[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup
I replaced my Ubuntu Gutsy AMD64 bit system for the Ubuntu Gutsy i386 almost 1 month ago. Its working perfectly. Virtualbox, games, java, flash etc, etc. Perfect. This computer is running almost all of the time. When I was using the Ubuntu 64 bit I had so many crashes... It seems Ubuntu 32 bit has not the same freeze crash lockup problem. Not with my hardware. [Bug 113607] Re: screen corruption in vertical taskbar with background image
Fresh install of Gutsy Kubuntu from a DVD and this problem still occurs. Everything is default, I have simply dragged the default kicker from the bottom to the left side of the screen and am getting the same issue as described above. I switched to Kubuntu because Gnomes support for vertical kickers is really bad, and I prefer them on widescreens with low vertical resolution as you get on laptops. Shame that this is happening, well I guess we just have to hope a developer with a passion for vertical kickers gets around to looking into it. [Bug 179170] Chinese file name is not shown on mounted External Hard Disk
Public bug reported: After I mount my portable Hard Disk, all the files with Chinese file name cannot be shown in the dolphin manager, and I cannot access any of above files in any mannaer. This phenomenon only happened when I access the NTFS file system. The FAQ in ntfs-3g give us the following hints: ---http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#locale- Why can't I see all filenames with national characters? or Why do I get Skipping unrepresentable filename (inode X) ... messages? This means that your operating system (OS) doesn't have the correct language specific settings (locale, LANG variable, LC_ALL, etc) thus some filenames can't be converted to your language and won't be visible. The reason can be: The locale setting wasn't configured during installation. Not the correct locale was configured. The configured value doesn't exist on the system. The OS configures the setting in a too late stage during the boot process, only after the NTFS volume was already mounted. - I wish this issue could be resolved as soon as possible, because accessing Chinese files on a External Hard Disk is essential for me to use Kubuntu. [Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume
I can confirm that suspend works fine with kernel 2.6.24-2-generic (ie Hardy's kernel) using an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 card. But like E_rulez found, resume fails. The PC starts resuming, turning on screen etc, and then freezes at some point - on one attempt I got as far as trying to log into a console using CTRL-ALT-F2, but it froze before asking me for my password. I tried both Catalyst 7.11 and 7.12, with the same result. It is interesting to note that fglrx's compiz performance is *much* smoother under 2.6.24. However, the open-source radeon driver also run smoother under 2.6.24. I can even run Google Earth at acceptable speed (with compiz on) using the open-source driver! On 2.6.22 it flickers horribly and rotates the globe extremely slowly. -- [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/121653 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 50214] Patch to fix NetworkManager + ndiswrapper back to pre-15 state
Okay so to answer some of my own questions... It appears that the change to AP_SCAN 1 for hidden networks was deliberate, but this very change is exactly what broke NetworkManager + ndiswrapper. I've attached a patch that checks for ndiswrapper and uses AP_SCAN 2 if it finds it. Unfortunately it still does not fix hidden network auto-detection, but at least you can connect to hidden networks using the Connect to Other Wireless Networks... option... which you couldn't do with -15, -16, or -16.7.10.0 using ndiswrapper. Which leads me to a very irritating point... Mark Ferguson's post on 10/23 pointed out that there was a problem with Alexander Sack's patch, which totally broke ndiswrapper with hidden networks. Mark described exactly what the problem was and exactly what was needed to fix it (change AP_SCAN 1 to AP_SCAN 2 for ndiswrapper). Over two months later, being frustrated that the problem is going unnoticed, having never modified a Debian package before or even looked at the source for NetworkManager, ndiswrapper, or wpa_supplicant before...I was able to come up with a patch for this in a matter of hours. I think anyone who had been working with this code could probably have done this in five minutes. I hate to be complaining, and I know that this is a community project and is enhanced by people in their spare time and all that stuff... but seriously guys... what is going on? network-manager is a rather significant package that has become central to Ubuntu's functionality. [Bug 179173] Some remote keys need configuring for ALL remotes
Public bug reported: Superm1 asked me to log a bug report to the effect that some keys on ALL remotes don't yet work. This would serve, he says, as a reminder that the work needs to be done! As an example - I use a Hauppauge pvr150 card (not MCE) and the later silver remote with the coloured buttons in a line at the bottom. The main keys associated with running a PVR work fine (those in the centre area - up/down, back/forward, and all those associated with recording, skipping etc). The ones that don't work are all those at the top such as Guide, TV, Video, Music, Pictures, Radio and Go. Also, none of the coloured buttons at the bottom do anything. You might note that all these buttons work in GBPVR, and Mediaportal - is it possible to copy over something from there? I'm only a newbie at all this so can't help much further, but will test any simple stuff (like amending the lirc etc) if you want. ** Affects: mythbuntu-lirc-generator (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Some remote keys need configuring for ALL remotes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179173 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 32561] Re: Pango-enabled firefox is much slower
