[Bug 2063353] Re: [SRU] plasma-discover backends race condition cause GUI not to load
I think I can now report we can reliably repeat this in a live environment. I re-ran the aforementioned script in a freshly booted live environment (I had been reusing the same one all throughout the chronology of the last comment) and was able to reproduce the behavior, more or less. After 300 tests, I had amassed 103 failures, amounting to a 34.33% failure rate. It seems you need to run `plasma-discover --backends packagekit- backend,snap-backend` at least 5-6 times before you are going to get a failure. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2063353 Title: [SRU] plasma-discover backends race condition cause GUI not to load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-discover/+bug/2063353/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 2063353] Re: [SRU] plasma-discover backends race condition cause GUI not to load
This is a difficult one to reproduce consistently, but it is most certainly an issue. I had a relatively fresh installation and went through the following to get it to happen (meaning it worked every time until the last line): plasma-discover --backends packagekit-backend plasma-discover --backends snap-backend plasma-discover --backends snap-backend,packagekit-backend plasma-discover --backends packagekit-backend,snap-backend plasma-discover plasma-discover plasma-discover --backends packagekit-backend,snap-backend Using a live ISO, I made a little script to continuously run through that pattern and was actually able to get it to fail eventually. I found that the failures only occurred with the packagekit-backend,snap-backend call. I then modified the script to only do this one call and keep track of the total number of tests and total number of failures (as tested by checking to see if the window was open by grepping for Discover in `wmctrl -lp` after a sensible wait time) and was able to reproduce with some degree of regularity. In particular, after 300 tests, I had amassed 113 failures, amounting to a 37.7% failure rate. Definitely a race condition seemingly related to threading if the upstream bug is to be believed. This is with Lubuntu 24.04 in an X session and a generic kernel, I might add. ** Changed in: plasma-discover (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2063353 Title: [SRU] plasma-discover backends race condition cause GUI not to load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-discover/+bug/2063353/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1682927] Re: lubuntu-rc.xml config breaks focusNew config
So first off, ArchLinux has recommended that same behavior since 2013, particular towards Firefox: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Openbox&oldid=251002#Windows_load_behind_the_active_window This was added to the Lubuntu default configuration in 2016: https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-default-settings/commit/?id=2f54149674cf11b0455802e513a1738649714670 It sounds like it was done specifically to resolve an issue with pcmanfm opening terminals and not focusing the terminals despite having focusNew set to yes. This might still an issue in pcmanfm, I don't know. Luckily, for Lubuntu, we use pcmanfm-qt. [Bug 2064180] [NEW] calamares-finish-oem.desktop is untrusted
Public bug reported: The UX when finishing/personalizing an OEM install of Lubuntu (and most likely, Kubuntu and Ubuntu Unity) is a little substandard because: 1. The Desktop Entry on the Desktop to start the process is untrusted 2. The default preferences prompt the user before executing The prompt by default includes three options: 1. Open 2. Execute 3. Cancel The difference between open and execute is not immediately obvious to everyone. Should they choose the first option (open) it opens in the text editor (Featherpad) which is *definitely* not what the user wants. So, the solution is rather simple: gio set calamares-finish-oem.desktop metadata::trusted true This needs to be done before pcmanfm-qt is started or pcmanfm-qt needs to be restarted for this change to be picked up. I'm confident this has to do with the switch to deb822 sources. With Noble, the deb822-compliant /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources exists, but /etc/apt/sources.list does not. I created it with some relevant lines (not deb822-compliant, of course) and reopened software- properties-qt and found that the relevant lines in the first panel were checked as expected. [Bug 2059907] Re: missing option to erase and use the whole drive
Since I've observed a successful install with a cleanly closed Calamares leave the target partition mounted, I'm concerned there's a fundamental bug in the umount module. [Bug 2062060] Re: Calamares automatically creates swapfile with manual partitioning without any warning
I'm slowing my roll about changing the configuration. After discussing this further, there are a couple reasons why this is probably bad: 1. It will mean that users used to using the Erase Disk option in Lubuntu will not get a swapfile by default. This goes against expected behavior. 2. Ubiquity installs a swapfile by default, so we'd be deviating from the canonical behavior in Ubuntu. 3. It's likely much easier to get a user doing manual partitioning (who we assume is a bit more sophisticated) to remove a swapfile than it is to get a less experienced user to install one. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062060 Title: Calamares automatically creates swapfile with manual partitioning without any warning To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/calamares/+bug/2062060/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2062060] [NEW] Calamares automatically creates swapfile with manual partitioning without any warning
