[Bug 1185592] Re: pam_systemd not enabled in saucy upgrade

2013-11-30 Thread proy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1176910 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1176910

I got bit by this bug. I had Fedora 20 Beta installed on my system.
Formatted that partition and installed Kubuntu 13.10. On first boot and
on the LiveCD, everything worked fine. Then did a "sudo apt-get update
&& sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", rebooted and the following things in KDE
did not work:

- Wifi network
- Sound
- Shutdown/restart

The comments here helped and the problem indeed is systemd missing in
pam. However, none of the suggestions worked. Then added the following
line in /etc/pam.d/common-session and everything works:

session optionalpam_systemd.so

My /etc/pam.d has a lot of *.pam-old files. Those files actually contain
the systemd module.

[Bug 1172852] Re: USB keyboard and mouse don't work

2013-11-30 Thread KennyTanigawa
Dee Bee, can you try the following ? :
1. Suspend the PC or laptop
2. Start the PC or laptop
3. Try if you can key in anything

I have a HP Pavilion g4 laptop that I bought last year.
I've been installing few Linux distributions and had the same issue.

In the beginning I was using Ubuntu 12.04 and had no problem.
After I upgraded it to Ubuntu 13.04, I had the same issue as reported in this
thread.
After googling a little, and tried some solutions provided in other threads,
nothing worked.
So I decided to suspend the PC and wake the PC up again, and I found out that I
was able to
use my keyboard.

I am not sure if it will work on your case, but please give it a try.

I also noticed that when I boot and reboot a couple of times, once in a while,
I am able to
use my keyboard... Very funny...

[Bug 831022] Re: avahi daemon erroneously assumes host name conflicts (and causes more trouble then)

2013-11-30 Thread Rene Treffer
I get the same problem on my gentoo box. A simple way to reproduce is adding
"127.0.1.1 hostname"
to you /etc/hosts

It looks like avahi will tread nslookup success that does not map to an
_assigned_ ip of the local host as a conflict. Not sure about secondary
IPs, but I would expect other bugs/reports to be related

[Bug 1256536] Re: xmhtml 1.1.7 source missing src directory

2013-11-30 Thread Graham Inggs
In Makefile, which is used to build the package in Debian/Ubuntu, SUBDIRS is
defined as "lib http examples tools".
My guess is that somewhere along the line 'src' was renamed to 'lib' and
Imakefile was never updated.

As this is a bug in the source tarball and doesn't affect the
Debian/Ubuntu packaging, I'm marking it "Won't Fix", but feel free to
comment further.

[Bug 921889] Re: package ttf-mscorefonts-installer (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128

2013-11-30 Thread Miller
# 17 & #25 worked, but with the following deviation:

sudo apt-get -f install

This corrected a problem with packages with unmet dependencies:
wine1.4-i386 : Depends: wine1.4 (= 1.4.10ubuntu7) but is not going to be
installed
recommends: libcap20-3 but it is not going to be installed
recommends: unixdbc but it is not going to be installed

All the .ttfs and other packages installed without a problem after
entering the slight aforementioned modification.

I'm still not sure of the root cause, but the fix appears to have worked
(everything loaded successfully).

[Bug 1020210] Re: Race condition using ATOMIC_FASTBINS in _int_free causes crash or heap corruption

2013-11-30 Thread Michael Truog
Sorry for the previous comment. After testing with jemalloc and
valgrind, I found the problem was caused by a double free within a class
destructor, that was being used within an std::unordered_set, so the
copy constructor was causing deletions and accesses to the deleted
memory. It helped to have the debug compilation of jemalloc, so it
would have been helpful to have the equivalent debug compilation of the
glibc malloc available, but it may not have enough assert statements to
catch this.

[Bug 1256613] [NEW] Huawei E173 UMTS stick; sometimes not possible to activate mobile connection

2013-11-30 Thread Tilman Krummeck
Public bug reported:

I have an Acer Aspire 1810TZ notebook running Ubuntu 13.10. When
connecting my Huawei E173 UMTS stick, it is sometimes not possible to
activate the mobile network connection in the network menu (when
clicking on the network icon in the upper right corner).

I attached the output of dmesg. The first time I connected the stick I
cannot activate the connection. After disconnecting and reconnecting the
device it works properly.

occurs in 1 of 3 tries, so I can reproduce it.

