[sdre-l]: live cd and recent tour

2000-08-16 Thread Daniel Trudell

hey all,

This may be just me, but has anybody who had the good fortune to attend a
show of the recent tour been a bit disenchanted by the HIFTBSO tour live
cd as a result? I've been listening to it, and though it captured the
energy and mood of that tour, the songs on it that were played both tours
just don't stack up to how they were played this tour.

I guess this is good, it means SDRE had a great time this tourand man
did it rock. It just makes me want to pop in one of their studio cd's now
whenever I hear a track from the live cd. Hopefully when the hotline
server's back up, there will be complete audio from this tour on it...that
would be sooo coool.

well...we have as much of a chance of seing them as they do...think about
it...we get our tickets from the same place, we'll have to wait in the
same lines. the ratio of dmb/sdre fans is statistically insignificant.

on the other side of this coin...it would be awesome if this led to a vast

[sdre-l]: sf show reviews

2000-07-31 Thread Daniel Trudell

Ok all, here's reviews of both Saturday and Sunday's SF/slim's shows.

Saturday,
-
My friend and I arrived in the area at about 6p. We went to Wa Ha Ka to
meet listies, but we were a good hour earlier than I told everybody. I
would have stayed until 7, but I could only listen to the music for so
long, sorry to all the people who showed.

So after a good hour+ wait in line, the doors opened at 8p and we
deposited ourselves front & center at the stage. No Knife started out
strong, lulled, and then rocked a bit more. Then came SDRE.

The setlist:
Fool
Pillars
One
The Ocean
KBAA
G & VG
Snibe
ESTYA
Dissapear
TimH
J'nuh
-
8
TRT
In Circles

After Fool, which truly rocked btw, people were shouting out song
names. I thought I'd be cool and show how encyclopaedic my knowlege
was. I looked Jeremy square in the eye (he was 3 feet in front of me) and
shouted "Something I learned from X(Z?)eno", which I promptly remembered
he didn't sing on. How embarrassing for me. That didn't phase him,
though, because the rest of the show blew last years tour clear out of the
water. I had the best time last year, but Man, it was night and day. Dan
looked like the happiest man on earth. His brothers were there, and we
all cheered for them. There were times I was worried that if he jumped
any higher, he'd get stuck in the roof. The floor literally shook during
Tearing in my Heart. The last time my bones rattled that much, I was 20
yards from a supersonic jet taking off. Talk about moving songs, the
earth moved for them. SDRE is too much band for their equipment. Jeremy
broke a string on 8 (or was it j'nuh, I don't remember if it was
before/during the encore).

Sunday
--
No Knife busted their Bass amp, but SDRE was kind enough to lend them
theirs for the set. I was a bit worried, because if they broke one...then
what if they broke SDRE's...I was nervous. However, the concert gods
smiled upon us, and the amp was ready to go for SDRE. The first thing
said when they went on stage was "How many people were here last
night?" I shouted as loud as I could. I was not alone, but us serial
SDRE show seers were clearly the minority. This was good, because both
nights were sold out. My friend has been seeing shows at slims for years,
and said that it is definitely rare for a band to sell out slim's both
nights. Then they said that they'd change up the setlist a
little. DRAT! me without my pen. Here's my best guess as to the setlist
(durned memory):

KBAA
One
Pillars
The Ocean
ESTYA
Fool
G & VG
Snibe
TimH(TimH and Dissapear may be transposed)
Dissapear
J'nuh
-
In Circles
8
TRT

People were again shouting song names. Jeremy said there would be another
tour soon, and that they would play more of the old stuff. Then they said
something to the effect of "we'll take requests for the tour
now" WOOHOO!!! I think I busted a vocal chord shouting Spade and Parade
and GREEeeDee I teamed up with the guy behind
me, and we took turns shouting grendel. Dan said something like "That
one's difficult" to which I replied "WORTH IT!!" The bit they added onto
TRT was cool both nights On saturday, it led into In Circles. Sunday, it
was last, so they did a relly cool exit. By that point, everybody who
didn't have a drunstick in their hand was on guitar/bass. Everybody
(exept Will, of course) left a feedback riff on their guitar as they left,
one at a time. Jeremy threw his pic into the audience. Whoever got it is
s lucky. The last person to leave was the guy on Keyboards. He left
a feedback loop on his guitar that lasted a while after they were all off
stage.

In allthe whole weekend ROCKED!!! I still have a big ol' grin on my
face.

Re: [sdre-l]: Another tour?

