I have just had a look through your uhj recordings discography, many 
thanks for your efforts with this data,   at the end of the listing you 
gave some recording Company addresses,unfortunately the address 
given for Collins Classic is now out of date I think. I live quite close to
this address & I believe that the Electron House quoted for Collins Classics
no longer exists,  (it now consists of  Retail units).

I think I'm the quilty one. Mark and I sometimes put releases in the list
just to try if someone comes up with a better information about them. And
now you did, after just slightly under 20 years from when Mark posted it.

Mark could move the BBC records under the rumoured-and-definitely-not-
Ambisonics-category.

The Discography actually lists two Last Night releases:

-   BBC Singers, BBC Symphony Chorus, BBC Symphony Orchestra, -
Highlights from the Last Night of the Proms, cond. Sir Charles
Groves, James Loughran. Live from the Royal Albert Hall, BBC
Records CD 58OX (England), H-matrix. Tracks 1-2 recorded in
Sept. 1977,Tracks 3-7 recorded 1982.
The recordings on this CD conducted by Charles Groves were
originally released on vinyl as "Highlights from the Last
Night of the Proms" issued as BBC Records REH290.

-   Colin Davis - at the Last Night of the Proms. Philips 6588-011
(LP) This was the original release of the 1972 Proms concert.
The CD with the same title appears to contain only a portion of
the selections from the original lp [some of selections
duplicate the 1969 recording but were performed again in 1972].

I have the two CD:s, which are re-releases of vinyl LP:s. I might have one
LP as well, although I would need to dig it out.

My guess about the encoding was based on the fact that IBA made H-Matrix
test radio transmissions during the same years, as those concerts were
recorded.
I know, that there is just a tiny small possibility that a recording would
have been made after an encoder, but then again, if it was a surround
recording, where else would you take a two channel output than after the
encoder?

I should now also dig out the magazine articles about the IBA tests. 
They are in
the Motherlode, but Mother only knows, by which name.

I did listen to the recordings both with an H-matrix and a UHJ decoder back
in the nineties. They didn't sound bad at all to me as decoded. But now that
we have a larger group of fresh ears, we can re-listen and decide whether
they are Ambisonics or not.

Please pay attention to that the re-releases contain tracks from different
years.

To your original question; I don't know of any 45J releases.

Hi Richard, We ran across that article a while back and I have not been able
to confirm that the recording is UHJ. Below is what is listed in the
discography

Recordings thought to be UHJ, but are not
-   A review of the Meridian 565 surround processor in "Home
Theater Technology" mentioned that "Enya - Watermark"
is ambisonic. The review was available at one time on the
internet, as well as Meridians home site.

After an extensive search, I have not been able to confirm
that "Watermark" is UHJ. I think it is safe to say at this
time that the recording is not ambisonic. However, the song
Orinoco Flow does sound better in UHJ than plain 'ol
stereo.

I have often wondered if there was a way to confirm matrix encoding by using
a scope to display phase differences, but have found that not to be the case
so I have had to resort to finding an associate involved in the recording
for confirmation. That is what lead me to contact you in '95 to get your
input on the rumor of Tina Turner-Break ever rule being UHJ encoded.

Researching some historical Meridian information today I came across a piece
from Hi-Fi Choice, March 1995, p20 et seq by Malcolm C Steward entitled
"Welcome to Digital Wonderland" that I had not previously read. 
In a sidebar on Surround Sound Modes on Meridian's 565 Digital Surround
processor, Steward writes: "...The 565's Ambisonic mode deals with
recordings encoded in UHJ format... This includes... Enya's Watermark CD..."

I don't think I have ever previously heard a claim that this CD is or
contains a UHJ mix. I do theoretically have the CD around somewhere, but
while I rummage in a large number of boxes, has anyone tried decoding it? If
so, what are the results? Has this claim surfaced elsewhere, and what do we
know about its veracity?

I've said it before (in-between one of my long rants), but I'll say it 
again: most likely most matrix encodings, whether active or passive, 
could be recognized blindly with the proper digital signal processing. 
I've never tried it, but there is plenty of theory to support it, and in 
more than one way.

For example, if you can ever lock onto a single source which gives out 
even a single, sustained harmonic which slides slowly enough in 
frequency, it is possible to calculate the local form of the transfer 
function from the source to the recording from there. Or if you ever 
know some source is impulsive enough, it's possible to use it as a 
bootstrap for multichannel deconvolution, where reverb is an aid to 
detection, instead of a hindrance. And so on.

I've never done it, but it's eminently doable. I wouldn't be surprised 
if it was doable, with whole pieces, to the level of identifying 
individual encoding circuits, or at least their faults, instead of just 
encoding standards. I mean, we have a *stupendous* amount of prior 
knowledge available about what music seems like when viewed through 
mathematical-statistical indicators, whereby seeing which kind of a 
system they went through before landing in our hands as an encoded 
version ought to be a rather straight forward (if modelling and 
computation intensive) problem.

OMG I have started a format war! 
I am still hurting after investing so much in DVD-Audio and SACD. Now it's
Bluray and don't let us forget all the matrix formats (Software & Hardware)
I have bought.

Hi Mark,

I have used for many years the free Web
hosting company Tripod.com.  Unlike other
such companies, Tripod seems to stick around.
The disadvantage is that your readers have to
put up with silly banner adverts.  (You can
eliminate these if you pay them money each
month.)

If you choose to go this route them e-mail me
before choosing your Tripod Username.
There are DNS rules to look out for; I broke
these, and have regretted it ever since.

Always nice to hear from you. Thanks so much for the offer but I am really
looking to keep the site as a whole since it offers more than my just my
interest in ambi but also helps collectors of surround recordings with the
research I have done. I certainly understand the separation as we do not
need the dolby name contaminating such a fine site as ambinsoic.net

I was really devastated when I found out it was down after all the years.
The last time I checked (years ago) domain names cost a lot and paying for
web space just does not make a lot of since for something I do for free to
help others find ambisonic (or surround) recordings. I am currently getting
up to speed on my options in this day of age (domain names are cheap) and
will let you know what I need to do. Fortunately Martin's website still
hosts a text version of the discography (need to check though since my site
has been stable since '94). Thanks for responding so quickly, I appreciate
the offer as it was like losing a loved one.

As of today, my internet provider has eliminated providing personnel web
pages to customers. 

This means the Surround Sound Discography and its counterparts like the
Quadraphonic, Ambisonic, Circle Surround & Dolby Discography's are currently
not on the internet.

At this point I do not know when it will be back up as I need to investigate
my options (maybe a twitter account! no.damn...not enough new UHJ
titles to post like that).

Thanks to Eero Aro and Martin Leese for all the support over the years. I
would also like to thank the folks that have helped with our hobby and have
shared the interest of surround sound since the site appeared in 1994. 

I will post an update when one is available and any suggestions are
appreciated.
