Sound continued to play and I could still move the mouse, but Ubuntu

I managed to collect information from ubuntu-bug by dropping to a

When a file is dragged on the panel, only its associated application can be
raised and used with while the others are desaturated and useless.
This is too much restrictive. The desaturated effect is very useful but
should not prevent applications to be interactive.

For instance, if I drag a picture on the panel, I can only open it with some
graphical applications while one would want to insert it in a libreoffice
document or in a terminal or move it to home folder.
This is particularly relevant when the desired application is minimized or on
another desktop.

windows related to the selected application are shown in a kind of "windows

It is work with all applications and also for Libre Office if the user opens
documents from the same instance of Libre Office like Following :
  - Launch Open Office
  - File -> Open -> Open a first file
  - File -> Open -> Open a second file
  - Dbl click on Libre Office launcher button, the "Windows Overview" is shown

But it does not work when the user opens multiples documents with Nautilus :
  - Open Nautilus
  - Open a first ODF document
  - Open a second ODF document through Nautilus
  - Dbl click on the Libre Office launcher, the first Libre Office window is
focused

I don't know if it is a full Unity related bug since if I start to
instance of Firefox from two terminal the "windows overview" is well
  shown.

Bug description:
The position that one has scrolled to is very hard to make out on my
CRT monitor (19"). I think its a combination of the subtle colours, my
red-green colour insensitivity (Anomalous trichromacy - 7% of males)
and the thin region - when I squint I can make out the thumb. This
makes navigation a little tricky, exacerbated by the grabs only
showing up on the thumb. I have a couple of digital photos I can
  upload if that will help.

Bug description:
When a user double click on a launcher button in the Unity launcher bar, all
windows related to the selected application are shown in a kind of "windows
overview". Thus if application have multiple windows opened, you can select the
which one you want.
It is work with all applications and also for Libre Office if the user opens
documents from the same instance of Libre Office like Following :
  - Launch Open Office
  - File -> Open -> Open a first file
  - File -> Open -> Open a second file
  - Dbl click on Libre Office launcher button, the "Windows Overview" is shown

But it does not work when the user opens multiples documents with Nautilus :
  - Open Nautilus
  - Open a first ODF document
  - Open a second ODF document through Nautilus
  - Dbl click on the Libre Office launcher, the first Libre Office window is
focused

I don't know if it is a full Unity related bug since if I start to
instance of Firefox from two terminal the "windows overview" is well
  shown.

Trying to restore (unmaximize) a maximized window, as in this test case:
  http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Applications/Unity/Touch/WinMaximizeRestore
Initiation mode (via 3-finger tap) is not possible on maximized windows. The
seems to prevent any geture-based method for unmaximizing a window.
Traditional methods for unmaximizing the window work fine: clicking the
maximize button in the title bar to toggle the maximization and dragging the
title bar down also correctly unmaximizes the window.

  Release Ubuntu 12.10 (Radeon)

Nautilus fails to be in maximized state.

  Follow the below steps:
  #. Open the display panel
#. Set a resolution lower or equal to 1024x600.
#. Open the ccsm and change the automaximize-threshold option to 20
(experimental-tab of unity-plugin).
#. Open nautilus, that usually doesn't start maximized

  Expected result:

The window should be in the maximized state.

add-on display card/Etronix 1701B 17" 1280x1024 LCD display
Natty beta download from 6 April 2011
Presently operating on same boot CD after checked for errors in disk, using
the motherboard ATI Radeon Express 200 display driver.
I have had problems in the past because the Etronix display card doesn't
correctly report an EDID.

When I tried to boot with my 'normal' nVidia display card in the
system on the Natty beta CD burned from a download from Ubuntu.com,
everything seemed to operate normally until I got to the desktop
display. I just used the defaults, did not try to download
proprietary drivers, indeed didn't touch the keyboard after beginning
  the boot from the CD.

At the desktop, the display would show for a second, then go black for
a second, cycling endlessly. The only variation was that the display
when showing the background of the desktop would sometimes show the
Unity menu, sometimes the top bar, sometimes just the background, in
no sequence that I could determine, although I left it running for
about 30 seconds to see if it would stabilize. USB keyboard and mouse
had no effect. I got out by turning off the power.

Any further information which I can supply?

  Expired
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I'm not sure of the correct terminology (or where this bug should be
filed) so feel free to update this to make it more understandable.

Basically, the problem is that dragging a window (in this case Deja-
Dup Restore dialog) to the right-hand side of the workspace in order
to snap it to the side of the screen (i.e. the blue box appears and it
nicely fits in on the right hand side), causes the dash on the other
workspace of the same level to auto-hide needlessly.

