[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set
I'm sure that Denny will have input here, and I'm concious that this question sounds a little like a trap to point out where I have overlooked the reason this would be a problem. So, lets start from first principles... The thing that this thread contends is that each application should not have to independently implement a window location management function itself. This would waste resources, never be fully implemented and would be inconsistent in it's behaviour as well as not globally configurable. It does not I believe, contend that this should happen by magic without any kind of co-operation from the app. If that co- operation needs to be the setting of a parameter (WM_WINDOW_ROLE) which would identify that window so that the window manager could have a reliable point of reference. Firstly, I would suggest that in the window manager configuration... there should be an option which might be labeled Window positioning policy... ( Right next to the click to raise button which has been missing for years now :p ) After that, when the last window of a given role is closed, the window manager would store it's dimensions and location, probably in gconf, although I don't know if there is an abstracted API for storing data which might work with KDE or other environments also. Then when the first window of that type is subsequently opened, perhaps after a reboot... it should be opened with the same dimensions and location as the last one to be closed. (i1f the screen resolution, or number of screens is no-longer the same such that the window no-longer fits on the screen, it should revert to dynamic positioning) I would suggest that other people might like to comment on what the correct behaviour for subsequent windows of the same type which are opened before the first is closed, but I believe that it should be of the same dimensions, and it should be positioned somewhat near, but offset from the original, on the same screen. ~James -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315 Title: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 688117] [NEW] Launcher does not raise minimized windows consistently
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity If I have multiple windows open for a particular application, eg multiple gnome-terminal windows, and I minimize some, but not all of them, either: 1. I cannot access the minimized windows via the launcher until I minimize all windows for this application (this happens when a matching application has focus) 2. upon clicking the launcher the minimized application is unconditionally brought to the foreground rather than having the opportunity to select from one of the several applications (this happens when a non-matching application has focus) Reproducer for #1: 1. launch 4 terminals with 'ctrl+alt+t' 2. minimize one 3. clicking on the unity launcher only shows the 3 unminimized terminals for selection. To get back to the minimized one, I must minimize the remaining three terminals, then click the launcher icon at which point all four are unminimized and brought forward. Expected results: I am presented with a way to choose to bring into focus any of the four terminals. Reproducer for #2: 1. launch 4 terminals with 'ctrl+alt+t' 2. minimize one 3. open firefox such that it is in the foreground and has focus 4. clicking on the unity launcher brings the minimized terminal to the foreground with focus Expected results: I am presented with a way to choose to bring into focus any of the four terminals One way to fix this is in both cases show all of the windows (in the manner Unity uses in #1), with the minimized windows visually different, perhaps slightly grayed out via a semi-transparent image overlay (or something), and let the user pick which to bring into focus. This would provide consistency as well as access to minimized applications. This may be related to bug #677577, but perhaps not. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/688117 Title: Launcher does not raise minimized windows consistently -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Then I've made 2 users. Then I login as one user and switch to the second user using gnome menu (not gdm). (New feature in lucid). When I do Log Out from the second user - video signal disappears and I'm not able to use neither X nor tty to do something with the system. I have Nvidia driver (version 173.14.22) turned on. When I turn it off and do the steps described above - video signal remains, but when I return to the screen of the first user - the brightness of the screen goes very low. (Fade bug in Gnome?) And sometimes I even get black screen with lonely mouse. (The screen is not unfaded). Maybe there are two different bugs? With nvidia driver (when screen is reset). And with gnome unfading when unlocking the screen. MPT, would a pane in a control center be an appropriate place for this? I.e., would it be sufficient for us to design an entry point for the master settings system? [Bug 660746] Re: System (notebook) freze after electric cable is detached in Maverick
Some updates today: I put the hardrive with Maverick into my laptop and installed new updates. Then I removed the power lead and the system crashed. Again. So no progress in solving this bug yet. I started to dig in my system little bit: 1.) I removed the internal WiFi card (based on Intel 4965AGN), then I booted the Maverick, removed the power lead and NOTHING! No crash! But without wifi my laptop is quite useless, so: 2.) I plugged the USB WiFi stick (based on RaLink chipset RT2500USB), removed the power lead and NOTHING! No crash! I have spare internal WiFi card, so I removed the USB WiFi stick and: 3.) I plugged another internal WiFi card (based on Broadcom BCM4315 chipset), booted Maverick, installed restricted kernel drivers, restarted the system and removed the power lead - NOTHING! No crash! Now I started to suspect the Intel 4965AGN WiFi card to be the cause of all the problems. So I removed the Broadcom card and plugged the Intel back. Restarted, removed the power lead and CRASH! So we are closer now, at least in my case. I started to study the logs, I did this before but because of crashes there was nothing. But today I found two pieces of information: The last rows in the kern.log are suspicious: kernel: [ 119.059334] atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xee on isa0060/serio0). kernel: [ 119.059344] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e06e keycode' to make it known. kernel: [ 119.069352] atkbd serio0: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0xee on isa0060/serio0). kernel: [ 119.069360] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e06e keycode' to make it known. ...(my comment - these 4 messages are harmless, they always appear when I remove the power lead)... kernel: [ 121.272191] EXT4-fs (sda1): re-mounted. I also found something interesting in the pm-powersave.log: Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless false: Turning powersave for wlan0 off...Error for wireless request Set Power Management (8B2C) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Failed. /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless false: success. So what's that mean??? What I think happened - gnome power management system detectes that power lead has been removed and tries to force the intel wifi card into some power saving mode. Intel wifi driver probably doesn't recognise the command OR screwes something. Maybe it even crashes the wifi card and the card consequently crashes the PCI-express bus between card slot and northbridge. Why this crashes the whole system I don't know. My suggestion for gnome power management subsystem developers is - please find the way how to blacklist the Intel wifi driver from being pushed into power save mode or better inform the Intel driver developers about the problem. Now I'm going to put back the hardrive with fully operating 10.04. I will wait for some usefull replies. I can bring up gui's from the affected machine (i.e., gnome-system-log, vino-preferences, etc). 2. remote login to the machine via VNC and get a screen; however I then get multiple tserver instances have to kill it. [Bug 688134] [NEW] Save as ... html, uses out-of-date attributes and stuff
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org Hi :) When saving a document in html format it uses old-style and soon-to-be-out-dated tags, attributes and almost everything. For example tags such as B/B instead of strong/strong and BR instead of br /. Tags should be in lower-case for the move to html5. Also tags such as FONT/FONT are being phased out completely to be replaced by elements within p/p. http://www.w3schools.com/tags/deprecated.htm For a list of tags and things that are being phased out this list http://www.w3schools.com/tags/default.asp shows which are deprecated. Expected behaviour: OpenOffice (well, really LibreOffice now) would save things in an up-to-date format that is future proof To replicate the behaviour: 1. Open any document in Open/LibreOffice 2. Go up to the File menu 3. Save As and use the drop-down menu to save as html Many thanks and regards from Tom PS Obviously this was not a problem for me as i was able to findreplace elements with correct modern elements. [Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Alain, I meant Invalid in Upstart, and I'm sorry for the confusion. There is no doubt in my mind that the ssh.conf needs some changes, and should be fixed going back to Lucid. The notion of pidfiles is generally rejected by the upstart community because daemons don't get this right. [Bug 686094] Re: Unity and Compiz do not start
It looks like a segmentation fault that is causing the crash of Unity. More or less I know what that means, but is caused by what?
