[Bug 737846] Re: /usr/share/doc/gcc-4.5/README.Debian.gz contains arch-specific patch information, makes it not multiarch-safe
This bug was fixed in the package gcc-4.5 - 4.5.2-6ubuntu5 --- gcc-4.5 (4.5.2-6ubuntu5) natty; urgency=low [ Loïc Minier ] * Rework config/vxworks-dummy.h installation snippet to test DEB_TARGET_GNU_CPU against patterns close to the upstream ones (arm% mips% sh% sparc%) as to also install this header on other ports targetting the relevant upstream CPUs such as armhf. Add a comment pointing at the upstream bug. * Update __aeabi symbol handling to test whether DEB_TARGET_GNU_TYPE matches arm-linux-gnueabi% instead of testing whether DEB_TARGET_ARCH equals armel. Add a comment pointing at the Debian bug and indicating that this is only useful for older dpkg-dev versions. * debian/rules.def: fix "armel" entry to "arm" in list of DEB_TARGET_ARCH_CPUs for Debian experimental GCC 4.5/4.6 libraries. * debian/rules2: drop commented out GCC #42509 workaround as this was fixed upstream in 4.4+. * Change bogus DEB_TARGET_GNU_CPU test on armel and armhf to just test for arm as ths is what the Debian arm, armel and armhf port use. * Rework snippet setting armv7 on Debian armhf / Ubuntu to avoid duplication, as a comment called out for. * Use "arm" instead of armel/armhf in DEB_TARGET_GNU_CPU test when deciding whether to enable profiledbootstrap. * Set DEJAGNU_TIMEOUT=600 on Ubuntu armhf as well. * Fix a couple more uses of armel or armhf against DEB_TARGET_GNU_CPU. * Patched a couple of comments mentioning armel to also mention armhf. * Rename Vcs-* fields to XS-Debian-Vcs-*. * Add patch armhf-triplet-backport, support for arm-linux-*eabi* backported from a patch sent on the upstream mailing-list. [ Steve Langasek ] * debian/rules2: pass --libdir also for stageX builds, needed in order to successfully build for multiarch. * debian/rules2: $(usr_lib) for a cross-build should not include the multiarch dir as part of the path. * debian/patches/gcc-multiarch+biarch.diff: restore the original intent of the patch, namely, that the multilib dir for the default variant is always equal to libdir (the multiarch dir), and we walk up the tree to find lib for the secondary variant. * debian/patches/gcc-multiarch+biarch32.diff: apply the same multilib directory rewriting for biarch paths with multiarch as we do without; still needed in the near term. * Put our list of patches in README.Debian.$(DEB_TARGET_ARCH) instead of in README.Debian, so that the individual files are architecture-neutral and play nicely with multiarch. LP: #737846. * Add a comment at the bottom of README.Debian with a pointer to the new file listing the patches. -- Steve LangasekSun, 20 Mar 2011 23:39:24 -0700 ** Changed in: gcc-4.5 (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/737846 Title: /usr/share/doc/gcc-4.5/README.Debian.gz contains arch-specific patch information, makes it not multiarch-safe -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The linker doesn't know what the key function is, so I doubt it could issue a more accurate diagnostic. In fact, the key function is just a trigger to the compiler to cause it to emit the meta-data for the class exactly once -- and because there the class could be used in multiple compilation units it can never know which one should contain the meta data as any of them could have done. As far as the linker is concerned, there really is no class for A; it's the same as if there was no definition for a global extern variable. After hitting ctrl-f I can then edit files and such. Save them. Everything works. Of course I can no longer connect to the internet through my phone, send files, upload ringtones, use my bluetooth headset, etc. To work around you can remove the USB bluetooth adapter if you use a external one, plug it back in, and launch bluetooth-applet from the command line and it should be working again. It's not the end of the world, but Audacity should be configured to work properly in the default environment. I suggest eliminating Alsa and bluetooth support and have it not try to fight proper daemons handle it as they do a much better job. At least with PA and Bluetooth. I don't know how well Jack supports bluetooth audio devices, but Audacity really should not be allowed to do this sort of thing. I understand that it seems like a nice feature to be able to use a headset outside of Gnome, but it seems to be fundamentally incompatible with