If you look in the screenshot, you will see on the top right hand workspace
the Deja-Dup restore dialog, snapped to the right of the workspace. In the
workspace to the left of that is a Firefox window. The dash on that workspace
automatically stays in its hidden state even though the firefox window is in
the middle well away from it.
Moving the Deja-Dup window off the right hand edge causes the Dash to remain
open.

  Does that make sense?

What information do you need from me to help debug and fix this?

I noticed this primarily when docking/undocking, but it seems to be
even easier to reproduce: it happens if I just change the monitor
  resolution up.

I put a fullscreen Thunderbird in my upper right workspace, a couple
of other apps in my top left, viewing my top left, I used the Monitors
app to lower the screen res, and then raise it back again. On the

On the
raising, my Thunderbird moved into the upper left workspace.

Bug description:
While I reported this on Bug #751605, I think problem with resizing is
  different thing.

I have dual monitor setup with laptop on bottom and external monitor over the
laptop.
When I try resize any window on my bottom screen it crashes. Even when I add
seccond tab in Terminal, and window is automatically expands to fit the tabs
bar, it crashes after that.

I have to move that window to my upper screen, resize, add tab, and
then move it back to lower monitor.

I was poking around on the above unflipped image and noticed some
weird permissions. Because its unflipped, I am not going to list
everything, just ones that definitely seem wrong.

/run is currently (it should be 0755):
  /run drwxrwxrwt root root

/etc is currently (it should be 0755):
  /etc drwxrwxr-x root root

These directories have the SGID bit set, which might intentional (maybe
because of the lack of full-udev?) for controlling ownership of the files in
these directories, but I think it is worth bringing up:

Title:
[Studio1747, IDT 92HD73C1X5,playback] volume slider problem - Slide to
bottom and sound stays off even when slider moved up again

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
The Audio Mixer panel widget slider (current version) has no "mute"
checkbox. The 12.04 version had a mute checkbox in addition to the
  slider.

When the slider is moved to the bottom, everything is muted: Master,
Headphone, Speaker, PCM. Move the slider up and only Master is
  unmuted.

My computer has three hardware buttons for audio. The mute/unmute
mutes but never unmutes. Same issue.

  Known problem: http://askubuntu.com/questions/397819/ubuntu-13-10-and-
  xfce4-no-sound-at-all

With 2012.04 I could just uncheck the mute button and things were back
to normal. Now I need to open Audio Mixer and unmute everything.

(It also appears I need to unmute the Headphones to hear sounds from
  the internal speakers.)

As someone who works in an environment where I regularly need to mute
  this behavior is very annoying.

  1) The volume sliders should never mute.
  2) There should be a mute checkbox.
  3) The unmute options should unmute everything which was muted.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1301015] Re: Networking does not restart

2014-10-31 Thread Joshua
This is ridiculous to see this is still an issue. I ran an update on a
couple farms (that were staged in a lab). Now my networking scripts that
I had *FIXED* are now overwritten... I now have 300+ servers that don't
do anything with an init networking script. If this script is an issue,
then please leave it out. The community will create their own patches.
But more importantly, if this script was disabled purposefully (note the
fix below) why was it overwritten by changes that don't do anything?

Can someone please post a link to where this decision was made? It's one
thing if you want to disable this for desktops. It's an entire other
issue for disabling for headless servers.

And why is there an init script that does nothing anyway? This makes no
sense. An init script that sill exists I assume are "for legacy
purposes" that is purposely broken? This is years in reverse to proclaim
the OLD way for bouncing the network is now the "documented way." This
breaks the motto of Ubuntu : Linux for Humans.

For those humans that still want to fix it (if you haven't done it already).
Edit the script and go down to the arg switch... Comment out anything like the
following...
   if init_is_upstart; then
   exit 0
   fi

Make it like...

# Why did you do this?
#   if init_is_upstart; then
# exit 0
# fi

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1353013] Re: Popping/Crackling sound when playing audio in Ubuntu 14.04

while this is happening, I see "Headphone Output" rapidly appearing
and then disappearing in the "Play Sound Through" section. The
appearance and disappearance of "Headphone Output" coincides with the
popping and crackling of the sound.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that my Nvidia
card has a built-in HDMI card that might be interfering with my
  onboard sound:

  $ cat /proc/asound/cards
   0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xf722 irq 54

HDA NVidia at 0xf708 irq 55
  cat /proc/asound/modules

  Obviously blacklisting "snd_hda_intel" in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf won't work, because it then disables
all sound (both onboard and nvidia are listed as snd_hda_intel).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1353013] Re: Popping/Crackling sound when playing audio in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-10-31 Thread Sergio Benjamim
I'm having this issue too in xubuntu 14.04.1. It often happens when I'm
using Alsa, and it is random, sometimes audio works well but then all of
a sudden it gets this repeated popping/crackling sound.

