[Bug 1961733] [NEW] Jammy on ZFS: Ubiquity installer creates efi partition, then uses existing efi partition on another drive
Public bug reported: Expected: Ubiquity would create efi partition, `/dev/nvme2n1p1`, on installation drive for Ubuntu, `/dev/nvme2n1`, and use the Ubiquity-created partition for installing efi bootloader `/etc/fstab` would reflect the installation of efi bootloader on partition created for efi, `/dev/nvme2n1p1` on installation drive, `/dev/nvme2n1`, mount appropriate partition at `/boot/efi` on startup, and direct future invocations of `grub-mkconfig` accordingly. Actual: Ubiquity created the efi partition on the installation drive, `/dev/nvme2n1p1`, and presumably installed grub/efi on the newly created partition, but somehow referenced a different efi partition in the system, `/dev/nvme0n1p1`, when creating `/etc/fstab`. Having targeted this other existing efi partition in `/etc/fstab`, `/dev/nvme0n1p1`, all subsequent `grub-mkconfig` invocations were targeting this other efi partition on a separate drive, `/dev/nvme0n1p1`, instead of the partition created by Ubiquity for efi, `/dev/nvme2n1p1` on the drive where it installed Ubuntu (the one where efi was "supposed" to be located). Note `/var/log/installer/syslog` suggests grub was installed to Ubuntu installation drive without issue: ``` Feb 17 20:10:14 ubuntu grub-installer: info: Installing grub on '/dev/nvme2n1' Feb 17 20:10:14 ubuntu grub-installer: info: grub-install does not support --no-floppy Feb 17 20:10:14 ubuntu grub-installer: info: Running chroot /target grub-install --force --target x86_64-efi "/dev/nvme2n1" Feb 17 20:10:14 ubuntu grub-installer: Installing for x86_64-efi platform. Feb 17 20:10:15 ubuntu grub-installer: Installation finished. No error reported. Feb 17 20:10:15 ubuntu grub-installer: info: grub-install ran successfully ``` However, `/etc/fstab` shows that `/dev/nvme2n1p1` is not the efi partition, `/dev/nvme0n1p1` is: ``` # # /boot/efi was on /dev/nvme0n1p1 during installation UUID=B045-5C3B /boot/efi vfatumask=0022,fmask=0022,dmask=0022 0 1 /boot/efi/grub /boot/grub nonedefaults, bind 0 0 UUID=584b9b78-7d8d-4a5a-9263-d6f6a48adc6b noneswapsw 0 0 ``` Steps: On computer with >= two hard drives, the opposite drive targeted for installation having a previous linux installation and existing (leftover) efi partition: Boot jammy installer USB Select install Select ZFS as filesystem Wipe installation target drive Proceed through installer as normal (no special conditions) reboot check `/etc/fstab` to find opposite drive used for Ubuntu has been configured for efi partition Background: I started investigating this situation when I noticed there was no history entry in my grub menu for the zfs snapshots taken by `zsys`. Finally tracked down that it was because efi had been put on another drive, but not until exhausting several other possibilities. Initially thought it was an issue with `zsys` not creating snapshot entries. When I determined `zsys` was working I thought it might be `/etc/grub.d/10_linux_zfs` not identifying the snapshots. Turns out it was the installer the whole time, although I am not sure why grub cannot create history entries in a grub menu on an efi partition of a different drive, so perhaps there is additionally an issue with grub. However, I am assuming that because of the automatic entry created in `/etc/fstab`, Ubiquity was most likely responsible for choosing the other drive for efi, despite what its logs say. Ubiquity should probably use the partition it creates for efi instead of using one from another drive, therefore I think this is a reasonable bug to report. This is similar to issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1890453 However, I created a new issue since bug 1890453 involves a Macintosh installation, while my case involves choosing the ZFS option in Ubiquity installer, so I was not sure if my issue specific to the ZFS option, or theirs specific to being installed on a Mac. Long story short, had Ubiquity configured `/etc/fstab` for the partition it made for grub/efi, history entry would have been present in grub menu. Once I changed `/etc/fstab` to use the partition Ubiquity created for efi, the history menu appeared and was able to be viewed and utilized as normal. There is a very long comment on Github zsys repo here regarding the steps I went through to debug - it is missing the part where I investigated `/var/log/installer/syslog`, as I only became aware of that log's existence after coming to file this bug, so it is missing the assumption that the misconfiguration was only in `/etc/fstab` and not the installer using the wrong drive altogether: https://github.com/ubuntu/zsys/issues/223 ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "/var/log/installer contents - including syslog and partman" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961733/+attachment/5562615/+files/installer-logs.tar.gz -- You recei

[Bug 1961697] [NEW] Transaction ID collisions cause slow DNS lookups in getaddrinfo
