[Bug 992701] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA VIA VT82xx, playback] No sound at all

2012-07-12 Thread Gregor
Similar issue, similar card...

only mine appeared only with kernel 3.2.0-26. worked fine before.
 *-multimedia
  description: Audio device
  product: VT8237A/VT8251 HDA Controller
  vendor: VIA Technologies, Inc.

though i get

hda-intel: spurious response 0x0:0x0, last cmd=0x835000

on boot.

i was able to get the sound back by doing
sudo alsareload -c
sound then works on reboot but when i shut down computer and turn it back up
the issue remains (no sound).
i am not sure if the user that reported this bug has the same card, but the
command might be worth a try.

[Bug 1015041] Re: Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

2012-07-12 Thread JoLa
May be: Installing Xubuntu I used the home-partition of ubuntu. Before I
deleted most of the files and directories meaning that they are relevant
for the unity desktop.

Now I will do it again and leave only those applications, which have
nothing to do with the system. E.g. Firefox and Thunderbird profiles.

2012-07-12 Thread Tom Kaminski
Found this: https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=58211

Which gave me enough information on what needed to be changed in the
rest of the code to make it all work. Attached is a complete patch to

Briefly tested. At least it doesn't seg fault anymore.

Re: [Bug 945749] Re: Mouse pointer jerky on login screen

2012-07-12 Thread sae.area
Hello Jeb E.

could you check the following. With the proprietary driver installed, go into
screen saver mode (or some mode that turns off the screen due to inactivity),
log in from a different machine via ssh and check the CPU load via top.
(alternatively follow the instructions at the following link:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/969860)
I am experiencing the bug 969860 therefore I am staying away from fglrx.

Thank you very much.

[Bug 1014460] Re: Touchpad sometimes not working upon system startup

2012-07-12 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Uploaded to precise-proposed and oneiric-proposed queues; I'll let
another member of the SRU team accept these into -proposed, where they
will build and can then be tested.

[Bug 1023953] Re: Ubuntu-drivers-common breaks PackageKit

2012-07-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Installing PackageKit instead of aptdaemon is going to break software
which expects the WhatProvides() and other plugins to work. We do not
currently have packaged software that does, so removing the Breaks: for
now should be okay.

> If there are features missing in Aptcc, please implement them there,
so all applications using PK can rely on them.

I agree in principle, but I doubt it's a realistic goal. It would mean
to implement all the plugins twice, with the aptcc implementation taking
a lot more effort and getting very little testing (since the standard PK
API implementation in Ubuntu is currently aptdaemon).

[Bug 927515] Re: thunderbird uses excessive cpu power

2012-07-12 Thread David Henningsson
The strace log is a bit long to attach here, but under one minute of fetching
emails, it
 - calls gettimeofday about 200 000 times
 - trying to open different files in /usr/share/mime, 20 000 times
 - trying to open gedit.desktop in different directories, 1300 times

...is this really correct behaviour?

[Bug 668926] Re: can't resolve domain names starting with a dash (minus sign)

2012-07-12 Thread David Grossberg
I took a guess what package this might be. Please change it to the
correct one if wrong.

More tumblr and presumably other sites are going to be affected by this over
time. Following an old RFC that is obviously not being enforced at the server
end is Clearly the wrong behavior for the client. The sentiment behind RFC
1958 section 3.9 applies very well here:
Be strict when sending and tolerant when receiving.

[Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp

2012-07-12 Thread Robert Ancell
** Changed in: lightdm (Ubuntu)
Status: Fix Released => Fix Committed

** Changed in: lightdm
Status: Fix Released => Fix Committed

** Description changed:

- When logged into a graphical session, I get no acknowledgement from who,
- w or last that I am logged in:
+ Impact:
+ Systems using LightDM have no entries in the utmp record for logins, so tools
like 'w' and 'who' do not show LightDM sessions.

- $ who
- $ w
- 16:48:14 up 1 day, 1:08, 0 users, load average: 0.68, 0.83, 0.84
- USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
+ Testcase:
+ 1. Start Ubuntu system
+ 2. Log into session
+ 3. Open gnome-terminal
+ 4. Run 'who' command
+ Expected result:
+ You should see TWO entries (the first is from LightDM, the second is from
gnome-terminal):
+ tty7 -MM-DD HH:MM
+ pts/0 -MM-DD HH:MM (:0)
+ Observed result:
+ You see only one entry:
+ pts/0 -MM-DD HH:MM (:0)

- last only reports tty logins, not graphical logins.
-
- ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 927515] Re: thunderbird uses excessive cpu power

2012-07-12 Thread David Henningsson
Regression or not, it's still an annoying bug.

