[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

2007-12-29 Thread Jerson
I replaced my Ubuntu Gutsy AMD64 bit system for the Ubuntu Gutsy i386 almost 1
month ago. Its working perfectly. Virtualbox, games, java, flash etc, etc.
Perfect. This computer is running almost all of the time.
When I was using the Ubuntu 64 bit I had so many crashes...
It seems Ubuntu 32 bit has not the same freeze crash lockup problem. Not with
my hardware.

[Bug 113607] Re: screen corruption in vertical taskbar with background image

2007-12-29 Thread psylem
Fresh install of Gutsy Kubuntu from a DVD and this problem still occurs.
Everything is default, I have simply dragged the default kicker from the
bottom to the left side of the screen and am getting the same issue as
described above.

I switched to Kubuntu because Gnomes support for vertical kickers is
really bad, and I prefer them on widescreens with low vertical
resolution as you get on laptops. Shame that this is happening, well I
guess we just have to hope a developer with a passion for vertical
kickers gets around to looking into it. For now the workaround described
above will suffice.

[Bug 179169] clamav-milter init script doesn't check for existing process

2007-12-29 Thread Matt Cyber Dog LaPlante
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clamav-milter

The init script for clamav-milter doesn't check for existing clamav-
milter processes as of version 0.92~dfsg-0build1. As a result, it's
possible to run the init script 'start' multiple times successively and
spawn multiple daemons running at once. The would seem ill-advised,
especially given that file-based controls such as sockets and pid files
are in use by default.

[Bug 179170] Chinese file name is not shown on mounted External Hard Disk

2007-12-29 Thread Dang Kang
Public bug reported:

After I mount my portable Hard Disk, all the files with Chinese file
name cannot be shown in the dolphin manager, and I cannot access any of
above files in any mannaer. This phenomenon only happened when I access
the NTFS file system.

The FAQ in ntfs-3g give us the following hints:
Why can't I see all filenames with national characters? or
Why do I get Skipping unrepresentable filename (inode X) ... messages?
This means that your operating system (OS) doesn't have the correct language
specific settings (locale, LANG variable, LC_ALL, etc) thus some filenames
can't be converted to your language and won't be visible. The reason can be:
The locale setting wasn't configured during installation.
Not the correct locale was configured.
The configured value doesn't exist on the system.
The OS configures the setting in a too late stage during the boot process,
only after the NTFS volume was already mounted.
-

I wish this issue could be resolved as soon as possible, because
accessing Chinese files on a External Hard Disk is essential for me to
use Kubuntu. Without this functonality (in a convinently way) I cannot
do many of my work using Kubuntu.

  2. edit /etc/default/spamassassin to read CRON=1
  3. edit /etc/spamassassin/local.cf to read use_bayes 0
- 4. wait until the cronjob runs (*/3:18)

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-12-29 Thread Rocko
I can confirm that suspend works fine with kernel 2.6.24-2-generic (ie
Hardy's kernel) using an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 card. But like E_rulez
found, resume fails. The PC starts resuming, turning on screen etc, and
then freezes at some point - on one attempt I got as far as trying to
log into a console using CTRL-ALT-F2, but it froze before asking me for
my password.

I tried both Catalyst 7.11 and 7.12, with the same result.

It is interesting to note that fglrx's compiz performance is *much*
smoother under 2.6.24. However, the open-source radeon driver also run
smoother under 2.6.24. I can even run Google Earth at acceptable speed
(with compiz on) using the open-source driver! On 2.6.22 it flickers
horribly and rotates the globe extremely slowly.

[Bug 50214] Patch to fix NetworkManager + ndiswrapper back to pre-15 state

2007-12-29 Thread David Ward
Okay so to answer some of my own questions...

It appears that the change to AP_SCAN 1 for hidden networks was
deliberate, but this very change is exactly what broke NetworkManager +
ndiswrapper. I've attached a patch that checks for ndiswrapper and uses
AP_SCAN 2 if it finds it. Unfortunately it still does not fix hidden
network auto-detection, but at least you can connect to hidden networks
using the Connect to Other Wireless Networks... option... which you
couldn't do with -15, -16, or -16.7.10.0 using ndiswrapper.

