Re: tRev
yes, REMO - a surprise to me. Not sure if that's a mistake or not, but it sure looks like tRev. You may have to re-enter your registration number again. Hold down option while starting the app and you can zap the prefs. Perhaps yours old license timed out or it needs to re-do it. REMO? WHat happened to our favorite scary beast? Kensington Trackball Works and Left Clicks in Revolution/tRev
Hi all. I started having problems with left clicking and since I just updated tRev I assumed (wrongly) that tRev may have cause the problem. If I click quickly above or below the elevator in a scrollbar, nothing happens. If I hold the mouse a bit longer like a half second or so, it seems to catch up and work. If I use another mouse all works fine. The problem occurs only when I use the Kensington Trackball. Not critical, but a bit annoying, and maybe an indicator that there may be some kind of incompatibility with the Kensington trackball software and Revolution/tRev. I know this isn't a backbreaker, and most of you have probably hit the delete button already, but for anyone still reading who has a Kensington trackball and the latest Kensington software installed, could you let me know of you are having the same problem? This could also manifest itself later in standalones, which I will test shortly. Re: tRev and Win Vista
A little background The biggest reason we added a free trial to tRev was so Windows users could make certain tRev ran on their machine. At first we did not want to sell a Windows version of tRev, but were strongly encouraged to do so by the revSelect management. Understandable. Cross platform being part of the Rev credo. This is a "philosophy" for which I'm starting to develop a distaste, btw. When we got tRev to run on Vista, we limited our support to just that platform. We did finally get it running on XP, Vista, 7. But then some machines irrespective of the Win OS, failed to communicate with Rev from tRev and vice versa after a couple script inspections. My attempts to fix this problem seem to have been choreographed by Charlie Chaplin. But I am very stubborn and will find a way to get this to work on Windows. Much of what I have said here I have sent to a handful of users plagued by the problem of tRev and one or more machines that couldn't start up properly or communicate with Rev to inspect scripts. I strongly recommend trial-ing tRev before buying it, if you are a Windows user. Re: tRev and Win Vista
Malte, Mark, et al... Yes, as I put to Len a couple days ago, I have had a hard time covering the different versions of Windows and the different versions of Rev. It's been sockets (primarily) and the general resistance that Rev seems to have in switching from one app to another on Windows. I have been completely re-doing the sockets and startup code for tRev. We actually have a new version that's been in test for a week, but the spotty coverage of Windows remains, unfortunately. [ANN] tRev Decoder lets you travel in time!
tRev users and others seeking solace, distraction, inspiration... I've got an interesting video for you to view: http://reveditor.com/the-decoder-lets-you-time-travel We've added a new feature to tRev's Decoder (modeless debugger). It now keeps a record of every time a tRev breakpoint gets refreshed with data. With this new feature, the Decoder will let you walk through iterations of a breakpoint with a snazzy, user interface. Once you see it, you'll slap your head and say..."Yeah, of course!" This feature is excellent for when you want to see the values of your variables during several iterations of a repeat loop. Since tRev uses database-driven, modeless debugging which is entirely separate from Rev IDE, you can go backward or forward in time to see what your code is--or was--doing. This is also great if you want to view your code's context from a week ago. Although tRev's Decoder does not take you into the future, using this feature makes you feel like you're in the future! Have a look, download it and try it, if you aren't already using tRev! Awfully sorry to disappoint you: I opened an earlier recension of my Devawriter stack (buckets of buttons, buckets of scripts) and did as you suggested - everything worked properly: RunRev 4.0 Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 I just did it, 30 seconds ago on this machine, and as expected, it happened. I did it a couple times this afternoon on a different computer when I just forgot that it was going to happen - I was working on redoing the application so as to eliminate the need to use print card, and needed to take the name of the fields into the script, so as to put the contents of them into a variable and then put this variable into a text file. Which, after manually reformatting it in rtf, I will then be able to open in a word processor and print in acceptable format. What a totally insane thing to be forced to be doing in the first place, but that is by the way. I have also had on earlier versions extreme slowdowns of the editor, where the cursor took a half second or so to move from one position in the line to another. Or typed characters showed up only after about a half second delay. This is a complete farce. Yes it is; however the reason for this particular farce may lie outwith the RunRev folks' lab in Edinburgh. I'm an amateur, I don't charge, and I'd never let stuff at this crap level of quality out the door. Do they do any testing at all? Meanwhile, on Planet Linux, we do not even have one editor that works. That's right folks, the built in editor, if you do cut and paste with it, freezes. [ANN] tRev Magic Menus: contextual, mouse-free menus
