I have found that I only experience this bug when I run yelp with no
arguments. If I run yelp with arguments (e.g. "yelp ghelp:user-guide"),
this crash does not occur. Perhaps this bug is related to yelp's attempt
to render the yelp main page (which might explain the similar crash
documented in Bug 644025, where yelp displays "invalid" characters
before crashing).

IMO it's rather lame on part of developers to assume that the user is too 
stupid to understand a phrase "set hardware clock to UTC". Time zones are 
taught in 4th grade or so. Any adult brave enough to use linux is surely 
intelligent enough to understand that option.
Silently setting UTC=yes by default results in inconveniences especially for 
beginners, because most of them will have a different main OS!
Simply put, it's much easier to have this option displayed at install time than 
to spend 2 hours tracking it down, trying to unmolest the hardware clock.

I am suspecting that this bug is only occurring to people who have
either:

(1) Upgraded from an earlier version of Ubuntu, using the update managerOR
(2) Installed onto a machine that already has a /home partition with 
configuration files/folders from a previous version's installation.

I haven't had the problem recur yet, since I installed 10.10 with a
newly created home directory. However, it has only been a week since
I've done this; the problem my recur yet.

Hi! My new Thinkpad Edge 13 just arrived yesterday, so of course I
installed ubuntu immediately (version 11.04). I'm happy to report that
almost everything seems to be working great! ..even the webcam!
However, I'm having the same problem with the internal microphone as
Benjamin. I tried his solutions with these results:

First, I installed the "Crack of the day" drivers as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

Then I tried adding the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

I rebooted (since I've forgotten how to use the modprobe, lsmod, etc
commands to reload modules! ..sadly(?) it has been many years since
I've had to do this sort of thing.)

The result was that I could use the internal mic, however, the headphone
jack was disabled. Even when headphones are plugged into the jack, the
sound still comes out the internal laptop speakers. (I think this was
also Ben's experience.) So, I tried Ben's second solution:

options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad
in the file
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

The result is that I'm back to where I started: sound comes out the
internal speakers, or the headphones when they are plugged into the
jack, but the internal microphone is disabled.

I'm not sure why this worked for Benjamin and not me. I tried comparing
our respective outputs from alsa-info, but I'm afraid I don't really
know what to look for. Well, if someone could suggest something
(anything), I'd be very grateful.

(I'll attach the output of the alsa-info command run on my machine, in
case it helps.)

Intermittently clicking (right or left) on an icon (e.g. me menu) in the tray 
shows a small highlight (with circular corners) around the icon that has been 
clicked but the associated menu does not appear. This appears to affect all 
icons on the top panel as well as any application menu entries that are 
currently on the panel.
The problem persists for an indeterminate period of time (not insignificant, at 
least 1 minute) before 'going away' (i.e. clicking on items in the panel again 
produces a popup menu as per expected behaviour.
The problem seems to be more apparent immediately after login (although I have 
logged in and been able to access them immediately) and persists for a period 
of time. Once it has gone away, it doesn't appear to return for the rest of the 
session.
Occurs using Natty daily build 30/12/2010.
Also began occurring on Natty Alpha after all latest updates were applied on 
30/12/2010.

I have a Dell Latitude D630. With 9.10 and 10.4, Hibernate worked. With
10.10, hibernate will save the configuration and shut down, but hangs on
restart (it is very slow, though). Suspend works flawlessly. I have not
done anything weird with the install. It has a Nvidia graphics card and
I am running the 195 video driver. This has been purported to be a
problem with some installs. I have tried to install the 'hibernate'
package and that did not improve anything. I have read about some
kernels which are better than others, but all of the 10.10 kernels,
through all the updates, I have not found one that will hibernate.
