There is a good mix of Native American characters on Yellowstone, the Kevin
Costner series. As diverse as the Caucasian characters.

Re: [TV orNotTV] ABC Renews 8 Scripted Series, Cancels 4 Others

2020-05-22 Thread Doug Fields
Expanding on that, Native Americans feature relatively prominently throughout
the show. The backstory of the lead actor includes the fact that he's a
widower, who's Native American wife was an army doctor who was killed in
Afghanistan. His home life, where his daughter is being raised by his Native
American in-laws while he's on the road chasing bad guys, usually gets a few
minutes of air time at the beginning and/or end of each episode.

Nathaniel Arcand plays the second-in-command of the fugitive chase team on new
CBS series "FBI: Most Wanted". His Native American heritage is displayed
fairly prominently as general background noise and they've already had one
episode this season devoted to a Native American fugitive that they had to
track onto a reservation.

It recently started airing on Alibi in the UK, and I must admit that I think
I'm in. I'm not going to pretend that it's anything too different, but the lead
character is interesting, and it's not a crime of the week series. The show's
tape-deck thing will wear thin after a while - I mean tapes come round
eventually even allowing for it being a C90 compilation. It might be nice if,
beyond the pilot and a couple of exterior pick-up shots, they actually shot the
thing in Portland.

One thing. It would be great if there were a US TV series where the Native
American characters weren't slightly shady (at best) or downright crooked (at
worst) casino owners. I'm wracking my brain to think of the last show where a
major or recurring Native American character wasn't in some way an antagonist
of the lead. Perhaps Lou Diamond Philip's character in Longmire (even if
Philips himself isn't actually Native American), although that series
definitely had the antagonistic reservation police cop. Surely I don't have to
go back to Ed from Northern Exposure?
