This still happens in Hardy Alpha 2. The wallpaper is shown instead of the terminal. I've gotten a similar error on my Acer Laptop with the Ubuntu Live Daily Build (Dec. 2, 2007). After the installation completes and I am asked whether I want to restart the PC or not, I chose yes. At this time the everything disappeared on the screen except for the Gutsy wallpaper. Little blue lines appeared at the top of the screen and after pressing enter, the CD ejected.
