default settings rather than your own.

Actually I can't remember if that's strictly true for 18.04. But rather
than test 18.04 I've just checked on 20.04 and can confirm that:

  gsettings set 'org.gnome.desktop.interface' 'clock-format' '12h'

works for the new lock screen.

[Bug 1845756] Re: lubuntu - strange movement of wallpaper on monitor.settings change (or next login)

2021-02-25 Thread Chris Guiver
** Description changed:

- Lubuntu 19.10 daily
+ Originally Lubuntu 19.10 daily
  deb cdrom:[Lubuntu 19.10 _Eoan Ermine_ - Beta amd64 (20190926.1)]/ eoan main
multiverse restricted universe

I adjusted the monitor.settings to match my setup, also changing the
primary screen and it did exactly what I wanted, however the wallpaper
appears to have been misplaced; the top.of.wallpaper is now displayed on
my bottom.monitor with my top.monitor having no wallpaper (this bottom
  half of wallpaper isn't shown)

- The importance of this is probably MINIMAL-NIL.
+ The importance of this is probably MINIMAL.

I have been able to re-create it, but it only seems to occur with a
specific setup, and is likely linked to
  https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1709 or
  https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1704 (though upstream suspect those
two bugs & others are linked).
+

+ LXQt 0.16 on Lubuntu Hirsute; this has been re-created. Also note (see
comments #10-12)

You had a whitespace issue in the changelog, but other than that all seem
reasonable.
Thanks for starting the discussion with Debian as all our delta seems to be
autopkgtest related maybe we can sort it out.

Sponsored and later needs to be ran against the other new bits to then
hopefully work.

[Bug 1845756] Re: lubuntu - strange movement of wallpaper on monitor.settings change (or next login)

2021-02-25 Thread Chris Guiver
Repeat of comment #9 on Lubuntu daily hirsute, on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

Again, I was testing for other bugs, and the logout/login step used to
prove that caused this issue to re-appear.

PLEASE NOTE:

I don't consider this bug an issue with regards Lubuntu.

Yeah it's a bug, however I've not experienced it (that I can recall
recently) on an installed box.

Whatever the issue is though, I noted today

- On the TOP.monitor I'm getting OPENBOX menu on right click
- On the BOTTOM.monitor, I'm getting standard LXQt menu

[Bug 1855471] Re: Lock Screen uses 24-hour format even though the only account logged in uses 12-hour format

2021-02-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The lock screen runs as a different user so it will use the system
default settings rather than your own. You should be able to configure
your preferences to make them system wide, in

Settings >
Language & Region >
Manage Installed Languages >
Regional Formats >
Apply System-Wide.

As for:

  b'org.gnome.desktop.interface' b'clock-format' b"'12h'"

that's probably a separate setting. You would need to figure out how to
apply that same setting for the user 'gdm' to affect the login screen.

Thanks. The iwconfig output seems to show the wifi adapter is missing at
the kernel level. When it was working your kernel log shows the adapter
was called 'wlp1s0'... Next time the problem happens, please run this
while it is happening:

  dmesg > dmesg.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

[Bug 1913321] Re: [MIR] iniparser (dependency of mtd-utils)

2021-02-25 Thread Alex Murray
I reviewed iniparser 4.1-4 as checked into hirsute. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

iniparser is a small C library for parsing ini-style configuration
files.

- CVE History:
  - None, however in 2016 a security issue was raised on their Github
https://github.com/ndevilla/iniparser/issues/68 - it took a few months
for this to be fixed but at worst this was a DoS issue - no CVE was
ever assigned.
- No security relevant Build-Depends
- No pre/post inst/rm scripts
- No init scripts
- No systemd units
- No dbus services
- No setuid binaries
- No binaries in PATH
- No sudo fragments
- No polkit files
- No udev rules
- unit tests / autopkgtests
  - autopkgtests run a couple of the examples shipped in the package source
  - unit tests are run during the build and these look reasonably
extensive - there was one issue discovered by sbeattie via Coverity
which prevented one of the tests cases in one of the tests from running
https://github.com/ndevilla/iniparser/issues/131
- No cron jobs
- Build logs:
  - ERRORS / WARNINGS
- During build gcc outputs the following warning:
  src/iniparser.c: In function ‘iniparser_load’:
  src/iniparser.c:791:32: warning: ‘__builtin___sprintf_chk’ may write a
terminating nul past the end of the destination [-Wformat-overflow=]
- This happens at the following code:

  sprintf(tmp, "%s:%s", section, key);