Which leads me to a very irritating point...

Mark Ferguson's post on 10/23 pointed out that there was a problem with
Alexander Sack's patch, which totally broke ndiswrapper with hidden
networks. Mark described exactly what the problem was and exactly what
was needed to fix it (change AP_SCAN 1 to AP_SCAN 2 for ndiswrapper).

Over two months later, being frustrated that the problem is going
unnoticed, having never modified a Debian package before or even looked
at the source for NetworkManager, ndiswrapper, or wpa_supplicant
before...I was able to come up with a patch for this in a matter of
hours. I think anyone who had been working with this code could
probably have done this in five minutes.

I hate to be complaining, and I know that this is a community project
and is enhanced by people in their spare time and all that stuff... but
seriously guys... what is going on? network-manager is a rather
significant package that has become central to Ubuntu's functionality.
And the Broadcom chipset is not uncommon at all (look in Dell laptops,
Linksys wireless adapters, etc...).

[Bug 179173] Some remote keys need configuring for ALL remotes

2007-12-29 Thread arjay
Public bug reported:

Superm1 asked me to log a bug report to the effect that some keys on ALL
remotes don't yet work. This would serve, he says, as a reminder that
the work needs to be done!

As an example - I use a Hauppauge pvr150 card (not MCE) and the later
silver remote with the coloured buttons in a line at the bottom. The
main keys associated with running a PVR work fine (those in the centre
area - up/down, back/forward, and all those associated with recording,
skipping etc).

The ones that don't work are all those at the top such as Guide, TV,
Video, Music, Pictures, Radio and Go. Also, none of the coloured
buttons at the bottom do anything. You might note that all these
buttons work in GBPVR, and Mediaportal - is it possible to copy over
something from there?

I'm only a newbie at all this so can't help much further, but will test
any simple stuff (like amending the lirc etc) if you want.

Sorry Alexander I don't do bug reports every day : where should I double

Have I got to open another bug-report or the click should be somewhere
it is not that simple for me to guess.

There is no .crash file in the crash directory.

Sorry to bother you with this but I've got to learn how to do it : there
are a lot of other bugs I've found and it would be nice to get Ubuntu
ready for the 8.04 release.
Happy New Year

[Bug 32561] Re: Pango-enabled firefox is much slower

2007-12-29 Thread Alexey Spiridonov
I am seeing this on 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, Firefox 2.0.0.11, and it showed
up in a very nasty way. I have an e-mail (see attachment) with lots and
lots of text (data files). Opening this e-mail in its original context
-- Yahoo mail with its CSS and JS and tables -- caused the browser to
effectively hang. It remained non-responsive and at 100% CPU for over 5
minutes. The sanitized version does eventually render, but takes over a
minute on my computer. In contrast, with pango disabled (I started with
mozilla.com's stock builds, then tried the MOZ_PANGO_DISABLE=1 hack,
both work fine), the original e-mail renders in about 15 seconds. The
sanitized version renders in about 3. So, using Pango is over 20 times
slower for me!

On the other hand, the font rendering without Pango does not match the
rest of the system (fonts are different/larger; some are badly hinted).
So, it's ugly without Pango, and unstable (yes, unstable, because such a
hang makes me kill the browser) with. :(

Can I do something to help get this fixed?

[Bug 179175] file copy in nautilus loses data without warning user

2007-12-29 Thread Dan Griffin
Public bug reported:

Nautilus fails to provide error messages to user indicating that a file
copy has failed, leading to data loss.

It appears that Nautius stops a copy operation when initiated from the
right-click context menu 'Copy' option if an error occurs without
informing the user that this is the case.

This is particularly a problem if the user is copying large directory
trees and somewhere in that tree is a folder that has permissions that
prevent the user from traversing into that directory. The entire copy
will fail silently and the user will be left with an incomplete copy but
not necessarily aware of this. This is critical if they are relying on
the nautilus browser for backup.

