DiskArray -

My company is planning to install Disk Array on

After that, I am going to install
Oracle.

I just wanted to know whether is there any special
consideration or steps to be taken to install Oracle on this Solaris? If so what
are the steps? Where can I get that steps from?

I am using Solaris 8 with Oracle 817