Script and object editor oriented folk: We have a marvelous video of Build 319 of tRev for you today: http://reveditor.com/magic-menus-look-ma-no-hands It shows how the new tRev Magic Menus work. Some details... New Magic Menu: - We needed a pop up menu for tRev lists and code that could be 100% keyboard initiated and controlled. - Right-click anywhere in a stacks, cards, clips, controls or handlers list and a magic menu will show. - The source code field also displays a magic menu with the right-click. - Type cmd+shift+m to make the magic menu appear/disappear without a mouse/trackpad. - Selection from the magic menu does what its name indicates. - Magic menu remembers what you last did in any magic menu. - Once open, magic menu can be operated with arrow keys to change selection and return to accept a choice. - Once open magic menu can be run using Quick Keys - Escape key will close magic menu without making a choice. Colorize while typing enhancements: - when you drag and drop text within the source code field, it now colorizes the dropped text. - when you type a matched quote within an unmatched parenthesis, the colorization works properly. General enhancements - home, end, page up and page down keys now passed to Revolution for handling. - the handler list selection will change to reflect the new selections in the code field when you do the following: + do a find from the find pane + type command+up/down arrow + type the home, end, page up, page down keys on extended keyboards - when in Rev and property inspector is in front, type escape to dismiss it Windows: - Always start tRev first. - Make certain the Rev IDE user extensions preference points to "My Revolution Enterprise" (use appropriate license type) Best, Jerry Daniels Use tRev's buy link during your 7 day free trial to get 20% off: http://reveditor.com/tag/shouldiswitch ___ use-revolution mailing list use-revolution@lists.runrev.com Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution

[ANN] tRev fetches object names during transparent inspection!
Fellow Revolutionistas, We have a new video posted on our site, and a new version of tRev available for download today. Check it out: http://reveditor.com/fetch-object-name-during-transparent-inspecti Here's an overview of today's new features: - Transparent Inspection will now fetch an object name * Control+space will fetch long name of object * Shift+control+space will fetch short name * If source code field is visible, fetched object name is insertedinto code * If no code showing, then fetched object name is saved to clipboard - tRev immune to socket closure by Rev IDE and plugins (even resetAll) - tRev works offline; even after opening the Rev dictionary - Decoder variable data with long strings no longer overwrites lines - Decoder var data now limited in length only by available memory - Hit escape really fast to close tabs. No problem. You can now download and use tRev for seven days without a reg code. Download links in the video post references above. Re: [ANN] tRev build 301 released!
Hi Jerry, No, that didn't happen, although it is possible that my scripts closed one of the tRev stacks that are needed for communication with tRev. It would be nice if you could solve this problem too, because closing stacks with messages locked is the main reason why Rev's script editor locks up. Of course, I usually make sure not to close IDE stacks, but when I receive stacks from clients, they may very well cause tRev's stacks to close. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer Economy-x-Talk is always looking for new software development projects. Mark, I happen to agree with you, objectively speaking—even though I wrote the tool you are praising. We have some improvements to Decoder in the works that will make it even more useful. Since we opened up the tRev API, I'm happy to also report that others are working on plugins to broaden tRev's capabilities. 1. There is a third party modal debugger under construction that will work with tRev (and Rev without tRev). 2. Also under development, a plugin for tRev that will let you write, check syntax, decode and deploy On-Rev CGI scripts. [ANN] tRev now sporting 'background' tabs!