To reproduce this problem:

1. Open a terminal
2. ensure you are in your home directory and are a normal, non-root user
3. enter the following commands:
4. 'mkdir test'
5. 'cd test'
6. 'mkdir cancopy1 cantcopy cancopy2'
9. 'touch cancopy1/stuff1.txt cancopy2/stuff2.txt cantcopy/stuff3.txt'
10. 'sudo chown -R root.root cantcopy'
11. 'sudo chmod 700 -R cantcopy'
12. From nautilus as the same non-root user, open the test directory and select
the three directories created above (cancopy1, cantcopy, cancopy2).
13. Select 'copy' from the right-click context menu.
13. Select 'paste' from the right-click context menu while over the desktop
background (to paste to the desktop).
14. You will see that the cancopy1 and cancopy2 directories may or man not be
successfully copied over (depending on order in which nautilus copies files)
but the cantcopy directory will not and there will be no indication to the user
that a copy has failed.

[Bug 52667] Re: Thunderbird doesn't support RFC-2369 based Reply-To-List

2007-12-29 Thread Fabian Zeindl
At the moment it's like this:

- In Thunderbird 1.5 with patch applied and EnigMail installed, ReplyToList
works.
- In Thunderbird 2.0 you don't need EnigMail, but:
  * Either you turn on Show All Headers, then you can use ReplyToList version
2.*
  * or you add List-Post to mailnews.headers.extraExpandedHeaders in
about:config, then you can too use ReplayToList version 2.*
  * or you can use ReplyToList version 3.0, where don't need to set Show All
Headers or extraExpandedHeaders, but this version just works with POP and not
with IMAP (yet), which is considered a bug and should be fixed sooner or later.

[Bug 179177] Hal not initialising. I am using 7.04 and Wubi

2007-12-29 Thread Dennis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Using wubi with Ubuntu 7.04 on a 120Gb Hard drive, not partitioned,no other
applications
The first time i installed it, my internal drives were not recognised.
After I updated the drives were recognised but Hardware abstraction layer not
initilasing and my other hard drives are known by sdf1 etc.
I am an Amiga user from way back, a windows XP user now.
I have tried in the past to install Linux of other types but it was a pain to
remove it.
Wubi allowed a simple install in a Hard Drive that I made spare.
Do you think my HAL problem would be cured if I upgraded to 7.10.
Sorry to sound so ignorant, but I do need to know if I should persevere.
XP SP2 Dual Core Pentium, 2GB Ram, ATI Radeon 9600 Graphics card.
4 internal Hard Drives, 3 external (USB ports) Hard Drives.
If Windows thrash drives I do not want to be caught when they pack up, hence
lots of backups to other drives.
Please help

[Bug 49524] Re: Removal of ubuntu-desktop needs a stronger warning

2007-12-29 Thread Markus Majer
ubuntu-desktop was already changed in Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy, October 2006)
so that many of the default packages, icnluding the one you mention
above, can be removed without disturbing the metapackage.

But there should be much, much more of such packages, who can be removed
without disturbing the metapackage!

For example, there are so many packages which have real good or better
alternatives, or are heavily depending on the users liking.

For example, there are many people who absolutely favour Gnome as their
desktop, but thinking that Evolution really sucks as a mail client, at least
when it comes to filtering etc., and on stability.
(Evolution crashes very often..)

So when someone wants Thunderbird instead Evolution (because he uses it
also on Windows and it is more stable than Evolution), Kopete instead
Pidgin (because of the missing Webcam feature in Pidgin aka Gaim), and
Tomboy, the ressource-sucking (because of mono?) notes client completely
deinstalled, he cannot do without harm his ubuntu-desktop.

How many packages are really needed to do a proper upgrade?

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-12-29 Thread stevieh
AFAIK everything has been said since a long time. Either the kernel
configuration has to be changed or the fglrx (closed source) driver from
ATI/AMD has to be changed. I am still wondering why the kernel
configuration is not changed as I guess there are really many ATI gfx
chipset users out there with laptops. Is there a reason for that?

