[Bug 62917] Re: Real Player will not install and noobs do not know how to install it even with Real Players instructions.

2006-09-28 Thread Eric Butler
Hello there,

The latest version of realplayer is actually available from Canonical's
commercial software repository, please see here:

http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/07/08/introducing-the-dapper-

You should uninstall any existing instances of realplayer before
installing the package from this repository.

Please understand that the ubuntu community can not generally support
commercial software, or software that is not installed using the package
management system.

[Bug 62917] Re: Real Player will not install even with Real Players instructions.

2006-09-28 Thread Richard Johnson
Real Player installs and operates fine here. I think the solution you
are seeking can be found via
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Also, you can enable universe and multiverse repositories, and 'sudo
apt-get install mozilla-firefox' as that will help you out a little bit.

Also if possible, re-word your bugs in the future so they follow the
Ubuntu Code of Conduct (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct). I know
it gets frustrating at times, but no reason to take it out here.
Everyone in the world is a so-called n00b as you put it, so no need to
talk down people who aren't as familiar with computers just yet.

Now migrating from Windows for your first time to Linux will take a
massive amount of patience. For some reason a lot of people think that
Linux is the same thing as Microsoft. Go over the Restricted Formats
page I posted and you should be fine. Any more issues arise we will be
more than happy to help. Thank you!

Solution 2:
- need a program (find or create) that recognizes .dat files and executes the
program with a clicked of the mouse. None of this termial crap if we want the

Solution 3:

that and so would a lot of other people.

the rest is what started this buggy problem ...
Just installed linux ubuntu for the first time been with win since dos. I work
on all my friends computers because I trouble shoot so good.

But I can not install real player and the instructions seem are over my
head, the resources have no examples and the ones that do have examples
they are minumim.

If I can not figure it out after an hour then simpletons will not be
able to either and Real Player is essential software to have along with
PDF and Flash (which installed on its own with one click). There needs
to be a program that see's it is a .dat file and just does the rest with
a click of the mouse. Lets not wait for real player to make it easy we
need to do it. I wish I had the know how or I would do it but alas, that

My fortay is turning all my friends on to Linux and get them away from

Micronas GO7007 Linux Driver

Micronas USA provides a buildable Linux kernel module for the GO7007
which delivers compressed video via the Video4Linux2 API and
uncompressed audio via the ALSA API. The module is available as source
code only, and requires a complete copy of your Linux 2.6.x kernel tree
to build against.

The driver is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2, the
included example code is freely reusable in any application, and the
firmware files required to initialize and program the GO7007 are
redistributable under certain conditions.

[Bug 59841] Re: [edgy] Live CD improperly detects widescreen monitor.

2006-09-28 Thread Matt Philmon
Ok - I'm giving up for tonight. My main PC (which hosts the monitor in
question) is currently only running Windows because the Edgy Knot 2 CD
went so disastrously bad for me on this computer. Knot 3 went great,
however (minus this issue) though I opted at the time to wait on Edgy
Final before risking this box again which serves lots of purposes
including work... hence Windows.

Anyway, after over an hour of playing with modelines from at least 10
different sources I finally gave up and installed fglrx for my ATI X800
card. The 'ati' driver SHOULD work I'd think, but I give up for now. I'm
running the Live CD right now at normal resolution for this monitor
(1680x1050) but only after setting my Modeline, setting the frequency
(60), installing the package xserver-driver-fglrx, running "aticonfig
--initial" and restarting gdm. I will try again tomorrow without fglrx.
Attached is my working xorg.conf (though with fglrx)

[Bug 62386] Re: Grub install fails on intel macs.

2006-09-28 Thread Jordan
Since this still has the 'Unconfirmed' status I would like to add that
this problem is well documented in every tutorial for Dual booting
Ubuntu and OS X on intel macs ( why there hasn't been a bug report
before this I don't know )

From: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=198453

"Grub installation fails at the end, just ignore it (you are going
to install lilo anyway)."

From: http://bin-false.org/?p=17

"The install will fail at the end when it tries to install GRUB"

http://desrt.mcmaster.ca/macbook.xhtml

"You need to use lilo, however as I'm told as GRUB makes an unsupported
BIOS call."