When in the normal audio, top shows pulseaudio with 3~5% of CPU usage
and pavucontrol with 9~10%, and pavucontrol is like the attach picture.

Popping/Crackling sound when playing audio in Ubuntu 14.04

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When listening to audio (pandora internet radio, youtube, etc.), I get
a repeated popping/crackling sound. When I look at the sound settings
while this is happening, I see "Headphone Output" rapidly appearing
and then disappearing in the "Play Sound Through" section. The
appearance and disappearance of "Headphone Output" coincides with the
popping and crackling of the sound.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that my Nvidia
card has a built-in HDMI card that might be interfering with my
  onboard sound:

  $ cat /proc/asound/cards
   0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xf722 irq 54
   1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf708 irq 55
  cat /proc/asound/modules
   0 snd_hda_intel
   1 snd_hda_intel

  Obviously blacklisting "snd_hda_intel" in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf won't work, because it then disables
all sound (both onboard and nvidia are listed as snd_hda_intel).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1240848] Re: ~/.cache/upstart takes up around 70GB of space due to unity and mediascanner

2014-10-31 Thread maurus
Same problem, also unity7.log is the culprit.
It is filling with:

_xgeWireToEvent: Unknown extension 148, this should never happen.

I am running an upgraded 14.10.

I'm not entirely sure if this is related to upstart as I had removed
logrotate package because of a conflict.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1387163] Re: 'Show Desktop' on launcher crashes compiz for any Gtk-Headerbar app when using any third party Gtk(3.12) theme (Utopic/Vivid)

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is happening for any gtk-3.12 theme which has proper support for
  gtk-headerbar.

  How to reproduce on Utopic:

  1. sudo apt-get install Numix
  2. sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool
  3. change Gtk theme to Numix
  4. Open any app with Gtk-Headerbar (& NOT directly patched by Ubuntu) like
gnome-tweak-tool, gnome-system-log
  2. enable show-desktop on unity launcher
  3. Click on show-desktop first time. it will show desktop.
  4. Click on it again, it crashes compiz & sometimes does not recover from it.
Users have to fallback to TTY & force restart lightdm.

The problem also occurs for any headerbar app from Gnom3 ppa (for
  example gnome-contacts, baobab, gnome-maps).

  Attached crash file from /var/crash/compiz.

Note: Compiz on other desktop shell/session works relatively well. For
example in Gnome-Flashback-Compiz session it doesn't happen.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1388289] [NEW] apport doesn't tell the name of the binary or package which crashed before privileges are gained

2014-10-31 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

into a mainline kernel which caused a dkms to fail in dpkg and you know that
you don't want to report this because you checked the logs evaluated the

Popping/Crackling sound when playing audio in Ubuntu 14.04

Bug description:
When listening to audio (pandora internet radio, youtube, etc.), I get
a repeated popping/crackling sound. When I look at the sound settings
while this is happening, I see "Headphone Output" rapidly appearing
and then disappearing in the "Play Sound Through" section. The
appearance and disappearance of "Headphone Output" coincides with the
popping and crackling of the sound.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that my Nvidia
card has a built-in HDMI card that might be interfering with my
  onboard sound:

  $ cat /proc/asound/cards
   0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xf722 irq 54
   1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf708 irq 55
  cat /proc/asound/modules
   0 snd_hda_intel
   1 snd_hda_intel

  Obviously blacklisting "snd_hda_intel" in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf won't work, because it then disables
all sound (both onboard and nvidia are listed as snd_hda_intel).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1372665] Re: apport reports suspend/resume failure twice on boot (apportcheckresume)

I'm unable to recreate the original bug report in Trusty. There is only
one crash file after proceed with the test case.

  2) reboot
  3) observe two susres named crash reports in /var/crash/

With the version of apport from trusty-proposed you will only have one
  crash report in /var/crash.

Something has regressed to cause my laptop to not resume from suspend. But
in addition, this has exposed a bug in apportcheckresume, which is reporting
the resume failure twice in a row.

  $ ls -l /var/crash/susres.2014-09-22_15\:00\:53.7*.crash

As I certainly did not have two resume failures within a second of one
another, I think this is an apportcheckresume bug.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1388279] [NEW] suspend hangs when unloading module

2014-10-31 Thread Jürgen
Public bug reported:

a few user report problems after upgrading to 14.10. After resume or supend the
touchpad is dead.
un-reloading hid_multitouch solves the issue.

however putting the module name into 00sleep_modules prevents sleep mode

real hassle to beginners from what I've noticed: Many USB WiFi drivers
will connect to an access point like usual and after long periods of
inactivity on the network combined with user inactivity on the PC
alone is when this problem appears to arise: The WiFi disconnects and
does not connect again to the same hotspot using the same USB WiFi
dongle unless the computer is restarted or reset, and a lot of the
time, that doesn't immediately stop this error and even if so, the
computer will disconnect yet again not too long from then.