Meanwhile you could fix the standby issue it by

a) Changing from SLUB to SLAB in the kernel konfiguration and rebuild
the kernel (and of course all the restricted modules). For me a good
starting point was
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_(Gutsy_Gibbon)_7.10_on_a_ThinkPad_R60
(with the additional change from SLUB to SLAB) but you should understand
what you are doing before you start on it...

b) use the radeonhd driver (which I was not able to manage, but it sound
not too promising right now)

c) use unaccelerated drivers (which is really a pain)

So, I went out for a) and everything works fine since then. Of course I
have to pin now all kernel related stuff until the issue is solved in
gutsy or hoary or whatever...

Oh and before someone starts to complain about giving non bug related
support in this list here: yes, I know :-)

[Bug 97552] Re: Gnome closing splash screen doesn't match the desktop being used

2007-12-29 Thread Markus Majer
I can confirm this bug.
Its not really nice on the eyes and might confuse new users.
Perhaps there should be an question like the question for GDM or KDM, for the
splash screens - which flavour someone would like to use.

Another thing could be a dialog in the preferences where someone could
switch that - and, which I would appreciate very much, a graphical
dialog to switch it off completely and instead switch on verbose text
messages.

Also the support of text messages while the splash screen is on should
be activated - because if the computer does nothing, noboby can find out
why.

There are so many good examples of doing good splash screens out there.
Especially those who people can see what and if something is happening.

[Bug 179179] Hardy doesn't boot with encrypted filesystem

2007-12-29 Thread hyper_ch
Public bug reported:

Well, after some serious issue with my gutsy system I thought I might
give Hardy a try. I know it's still alpha but I had good experience with
feisty, so I thought why not try.

Well, it seems the hardy has some serious issues with - at least - my
cd/dvd drive BENQ DVD DD DW1620. I couldn't get to boot the DesktopCD at
all, it failed. Also the alternate install cd had some issues. Upon
detecting the cd-drive I had to recheck it 3 times before it was
actually recognised.

Once I setup the encrypted drive and stuff and tried to reboot, I just
get this error message:

[ 59.xxx] hdc: drive not ready for command

This error message appears multiple time on the screen and then nothing
works anymore. I don't even get as far as to provide the password for
the encrypted drive.

However if I leave the drive unencrypted or if I unplug the cd/dvd drive
I can boot Hardy.

[Bug 122039] Re: [Gutsy] unnecessary packages in ubuntu-desktop dependencies?

2007-12-29 Thread Markus Majer
Oh yes, Evolution, this unstable email client.. ;)

I could add much much more, who should be recommends rather than
depending.

This is a bigger issue, I think, and I hope that could be solved in the
next releases.

Because without that, we cannot install here, the desktops we want,
without harming the stability or usabiltiy of our systems caused by the
automatic removing of the ubuntu-desktop.

The problem also causing a many of the (relatively few) bad reviews for Ubuntu:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/sounder/2006-June/007465.html

So it is more important than this bug report reads.

Thanks for your help on this.

[Bug 172584] Re: ubuntu-minimal has weird dependencies

2007-12-29 Thread Markus Majer
This is also with ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-standard.

-minimal and -standard are things that almost any user want to have on their
computers even if you use for example another logger.
(exception: alsa* nobody needs in a server install..)

But some packages in -desktop are really redundant for some people and
they dont want them on their computers.

Hope there will soon be a reaction, there are already 4 other bugs
posted on that issue in general.

[Bug 163090] Re: Login screen runs with different screen resolution than desktop

2007-12-29 Thread Jari J. Lehtinen
I'm having the same trouble along with some others on the ubuntu forums.
My desktops are running [EMAIL PROTECTED], but the login screen remains
[EMAIL PROTECTED], which doesn't look very nice on my monitor(Eizo Flexscan
T662-T).

According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage the problem
seems to reside in package gdm. This phenomenom came to me along with
some updates to GutsyBeta, I thought it was due to an update of xorg.

Additionally, occasionally the user desktops also start with that ugly
resolution. Seems to me that there's something wrong with the hardware
recognition and the system configures the display system with default
settings against settings given in xorg.conf. And remember, this thing
worked fine with Feisty and in the early stages of Gutsy Beta.
