[Bug 1010931] Re: 14e4:4727 With Broadcom BCM4313, 2.4GHz works but 5GHz doesn't

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
ealthuis, as per
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/vostro-3555 an update is
available for your BIOS (A05). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and just provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1011669] Re: PCIe ExpressCards are not automatically detected upon insertion on FSC Esprimo Mobile U9200

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
mlx, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel
available via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.13-rc6-trusty/ and advise to the results?

[Bug 575669] Re: Rapid depletion of entropy pool

2013-12-30 Thread agent 8131
Christopher,

Can you explain how the commit you linked to resolves this issue? The
commit seems to place process permissions checks on /proc/pid/stat and
/proc/pid/wchan. I do not see how this affects the available entropy
unless entropy is being depleted by unauthorized processes accessing
those endpoints, which does not seem very likely to me. I doubt I will
have time to test trusty before it is released, but once released I will
test within a virtual server to see if this issue has been resolved.

Ubuntu, please feel free to file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the
following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a
mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Burkhard Arenfeld, as per http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z68V_LX/#support
an update is available for your BIOS (4105).

[Bug 1193445] Re: Directory /var/log/nginx is world readable [CVE-2013-0337]

2013-12-30 Thread Thomas Ward
1.4.4-2ubuntu1 was uploaded by cjwatson and was published on December
28, 2013 in Trusty. This merge of 1.4.4-2 from Debian Unstable
contained the changes which closed Debian bug 701112 (which is linked to
this bug). This fix is now in Trusty, however the changelog for
1.4.4-2ubuntu1 did not reference this bug number so it was not
automatically Fix Released for Trusty.

[Bug 989750] Re: repeatedly asks for encryption password when backing up, even though remember password is ticked

2013-12-30 Thread Elias Aarnio
I would really love to see this fixed. This is again a good example how
really important things are just broken. When a fresh Linux user bumps
into things like this, he/she is very likely to go the proprietary way.

A year and a half and no solution. This is sad.

I am willing to help but I am not very advanced technically. Please let
me know if I can offer any additional information.

astro, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If

of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel
available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

[Bug 1019672] Re: 8086:4230 wifi hw hangs

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Istvan Toth, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is
available for your BIOS (2.30).

[Bug 1265065] [NEW] Desktop freeze while drag-maximizing window

2013-12-30 Thread Per Vapp
Public bug reported:

It has happened today twice at 22:23 and 22:54. I laft click with mouse
on firefox titlebar and try to drag it up against taskbar to make FF
windo to maximize. I see this shadow/animation of window about to extend
its borders and desktop freezes. I do not remember if mouse still moves.
I go to another console Ctrl+Alt+1, log in, and execute pkill -U
username that brings me back to logon screen.

[Bug 1263053] Re: Update the avrdude, avr-libc, binutils-avr and other packages in precise and lucid branches of Ubuntu

2013-12-30 Thread Rounak SIngh
After lots of googling, I found that the third party software (or
community maintained) are in universe repository component.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu

So, I changed my apt software sources for only universe to trusty,
as the other three (main, restricted and multiverse) are good with
precise.

Add following to the /etc/apt/sources.list
[code]
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty universe
[/code]

It is working fine... though need to be vigil for some behaviour of apt;
such as some packages may be kept back or not upgrade ( but that's not a
big deal since those are dependencies which are kept back for some other
packages, and therefore need not to upgrade).

[Bug 1020207] Re: gfs2 kernel oops when deleting file as first action after mounting

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Dave Spano, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel
available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1264609] Re: No AC3 paththrough with hda intel ALC887-VD Saucy

2013-12-30 Thread Daniel Schürmann
Hi Raymond,

thank you very much for your help!

why do you specify ,DEV=0 ?

because it is the output form
play -L

iec958:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC887-VD Digital
IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

I can play stereo wave files with a play and this device as desired.

do your card have spdif out at rear and internal spdif out header ?

