Re: [RBW] Surly after Riv
The font they use for the name on the downtube is an instant turn-off for me. Fortunately that name and perceived negative association their marketing holds, are easily removed. I commute on an LHT that most sufficiently met my set of needs and wants when I bought it from a shop that hasn't transacted its soul for a corporate brand floor plan. Had I given up and picked one of the big brands' scant offerings in that vein, I'd be a corporate handmaiden of marketing beyond downtube foolery on my benign ride to and from work. They cannot grasp the idea of selling a bike, not a rolling billboard of graphics and shapes. Each part need not be marked, logo-laiden or utmost. I think the real advance of Riv, Surly, Soma, Salsa, etc. is the forward progress of bikes relevant to people rather than the use of high expense (i.e. racing team sponsorship) advertising campaigns to achieve brand identity among people receptive to, but not really cyclists. I'll stick to the expense of bikes and products that are about the bikes and products, even if they take themselves a bit too seriously. That is far less distasteful to me than having to be like a lone homecoming parade float for one of the majors, those things have really gotten garish and visually overdone to ensure that each model carries a visual message to the peers of the buyer. Against that setting, more power to brands that let more shops carry more brands and models of their and their customers' choice without the soul-selling floor planning that taints so many shops now. Re: [RBW] Surly after Riv
Andy and others who bemoan the selling out of the Rivendell ideal -- have you ever owned a bike shop and been responsible for the care and feeding of your workers? Just curious. I used to co-own a shop, and had to make payroll twice a month. In the end high ideals won't put food on your employees' tables or clothes on their backs. Say what you like about Surly and the companies that wish they were more like Surly, but their bikes are far more affordable and they sell, logo font and quasi-sexist vibe be damned. And when fly out the door and customers are happy, your workers won't starve. Making payroll because your shop is selling and servicing decent bikes and making people happy is a lot better than the alternative. For awhile, I bemoaned how other companies had begun to copy Rivendell's ideas -- steel bikes with comfortable, non-racing geometry, wool tops, et al. Getting bicyclists with less disposable income on board by making cheaper copies of the cool stuff simply encourages them to ape the rich, right? Sure. Fine. Whatever. In the end, all the copying/flattery has gotten a crap ton more people outside and on bicycles -- enough more that I don't really care anymore how they got there. Riv started something really beautiful, and it comes as no surprise that other companies have taken up the mantle and are spreading good, sensible ideas. So what if my wool jersey says Surly (or Pearl Izumi or Novara) on it? Better yet, so what if I scored my last lot of wool tops from Goodwill? and they fit a little loose or lumpy? It's all good. Hey, I'm outside riding my bike in nearly all kinds of weather. I'm happy. I doubt I will ever be in a position to ever buy another Rivendell bicycle. That's cool. I know what makes a bike sensible and comfortable and I can replicate an awful lot of both the geometry and aesthetic on almost any cheaper steel bike available to me. So in the end, honestly, I think Rivendell has won. Cheers and happy riding -- Beth Hamon, getting ready to go ride in the rain. Again. Re: [RBW] Surly after Riv
Hear Hear, I recently bought a Soma Grand Randonneur to replace my bombadil and have to say I am very happy with the frame (haven't built it yet). Tight welds, nice thick paint, nice alloy headbadge, threading for fenders, lowrider mounts, double eyelets on the dropouts, etc. Its a great frame, retails around 500 I think but I got mine for 375 and am really happy. It keeps me riding until I see how this Clem thing shakes out and maybe it will become my everyday bike, I like that Mike Kone was in on the design too! On Thu, Oct 23, 2014 at 11:36 AM, Beth H beth.hamon...@gmail.com wrote: Andy and others who bemoan the selling out of the Rivendell ideal -- have you ever owned a bike shop and been responsible for the care and feeding of your workers? Again. The best Faux-Badge of all time is the one Mike Varley puts on his Black Mountain bikes. The sticker has screw heads as part of the artwork. It's rad! [RBW] Bike and Hatchet First Aid