Lovers of tabbed browsing of scripts, This week's video shows you how to open scripts to objects in new tabs while remaining in the current tab. http://reveditor.com/background-tabs-open-a-tab-without-going-ther Here are the details along with other improvements... New Background Tabs - Now you can open a tab to another object while staying in your current tab. - This allows you to keep working in the browser or on a script. - Use command key (control on PCs) to open a tab without going to it. - Works on Browser line items, links-to-handlers in code, and the scratchpad. - Command+double-clicking a line item in Browser no longer edits name of line item. Easier Scratch pad locking - When scratch pad is unlocked, escape key locks it. Fixed - If tRev thinks it's offline on startup, it now tries again. - Scratch Pad contents now reliably preserved from session-to-session. - When in zoom mode, controls in list can now be renamed. - When in zoom mode and controls being renamed, escape key now exits renaming. Andrew, It might be a faulty install. Quit tRev, quit Rev and then launch tRev and immediately thereafter hold down the alt key. This will force a fresh install. It's possible that there might also be an issue with an IP utility, firewall, etc. that interferes with updates. Rare, but it happens and we can deal with it. Re: [ANN] Move controls in tRev Object Browser with the new ZOOM!
Bob, Glad you are grooving on tRev. tRev has definitely changed the way I personally develop apps, mentor and work on projects for people. But the area where I've seen the most change in my own habits is in the debugging arena. I used to debug in GLX2's and Rev's modal debugger a lot. I was quite dependent upon it. In fact, I think I was using it as part of my coding environment. My code got sloppier—I figured, "Hey, I'll catch any problems in the debugger." Time spent coding was, well surprisingly lengthy. It would wear me out. I didn't realize it at the time, but in retrospect, that's what I think was happening. I'd have to say that using tRev has changed my coding habits in general. 1. I spend much less time coding. 2. I spend about 80 to 90% less time debugging now as well. Why is that? I was somewhat mystified by this discovery, myself. Here's what I think has happened: my mind started working differently when I started using tRev. I really organize my code in the folders it provides in the handler lists, especially since I can drag and drop handlers wherever I like in the handler list's folders. I can actually find my handlers—even from older projects. The scratch pad containing links of frequently-worked handlers helps me find the handlers I'm working on, as do the links to handlers peppered through out my code, thanks to tRev. The biggest thing I discovered about coding in RevTalk and xTalk is this: it's about the handlers. How you get to them, how you organize them. The stats function in tRev even tells me my average handler size in a script. If the lines per handler is getting too big in a script, then I know I'm asking for rough sledding and wasting time. Coding in tRev is ALL about the handlers. When I realized this, I slapped my forehead and said: "It's the handlers, stupid!" tRev has puts me in a better frame of mind: simple order. That's how I'd describe it. tRev has really made it easier and encouraged me by its example (you could say). It's easier to follow my own simple coding standards (naming vars with good names, not using nested functions, indexing repeats with var names, not "x", etc.). And the autocomplete feature really cut down on typos. So, firstly, my need to debug is less, because my code was getting better. Then, when I did debug in tRev (we call it "decoding"), one glance at the decoder and errors seemed to jump out at me. Most of the time I don't even step through the breakpoints. That said, our decoder (a modeless debugger that appears after a script has run with an historical record stored in a database of breakpoints) still has some features coming. We are working on better support for multi-dimensional arrays and fixing some display anomalies. We're also adding support for breakpoints in repeat loops that let you walk through the iterations of variable content in a loop— after the code has run, of course. The biggest advantage of the debugger: its design/architecture keeps it completely out of Rev's way. It cannot really crash Rev or tRev. It's like a good doctor that "does no harm." People using tRev are challenged by the decoder because it is a completely different model. There is no debugger like it. But once you get to using it, and let it work on your head, you'll find some real rewards. I am a very productive 61 year old coder and developer. You see here on this list just how often I update tRev with new features. I also do a significant amount of mentoring and project work for others. I also have a life with my family, community and friends outside of the technical world. But since using tRev, I spend less time coding/developing and much more time enjoying it, blogging about it. tRev seems to give me a certain clarity of mind that GLX2, Galaxy, Constellation and Rev script editors did not. I have to second David's comments. TRev is coming together nicely, a piece at a time. The new fixed Browser tab is a welcome improvement over the previous "Tab" implementation. [ANN] Need more detail in tRev card snaps? ZOOM!