In this case, where tmp, section and key are declared as:

  char section [ASCIILINESZ+1] ;
  char key [ASCIILINESZ+1] ;
  char tmp [(ASCIILINESZ * 2) + 1] ;

As such, at most section and key are both ASCIILINESZ plus 1 colon
separator fills then entire tmp buffer and leaves no space for a
terminating NUL - so this looks like a real bug which could result in
a 1-byte stack buffer overflow. This has already been fixed upstream

so this patch should be integrated into our package.

  - LINTIAN FAILURES
- Only 2 relevant lintian warnings:

  W: iniparser source: uses-deprecated-adttmp debian/tests/iniexample (line
4)
  W: iniparser source: uses-deprecated-adttmp debian/tests/parse (line 4)

- No processes spawned
- Memory management
  - Appears to be careful for the main library code (there are a bunch of
issues in the unit test code but in general they are minor anyway)
- File IO
  - Opens whatever path is specified in main library function
iniparser_load() - appears to have relatively strict validation of
input from this
- No logging
- No environment variable usage
- No use of privileged functions
- No use of cryptography / random number sources etc
- No use of temp files other than in unit tests
- No use of networking
- No use of WebKit
- No use of PolicyKit

- No significant cppcheck results
- No significant Coverity results
- No significant shellcheck results
- No significant bandit results

In general iniparser appears reasonably safe and the upstream seems
relatively responsive to potential security issues. The code has reasonable
unit tests etc that should allow to easily re-test the library in the event
that it needs to be patched for any possible future security issue.

Security team ACK for promoting iniparser to main once the above listed
patch is integrated to fix this obvious issue.

[Bug 1916850] Re: Dell logo pops up for a while before gdm hand over to X session

2021-02-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The first thing to check is whether it's plymouth displaying the logo.
It is meant to do so at certain times, but usually fails on Nvidia due
to bug 1868240. Try booting with the 'nosplash' kernel parameter as that
should remove plymouth from the equation.

[Bug 1916971] Re: After fresh Ubuntu 20.04 install, downgrading Nvidia driver doesn't update nvidia modules in kernel

2021-02-25 Thread Ubuntu Tinkerer
** Summary changed:

- After fresh install, downgrading Nvidia driver doesn't update nvidia modules
in kernel
+ After fresh Ubuntu 20.04 install, downgrading Nvidia driver doesn't update
nvidia modules in kernel

** Description changed:

  SYSTEM:

  Laptop: ASUS ROG GL552VW
- OS: Ubuntu 20.04
+ OS: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
GRAPHICS: Nvidia Geforce GTX 960m AND Intel HD Graphics
  Linux kernel version: 5.8.0-44-generic

  SUMMARY:

From a fresh working install of Ubuntu 20.04, I downgraded from nvidia-
driver-460 by installing nvidia-driver-440 (which actually is a
- transitional package to nvidia-driver-450). After reboot I couldn't
- reach login-screen and instead got a black screen.
+ transitional package to nvidia-driver-450 but I didn't know this). After
+ reboot I couldn't reach login-screen and instead got a black screen.

Problem was that sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-440 did not insert
nvidia modules v450 in kernel since never versions v460 were found.

- This was solved by dropping into safe mode and uninstalling linux-
- modules-nvidia-460 packages and instead installing linux-modules-
- nvidia-450 packages.
+ This was solved by uninstalling linux-modules-nvidia-460 packages and
+ instead installing linux-modules-nvidia-450 packages (see WORKAROUND
+ below for instructions).

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Install Ubuntu 20.04. During installation, allow for the installation of
  proprietary drivers.

Once Ubuntu 20.04 has started, open a terminal and run the following:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-440
  sudo shutdown reboot now

  PROBLEM:

After reboot, you can't reach login screen. Instead you get stuck during
  bootup.