having a bluetooth adapter that is able to work with any other device. (In reply to comment #41) > Added note to "current issues" about SVN FFmpeg. How important is HEAD support? The reason I ask is that they have changed things around a bit in the library (on 2010-06-22, my 25th wedding anniversary ;-)) and have "broken" a kludge we had in place to support Unicode characters in file names. It's not their fault at all. Thanks for your tests, Leland. BTW, switching between different versions of FFmpeg in Windows is seamless after applying your attached patch - no need for restart. Excellent! Would still be an ideal "sometime" to have it picked up at once when installed in the expected place while Audacity is open. Interesting about 2). I'll see if I find that on my Linux netbook. Given how slow native exports are for me, how long will faac exports take? Even if 2) is generally true, I don't think it outweighs 3). Your speed difference using faac between M4A and other exports is nearly 3x. I've tested exporting via "M4A files" on Windows 7 x64 desktop using faac/0.6.1 from a copied in 4 minute WAV, then repeated for the same WAV read directly. WMA, FLAC and OGG take about 40 seconds. AC3 takes about 20 seconds. M4A takes about 70 seconds. WAV takes about 12 seconds. No significant differences if source was copied in or not. 1) could still be an issue on slower machines. But here are more tests, exporting a generated 4 minutes mono tone to M4A: Win 7 x64 desktop/0.6.1/faac: "M4A files" - 35 seconds (external program) - 100 seconds Ubuntu 10.10 netbook/0.6/native "M4A files" - 120 seconds (external program) - 30 seconds By comparison here are exports to MP3: Win 7 x64 desktop: "MP3 files" - 20 seconds (external program - lame 3.98.4 ) - 100 seconds Ubuntu 10.10 netbook: "MP3 files" - 25 seconds (external program - lame 3.98.4 ) - 25 seconds All results are repeatable give or take a few seconds. Those differences between Audacity CLI and GUI for M4A and MP3 on Windows, and in the other direction on Ubuntu between Audacity CLI and GUI for M4A don't look "expected" or "reasonable" to me? I thought it might be a difference between our older 0.5.x version and 0.6.1, , but I've proven to myself that's not the case. I've also proven to myself that it's not a case where a file is exported using the native encoder and imported with faad or vice versa. Using a v0.6.1 + faac/faad and the native aac disabled, I exported a 30 second chirp and then imported it. It went out as a mono file and came back in as stereo. This was with no library changes between...just out and in. > > The only time I got the 3 - 4 times slower exports was after I'd imported an > > OGG file. > I never use OGG files so it's not an explanation for me. I used a 10 minute, mone tone for the following. (This is on the Mac) ffmpeg 0.6.1 + faac/faad: 11 seconds to WMA 11 seconds to AC3 28 seconds to M4A(imported as stereo using faad, imported as mono using native) ffmpeg 0.6.1 + native: 11 seconds to WMA 11 seconds to AC3 16 seconds to M4A(imported as stereo using faad, imported as mono using native) I used the "faad" command line tool to read in both native and faac exported files and both of them are reported by faad as 2 channels: /Users/yam/10n.m4a file info: LC AAC599.418 secs, 2 ch, 44100 Hz tool: Lavf52.64.2 /Users/yam/10f.m4a file info: LC AAC599.348 secs, 2 ch, 44100 Hz tool: Lavf52.64.2 I also used the "faac" command line too to create the m4a directly and it also imported as stereo using faad and mono using native aac. So, to summarize: 1) No extreme time differences between m4a and other ffmpeg formats. 2) The native exporter is faster than faac 3) Faac exported files sound better 4) Any file imported with faad gets imported as stereo This was all done on the Mac... (In reply to comment #36) > if everyone is also satisfied, I'd like to go ahead and commit it and move > on to the detection simplification. If you're OK I'd still like to try with SVN FFmpeg, since that gave endless trouble before. I assume you have done this, but since I'm inexperienced there is a chance I could find a problem by doing some something silly. I don't see we can do a "Stereo Tracks to Mono" on an M4A imported via libfaad as it would take too long. But could or should you do some hackage in our FFmpeg code so that it imports "first time" as mono? I think the answer to that is "is this a libfaad bug"? It appears that upMatrix for "implicit