tRev Featue Friday aficionados, We have had Card Snaphots in the tRev Object Browser for some time now. They are an excellent way to find a control in the browser when you don't know its name. But snaps are often miniatures of the actual card, making their smaller controls difficult to view. Over-miniaturized card snaps are no longer a problem. There is now a small zoom button at the top left of all card snaps in tRev. Just click the zoom button to zoom and unzoom your snaps. There is also a Zoom Snaps menu item with its short cut under the View menu. OK, that's even weirder. Prior to hitting the Send button my reply had nothing in it about: Enter your Apple ID and password to view this document. Yet another line that just magically appeared. Weird. So, just to clarify. I followed the link in your email to your blog page. >From there I followed the Quickstart link to the iWork.com page. At that point I got a simple webpage that stated (and this time I'll type it myself): Document doesn't exist. The document your requested doesn't exist or is no longer active. There were no buttons, no login prompts (I do have an Apple ID), nothing but simple text and an apple logo at the bottom. This was in Firefox. I just tried in Safari and it's basically the same, although Safari had the waterwheel cursor (the one you get on intial startup or shutdown) for about 5 seconds, under the Document doesn't exist line before coming up with the last line about no longer active. Want your script editor to do what YOU'D like it to do? You can. Watch me add a couple plugins: http://reveditor.com/write-your-own-plugins-for-trev In the days to come, I'll be creating some simple, useful plugins (free) for you, and posting them in our plugins store. [ANN] Scratch Pad, Minimize, Multiple Instances for tRev
Friends, Amidst the cheer of the holidays, the MegaBundle and other goings-on, friend Bill Marriott passed away after Robin Miller lost his daughter. MJ and I are deeply saddened by these losses to our community and to the Miller family. I trust and hope their prayers will all be heard. Bill loved passionately all aspects of the software lifecycle...development, design, marketing. We're dedicating this version of tRev to him. We just completed our most sweeping series of changes to tRev. Much of this is beneath the covers. Let's start with what you can see. We now have a way for you to keep track of the handlers on which you're working. It's called the Scratch Pad. The Scratch Pad is simply a list of links to your favorite handlers. - It persists from session-to-session. - It is there whether in code editor or object browser mode. - It can be edited in-situ or through its own editor. There's a nice slide show and a video of the Scratch Pad in action: http://reveditor.com/scratch-pad-links-to-your-fav-handlers tRev is No Longer a Palette I've made tRev's window into a standard window--it was a palette. Now you can minimize, maximize, close...all in very standard ways across both platforms. On Windows, when you iconify or uniconify Revolution IDE, tRev iconizes or uniconizes right along with it. Basic Architectural Revamp I've also redone the tRev application itself and its file architecture so that... - You can run multiple instances of tRev/Rev pairs (up to 100). - There is now only one components folder. - Least-used ports are employed during our inter-app communication. Proxy Support I've also added support for HTTP proxy servers in the prefs and whenever you encounter connection problems. That's about it. Eric Sciolli wrote: Hello I've downloaded last version of tRev but when I try to open it on macosx 10.6.2 it closes suddenly; does someone encountered this problem? The tech queue is getting reports about failed OS X builds occasionally. I haven't figured out why but the symptoms are what you describe. Sometimes it works if you do this: Click on the afflicted application to select it in the Finder Either click the application while holding the control key, or use the "Action" menu (the icon looks like a gear) to access the option "Show Package Contents" Open the "Contents" folder therein, and then find the "MacOS" folder Modify the permissions on this folder to give it "execute" permissions for all users. Do this by opening the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) and typing the following command (don't press return afterward): sudo chmod 755 After typing this, drag the "MacOS" folder to the Terminal window -- its path should appear. Press return, and you will be prompted for your administrator password, which you should enter. The "MacOS" directory should now have read, write and execute priveleges for the owner, and read and execute privileges for the group and others. -- Jacqueline Landman Gay | jac...@hyperactivesw.com HyperActive Software | http://www.hyperactivesw.com ___ use-revolution mailing list use-revolution@lists.runrev.com Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution

[ANN] tRev Feature Friday - make bookmarks in handler list with handler tags