  WORKAROUND:

Remove the linux-modules-nvidia-460 packages and install the
corresponding linux-modules-nvidia-450 packages. In my case I had Linux
kernel versions 5.8.0-44-generic and 5.8.0-43-generic installed so I did
as follows from recovery mode with network (instead entering recovery
mode, you should be able to press CTRL+ALT+F1 from the blank screen
after bootup, login with username and password and then running these
  commands):

  sudo apt-get autoremove --purge linux-modules-nvidia-460-5.8.0-44-generic
linux-modules-nvidia-460-5.8.0-43-generic
  sudo apt-get install linux-modules-nvidia-450-5.8.0-44-generic
linux-modules-nvidia-450-5.8.0-43-generic
  sudo shutdown reboot now

  QUESTION:

Why was the linux-modules-nvidia-460 packages installed by the Ubuntu
installer to begin with? I ask since I later removed the linux-modules-
nvidia-450 packages (OBSERVE: 450, not 460) and used the Additional
Drivers GUI to update back to nvidia-driver-460. Now linux-modules-
nvidia-460 packages are NOT installed but the following still outputs

[Bug 1891934] Re: [MIR] google-osconfig-agent

2021-02-25 Thread Seth Arnold
I took another very quick look at the previous issues I reported and
most have been addressed; the extractZip, extractTar functions still
look quite likely to have all the usual problems associated with
handling archive files ("zip slip" and other very catchy names), so
please don't forget about these.

With this kind of rapid turnaround from upstream on problems I think we
can work with this.

As usual with golang projects, I think snap packaging may be a better
fit for the "vendor all the world" approach, but if we're convinced the
costs of .deb packaging for golang are worth it, security team ACK for
promoting google-osconfig-agent to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1891934] Re: [MIR] google-osconfig-agent

2021-02-25 Thread Seth Arnold
For completeness, here's the Coverity output that we generated while
looking at this. The handful of FORWARD_NULL checks looks like Coverity
not understanding golang, but the handful of cases of: "Passing null
pointer "res" to "CheckResponse", which dereferences it." that I
inspected all looked like legitimate findings that should be addressed.

The "Execution cannot reach this statement:" results probably need
inspection.

Probably all the old crypto stuff is known and expected. And probably
the integer comparisons that will never be true are known and expected.

Thanks

[Bug 1916971] [NEW] After fresh install, downgrading Nvidia driver doesn't update nvidia modules in kernel

2021-02-25 Thread Ubuntu Tinkerer
Public bug reported:

SYSTEM:

Laptop: ASUS ROG GL552VW
OS: Ubuntu 20.04
GRAPHICS: Nvidia Geforce GTX 960m AND Intel HD Graphics
Linux kernel version: 5.8.0-44-generic

SUMMARY:

>From a fresh working install of Ubuntu 20.04, I wanted to downgrade from
nvidia-driver-460 by installing nvidia-driver-440 (which actually is a
transitional package to nvidia-driver-450). After reboot I couldn't
reach login-screen and instead got a black screen.

Problem was that sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-440 did not insert
nvidia modules v450 in kernel since never versions v460 were found.

This was solved by dropping into safe mode and uninstalling linux-
modules-nvidia-460 packages and instead installing linux-modules-
nvidia-450 packages.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Install Ubuntu 20.04. During installation, allow for the installation of
proprietary drivers.

Once Ubuntu 20.04 has started, open a terminal and run the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-440
sudo shutdown reboot now

PROBLEM:

After reboot, you can't reach login screen. Instead you get stuck during
bootup.

WORKAROUND:

Remove the linux-modules-nvidia-460 packages and install the
corresponding linux-modules-nvidia-450 packages. In my case I had Linux
kernel versions 5.8.0-44-generic and 5.8.0-43-generic installed so I did
as follows from recovery mode with network:

sudo apt-get autoremove --purge linux-modules-nvidia-460-5.8.0-44-generic
linux-modules-nvidia-460-5.8.0-43-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-modules-nvidia-450-5.8.0-44-generic
linux-modules-nvidia-450-5.8.0-43-generic
sudo shutdown reboot now

460:

modinfo nvidia | grep -i version

LOG:

[Bug 1912844] Re: Bond with OVS bridging RuntimeError: duplicate mac found!

2021-02-25 Thread David Ames
Running with Dan's PPA [0] on the final reboot cloud-init fails with the
following. See attached image.

Stderr: ovs-vsctl: unix:/var/run/openvswitch/db.sock: database
connection failed (No such file or directory)

I'll try and get the rest of the error content (not from console) for
further debugging. But it seems the ovs command is being called before
ovs is up, perhaps?