signalling of PS" is deliberate, unless the commenting is the bug. Certainly users would prefer if mono AACs came in as mono irrespective of decoder and if so we don't have to release note. To answer that, can you explain more about in what circumstances FFmpeg is tried first and what extensions are involved - is it aac, m4*, mov? And I think OpenFile has a "QuickTime files" or similar filter, correct? The way I see it "should" work is that the current setting of the filter in OpenFile determines what importer is tried first, if there are no "extended import" rules set, or if there are rules but we don't force them to override the filter. However how it works now if you have no rules set is that the "overrides" checkbox in Extended Import Prefs affects matters. The checkbox is unchecked by default (OpenFile doesn't override), so when you go to File > Open, choose the FFmpeg filter and import a WAV, you actually still use libsndfile to import; to force that filter to use FFmpeg, you have to go into Prefs and check the box although its wording "any rules" implies it should be irrelevant if there aren't any rules. So question: should that box be greyed when there are no rules? And if not, shouldn't the box be checked by default? Otherwise, we're contradicting the Manual that says the OpenFile filter forces use of FFmpeg: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=File_Menu#Open... Basically the Manual was correct until LRN changed things so that any import method respected the filter choice or the rules set. Now let's look at the scenario where we import a WAV with a rule set to use libav for WAV. If the check box is checked (OpenFile overrides) and you choose the WAV filter in OpenFile, the WAV imports via libsndfile. OK. Now uncheck the box (OpenFile doesn't override) and choose the WAV filter in import files - the WAV imports via libav. OK. And when you then use Recent Files or drag you also get libav used. I think it's 100% correct the same importer is used irrespective of open method, but some people read that checkbox as worded to mean that "no-override" doesn't apply if you don't use the OpenFile dialog. So second question: can we reverse the logic of the checkbox so it becomes "Force importer order irrespective of filter in OpenFile dialog"? Or short form "Rules override filter chosen in OpenFile dialog"? I think that would remove the confusions people are having here. On the CLI/GUI speed craziness, clearly these two are the problems: * Windows (external program) export is unreasonably slow, any encoder. Start a new bug? * Ubuntu "M4A files" export is unreasonably slow - but not (external program). This is the major reason for the "slowness" part of bug 317. Can it be addressed? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/602934 Title: ffmpeg import/export not working with ffmpeg version in maverick -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 602934]
I have FINALLY figured out, at least for me, why the m4a files would import as mono when the above patch was NOT applied. It basically boils to me being an idiot. When I was originally testing the patch, I'd realized that the QuickTime importer was doing the import, so I reversed the order of these fellas in Import.cpp, forcing the FFmpeg importer to be used instead: #if defined(USE_FFMPEG) GetFFmpegImportPlugin(mImportPluginList, mUnusableImportPluginList); #endif #ifdef USE_QUICKTIME GetQTImportPlugin(mImportPluginList, mUnusableImportPluginList); #endif So, when the patch was applied, all imports would go through the FFmpeg importer and if it was configured to use faad, then the imported audio would be in stereo. If the patch wasn't applied then the imports would be mono since the QuickTime importer was doing it. But, forgetting that I had done this, I thought there was some other heinous problem lurking somewhere in the way Audacity was using FFmpeg. Putting the importer order back the way it was, made Audacity act the same whether the patch was applied or not. With that explained away, I can now say with certainty why the m4as are importing as stereo instead of mono. It has everything to do with the faad library. I found the bit of code in libfaad that is causing the files to be imported as mono. It's really quite concrete. In faad-2.7/libfaad/mp4.c, you'll find this block: #if (defined(PS_DEC) || defined(DRM_PS)) /* check if we have a mono file */ if (mp4ASC->channelsConfiguration == 