2000-07-31 Thread Daniel Trudell

Last night they told the audeince that they were going to be touring
soon. Then they said (I don't know if they were joking) that they would
take requests...now (at the show)! I shouted spade and parade and grendel
as loud as I could. The guy behind me and I were taking turns shouting
grendel, and Dan said something along the lines of "that one's difficult",
to which i yelled "worth it"!

I went Sat and Sun...stay tuned, details to follow :)

[sdre-l]: sf show this saturday

2000-07-24 Thread Daniel Trudell

Ha HA!

Cool, i've been holding on to these tickets for a long time. It's been
over a year since I saw SDRE, and I'm starting to twitch...hehe. If any
listers want to get together before the show and hang out, I've already
staked out a place to meet. Wa Ha Ka is a Mexican bar/grill that has
awesome food, and is less than 100yards away (11th/folsom) from
Slim's. And yes, it's all ages. I plan to be there around 7, eating,
drinking and being merry with whoever wants to join me. This is by no
means organized, it's just a cool place to hang before a concert.

I'll be the guy talking to strangers, seeing who's a fan. I'll either
have a black leather jacket on, or a hooded sweatshirt with a robot's head
embroidered on it.

Meet me there (I'm a sucker for a good pun)

[sdre-l]: how and why the silence

2000-07-22 Thread Daniel Trudell

Hey all,

before the discussion about why the list went down gets all wierd, here's
a few things I found out:

1. the machine that serves sixfootone.com wasn't responding to anything
on the net...the whole domain was silent

2. without getting too technical, lets just say that other machines in
the same neighborhood at that ISP weren't talking either

3. So...this leads me to believe that a switch or router at the isp was
the culprit, or anything else that could have made almost and entire
"subnet" go deaf and mute.

I don't think that any of the people specific to the running of sdre-l are
to blame. And I'm sure the ISP worked as hard and fast as it could to fix
the problem, as it seemed to effect them too.

ok...so lets put down the flamethrowers and discuss SDRE :)

Re: [sdre-l]: "Faces In Disguise" AWOL?

2000-07-05 Thread Daniel Trudell

the set is really trt heavy, maybe they wanted to drop a song. For me,
this is good, because it's the one song on TRT that just hasn't interested
me yet (I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying it hasn't
"grabbed" me) and I wouldn't miss it if they didn't play it. I think it'd
be cool to encourage SDRE to go on a non-album specific tour, so they
could have the freedom to play what they feel is the "ultimate" SDRE set.

does anybody know if that "dickies-esque" jacket on AD's site is just a

Re: [sdre-l]: sdre.com is up...

2000-06-22 Thread Daniel Trudell

I was just there.

I got my TRT CD last night, and it has www.sunnydayrealestate.com on the
back. It leads me to believe that artistdirtect didn't have the site
ready yet, and this site went up so timebomb wouldn't sue them. All they
did was a topnav, a leftnav, the front images and images for apparel and
cd's. I wouldn't be surprised if they stole the cd images from John and
Reb's site (nexusx.com/sdre). Big sites like this generate their html on
the fly, or have templates for production teams to plug content
into. This is in no way several months worth of work. SDRE and timebomb
got robbed.

Maybe we should start a web petition to either bring back Brian's site, or
make "in the blue" the official site. AD DOES have a working merch site,
the new official site can just link to it. ITB (abbrev in the blue) has a
great bulletin board setup (better than ad's) and is sdre-l friendly. I'm
willing to conspire with all the big webbheads as to how we can outshine
AD's page and win SDRE/timebomb over.

it was more of a rant than anything else. a shot in the dark, muster the

SDRE any morejust wish they never got the project in the first

artistdirect to jump ship to mp3.com, stating the slack-ness of ADS as
their reason. THAT would impact their finances and motivbate them.

Re: [sdre-l]: cali shows

1999-07-06 Thread Daniel Trudell

july 3rd:

my mind was pretty cloudy and hazy by the time they came on, but I can
tell you the songs I remember.

pillars
guitar and vid games
the blankets were the staris ( I know it was from diary, and I know
they played it, but when is still murky to me)

then they played a whole lot more of HIFTBSO. with some lp2 mixed in
(including rodeo jones) Encore was:
In Circles
roses in water
days were golden

I just have a hard time remembering the setlist during the middle. Next
time, I'll bring a pad and pencil.

In related news: sunset valley was ok. Mike Watt was cool, but the singing
got in the way sometimes. Before they let us in, Jeremy was in and out of
the place, but nobody noticed until they saw him take the mic. I guess
we're all used to blurry pixelated gif's from the web, because I know now
that he looks different from 3 feet away on the street than he does on the
web. I looked into the windows of the little cafe under the hall, and
definitely was able to see dan (or some other distinctly bearded fellow)
but I was walking and talking with someone at the time, and didn't see
anyone else.