Yes, It is a ASUS on-board sound solution with an external Toslink
connector and an unused internal spdif out header.

Here my test results from the provided link:

 mplayer dvd://1 -channels 6 -ao alsa:device=iec958=1.0 -ac hwac3
- Dolby Digital 3/2.1 Output (6 Channel) ; iecset -D hw:1 reports
non-audio (yippee)

But:

mplayer dvd://1 -channels 6 -ac hwac3
- No Digital Output (2 Channel) no pulse input; iecset -D hw:1 reports
audio

mplayer dvd://1 -channels 6
- Digital PCM Output (2 Channel) via pulse (6 Channels Input in
pavucontrol); iecset -D hw:1 reports audio

Conclusion:
It is mplayer + alsa iec958 driver works as desired
a52 plugin + alsa iec958 driver works as desired

aplay + alsa iec958 driver no sound
Pulsaudio + alsa iec958 driver works but no passthrough
vlc + pulseaudo works but no passthrough
vlc + alsa iec958 driver no sound
totem + pulseaudo no sound

So there must be must be something like an interface change that does not
effect mplayer and a52, but the other players.
Any Idea? What can I do next for debug?

[Bug 998546] Re: 0408:3003 Touch-screen did work on 11.04 but no longer works on 12.04

2013-12-30 Thread Paddy Landau
Christopher, Benjamin worked it out over a series of emails. As I am not
technically minded, I don't really understand what happened; I just
followed a few instructions.

Fortunately, I kept all the email correspondence. I have put them into a

start with the date and time to make for easy chronological ordering. I
hope that you can make sense of Benjamin's solution.

[Bug 1265069] [NEW] The POSTINST script tries to unzip/untar from directory other than wget output

2013-12-30 Thread David A. Cobb
Public bug reported:

User root (where the installer is running) may have a '.wgetrc' file
specifying directories (or even host-directories).
If so, wget in SUSV3.POSTINST will put the download in one place, but the
script will not look there -- it will look in $TMPDIR.

This could easily be avoided by specifying -nd -nH on the wget command
line.

Really, it's not nice to make too many assumptions about the user's
(root's) configuration.

I'm not sure whether it's an issue or not anymore. I discontinued using

[Bug 1023984] Re: Ralink wifi problem in dual boot under Ubuntu 12.04

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andreo Blas, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel
available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1024568] Re: wireless injection doesnt work due to channel bug

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Waleed Hamra, checking for the patch noted in the Bug Description, it's
not available in =Trusty, linux development, or linux-next.

Hence, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the
daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will
allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1251441] Re: [Fujitsu LIFEBOOK T900] Stylus input stops working after resuming from suspend

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher Kyle Horton
@Christopher M. Penalver: I went to bisect the Ubuntu kernel versions
like I mentioned in the last comment, but the problem is present all the
way back in the 3.9.0-0.1 kernel (the earliest published version for
Saucy AFAICT), and attempting to run any earlier kernels from Raring
results in a stretched screen, no working WiFi/USB, and the stylus not
working at all.

I'm not sure if I am able to proceed and reliably pinpoint exactly where
the last good kernel version is given this, unless this is normal. I
have not done a bisection before and I am not sure if this means I am
doing it correctly. Should I proceed to the next step and start checking
out the source via git to build, and aim for revisions before 3.9.0-0.1?
I would like some advice here.

Alessandro Pignotti, as per
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VPCSB2C5E/updates an update is
available for your BIOS (R2087H4).

[Bug 1265090] [NEW] compgen -C Appends Extra Empty String Arguments

Public bug reported:

On Precise 12.04

When compgen is used to call an external command via -C, it adds three
extra empty string arguments. While some commands are ok with that, it
breaks many others.

Simple Test Case:

$ cat  /tmp/print_args EOF
#!/usr/bin/env python

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Ubuntu desktop is too buggy to gain majority market share

2013-12-30 Thread Martin Wildam
I think this bug should be forked into two because regarding PC/Laptops the
bug is IMHO definitely not fixed.