1) { /* upMatrix to 2 channels for implicit signalling of PS */ mp4ASC->channelsConfiguration = 2; } #endif And this bit of code defined faad-2.7/libfaad/common.h: #define SBR_DEC //#define SBR_LOW_POWER #define PS_DEC #ifdef SBR_LOW_POWER #undef PS_DEC #endif Notice that PS_DEC will ALWAYS be defined since SBR_LOW_POWER has been commented. That means that the channel count will always be changed to 2 if the file only has 1 channel. So, unless measures were taken to defeat this code, all applications using libfaad either directly or via ffmpeg, will always import mono m4a files as stereo. I'm now convinced that the patch works as it should and has not caused any unexplained behavior over the previous 0.5x support. So, if everyone is also satisfied, I'd like to go ahead and commit it and move on to the detection simplification. Now, getting back to the order of the FFmpeg and QuickTime importers... I'd like to leave it with FFmpeg first and then QuickTime. That way Audacity will behave the same on Windows, Linux, and OSX. If QuickTime comes first, then there may be the same kind of confusion that I experienced among the general populace. This would mean a change in behavior and the possibility that FFmpeg would take responsibility for importing a file when the QuickTime importer may be a better selection. However, with the extended import/export option in preferences, the user would be able to override the order if desired, so there's no loss of functionality. (In reply to comment #26) > I have been unable to pin down why M4A imports are silenced. Actually, I no > longer see this, so if y'all can attach a file to this bug that consistently > imports as silence that'd be great. For me, the same file will sometimes import as silence and sometimes not. The silencing was happening every time after applying the 0-6-1 support and import crash patches. After reboot, it hardly happens, but sometimes does. > Heck, if you have a mono file that imports as stereo, please attach that > as well. You gonna love this. I generated a default 30s chirp in Audacity on Win 7 and Audacity on Ubuntu. I exported with (external program) and default ffmpeg -i - %f naming the file as chirp.m4a. Win FFmpeg is 0.5, Ubuntu FFmpeg is the Ubuntu package. The ffmpeg output says it wrote a mono file. The chirp.m4a exported on Ubuntu imports as mono into Audacity on Ubuntu, and most apps see it as mono e.g MediaInfo, but VLC imagines it is stereo. If I import that chirp.m4a exported on Ubuntu into Audacity on Win 7, it imports as stereo. dBPowerAmp and MediaInfo (slightly old version) see it as stereo. QT and iTunes see it as mono. If I drag the chirp.m4a produced on Windows 7 into Audacity on Windows, it imports as stereo. If I drag the chirp.m4a produced on Windows 7 into Audacity on Ubuntu, it imports as mono, and Ubuntu apps see it as mono (or stereo for VLC) as before. I think you will be able to repro it on Windows (and I assume on FFmpeg 0.6.1 too, but I have not tried with 0.6.1 yet). What happens on Mac? > One thing that I did discover is that on 2010-05-14, the native aac encoder > was updated and this caused a tremendous degradation in export quality. I do > not believe this to be an Audacity issue since the ffmpeg command produces > the same results. Agreed, but would still have to be release noted because we will be blamed otherwise. Or could/should we disable Audacity support for the native aac encoder via normal "M4A files" export? I think it would send an appropriate message. > Another thing is that exporting a 10 minute chirp on my system consistently > takes 22 seconds prior to the ffmpeg changes on 2010-04-02. After that date, > exporting the same chirp consistently takes 35 seconds. Again, I do not > believe this to be an Audacity problem since the ffmpeg command produces > nearly the same time difference as Audacity. That is a much less significant difference than that implied by the "3 - 4 times slower" than Audacity export to other formats. Can you test on your system: * How much less than 35 seconds does that file take to export via LAME at the command-line? * How much slower is Audacity GUI export to AAC (using FFmpeg 0.6.1) than to other formats? I wonder (even if it is an FFmpeg issue) if Audacity is making it worse? FWIW I tested M4A encoding in FFmpeg 0.5 versus 0.6.1 (both using libfaac) at the command-line on Windows 7. 0.6.1 is if anything slightly faster, and no quality issues.