Tony, While I usually carry minor patch-up stuff on short rides and a full kit for touring, the one thing that always goes with me is a small packet of baby wipes to which I add an ounce or so of witch hazel. This can work to clean road rash (the most likely need, frankly) or other minor wounds. In a pinch, it can even replace TP in case of an urgent need with no port john around. The witch hazel is easier on the skin than alcohol, IMHO, though either will do. Paul Germain Tony DeFilippo vpi...@gmail.com: Oct 18 07:52AM -0700 Since early August I've had or have been close to others with some bad luck on the bike and using a hatchet... I've been over the handlebars twice and then this weekend a good friend put one of my axes (fiskars x15) into his knee while splitting wood. All's well in each case thank goodness though two out of the incidents involved the emergency room and the Axe wound required an ambulance. Prevention of these incidents is definitely worth discussion and I've given each allot of thought in that regards but the recent issue with the Axe really has me thinking hard about my first aid kit for the woods and while on the bike... We were lucky to have several level headed people (couple of eagle scouts!) And the materials to improvise a tourniquet and compression bandage. So as I've been pouring over trauma kits for my truck and campsite I also started thinking that as a nearly every day commuter I should have some kit with me on the bike just as I have repair tools for the bike. The things I'm thinking of so far include; -wound cleaner, alcohol wipes? -antibiotic ointment -sterile gauze bandages (typical road rash size) -conforming wrap or athletic wrap or medical tape -triangle bandage -small assortment of band aids -rubber gloves Would the following be overkill; -CAT style tourniquet -quick clot sponge or bandage -'Israeli' style compression bandage -trauma shears The scenario for this kit is urban commuting with professional emergency responce time of 10 min or less, cell service at all times and the level of training I have is relatively basic. (Scout and basic military level). Oh and it needs to fit in either a large saddle wedge, frame bag or other such unobtrusive, stays on bike type location. [RBW] Re: These ones go to 11, again
For light and expensive wide-range cassettes (10 speed is what I usually run), I think the 11-36 Sram $279.00 XG-1080 is hard to beat. The machining is so elegant (they are machined from a single block of steel) you could just stare at it, but I have them on all of my off-roady type bikes and they have held up well. I tend to pick them up at swaps where pro mtb riders are jettisoning extra stuff. I've scored 3 of them for around 40/each. They are on sale now for $189 at Outside Outfitters. Hi, Is there a significant difference in the strength of stainless vs carbon steel M5 allen bolts when it comes to mounting the lower rack supports to the frame? I have two Bombadils, an older parallel-undertube and a newer tentacular. Older takes a 27.2 mm post and newer 26.8 mm. Here’s a pic: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/10492202654/in/set-72157637736975573 As a complete bike, you’d be buying a truly unique build – a single speed Bomba built around a beautiful wheelset using Ghisallo wooden rims, complemented by parts selected throughout for beauty, comfort and functionality. Full build list attached, includes high-polish Bruce Gordon cantis with Paul levers, Peter Weigle-modified Campy front hub, White Industries ENO Eccentric rear, Stronglight crank with custom Bespoke Chainrings single ring, Phil Wood pedals, Nitto Bullmoose bars, Nitto Lugged seatpost, Berthoud rack/saddlebag combo. It rides like a Riv, with plenty of Hetre comfort. Here’s a pic: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13174275065/in/set-72157637736975573/ There are lots of other pics in my Flickr stream. About $4500 invested. I know this bike is not for everyone, but if you’re interested you won’t find another bike like it anywhere. I don’t have a clue what a bike like this is “worth”, so if you’re the right buyer, make an offer for the full bike or some combination of frame and parts you’re interested in. -- This email (and any attachments thereto) is intended only for use by the addressee(s) named herein and may contain legally privileged and/or confidential information. [RBW] Re: Using Stainless vs Carbon Steel Bolts for Racks?
I doubt it's a question of strength. I've never sheared a rack bolt, I've carried some heavy loads. I prefer stainless for it's better corrosion resistance but have never had a carbon steel bolt rust in place either. Note there are a couple of grades of stainless that vary in corrosion resistance. IIRC, heat treated carbon steel that is grade 5 or higher (often referred to as aircraft grade) is stronger than stainless. dougP On Wednesday, October 22, 2014 10:14:08 AM UTC-7, John Phillips wrote: Hi, Is there a significant difference in the strength of stainless vs carbon steel M5 allen bolts when it comes to mounting the lower rack supports to the frame? Let's take a look. The M5 screws that ship with some nitto stuff are marked 10.9 (or grade 8), which is pretty f'n good. Interestingly enough, I've had rack failures but not at the screw, but at the eyelet of the nitto strut. Didn't someone (maybe from Riv?) mention the bars on the Rodeo in the BLUG were Ahearne Map bars? They have a modest sweep back maybe a small amount of rise but very little. Thanks to everyone for orders for these. The remaining 10 packs have been claimed. I'll be punching the remaining of these this weekend (noise complaints got me in a little trouble from the gf). Since I'm out of scraps, I have a different price point for smaller packs that I can cut out of leather I'd normally use. Options are here: http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/leather-fender-washers-10-pack http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/leather-fender-washers-25-pack Also available are waxed canvas bags, a few black medium saddle wedges are ready right now.
