We have gluster 4 container images ready and available at docker hub.

Thanks to Madhu for sending the PR for the same.

*'gluster4u0_centos7' *is the container image tag to pull the same.

Humble, are the container images done and published?

Further, I am thinking we provide a readme of sorts on the download

Yes, I agree with that. But if there are users that expect to see that
packages available for CentOS, we need to adjust our (gluster.org)
release announcement. Packages will become available as soon as possible
for many distributions. Some of these distributions may take months
before they get the 4.x versions. We do our best to get the packages
available in CentOS and certain Fedora (Rawhide) releases almost
immediately, but there will still be some delay.

If there is no note about the Linux/BSD inclusion of the new version,
maybe that should be added. Each distribution will have its delays, and
for the availability the distributions update system should be
monitored. Quicker updates may be possible when more people volunteer
to contribute to do the packaging.

Indeed! I think I CC'd the gluster-announce mailinglist on the CentOS
announcements, or I've fwd'd the approved emails. Not completely sure
though, it is not a very common task.

AFAIK it's not that kind of announcement.

The centos-release-gluster40 rpm is just a kind of meta package with the
/etc/yum.repos.d/... file(s) to be able to install gluster (4.0 in this
case) from the SIG.

And when that package gets pushed then notice of said push is sent to
the SIG mailing list.

This is not a general GlusterFS-4.0 Is Available announcement.

Possibly not the right time to bring this up, so if you folks are busy
with the SIG work, respond later.

This order of things sounds incorrect. We should be announcing this in
gluster.org first, as this is a Gluster release, not a CentOS Storage
SIG release!

I think if there is no other way around this, in the future (or as
planned at 1AM Eastern tomorrow) we should announce Gluster release, and
follow it up with a CentOS SIG announcement mirrored to the gluster
channels.

The following steps need to happen before the packages are easily
consumable:

1. packages need to be signed and pushed to the mirrors
This is expected to happen tomorrow morning UK time.

2. centos-release-gluster40 needs to be included in CentOS Extras
There is only a .el7 package for testing now, I'll do a .el6 package
today too. These packages need to be signed+pushed to the mirrors,
which we can request after (1) in the US afternoon.

3. (2) expects announcment emails to a CentOS list, in a particular
format (see link in email below). I normally send out those emails
and have the CentOS team review/approve them.

As soon as (2) is done, users should be able to consume the packages as
usual. At that time the email to annou...@gluster.org can be sent out.
The announcement on the CentOS list (3) might be a little delayed as
that depends on the availability of the CentOS team.

> This is the biggest complaint we've gotten out of our last releases, not
> being able to consume this.

This time round, we already placed some packages in the gluster-4.0
repositories. That made it possible to do some initial syncing to the
mirrors, so we're less dependent on yet an other task that we need to
request from the CentOS folks. The repositories have existed for a while
without anyone asking/noticing about them, so this seems a workable
optimization for next releases.

Obviously doing the releases in the CentOS Storage SIG need someone to
initiate and work through them. Currently Kaleb and I do all of these,
and we welcome anyone who is serious about assisting with this!

Any further questions?

That will only become available in CentOS Extras once there is an

I merged the changes and also updated the release notes with the extra
bug that is now fixed.

Further I tagged this v4.0.0-2 and redid a release job:
https://build.gluster.org/job/release-new/46/

I assume we redo GA packages with this tarball, and number it 4.0.0-2 as
is required.

@Kaleb/@Niels lmk if there is something more I need to do.

2018-03-11 Thread Shyam Ranganathan
Hi Packaging team (Kaleb),

As mentioned in the threads we had an upgrade issue with 4.0, that broke
backward compatibility.

The fixes are ready and will be merged shortly into 4.0 branch.

How do we go about packaging 4.0.0-2? Would you be taking in .patch
files or should I tag again?

The fixes are:

Thanks,
Shyam

Some call outs!

1) @kaushal GD2 tags for GA need to be created and shared (if not
already done)

2) @humble Once the packages are created for CentOS SIG, and validated
(usually by me), you would need to crank out the container images