Public bug reported: In Calamares, when doing Manual Partitioning, there is no option to choose whether or not to create a swapfile as there is with the Erase Disk option. Instead, one would need to create it outside of the installer. However, a swapfile is created nonetheless. This is neither indicated in the Partitions panel, nor in the Summary panel, as one would expect. This appears to be caused by the `initialSwapChoice` value in /etc/calamares/modules/partition.conf which is set to `file`. Changing it to `none` eliminates the issue. So there are two things that need to be fixed here: 1. Calamares itself needs a change, including one or more of: 1. Provide an option in Manual Partitioning to choose swapfile options 2. Show the creation of swapfiles in the Summary panel 3. Don't consider the value of `initialSwapChoice` when doing Manual Partitioning 2. calamares-settings-ubuntu should change the value of `initialSwapChoice` to `none`, at least while these bugs in Calamares exist ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 24.04 Package: calamares 3.3.5-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 6.8.0-22.22-generic 6.8.1 Uname: Linux 6.8.0-22-generic x86_64 .etc.calamares.modules.after_bootloader_context.conf: --- dontChroot: false timeout: 120 firmwareType: "*": "-rm ${ROOT}/home/${USER}/Desktop/lubuntu-calamares.desktop" .etc.calamares.modules.finished.conf: --- restartNowMode: user-checked restartNowCommand: "systemctl -i reboot" .etc.calamares.modules.fstab.conf: crypttabOptions: luks,keyscript=/bin/cat efiMountOptions: umask=0077 .etc.calamares.modules.shellprocess_logs.conf: --- dontChroot: true timeout: 30 script: - calamares-logs-helper ${ROOT} .etc.calamares.modules.unpackfs.conf: --- unpack: - source: "/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs" sourcefs: "squashfs" destination: "" ApportVersion: 2.28.0-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CasperVersion: 1.496 CurrentDesktop: LXQt Date: Wed Apr 17 12:48:11 2024 LiveMediaBuild: Lubuntu 24.04 LTS "Noble Numbat" - Beta amd64 (20240415) RelatedPackageVersions: calamares-settings-ubuntu-common 1:24.04.28 calamares-settings-lubuntu 1:24.04.28 xfsprogs 6.6.0-1ubuntu2 btrfs-progs 6.6.3-1.1build2 SourcePackage: calamares UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: calamares (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: Triaged ** Affects: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: High Assignee: Lubuntu Developers (lubuntu-dev) Status: Triaged ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug noble ** Also affects: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: calamares (Ubuntu) Assignee: Lubuntu Developers (lubuntu-dev) => (unassigned) ** Changed in: calamares (Ubuntu) Milestone: ubuntu-24.04 => None ** Changed in: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Lubuntu Developers (lubuntu-dev) ** Changed in: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-24.04 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062060 Title: Calamares automatically creates swapfile with manual partitioning without any warning To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares/+bug/2062060/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2061681] Re: On kubuntu 24.04, after_bootloader_context claims to fail to remove installaton icon
Confirmed, both for Kubuntu and Lubuntu. For context, this does NOT cause the install to fail. The desktop file in question exists in three places: 1. On the Desktop of the live user 2. In /usr/share/applications of the live system 3. In /usr/share/applications of the squashfs Can't find it at all in the installed system. That said, it looks like removing this module will have no negative effect. As an aside, it does seem to be doing this to the chroot (the user is `user` not `kubuntu` as it is with the live system), but even were the file to exist, I think it would fail anyways. Note that the path starts with "//home." The way the configuration file is written, it's supposed to be `${ROOT}/home` but inevitably that variable is expanded to "/" so we get "//home" and not "/home" as expected. The proper way to do this would be with `${ROOT}home`. ** Changed in: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Changed in: calamares-settings-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2061681 Title: On kubuntu 24.04, after_bootloader_context claims to fail to remove installaton icon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares-settings-ubuntu/+bug/2061681/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2061150] Re: Selecting "full installation" crashes installation with "external command errors"
Some interesting observations: 1. This occurs on Kubuntu and Unity 2. This does NOT occur on Lubuntu 3. The apt cache (in /var/lib/apt/lists) that comes with the ISO only includes Packages files associated with the ISO on Kubuntu and Unity 4. The above makes installing virt-manager impossible without doing an update first in Kubuntu and Unity 5. The apt cache that comes with the ISO additionally includes Packages files for noble and noble-updates (at least universe) on Lubuntu 6. The above makes installing virt-manager possible without doing an update first in Lubuntu The only thing I don't understand: why is the apt cache more robust in Lubuntu? Maybe this is irrelevant. It seems that without Internet, this isn't even exposed as an option. Given that, we could probably just include an update. This probably makes sense. We include one with the third-party software, so we should include one with virt-manager (and also the option to apply updates). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2061150 Title: Selecting "full installation" crashes installation with "external command errors" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares-settings-ubuntu/+bug/2061150/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2017452] Re: On run, nautilus opens two windows instead of one
Wow, this one's weird. Some observations: 1. It only happens once. 2. It also happens if you click on the menu entry instead of using the runner. 3. Doesn't happen if you run `nautilus` in terminal. 4. The Exec line of the desktop file is `nautilus --new window`. 5. Doesn't happen if you run `nautilus --new window` in terminal.