The issue is caused by radeon.dpm being enabled by default in kernel

system will immediately reset shortly after the display is initiated.

+ [radeon dpm] Kernel 3.13-rc2 Immediately Resets/Reboots

** Description changed:

- If I install kernel 3.13-rc2 and boot into it, it will, after some time
- (usually around the time it gets to the login screen), immediately
- reboot. I will test to see what kernel the issue started with.

[Bug 1256590] Re: J. Random User Showing In Unity Power Menu Indicator

2013-11-30 Thread Andy Morris
I have no idea which package caused it. That's for you (the developers)
to figure out.

In my posting, I let you know already that the only 'first time' usage
of an app which may be related to this is "Remmina Remote Desktop
Client". But I don't know for sure if that app caused the problem as the
error that I'm reporting is seen on the Ubuntu Desktop and not inside a
specific application.

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Danato, ok so in order to verify the previously mentioned commit is indeed the
fix, please execute the following in a terminal:
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git &&
cd linux && git checkout commit 9efa5e50598c5568b0678bb411b239a0b6e9a328 && cp
/boot/config-`uname -r` .config && yes '' | make oldconfig && make clean &&
make -j `getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN` deb-pkg LOCALVERSION=-custom && cd .. &&
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

reboot and this kernel should fail as it is one commit prior. I'm using
the following as a reference

`hda:hda_send_cmd` traces each CORB write while `hda:hda_get_response`
traces the response from RIRB (only when read from the codec driver).
`hda:hda_bus_reset` traces the bus-reset due to fatal error, etc,
`hda:hda_unsol_event` traces the unsolicited events, and
`hda:hda_power_down` and `hda:hda_power_up` trace the power down/up
via power-saving behavior.

Enabling all tracepoints can be done like

  # echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/hda/enable

[Bug 1256599] [NEW] constant polling of USB floppy drive, independent of distro

2013-11-30 Thread Scott Moore
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 3.11.0-13.20-generic 3.11.6

Tested on 2 separate machines, one running Xubuntu 13.10 and the other
openSUSE 13.1. No disk is in, yet the drive constantly spins and makes a
dull sound every few seconds like it's moving resetting the drive head
position. After a disk is inserted and the initial read takes place,
this constant polling behavior stops. It only occurs when there is no
disk in the drive.

[Bug 1250051] Re: [Lenovo G780] Backlight switched off at login screen

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Danato, your reverse mainline kernel version testing was quite helpful in
finding potential commits that fixed this problem. One that stands out is:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/commit/?h=linux-3.12.y&id=76641adddc5dc634cb7759dfa95d3d5a545678d1

I'm struggling to easily download the 3.12 branch to compile it, so I'll
mark this Triaged for now until either I figure it out, or the fix is
released into a Ubuntu kernel.

[Bug 1231725] Re: bbswitch-dkms causes forced shutdown (even in reboot)

2013-11-30 Thread Vincent Cheng
What happens if you try to tell bbswitch not to disable your nvidia card
at shutdown? To accomplish this, see the "Enable card on shutdown"
section in /usr/share/doc/bbswitch-dkms/README.md.gz, i.e.:

### Enable card on shutdown

Some machines do not like the card being disabled at shutdown.
Add the next initscript (`/etc/init/bbswitch.conf`) :
description "Save power by disabling nvidia on Optimus"
 author "Lekensteyn "
 start onrunlevel [2345]
 stop on runlevel [016]
 pre-start exec /sbin/modprobe bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=1
 pre-stopexec /sbin/rmmod bbswitch

[Bug 1061001] Re: Shutter only shows Wallpaper / black screen in Ubuntu 12.10 (with fglrx)

2013-11-30 Thread Phillip Pether
EDIT UPDATE ***

Shutter seems to work like normal after killing it from Terminal;

$ killall shutter -9

and even tested by calling Shutter from the CLI and successfully takes a
screenshot without turning screen black with just mouse cursor. This is
only a temporary fix measure when it plays up. I've added screenshot
here with a bunch of errors it throws out from starting by command line

[Bug 1256591] Re: The system is unable to read from a PTP camera.