I also would like to hear about the july 4th show, especially where/when
they played in relation to the other bands. I dream of a show where SDRE
was on the mainstage, and some better known bands were in the rinky-dink
stage they put together in the parking lot. Don't get me wrong, I like
Sonic Youth, but I would like to see SDRE on the big stage, with the big
crowd.

NE-WAY...
definitely the high point of the weekend. If you do have the means to see
them, I DO reccomend going.

It's pretty cool how the albums have similarities. Even though they may
sound so different. I was making an SDRE mix tape for my friend, because
she had expressed an interest, and I felt like she'd like the band. I put
100 million after Theo B on the tape, and found that the lead guitar parts
are similar too. Cool. I like the Theo B one better, though.

[sdre-l]: my sdre ticket adventure in SF

1999-06-05 Thread Daniel Trudell

Hey all

This is the story about me and some others trying to get tickets in SF
today. I'm writing it from the point of view of Grendel (diary) becuase
it kept going through my head.

"the rain came to wash away my tears"

So a couple of days ago, Morgan enlightened us all that there was an SDRE
show in San Francisco on july 3rd. This is good, because I live in
hayward (CSU hayward, 30-40 miles from SF) and was planning to drive down
to irvine and see them on the 4th. Oh joy!

"I wanted to see them, but instead I destroyed my chance"

So this morning, I go over to maritime hall (the place where the show is)
to be the first kid on my block to have a shiny magic ticket. I ran into
Morgan and a friend. I decided to go into the building a little early
becuase it's in my nature to do so. Maritime Hall's offices are on the
third floor, and on my way up the stairs I saw an ATM. I went outside to
tell Morgan (they were talking about finding an ATM) and the only open
door to the place closed and locked behind me. Drat. We went around
checking out all the doors. I had the idea of throwing rocks at the
window and seeing if somebody would let us in (wel...the original idea was
to hurl a brick with a message through the window, but I believed they
would be reluctant to sell me a ticket if I did so. I watched too many
cartoons as a kid.) Morgan got on the phone and found a place that sells
tickets for Maritime, so I followed them on a sinuous and perplexing path
to Reckless Records on Haight and Masonic. When we got to there, I went
off to find parking, and that's the last I saw of them.

"Suede scars and time is right"

So I find parking and hoof it on over to the record store. I got inside,
and was overjoyed to see a Joy Division t-shirt on the wall. Cool, I can
attend to being a good fan of my other favorite band too. The clerk told
me that the guy who delivers the tickets doesn't come around until about
2pm. I needed to kill some time. I walk out of the store, and see that
I'm only a block from Ashbury (Haight and Ashbury). MMMm...the
memories. I was outside of a coffee shop on cole/haight singing SDRE
songs for about an hour. I freaked out this bum while singing Spade and
Parade. I guess "though I remove, spade and parade, the guilt and bones
through my sand castle" COULD unsettle the uninitiated. I followed up
with Joy Division's "Disorder" to really freak out before I went to ameoba
to kill some more time. Finally, it was 1:50, time to walk to the other
record store. I get back and they say that the guy hasn't brought the
tickets yet. I decided to browse around for a few minutes in case the guy
was just a little late, and they had used 7"'ers (I was looking for the
friday single, so I could make a better MP3 of spade and parade than the
one I downloaded off of the net.) Don't get too mad about the MP3...it's
the only way a lot of people will be able to ever hear that song (to my
knowlege). I left empty-handed and decided to hang out with my friends
(who live nearby, but weren't home earlier).

  "It's raining tonight"

I got back to my car and found a parking ticket heinously posted under my
windshield wiper. Drat. I got to my friends house, and at about 5pm, I
called Reckless back to see if they got the tickets. The clerk (a
different one) told me that they hadn't gotten them, and on further
questioning, revealed that they didn't know when they would. Blast.
Curses. I went home, borrowed a credit card, and bought a ticket from
basstickets.com. I could have gotten a ticket in the city for $18, but I
ended up getting it online for 33.60 because of surcharges and S&H. Oh
well. It sure beats driving for several hundred miles, stopping only for
gas and nature calls, seeing SDRE, and driving all the way back. I'm not
saying that I won't still do that maybe (I might get "inspired" and
decide to drive down anyway, you never know where the day will take you.)

NE-way, The moral of the story is that because of my SDRE Fan-ness, I had
an interesting adventure in SF. Otherwise, I probably would have done
laundry or something.

Hope to see some of you there
Dan