I'm attaching performance data from my older computer, where this is a
nuisance. In the two minutes I let Thunderbird run, it fetched less than
1000 emails - which means just a few emails per second (which is not
good IMO!).

The latest comment indicates that this would be eCryptfs related - for
the record, I'm also running eCryptfs. Seeing the top perf results, it
looks like they are crypto related, but I don't think this is the only
cause. The fact that it also seems to spend a significant amount of time
in pthread_mutex_lock/unlock also looks like a programming error to me.

[Bug 1024213] [NEW] libexif 0.6.21 and exif 0.6.21 were released to fix various overflows and related issues.

2012-07-12 Thread karma
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

libexif project security advisory
July 12, 2012

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

A number of remotely exploitable issues were discovered in libexif
and exif, with effects ranging from information leakage to potential
remote code execution. The issues are:

CVE-2012-2812: A heap-based out-of-bounds array read in the
exif_entry_get_value function in libexif/exif-entry.c in libexif 0.6.20
and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or
possibly obtain potentially sensitive information from process memory
via an image with crafted EXIF tags.

CVE-2012-2813: A heap-based out-of-bounds array read in the
exif_convert_utf16_to_utf8 function in libexif/exif-entry.c in libexif
0.6.20 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service
or possibly obtain potentially sensitive information from process
memory via an image with crafted EXIF tags.

CVE-2012-2814: A buffer overflow in the exif_entry_format_value function
in libexif/exif-entry.c in libexif 0.6.20 allows remote attackers to
cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via an
image with crafted EXIF tags.

CVE-2012-2836: A heap-based out-of-bounds array read in the
exif_data_load_data function in libexif 0.6.20 and earlier allows remote
attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly obtain potentially
sensitive information from process memory via an image with crafted
EXIF tags.

CVE-2012-2837: A divide-by-zero error in the
mnote_olympus_entry_get_value function while formatting EXIF maker note
tags in libexif 0.6.20 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a
denial of service via an image with crafted EXIF tags.

CVE-2012-2840: An off-by-one error in the exif_convert_utf16_to_utf8
function in libexif/exif-entry.c in libexif 0.6.20 and earlier allows
remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute
arbitrary code via an image with crafted EXIF tags.

CVE-2012-2841: An integer underflow in the exif_entry_get_value function
can cause a heap overflow and potentially arbitrary code execution while
formatting an EXIF tag, if the function is called with a buffer size
parameter equal to zero or one.

CVE-2012-2845: An integer overflow in the function jpeg_data_load_data
in the exif program could cause a data read beyond the end of a buffer,
causing an application crash or leakage of potentially sensitive
information when parsing a crafted JPEG file.

There are no known public exploits of these issues.

AFFECTED VERSIONS

All of the described vulnerabilities affect libexif
version 0.6.20, and most affect earlier versions as well.

SOLUTION

Upgrade to version 0.6.21 which is not vulnerable to
these issues.

[Bug 997900] Re: Wireless is disabled by hardware switch

2012-07-12 Thread William Ranvaud
There are plenty of askubuntu similar issues. (e.g.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/139036/ubuntu-12-04-says-wireless-is-
disabled-by-hardware-switch) and launchpad answers too.

The wireless shuts down and won't turn on again after the switch in
turned on. Proposed solution is to run "rfkill unblock all" from
terminal.

[Bug 1024210] [NEW] package lirc 0.9.0-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script was killed by signal (Killed)

2012-07-12 Thread launchpadmember
Public bug reported:

system crashed during install of kde-full meta-package.
a text mode screen opened up aksing if I wated to configure something that
looked like remote access to my machine without any explanation of what it was.
I decided to kill the process out of paranoia and a crash report was generated
on the next login. So here we are.

The moral of the story?
Don't ask a user if they want to configure remote access. Just assume they
don't wan't it in the first place, and don't even attempt to install it unless
it was specifically requested by the end user.

In my case and to my knowledge I made no such request, and if this was
part of the defalut kde-full meta-package, then it should be removed
unless you want to see more crash reports like this one.

[Bug 993249] Re: [SRU] activemq fails to start on Ubuntu 12.04

2012-07-12 Thread kroq-gar78
Really sorry about that. I've filled out the SRU and will resubmit my
merge request.

** Description changed:

  SRU Request for Precise

   SRU Justification ###

  [Impact]
activemq won't start whatsoever on Precise.