Dear tRev users and watchers, With our new handler tags feature, you can turn short comments within your code into bookmarks within your handler list. We have a short video showing how to make and use handler tags: http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-leave-bookmarks-in-handler-lis Handler Tags! - now you can tag your handlers by typing handler comments like this: --> my tag - place these special tag comments inside the handler, not outside with folder comments - handler tags show up in the handler list indented beneath their parent handler - these tags work like bookmarks within the handlers list - handlers tags are never sorted in the handler list - click a handler's tag in handler list and navigate quickly to a specific area within a large handler - handler tags themselves cannot be dragged, but are dragged when parent handler is dragged - using these tags beats folding control structures, IMHO Fixes: - leading spaces at top of handler are now removed when handler is formatted - removing these spaces making make the handler appear properly in the handler list - dropping a handler on its home line no longer leaves orange insertion bar - a home line drop will no longer select the first line of the script when it should not - after dragging and dropping text within editor's code field, the tab is now marked dirty Best, Jerry Daniels Want to edit something? XP :-( len For what it's worth, I have found that whenever something works on Vista/7 and not on XP (it's usually the other way around), greater than 9 times out of 10 it has nothing to do with versions of XP (Home Premium or Professional, etc.) or 64 bit or 32 bit, etc. It has to do with spaces in a file path. If you shell, or open process or pass a parameter to a process, it will work in Vista and not work in XP because of the spaces in the file path. Even if you are just writing to a user's Documents directory, in Vista this is *C:\Users\\Documents\* (notice no spaces unless a user put a space in their user name). But, in XP it's C:\Documents and Settings \\My Documents\. See all those spaces in the file path in XP? They wreak havoc when passed as params, etc. This is the main reason MS renamed directories like *Documents and Settings* to *ProgramData* and *My Documents* to *Documents* and *All Users* to *Default*. The answer is just enclose any file paths in quotes. So do *quote & "C:\" & quote*, and almost always your non-XP-working-Rev-app magically starts working on XP. Without this, it goes off into lala land. This just happened to me yesterday. I had something working perfectly in Vista but would not work on any XP machine. Luckily I remembered about spaces and quoting and got it working in short order. The other tip is even in Vista/7 avoid using directories that involve the user name as users will do things like firstNamelastName and this will cause the identical problem on Vista/7. It's why I recommend against using a user's Documents directory. [ANN] tRev Feature Friday: drag a handler to a new tab
Merry Christmas! That's right, we now have spring-loaded tabs in tRev! - Drag a handler over a tab and that tab opens. - Drop the handler wherever you like in the new tab's handler list. Watch this video to be amazed: http://reveditor.com/feature-friday-drag-a-handler-to-any-tab NOTE: tRev users do not need to update in order to use this feature. You have all had spring-loaded tabs for a week now. None of y'all found it, though! Bonus! - Dragging to a tab also works with folders. - You can copy (even folders)...by using option key. Use drag-to-a-tabs to extend your use of RevTalk: - Reuse: make a scrapbook "drag-from" stack of often-used handlers. - Inheritance: drag handlers up/down the message path for wider or selective use. The argument for switching to tRev has—over the last months—become quite compelling. What started as a modest, pre-release product has become a tool that extends the utility of the RevTalk language while simultaneously greatly improving developer productivity. We have 492 licenses sold, 26 Feature Fridays posted, and 86 posted articles on our site. Over 2,900 unique individual humans have visited our site, and they've viewed 15,400 pages. Why the interest in tRev? Here's why: - Handler links within scripts and across tabs - Search across all open tabs - Runs outside Revolution IDE (so what if Rev crashes?) - Decoder for modeless debugging (even dialogs!) - Seamlessly integrated Object Browser with inline name editing - Card snapshots within Browser - Drag and drop handlers within or across tabs - Drag and drop objects to relayer - Auto-complete - Folders for handlers - Transparent inspection (without leaving tRev!) - Chalkboard motif for sensitive eyes - Great interoperability with Revolution IDE - Auto-update components (often no restart!) - A spare, Zen mode without tooltips or headers/footers - Up to 20 scrollable tabs Excess tRev licenses situation... Those tRev users who--via the MegaBundle--find themselves with more than one license to tRev, should click the link above to learn about transferring your excess licenses to friends, colleagues, etc. We'd much rather have real users than just sales. Click the link above for details on this. It's toward the end of today's Feature Friday post. Thank you all for your business and interest.