2013-11-30 Thread Thomas Sisson
It apparently is known that one may access photos from Shotwell despite
this bug, but one should not have to install Shotwell when running
Kubuntu. This is only a workaround. It does not allow one to open the
camera in a file viewer. Apparently, this is a problem in Nautilus and
Nemo as well. For me, it also does not work in Konqueror either.

I cannot even get it to work using sudo dolphin or even logging in as
root. The problem with Shotwell is that once you have downloaded a photo
from the camera and answered no to delete the photo, you can't go back
and delete it again.

This can lead to many cameras becoming too full to take any more
pictures or videos. We just had Thanksgiving here in the USA, Hanukkah
has started, and Christmas is coming. What a time to find out one's
camera is full and one cannot delete saved photos.

of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please just make a comment to this.

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1256591] [NEW] The system is unable to read from a PTP camera.

2013-11-30 Thread Thomas Sisson
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 13.10 kernel 3.11.0-12-generic
Dolphin Version 4.11.2
Gwenview Version 4.11.2
Last update 15/10/2013

The system was unable to read from a PTP camera. The problem may be
about permissions. The following is repeatable on this system.

Log in as user. Plug in and switch on PTP camera (Fuji F660EXR in this
case). Device notifier responds and gives the choice of Dolphin or
Gwenview. Dolphin show a Camera folder but is unable to open it.
Gwenview does not see any images.

Log out and then log in.

Open a terminal and start Dolphin with "sudo dolphin " then
close Dolphin.

Plug in and switch on PTP camera. Device notifier responds as before.
Now both Dolphin will open the camera files and Gwenview will view the
images. They will continue to do so until the next time user logs in.

A permanent solution is desirable

[Bug 1256590] [NEW] J. Random User Showing In Unity Power Menu Indicator

2013-11-30 Thread Andy Morris
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I encountered an issue that was very concerning, at least
until I investigated a bit more, and found that it may only be due to
debug/test code that's still be present in released software. The search
I made brought me here. Please redirect me if I'm in the wrong place.

"J. Random User" appeared in the Ubuntu 13.10 (x86_64) Unity Power
indicator list, below 'Lock' and above '{my user name}'.

This was only noticed as I was about to lock the screen, which I do a
number of times per day, however, this time "J. Random User" was
visible.

There was no User Account for that entry in System Settings > User Accounts.
There was no one else logged onto the machine except my own username (checked
by '$ w').
There seemed to be no rogue processes running (checked in log and current
processes).

>From a security point of view, it was very concerning. But after my
searches on the matter, I belive the machine not to be compromised, but
tickled by 'developer test code'.

Restarting the computer removed the issue.

It could be coincidence, but the only bit of new software I tried (for
the first time ever) was the "Remmina Remote Desktop Client" to see if
was interested to remotely connect to another computer on the home
network. After restarting my computer and running that software again,
it did not cause a "J. Random User" to appear in the indicator, so it
could be a red-herring.

It could also be related to this? :
https://code.launchpad.net/~larsu/ido/custom-menu-items/+merge/165498

Hope you know something about it, or can redirect this bug report
elsewhere.

Thanks.

[Bug 1256588] [NEW] PPC: LiveCD installation window vanishes during installation

2013-11-30 Thread Keith Rogers
Public bug reported:

I attempted to install from the 20131130 PPC LiveCD via usb flash drive.
I used the erase entire drive option.

The installation window proceeds until where the slide show would begin.
At that point, there is a blank area where the first slide would
normally be. The progress text reads copying files.

After about 30 seconds, the entire installation window vanishes, and all
that is left is the spinning gear. After 90 minutes, the installation
never finished. I ran ubuntu-bug ubiquity from a terminal, and then I
did a forced shutdown from the power button on the computer. I could not
get to a console.

Examining the hard drive, the installer looks to have partitioned the
drive, but only installed three folders: /etc., /lost+found, and /media.

[Bug 1255700] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-30 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi Christopher,

Did some testing as you requested via live usb.
In 12.04 and 12.04.3 the issue is the same.

Also saw that mainline kernel v3.13-rc2 was available, so tested with that also.
No difference, and like v3.13-rc1 shutdown doesn't work.

Changed the tag from kernel-bug-exists-upstream-v3.13-rc1 to kernel-bug-
exists-upstream-v3.13-rc2, if thats ok.