Created an attachment (id=125) Just a combination of 0.6.1 support and the import crash fix This is a combined patch that include the 0.6.1 support and the fix for the import crash from bug #317. I have been unable to pin down why M4A imports are silenced. Actually, I no longer see this, so if y'all can attach a file to this bug that consisently imports as silence that'd be great. Heck, if you have a mono file that imports as stereo, please attach that as well. One thing that I did discover is that on 2010-05-14, the native aac encoder was updated and this caused a tremendous degradation in export quality. I do not believe this to be an Audacity issue since the ffmpeg command produces the same results. Another thing is that exporting a 10 minute chirp on my system consistently takes 22 seconds prior to the ffmpeg changes on 2010-04-02. After that date, exporting the same chirp consistently takes 35 seconds. Again, I do not believe this to be an Audacity problem since the ffmpeg command produces nearly the same time difference as Audacity.

For those experiencing slow exports after importing an OGG file, can you try changing "Edit->Preferences->Import/Export->Read uncompressed..." to "Make a copy..." and then exit Audacity, get back in, and try to reproduce the slowness. For me, it no longer occurs. And since the slowness happens with OGG -> OGG as someone else mentioned somewhere (yes...I'm still confused ;-)), it doesn't have anything to do with FFmpeg, so this should probably be a different bug. I think different people may have different issues but I'll be testing soon with this patch + bug 317 patch with Ubuntu FFmpeg and reporting back. I suggest we could use the "Steps to Repro" here as a summary of operational issues with FFmpeg with the relevant bug number listed. We must also test against SVN FFmpeg which could have its own issues. I will "try" and do that later. I tested the patch from comment 10 with the system FFmpeg and it works on my system. Exporting and importing ac3, flac, ogg, wav, wma worked. ogg imports and exports are very slow (bug #311). The m4a export produces a file containing only silence. Should I open a new bug report for it? [Bug 602934]
Also see bug 313 comment 1. Import of any formats (even non-FFmpeg) is generally flaky after applying the patch in comment 10 here. WMA imports will always segfault, but so will WAV, MP3 and FLAC imports (most, but not all of the time). I have to suspect this patch in comment 10, because: * If I use the 1.3.12 Ubuntu-distributed Audacity, which is using the same Ubuntu-distributed FFmpeg as my HEAD version, I can import WAV and MP3 reliably without segfaults; * Having used 1.3.12, this disables FFmpeg in HEAD, after which the problem with WAV and other non-FFmpeg imports goes away.
[Bug 739151] [NEW] dpkg-cross does not do sensible things with multi-arch: same packages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dpkg-cross Running dpkg-cross against the Multi-Arch: same version of libc6 currently in natty does not produce sensible output. Instead it generates a .deb that contains only a large number of iconv .so modules under /usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/include, e.g.: ./usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/include/gconv/libCNS.so I have no idea why it's installing to include. The source location was ./usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gconv/. It might seem that it's not a big deal for dpkg-cross to not handle multiarch packages since multiarch packages can just be installed directly; but since we can't use foreign-architecture build dependencies on the buildds yet, cross-toolchain packages in the archive (such as armel-cross-toolchain-base) need to build using gcc-4.5-source, eglibc- source, etc. and run dpkg-cross afterwards to output their binary packages. So the armel cross-compiler in the archive isn't buildable until this is resolved. I've checked with dpkg-cross 2.6.2 from Debian unstable; the same problem is present there. ** Affects: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Wookey (wookey) Status: Triaged ** Affects: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu Natty) Importance: High Assignee: Wookey (wookey) Status: Triaged ** Tags: multiarch ** Changed in: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Wookey (wookey) ** Changed in: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-11.04-beta-1 ** Also affects: dpkg-cross (Ubuntu Natty) Importance: High Assignee: Wookey (wookey) Status: Triaged ** Tags added: multiarch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/739151 Title: dpkg-cross does not do sensible things with multi-arch: same packages -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello again Moc! Thank you for the feedback. The Ayatana work has generally been moving towards /passive/ notification methods so that the notification does not interrupt your workflow.