I am seeing this on 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, Firefox 2.0.0.11, and it showed up in a very nasty way. I have an e-mail (see attachment) with lots and lots of text (data files). Opening this e-mail in its original context -- Yahoo mail with its CSS and JS and tables -- caused the browser to effectively hang. It remained non-responsive and at 100% CPU for over 5 minutes. The sanitized version does eventually render, but takes over a minute on my computer. In contrast, with pango disabled (I started with mozilla.com's stock builds, then tried the MOZ_PANGO_DISABLE=1 hack, both work fine), the original e-mail renders in about 15 seconds. The sanitized version renders in about 3. So, using Pango is over 20 times slower for me! On the other hand, the font rendering without Pango does not match the rest of the system (fonts are different/larger; some are badly hinted). So, it's ugly without Pango, and unstable (yes, unstable, because such a hang makes me kill the browser) with. :( Can I do something to help get this fixed? ** Attachment added: Sanitized e-mail with massive performance problems. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11088176/firefox-performance.html.gz -- Pango-enabled firefox is much slower https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32561 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 179175] file copy in nautilus loses data without warning user
Public bug reported: Nautilus fails to provide error messages to user indicating that a file copy has failed, leading to data loss. It appears that Nautius stops a copy operation when initiated from the right-click context menu 'Copy' option if an error occurs without informing the user that this is the case. This is particularly a problem if the user is copying large directory trees and somewhere in that tree is a folder that has permissions that prevent the user from traversing into that directory. The entire copy will fail silently and the user will be left with an incomplete copy but not necessarily aware of this. This is critical if they are relying on the nautilus browser for backup. To reproduce this problem: 1. Open a terminal 2. ensure you are in your home directory and are a normal, non-root user 3. enter the following commands: 4. 'mkdir test' 5. 'cd test' 6. 'mkdir cancopy1 cantcopy cancopy2' 9. 'touch cancopy1/stuff1.txt cancopy2/stuff2.txt cantcopy/stuff3.txt' 10. 'sudo chown -R root.root cantcopy' 11. 'sudo chmod 700 -R cantcopy' 12. From nautilus as the same non-root user, open the test directory and select the three directories created above (cancopy1, cantcopy, cancopy2). 13. Select 'copy' from the right-click context menu. 13. Select 'paste' from the right-click context menu while over the desktop background (to paste to the desktop). 14. You will see that the cancopy1 and cancopy2 directories may or man not be successfully copied over (depending on order in which nautilus copies files) but the cantcopy directory will not and there will be no indication to the user that a copy has failed. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- file copy in nautilus loses data without warning user https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179175 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 49524] Re: Removal of ubuntu-desktop needs a stronger warning
ubuntu-desktop was already changed in Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy, October 2006) so that many of the default packages, icnluding the one you mention above, can be removed without disturbing the metapackage. But there should be much, much more of such packages, who can be removed without disturbing the metapackage! For example, there are so many packages which have real good or better alternatives, or are heavily depending on the users liking. For example, there are many people who absolutely favour Gnome as their desktop, but thinking that Evolution really sucks as a mail client, at least when it comes to filtering etc., and on stability. (Evolution crashes very often..) So when someone wants Thunderbird instead Evolution (because he uses it also on Windows and it is more stable than Evolution), Kopete instead Pidgin (because of the missing Webcam feature in Pidgin aka Gaim), and Tomboy, the ressource-sucking (because of mono?) notes client completely deinstalled, he cannot do without harm his ubuntu-desktop. [Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume
AFAIK everything has been said since a long time. Either the kernel configuration has to be changed or the fglrx (closed source) driver from ATI/AMD has to be changed. I am still wondering why the kernel configuration is not changed as I guess there are really many ATI gfx chipset users out there with laptops. Is there a reason for that? Meanwhile you could fix the standby issue it by a) Changing from SLUB to SLAB in the kernel konfiguration and rebuild the kernel (and of course all the restricted modules). For me a good starting point was http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_(Gutsy_Gibbon)_7.10_on_a_ThinkPad_R60 (with the additional change from SLUB to SLAB) but you should understand what you are doing before you start on it... b) use the radeonhd driver (which I was not able to manage, but it sound not too promising right now) c) use unaccelerated drivers (which is really a pain) So, I went out for a) and everything works fine since then. Of course I have to pin now all kernel related stuff until the issue is solved in gutsy or hoary or whatever... [Bug 97552] Re: Gnome closing splash screen doesn't match the desktop being used
I can confirm this bug. Its not really nice on the eyes and might confuse new users. Perhaps there should be an question like the question for GDM or KDM, for the splash screens - which flavour someone would like to use. Another thing could be a dialog in the preferences where someone could switch that - and, which I would appreciate very much, a graphical dialog to switch it off completely and instead switch on verbose text messages. Also the support of text messages while the splash screen is on should be activated - because if the computer does nothing, noboby can find out why. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage the problem seems to reside in package gdm. This phenomenom came to me along with some updates to GutsyBeta, I thought it was due to an update of xorg. Additionally, occasionally the user desktops also start with that ugly resolution.
