I also experience this issue, and as Hallvard Nygård (hnygard) pointed out, if I remove my external hardrive, the error goes aways as well. Also, i added -v to the ssh command in the /usr/share/qtcreator/ubuntu/scripts/qtc_device_run_app_click script so that I could get full errors listed in the SDK window.
