Excellent gallery, Paul. Many look like the full size thing. 45 years ago,
radio control was quite crude compared with today & the units were quite
large & heavy.

Shot an on-roadl radio control scale auto race for fuel burning cars
yesterday. Mostly just to provide some pics for my old pals, but also for
the practice it provides. It’s far more difficult than shooting real
motorsports, as the cars are incredibly fast and not very big. The fastest,
the 1/8th scale cars, are about 15 inches long and can accelerate to 60 in 2
seconds from a standing start. They top out at about 80 mph at the end of
the straightaway. I shot most of it at a 1/8000th shutter speed and
concentrated on getting something in frame and focused. I used continuous
autofocus and it worked when I framed the shots right. I tried a couple of
slower shutter pans and partially succeeded on one, although it’s not
critically sharp. Hard to be smooth, moving the camera that fast. Lots of
fun in any case. A gallery is here:

It's in a Toledo suburb, just off I-280 on Woodhaven Road. It's a permanent

Thanks for the comments, everyone. It seems the consensus is to leave
the image as it is, so I will.

GESO: Radio Control Scale Auto Racing

2016-08-29 Thread Paul Stenquist
Shot an on-roadl radio control scale auto race for fuel burning cars yesterday.
Mostly just to provide some pics for my old pals, but also for the practice it
provides. It’s far more difficult than shooting real motorsports, as the cars
are incredibly fast and not very big. The fastest, the 1/8th scale cars, are
about 15 inches long and can accelerate to 60 in 2 seconds from a standing
start. They top out at about 80 mph at the end of the straightaway. I shot most
of it at a 1/8000th shutter speed and concentrated on getting something in
frame and focused. I used continuous autofocus and it worked when I framed the
shots right. I tried a couple of slower shutter pans and partially succeeded on
one, although it’s not critically sharp. Hard to be smooth, moving the camera
that fast. Lots of fun in any case. A gallery is here:

Re: PESO - wake up call

2016-08-29 Thread Bruce Walker
I also like this from the essay: "Perhaps this is the motive at the
heart of the desire to take images – the record of a constant crossing
between feeling and thinking."

This, to me, speaks to not just Sieff's motive, but to photography in
general which is very precise, scientific and technical in many
aspects and purely artistic in others.

I have a copy of Sieff's 40 Years of Photography (Taschen) and much of
the joy of that book is in Sieff's memoirs and many little quotations
and quips used throughout. That man could write. Very dry,
self-deprecating humour; I love it.

Re: PESO - wake up call

2016-08-29 Thread Bruce Walker
I greatly enjoy Clergue's nudes. He seems to have pretty much invented
the style of superimposing highly contrasting lines -- as from hard
light through a venetian blind -- over the nude form. He also puts me
in mind of Bill Brandt with his tightly framed bodyscapes.

Sieff's style differs appreciably. He prefers more of the subject in
the frame, adding in lingerie more often, with more erotic designs.
Less distortion of the body as compared to either Brandt or Clergue.

But I appreciate all of them for their uniqueness.

Re: Peso-Tarky Shed

Seriously, Bruce, I feel the shed goes too dark immediately with even a tiny
med-tone contrast boost.
It's not the lens' fault, I focused on the shed from fairly close and the DOF
couldn't cover it.
Slightly darkened the grass in the right foreground. Seemed to have a softening
glare.
Thanks, again!

It looks like it would benefit from a little mid-tone contrast boost,
or maybe a sharper lens. but I quite like the triangular composition.

As I'm on a b&w jag lately I'd have focussed more attention on the
form and lines by going monochrome, and cropping out more of the
foreground grass.

Re: PESO - wake up call

2016-08-29 Thread Bob W-PDML
I think it's a human thing.

Here's a strange thing. I'm piecemeal reading a book at the moment, called Les
Rencontres de Lucien Clergue
(https://www.amazon.fr/Lucien-Clergue-ses-rencontres-Photographies/dp/2862344451).

I wanted to write that it was Les Rencontres de Jeanloup Sieff, but couldn't
find any reference to that book, so I checked my copy. It means that for almost
40 years I have conflated these two photographers in my mind. It probably
explains why I found it so hard to reconcile Sieff's nudes and the early photos
by Clergue, and that is one of the reasons I bought the book.

I think I met Clergue/Sieff in about 1980 when hitchhiking around Europe. He
gave me and my gf a lift and we stayed at his place in Arles for a night and
talked a lot about photography. I thought it was Sieff, but maybe it was
Clergue - I don't think Sieff was particularly connected with Arles.

I prefer Clergue's nudes to Sieff's, although I don't think they're his best
work.

Thanks, all!

The only thing I don't care for is the bokeh. I shot this at a variety
of focal lengths and apertures, but the 50-200's bokeh is always
slightly curdled rather than creamy.

That's the price of small size and light weight, though, which are of
increasing importance to me.

Brian,

I like the B&W version much better.

I hadn't seen the original thread until just now, while writing this
message. So, I saw the B&W version first.
I even thought that the "original" was actually a dirivative - colored
with a "creative" filter, and went back to reread your message to verify
that I understood it correctly.

(I admit, it was before 8am, so, I was still waking up.)

B&W is more interesting, more dramatic.
I wanted to see it on a larger scale. So, I zoomed in using the browser.
At that scale, the colored version is fine, and it can stand on its own.
And it delivers a different mood.

But I still prefer the B&W version.

(And I just thought that the dramatism of the B&W version reminds me of
one of the B&W storm images of Dan Matyola. [You know that guy, don't ya? ;-) ])

Why does that not surprise me?

The old Dew Line installations have been abandoned by the military. The
facility in Kotzebue, Alaska, just north of the arctic circle was
transferred to the state, and is now am airport controlled by the local
Native Alaskan corporation. It brings tourism into a small native village
that once was one of the most isolated human settlements in North America.