Why there should be a difference? - Well, although most people I know do
have a smartphone (or two - a private one and a business phone) and maybe
also have a tablet, ALL OF THEM do their main computer work with a PC or
laptop. You cannot assume that most of the serious computer work is done
from an Android phone or tablet. And IMHO that won't be the case for the
next years.

This bug is widely evident in the PC industry.

   Steps to repeat:

   1. Visit a local PC store.
   2. Attempt to buy a machine without any proprietary software.

   What happens:

Almost always, a majority of PCs for sale have Microsoft Windows pre-
installed. In the rare cases that they come with a GNU/Linux operating
system or no operating system at all, the drivers and BIOS may be
   proprietary.

   What should happen:

A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software.

Best regards, Martin.

Re: [Bug 212588] Re: Does not start

2013-12-30 Thread Martin Wildam
By accident sitting in front of an Ubuntu 12.10 and tried the default
freemind 0.9.0 package from the repositories.

Looks like my patch is not applied but freemind starts fine.
Maybe /usr/lib/java-wrappers/java-wrappers.sh has been changed in the
meantime or it is due to the fact that this machine here is a very default
installation:
/usr/bin/java - /etc/alternatives/java
/etc/alternatives/java - /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java

while my machine has several java versions installed (as part of my work is
java development) and this is why maybe freemind's way of finding the
correct java installation struggles in the case when multiple java versions
are available on the machine (did not investigate the java-wrappers.sh in
detail).

[Bug 1255165] Re: make it clearer that crash files may contain private data and make it easier to opt out

2013-12-30 Thread Gary Houston
Interesting quote from http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology
/report-nsa-intercepts-computer-deliveries/2013/12/29/dc14c3da-70a2-11e3
-bc6b-712d770c3715_story.html?clsrd

One of the most striking reported revelations concerned the NSA’s
alleged ability to spy on Microsoft Corp.’s crash reports, familiar to
many users of the Windows operating system as the dialogue box which
pops up when a game freezes or a Word document dies. The reporting
system is intended to help Microsoft engineers improve their products
and fix bugs, but Der Spiegel said the NSA was also sifting through the
reports to help spies break into machines running Windows. One NSA
document cited by the magazine appeared to poke fun at Microsoft’s
expense, replacing the software giant’s standard error report message
with the words: “This information may be intercepted by a foreign sigint
(signals intelligence) system to gather detailed information and better
exploit your machine.”

[Bug 1030452] Re: Mouse goes invisible upon activating any element.

2013-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Nicholas Allam, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu on your host and guest? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command from
your host (not your guest) in the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

And the one that doesn't... The values of several fields have been
altered, but I attempted to do so consistently, so you should be able to
figure it out.

[Bug 1211887] Re: software-center crashed with signal 5 in _XReadEvents()

On my saucy box, I installed gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-3.0 and gir1.2-webkit-3.0
version 1.10.2-0ubuntu3 from proposed.
I am happy to report that that resolved the issue for me.

python-jsonpath-rw looks good. Tests, we're in sync with Debian, good
packaging, builds fine.

However, it needs a team bug subscriber.

[Bug 1259860] [NEW] Apparmor doesn't allow volume to attach in 13.10 Ubuntu

2013-12-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Host machine: Ubuntu desktop 13.10
Setup: devstack

When I try to attach a volume to an instance via the CLI, the volume
doesn't get attached. It's status still shows 'available'. While the
logs tell that 'device /dev/vdx is busy'. Here are the logs from screen
http://paste.openstack.org/show/54808/

I looked into /var/log/libvirt/libvirtd.log and found this:
http://paste.openstack.org/show/54809/

As per this guy's question at ask.openstack.org,
https://ask.openstack.org/en/question/7128/deviceisbusy-the-supplied-device-vdx-is-busy/
I uninstalled apparmor, and restarted and tried again. EVERYTHING went smooth!
Looks like some issue with apparmor conflicting with libvirt.