  [Development Fix]
-
+ This is fixed in lp:~kroq-gar78/ubuntu/precise/activemq/sid-merge by merging
with Debian Sid. In the Debian bug report, it was found that "the maven
repositories are created but no files are copied to /usr/share/java". So,
they're created but not put into the package.
+
+ From the Debian bug report:
+ "The following patch adds the necessary --java-lib flag to
+ debian/libactivemq-java.poms for the required repositories
+ activemq-{core,console,run} and kahadb"

  [Stable Fix]
-
+ Because this bug is due to the fact that the JAR's weren't installed through
the package, the only way to fix activemq is to apply the patch attached here
or use the branch lp:~kroq-gar78/ubuntu/precise/activemq/sid-merge and
recompile the source.

  [Test Case]
  1) Install the package 'activemq'
  2) Run the command 'activemq'

With the version in Precise, it will error out with:
  ERROR: '/usr/share/activemq/bin/run.jar' does not exist

  [Regression Potential]
-
+ Minimal as the program doesn't work as it is anyway.

  ###

activemq 5.5.0+dfsg-6ubuntu1 running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

  ---OLD REPORT (MERGE/SYNC-RELATED)---

Please sync activemq 5.5.0+dfsg-7 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

  From debian bugreport:

  Dear Maintainer,

I installed the activemq package (Wheezy, AMD64), but after configuring the
  software it failed to start.
Running the following command gave more information about the problem:
  /etc/init.d/activemq console main

Starting with Console ActiveMQ instance : mainINFO: Loading '/etc/activemq
  /instances-enabled/main/options'
  INFO: Using java '/usr/bin/java'
INFO: Starting in foreground, this is just for debugging purposes (stop
process
  by pressing CTRL+C)
  ERROR: '/usr/share/activemq/bin/run.jar' does not exist

Upon inspection the file "/usr/share/activemq/bin/run.jar" is a symlink
pointing to "/usr/share/java/activemq-run.jar" which does not exist.

Activemq ran fine on my previous i386 Wheezy installation, which I replaced
March 30th by this AMD64 installation. I only now got to installing ActiveMQ
  again.
Therefore I believe this to be a regression from version 5.5.0+dfsg-5 which
ran
  fine.

  Kind regards,
  Steven

[Bug 1016380] Re: apport-gtk crashed with TypeError in _check_bug_pattern(): can't use a string pattern on a bytes-like object

2012-07-12 Thread Edward Donovan
So, this looks like a python3 porting issue. According to comments like
this:

  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5184483/python-typeerror-on-regex

what's needed is to call 're.compile' with a 'b' flag, for bytes. I'm
not familiar with the code enough, to know whether we just can sprinkle
that around in all the places where apport's report.py calls
're.compile'. Does anyone have a good guess? Thanks.

[Bug 1024207] Re: php5-ps segmentation fault on ps_setfont (64bit)

2012-07-12 Thread Tom Kaminski
** Description changed:

php5-ps doesn't work on amd64 based systems. It will throw a
segmentation fault at the ps_setfont() function. I was able to
reproduce on two separate amd64 machines, including directly from a live
CD.From a live CD, here are the steps to reproduce:

  1. Add universe to apt-get sources.list
  2. apt-get update
  3. apt-get install php5 php5-ps
  4. Run command: php ps.php (where ps.php is the attached sample program)

- - When I compiled the example C programs using libps directly, there were no
problems with the same set of functions.
+ - When I compiled and ran the example libps C programs, there were no
problems with the same set of functions.
  - When I booted with a 32bit live CD (12.04), the above steps worked fine.
No segmentation fault.
+ - I recompiled the module using "pecl install ps", and it still seg faulted
on 64bit.

[Bug 1022864] Re: Lucid to Precise upgrade test failed: User settings are not preserved on upgrade

2012-07-12 Thread Martin Pitt
That's just the second half of the test. The first half is setting up
some user config in 10.04:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~auto-upgrade-testing-dev/auto-upgrade-
testing/trunk/view/head:/share/scripts/prepare_lts_user

There is also a corresponding pair of prepare_lts_desktop /
test_lts_upgrade_system.py scripts for some system-level configuration
migration (gdm -> lightdm), but it seems this is succeeding.

Victor, where in the logs does it show the call of the prepare_lts_user
script? This needs to be run before starting the dist-upgrade, i. e. in
the 10.04 installation.

[Bug 1016380] Re: apport-gtk crashed with TypeError in _check_bug_pattern(): can't use a string pattern on a bytes-like object

2012-07-12 Thread Edward Donovan
Once again, I can't make this happen consistently with the same
crashfile. Guessing from the names and times, the last two commenters,
like me, probably had apport crash while reporting bug 1024016. A
second attempt on that crashfile ran without problem. So I guess
there's probably not much use in uploading it.

It looks like it's always terminal logs that apport is handling when it
breaks. Thanks.

Indeed, the shortcut does not work when set to Super+L by hand.

Additionally, the Ubuntu top-right corner menu does not show the updated
shortcut until restart.
