[qubes-users] suggestion for quakity assurance of documentation
greetings! while taking first steps with new qubes 4.0, i find that some of the great documentation articles in qubes-os.org are no more 100% accurate for qubes 4.0 (see my previous post on usage of kernel 4.16 for an example). this is quite expectable, given that both the api as well as the technical implementation details of qubes changed a bit between 3.2 and 4.0. however, this coukd make it difficult for the average (or below average) user like me to decide wether the information found us accurate for 4.0 and therfor can safely applied to 4.0. so my suggestion is to add a creation/last updated date to the pages and/or to add an information, to which versions of qubes the article applies, e.g. created for version 3.2, updated/reviewed for usage with 4.0. any other/better solution would be also welcome, of course... thank you and all the best Kai http://kai.froeb.net -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] using bleeding edge 4.16 kernel in qubes for extra protection against spectre and meltdown?
Greetings! and thank you for qubes 4.0 which seems to be even better for every day usage than 3,2 :-). I am aware that usually, distributions are prudent to use latest kernels for some reasons, however, for an ultra security conscious project like qubes the trade off of not inszalling latest kernels is that you miss the security fixes they include. so it is already a great step forward for me that qubes 4 uses the latest „stable“ kernel 4.14, at this moment, even distributions that try to be bleeding edgr, like arch/manjaro offer 4.14 as current default kernel. however, kernel 4.15 and 4.16 were specialy focussed on protection against spectre and meltdown, which are both a threat to the complete qubes concept, as they operate a level deeper (bios level/hardware level) than qubes, if i understand correctly. So wouldnt this special circumstance not justify to use the newsüest kernel 4.15 and 4.16 at least as an option? (btw, on my x220 thinkpad, i was able to use 4.16 with manjaro withot problems, as it is also optimized for notebooks/better battery life, it seems to work even better than 4.14 in every day life so far. however only worked with it for a few days so far). i see that qubes indeed offers the possibility to use even newer kernels, so i tried this: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/managing-vm-kernel/ however, the information is not completly finetuned for qubes 4.0. e.g. in order to see aal kernels available, i needed to issue sudo qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-dom0-unstable --action=list kernel* from the result i got yesterday (tuesday, April 3rd 2018), that at the moment we have only kernel 4.15 as an option (i guess bevause 4.16 is so new, not even a week old, so i hope 4.16 will come as an option in the near future). i was also able to download 4.15 kernel in dom0, following the instructions on the url given above. (basically, using sudo qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-dom0-unstable kernel-latest i am not 100% sure about the kernel name in the last word of the aboce command line, i used the shortest name for 4.15 from the list output from the previous step). however, i was not realy able to follow the instructions for the remaing steps in the articke, in order to actualy use the kernel in dom0 and/or the other vms, most probably due to my limited level of linux expertise. what i found is that some of the steps in the article were nit appropriate for qubes 4.0, e.g. installing qubes-kernel-vm-support grub2-tools in the fedora and/or debian vms/templates semms no mire necessary, because they are already included. so, beside giving some hopefully helpfull hints, my message boils down to this question/request: * what is the opionion of the qubes developers on kerbel 4.15 and 16? would they provide extra security for qubes users? or is everything they provide against spectre and meltdown either already included in qubes or not necessary when using qubes? (from the security advices, i get the impression that this might be the case at least for some aspects, but so far i found no information that gave me the security that indeed nothing from kernel 4.15 and/or 4.16 could improve further the security of qubes) in case that indeed security could be improved by usung kernel 4.15 or even 4.16, i have these further questions/requests: - couldnt you include an option or at least an updated documentation in the url above, so that „normal“ user can use this option safely/without problems (other than the possibility of breaking sonething due to the bleeding edge kernel)? thank you and all the best kai http://kai.froeb.net -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Re: [qubes-users] Qubes 4 won't boot on Thinkpad T430
Greetings, I can report that i was able to install (and boot) the Qubes 4 final without any problems out of the box (no extra boot option) on my Lenovo Thinkpad T430, while installing Qubes 4 from an external dvd drive. The same notebook already worked without problems with qubes 3.2 final. i did not change any bios settings meanwhile. in bios, i enabled both vt options. all the best Kai -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Re: [qubes-users] installation failure hen trying to instal from usb to samsung sad on lenovo 220
Hi Marek, I am using this tool http://www.easy2boot.com/ to create my bootable usb, it is very easy to use, you just copy one or more iso image on the usb in the correct directory (e.g. linux or windows) and then run a little windows cmd script and the usb is ready for use. it has an inbuilt automatic menu, where it offers all the isos for bootng at runtime. so easy to create, maintain and to use. and free. However, if this realy is the case, it explains why I constantly fail to install qubes 4 iso images with it, while all other people, using different tools, aparently do not fail. So may be i need to use rufus or another tool like that.. The funny thing is that it works with Qubes 3.2 installer, but not with Qubes 4.0 installer. So something must have gone worse with Qubes 4 installer, compared to Qubes 3.2 instaler. [qubes-users] installation failure when trying rc5 or final iso on lenovo x220 with samsung ssd as target
may be it is worth to add that the very same hardware combination worked flawlessly when trying to install qubes 3.2 instead (just tried again to make sure) btw, i also apreciated that version 3.2 installer supports so many different langauges apart from english. hope that helps kai -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. [qubes-users] installation failure when trying rc5 or final iso on lenovo x220 with samsung ssd as target
greetings, i copied the current iso (tried it.both with rc5 and with today final official iso) to a 32gb usb stick and made my lenovo x220 boot from it. all went well until i choosed to habe the newly installed samsung 512gb ssd as target (it was listed in the graphic menu of the available targets). the system kind of halted for a second or two and then throwed an anaconda 25.20.9-12 exception report Trace back (most recent file first): File "/usr/python3.5/site-packages/blivet/devicetree.py", line 184, in _remove_device raise ValeError("Device %s not in tree" % dev.name)e ... The exact same line raised already an error when trying to install rc5 on two other lenovo laptops (t430 and l560) with several different usb drives as targets some days ago. So at this point, i am a bit without clue what else to try, to get qubes installed and i am wondering a bit what causes all the other installations to work for all other users? all the best Kai -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. noone interested in this bug? same bug also happend with today final odficial version 4 final when trying to install kt on a ssd. so it seems more generic and important than i fist thought. so i will issue a new bug report on that one, because it is now no more limite to usb stick as target for instaling. all the best kai -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Hi Unman, the error message is "ValueError: Device 'sdc4' not in tree", what is puzzeling, when I select the target media directly from the graphical list of proposed instalation media. [qubes-users] installation failure when trying to install q4 rc5 from usb to usb
greetings! when i noticed that the new rc5 did so far not generate any serius bug report so far, i thought to myself that now may be the time to give it a new try (rc1 wasnot usable for me, so since then, i did not touch the rcs until now). i had the idea to use my lenovo t430, which works very well with qubes 3.2, as installation machine, but in order to be safe, not only to install from a 32gb usb stick, but to also use a (256gb) usb stick as target. the installation process started fine but finally failed shortly with an anaconda error when i selected the usb stick and clicked continue. possibly it is not a qubes error but an anaconda error. same hapoened, when i tried this usb combination with the same usb sticks but my lenovo l670 notebook. all the best kai http://kai.in -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group.