And why does this happen? It puzzles me. Maybe it's the USB chipset
inside the WiFi dongle, or maybe it's a communication error between
the Linux kernel and the automated firewall systems integrated in most
routers and base stations today, it's hard to say. What I know is that
this doesn't just happen on my computer, testing done by myself on
several other computers in different locations using different WiFi
hardware on Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, or derivatives thereof gets
the exact same result as I am experiencing now.

I have gone digging through Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint forums to
try and find the "cure" patch for my computer or router and the answer
as to why this is happening, and the best answer I could find is that
within my system's WiFi Settings, I need to set the BSSID of the
hotspot I am current using as the MAC address of the router which that
  hotspot is transmitting.

Upon setting my BSSID to a clone of the Router's MAC address followed
by a system restart, I noticed instant improvement when it comes to
connection reliability, speed, and time to connect, yet after days of
having that MAC as the BSSID, things went back to the usual chaos of
an unreliable connection that no other device within the household has
encountered, not even Android telephones and tablets that use much of
the same underlying Linux code. I performed restarts, updates, more
updates, resets, and even more derivatives of Debian or Ubuntu and
this is still more of an issue than ever.

Via further digging and through a process of trial-and-error, I
enabled the "IPv4 is required for this connection" check box along
with changing the BSSID to a clone of the router's MAC address in
hopes it was a compatibility issue with the "newer" IPv6 Internet
Protocol architecture in an attempt to basically 'force' the machine
to get that digital handshake with the router in a more 'legacy' mode
with IPv4, at least to get some connection. That worked for a bit as
well, but didn't hold up just like before.

I am now sitting here at my computer, still experiencing this issue on
and off, currently having the issue stabilized and stalled at the
moment with the "IPv4 is required for this connection" check box on,
NO BSSID set, NO cloned MAC address, and NO "Restrict to Device"
settings opted-in, hoping this time around this combination of
settings will work, but it's a game of trial-and-error for me at this
  point now, like mentioned before.

Has anyone else experienced such terrible connectivity issues only in
Debian-based distributions recently? I have been us

my system's WiFi Settings, I need to set the BSSID of the hotspot I am
current using as the MAC address of the router which that hotspot is
transmitting.

Upon setting my BSSID to a clone of the Router's MAC address followed by
a system restart, I noticed instant improvement when it comes to
connection reliability, speed, and time to connect, yet after days of
having that MAC as the BSSID, things went back to the usual chaos of an
unreliable connection that no other device within the household has
encountered, not even Android telephones and tablets that use much of
the same underlying Linux code. I performed restarts, updates, more
updates, resets, and even more derivatives of Debian or Ubuntu and this
is still more of an issue than ever.

Via further digging and through a process of trial-and-error, I enabled
the "IPv4 is required for this connection" check box along with changing
the BSSID to a clone of the router's MAC address in hopes it was a
compatibility issue with the "newer" IPv6 Internet Protocol architecture
in an attempt to basically 'force' the machine to get that digital
handshake with the router in a more 'legacy' mode with IPv4, at least to
get some connection. That worked for a bit as well, but didn't hold up
just like before.

I am now sitting here at my computer, still experiencing this issue on
and off, currently having the issue stabilized and stalled at the moment
with the "IPv4 is required for this connection" check box on, NO BSSID
set, NO cloned MAC address, and NO "Restrict to Device" settings opted-
in, hoping this time around this combination of settings will work, but
it's a game of trial-and-error for me at this point now, like mentioned
before.

Has anyone else experienced such terrible connectivity issues only in
Debian-based distributions recently? I have been using Linux for ages
now and I feel as if this issue is now just arising within the past
year, 2014.

A HardInfo report generated from my computer is attached to this bug
report. I hope we can figure out a solution soon to get pushed to all
Debian and Debian-like distros soon! Nobody wants a bad connection.

Title:
Can not paste into web forms

Status in Web Browser App:
  Confirmed
Status in “webbrowser-app” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I can copy text from one app, and paste it into the URL field of the
browser, but I don't get a "Paste" option for input fields in the
  webpage itself.

I found this when trying to log into an internal website, where SSO
prompted me to perform 2-factor authentication. I generated the one
time password using CanonicalAuth, and was able to copy it into the
clipboard. However, I was unable to paste it into the 2fa field in
  the web browser.

I could paste it into the URL field, so I know it was in the
clipboard. When long-pressing on the web form input field, I was
given a menu with "Share", "Save" and "Copy", but not "Paste".