Public bug reported: When resolving DNS names with getaddrinfo(), I have seen this hang for 5 seconds and then retry and succeed. The issue is that glibc will issue a both an A and query on the same socket, and in some circumstances they can be sent with the same DNS transaction ID as well. I verified this with a packet capture; in the packet capture, I saw the A and queries for a name be made with the same DNS transaction ID, get responses, do nothing for five seconds, and then send the same DNS query again. On the glibc side, I confirmed that it's blocked waiting for the DNS response by interrupting it with gdb, even though the packet capture shows the response has well and truly arrived. I've attached a packet capture & a backtrace of the glibc hang. I believe this is the same issue reported in these places: * In RHEL: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1904153 * Also RHEL: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1903880 * Upstream: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=26600 The environment I noticed this bug in was: * Docker for Mac on an arm64 m1 Macbook * Docker for Mac Linux kernel version is 5.10.76-linuxkit * Linux is also arm64, not emulated * Container with the buggy DNS environment is Ubuntu bionic (also arm64, not emulated) * Glibc 2.27-3ubuntu1.4 However one of the redhat reporters noticed this issue in m6 series EC2 instances in AWS. A patch has been provided upstream for this issue: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/libc-alpha/2020-September/117547.html I applied the upstream patch to glibc 2.27-3ubuntu1.4 and rebuilt the package, and the problem went away. I've attached the exact patch I applied, since I had to work through some conflicts. So, I think that patch just needs to be backported to Bionic and (I think) Focal as well. Is that reasonable? Thanks! ** Affects: glibc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Patch added: "upstream patch with conflicts resolved for 2.27" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961697/+attachment/5562611/+files/resolv-txnid-collision.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961697 Title: Transaction ID collisions cause slow DNS lookups in getaddrinfo To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1961697/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1961645] Re: QEMU packages have circular dependencies
nope, you're wrong. qemu-block-extra is a set of plugins. This package is useless without one of the other binary packages which can load these plugins. This is one of qemu-system-foo, AND qemu-utils - that's the set of packages q-b-e should depend on in order to actually work. And speaking of qemu-utils - it looks like this one is missing in the list of dep alternatives. On the other hand, qemu-system-* does not depend on its plugins, the plugins are optional. And I've no idea why ubuntu makess this a hard dependency - on debian this is just recommends, - or else q-b-e should not be a separate package to begin with, the plugins can be complied into the other binary packages just fine. BTW, putting this logic aside: what's wrong with circular dependencies? Note this is all the same source, so it's easy to fulfill the deps. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961645 Title: QEMU packages have circular dependencies To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu/+bug/1961645/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1961646] [NEW] On AMD platforms s2idle may not work w/o proper FW
Public bug reported: It was raised because of a community member using a Lenovo platform having very odd s2idle failures. It was later debugged that it was caused by them choosing "Linux" mode in Lenovo BIOS setup rather than "Windows" mode and then choosing "s2idle" in /sys/power/mem_sleep. - In "Linux" mode there is both "deep" and "s2idle" offered in /sys/power/mem_sleep. - In "Windows" mode there is only "s2idle" offered in /sys/power/mem_sleep. That is by default no matter if the OEM offers S3 or S2idle /sys/power/mem_sleep will contain "s2idle", but on AMD platforms "s2idle" only works if the hardware has been configured properly by the firmware. The outward indications of this being configured properly are the FADT low power idle bit being set and the uPEP ACPI device being populated, which is what this patch now checks for. So now if a user has the firmware of the machine configured for S3 then they will only see "deep" on AMD systems. ** Affects: hwe-next Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid ** Affects: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu Impish) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu Impish) Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid ** Tags: amd oem-priority originate-from-1956572 ** Tags added: amd oem-priority originate-from-1956572 ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Impish) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Focal) Status: New => Invalid ** Changed in: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu Impish) Status: New => Invalid ** Changed in: linux-oem-5.14 (Ubuntu Jammy) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961646 Title: On AMD platforms s2idle may not work w/o proper FW To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hwe-next/+bug/1961646/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Later Ubuntu kernels have had a fix for this for some time. Same for the vanilla Linux source. Alas, there's still no fix for the sound on the 16ITHg6. You can only get the left channel out of both the left and right speakers, and you'll lose sound going to sleep. The version of shim-signed that you were upgrading to is the release version of shim-signed in 18.04. This version of shim-signed cannot be supported; it is 4 years old, and missing all security updates to shim that have been released in the past 4 years. Re: [Bug 1951698] Re: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved
The output of firefox --version is Mozilla Firefox 97.0 and the package is 97.0+build2-0ubuntu0.21.10.1 amd64 One more thing: I have a bunch of folders in my bookmark taskbar, which means when I pull something out, I need to go back and forth a bit to find a free place where I can drop the icon taken from another folder. When trying a few more times, I succeeded in one of 20 or so cases when I was very quick. So it seems to be either a timing issue or an issue that on a very low level when I'm hovering over another folder on my "way out" to the place where I want to drop the icon the strange effect of "losing the grip" (I hope it's understandable how I describe this) happens... This problem does not exist in X11. There, I can just drag my icon, take all the time I need, let it "travel" over the whole taskbar or even firefox window back and forth until I decide to let the mouse button go so it drops where I just put it to. I also have the general impression that my mouse is a bit faster than on X. But this is really hard to measure exactly and probably not relevant for the issue at hand. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1951698 Title: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/1951698/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 1951698] Re: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved
The Bug in the exact way as described originally is gone. I *can* move items *inside* the bookmark toolbar folder up and down. That being said, the handling of bookmark icons and folder still is not "normal" as in X11 sessions! In an X session, I can move Icons also in and out of folders, into subfolders in a taskbar folder, and back again. I can move an Icon from a taskbar bookmark folder directly to the taskbar. Under Wayland I can Move things *inside* a folder, but not back! This is valid from task bar into a main taskbar folder, but not back, and inside a taskbar folder into a subfolder - but not back. On the way back, there is a shortin blinking blue line showing where the icon is about to drop, but before i can let the mouse go to let it drop in that place, the icon goes back into it's original place in the folder. Not sure if I should open a new Bug for that, its probably technically the same area where the bug must hide, and very close to the originally described behaviour, only that up and down works now. [Bug 1914278] Re: Kernel updates marked as "manually installed", prevents old kernels cleanup
Hi Julian, Sounds good, but there's one caveat: If the Kubuntu users receive a packagekit upgrade via Discover, packagekit will attempt to upgrade itself while running. This causes a packagekit crash, from which the recovery is via the command line: sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt --fix-broken install sudo apt full-upgrade At this point, everything returns to normal, but for many users this can be problematic, especially in a stable release. While not a regression per se, the process would be problematic for Kubuntu users as they're the ones in Focal using this upgrade method. More advanced users can navigate this, but non-technical users would have a rough time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1914278 Title: Kernel updates marked as "manually installed", prevents old kernels cleanup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/packagekit/+bug/1914278/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1960089] Re: Request 2.0 GiB Boot Partition for 22.04LTS FDE
** Description changed: Summary: We propose to increase the LVM /boot partition to 2.0 GiB. This provides the space needed so advanced users can use best practice to manage up to 3 kernel flavors. The current /boot partition on 20.04 and 22.04 is limited to just 705MiB, which allows only 3 concurrent kernels before filling and sometimes locking the system (each image set takes 180MiB total; 4 x 180 = 720MiB > 705MiB). Reasoning: Best practice recommends users keep at least two version of each kernel flavor in the /boot directory. If a user has 3 kernel flavors installed (e.g. oem, generic-hwe, and lowlatency-hwe), then one needs to reserve room for 2 x 3 = 6 kernels. The system needs the headroom of at least two additional kernels during any automated clean-up process due to package removal scheduling. I propose to also reserve room for 2 additional kernels as a safety measure. Thus the total recommend available space should accommodate 10 kernels. Each kernel file set takes up 180MiB in the /boot partition when used with Nvidia driver modules. These files include initrd.img, system.map, and vmlinuz. With future kernel and module growth, this may surpass 200MiB soon. Therefore, we suggest planning for 200M for each kernel. We therefore request a total LVM /boot partition size of 10 image x - 200MiB = 2.0 GiB. + 200MiB = 2.0GiB. Other Considerations: When unattended-upgrades works correctly (which does not yet employ best practice), we have seen users with just a single kernel flavor over-fill their /boot partitions. This is because unattended-upgrades can retain up to 4 kernels, while the /boot partition is only large enough for 3. I am currently working with others to improve the unattended-upgrades algorithm to use best practice. The installer could allow users to resize the /boot partition during - installation. In this case, we highly recommend a 2.0 GB default for the + installation. In this case, we highly recommend a 2.0GiB default for the reasons outlined above. Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug.
