[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-04 Thread Vasiliy Faronov
Can confirm this with GDM, without haveged, on a Lenovo Thinkpad S440:

- with kernel 4.15.0-24, GDM comes up after several minutes
- if I wiggle the touchpad, in a dozen seconds
- with kernel 4.15.0-23, immediately (no issue)

Strangely, I recall that when I first experienced this issue a couple
days ago, it seemed to happen with -23 at least once, causing me to fall
back further onto -20. May have been some error on my part.

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In trying to identify the source of the problem we will need people to
temporarily remove haveged.

Next, please reproduce the issue and just leave the machine running. Do
the graphics eventually come up after a few minutes of waiting? Please
also repeat the test but wiggle the mouse/touchpad while waiting - does
that make it come up sooner?

[Bug 1780174] [NEW] Compile error when using Boost Spirit from v1.65.1

2018-07-04 Thread Nikita
Public bug reported:

Compiling an app (in Ubuntu 18.04 [1] with GCC 7) that uses Boost Spirit
from v1.65.1 [2] results in the following compiler error:

/usr/include/boost/spirit/home/classic/phoenix/special_ops.hpp:62:48: error:
‘complex’ is not a member of ‘std’
 template struct rank >
^~~
/usr/include/boost/spirit/home/classic/phoenix/special_ops.hpp:62:48: error:
‘complex’ is not a member of ‘std’
/usr/include/boost/spirit/home/classic/phoenix/special_ops.hpp:62:57: error:
template argument 1 is invalid
 template struct rank >
 ^
/usr/include/boost/spirit/home/classic/phoenix/special_ops.hpp:62:59: error:
expected unqualified-id before ‘>’ token
 template struct rank >

Looks like this is a known Boost bug and have been fixed since[3], but
Ubuntu 18.04 still has the older version with that bug in it.

I had this problem WITH the package bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271
+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.2. But found the solution here:
https://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/15842/bcm43142-and-
linux-kernel-4-15-0-24-generic

"I had to download the package for 18.04LTS
(https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/bcmwl-kernel-source) and install it
using:

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo dpkg -i bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb"

That worked perfectly for me. Fortunately, I found this solution before
rebooting so I've never lost conection in the process.
My ubuntu kernel is 16.04.13. My wifi card is BCM4313 802.11bgn.

Same problem here, but fixed from:
https://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/15842/bcm43142-and-
linux-kernel-4-15-0-24-generic

"I had to download the package for 18.04LTS

using:

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo dpkg -i bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb"

That worked perfectly for me. Fortunately, I found this solution before
rebooting so I've never lost conection in the process.

[Bug 1780077] Re: FIFO underrun error

It sounds like you're referring to:

[ 22.774658] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU

[ 23.870619] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU

So this would be a kernel bug. However in my experience such kernel
errors are also not fatal and won't cause permanent graphics problems.

Looking at your CPU model however:
  Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500
I can tell you are experiencing bug 1727356, which is not related to kernel
errors at all.

[Bug 1780169] [NEW] Orientation was disappeared when the machine has accelerometer in 18.04

2018-07-04 Thread Betty Lin

orientation can be changed in 18.04

If connect to an external monitor, can't change the orientation to

I find it disturbing we still have parts of the system that will block

But maybe that's not the same problem as njsf is experiencing...

of these:

[Bug 583577] Re: "View by Threads with Unread" results in no ability to read some messages

2018-07-04 Thread gf
Hi Bryn,
I have tested it in Thunderbird 52.8.0 in Ubuntu 18.04. It looks different, in
that the "plus" signs are now arrowheads, but they do work and expand the sub
list well. And the green button works to mark as "read" all the items in the
sublist (even if the list is collapsed).
I have attached a screen shot of a portion of my list.

I tried to create duplicate emails but it doesn't treat those as a
thread (so, no arrowhead) but the green button works to make it "read."

Am I trying this correctly? What version of Thunderbird do you have?
Thanks
G

[Bug 1775016] Re: [Dell Latitude E6420] Ubuntu/Xubuntu 18.04 bug: Keyboard stops working in the middle of typing when running firefox and when running the terminal (sudo su) and similar programs until

2018-07-04 Thread David Gil
This just in, given that I currently use Linux 4.10.17-041017-generic
(x86_64), here is my situation as of now:

1. I was in Twitter.
2. I was trying to type my tweet
3. The up button temporarily does not work but other buttons do work
4. And when I press other keys and mouse, **the up button works again like it
refuses to get stuck**

And I just tested the up button here in my typing of this comment and
the cursor does go up.

[Bug 1780162] [NEW] libreoffice triggers very many AppArmor complaints

2018-07-04 Thread David A. Cobb
Public bug reported:

Starting even the splash screen, and starting an application, and
openning a file, and even moving the mouse(!!) fills my screen with
AppArmor complaints.

It appears to me, the problem is in the packaged

"flags="(complain) everywhere.

I cannot even seem to aa-disable these profiles; the complaints just
keep coming.

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-04 Thread Brad
I believe I found a solution (or at least, a temporary workaround until
the potential bug is fixed). It seemed the bug was introduced in
4.15.0-24, as 4.15.0-23 works fine. I'm running an up-to-date 18.04
system on top of a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga.

I would get a blank screen with both GDM and LightDM until I started
switching virtual terminals or typing my login info, at which point, it
would just start up seemingly at random. I set systemd to boot to multi-
user instead of graphical, and ran 'startx' and experienced the exact
same delay. I took a look at the startx script source and I traced it
down to a call to /usr/bin/mcookie which generates a magic number to be
used with xauth. According to the BUGS section in the mcookie manpage,
it states that mcookie assumes that "none of the randomness sources will
block." Sure enough, doing an strace on mcookie shows it hangs at a call
to getrandom(), which I'm assuming (my knowledge is a little fuzzy here)
means that entropy is too low for getrandom() to generate a number.
Moving the mouse around, typing a few characters or switching virtual
terminals, to my knowledge, all generate some entropy so that finally
when there's enough, getrandom() returns a number to mcookie, thus
allowing xorg to start.

TL;DR: I installed 'haveged' from the repo, which, as far as I
understand, adds to the entropy on boot, allowing xorg to start without
any delay.

My next step is to take a look at the changelog between kernel releases
and see what I can come up with as a potential cause, but I figured I
would post what I've found so that others may benefit in the meantime.