The standard workaround has been either to use LILO ( or elilo although that
requires kernel patches and since it does not use BIOS emulation, will not let
you use some things like the proprietary ATI / Nvidia gfx drivers ). Or to use
a patched version of GRUB AND delete your OS X partition and use an MBR instead
of a GUID partition table ( which means, since you cannot dual boot OSX, you
cannot install any firmware updates ).

These solutions were necessary for a while as patches were still being
made for intel Mac compatibility but they are no longer necessary and
some distributions like Fedora ( I have only heard this claim from
others, I have never actually tried it myself ) install grub normally
from their default installer with no extra patches or configuration
needed on intel macs and Gentoo has documentation on how to use GRUB and
still be able to dual boot OS X http://gentoo-
wiki.com/HARDWARE_Apple_MacBook#Grub but I have not seen any such guides
for Ubuntu.

IMHO this is fairly urgent as it prevents many mac users from installing
Ubuntu.

[Bug 61756] Re: gnome tray icon / notifier not displayed

2006-09-28 Thread foolswisdom
ENV: Edgy / Tomboy 0.4.1-0ubuntu3

I also used Tomboy (0.3.5-1ubuntu3) throughout my dapper experience, and
found this issue problematic at first. I needed my Tomboy!

My guess is that this is not a bug, but the intended behavior. Now, that
I am used to it, I don't mind it.

The Panel applet seems to be intended to replace the "tray/notifier icon". The
applet in my panel seems to be in a running state
mono /usr/lib/tomboy/Tomboy.exe --panel-applet
--oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:TomboyApplet

My theory seems to be supported by the image in the Edgy Eft/Beta wiki page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyEft/Beta#head-e5bb3ad65cac0cba8ea382569755ff7b71041bb1

When I first run tomboy from Deskbar it gave me a scary message about 0
of 0 notes migrated. It was an awkward upgrade experience for me, but
Tomboy was only a universe package in Dapper.

[Bug 59841] Re: [edgy] Live CD improperly detects widescreen monitor.

2006-09-28 Thread Matt Philmon
Here's the one from Edgy Beta Live CD Desktop Installer. The only
available resolution under System-Preferences-Screen Resolution is
800x600.

I'm going to test this install anyway, so I'll run the install, fix
xorg.conf to work for me, and then attach it as well.

It happens that those run in the same script, but this does of course put a
lower bound on the shutdown speed.

[Bug 62891] Re: RealTek ALC260 Sound Card on Dapper + Internal Microphone

2006-09-28 Thread Andrew Ash
Getting everything on every laptop to work every time is a very
difficult process, but Ubuntu has come a long way since it started.
Let's go over what's not working still. Here's how I'm interpreting the
problems you've mentioned:

1. Sound:
  a. sound card is muted on boot by default
  b. master volume changes headphone volume, not speaker volume
  c. internal microphone isn't working, but external does
2. Wireless:
completely non functioning: regressed from Dapper
3. Screen:
defaults to 1024x768, should be 1280x768 without using 915resolution

Is that correct?

There is a wiki entry on this model laptop at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/FujitsuLifebookP7120 The
tester there did not seem to have any problems with the wireless or the
sound. Maybe you could try contacting him to see if he could explain
how he got these working.

And also, is all of this not functioning under a LiveCD or an installed
version? Try booting from the Edgy Beta disc and see if the problems
persist.

Thanks for helping make Ubuntu better.

[Bug 62299] kaffeine interferes with sticky keys

2006-09-28 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kaffeine

Edgy, Gnome.

Enable sticky keys (a keyboard accessibility feature). Watch a movie
with kaffeine. After a few seconds, your shift key becomes "locked".
This causes unexpected behavior where the keyboard and mouse seems to
react strangely without apparent reason (until you realize that the
shift key is locked).

I guess the reason for the bug is the following: in order to prevent the
screensaver from starting, kaffeine simulates the repeated press of the
shift key. But, with sticky keys, pressing the shift key twice locks the
shift key.

Kaffeine should therefore use another technique to disable the
screensaver. The current techique interferes with sticky keys.
