Re: [videoblogging] Open Source Dr DivX for Mac

2007-02-23 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Great news, Jim.

Relative to the other thread nearby on DivX that asks why vloggers don't use
this excellent compression tool (a big-time anime fan turned me on to DivX
years ago) I've a question for ya:

Do end users still have to install the DivX codec on their computers to be
able to see movies compressed with DivX?

If the answer is, Yes, you have to download and install DivX in order to
view DivX-encoded films, then that's my answer to the OP.

Sad but true that regular folks aren't willing to take that download and
install step in order to view a video.

That's why I post flashbased javascript vlog entries with links to QT movies
for RSS purposes. I'm too lazy to convert all the QT movies to .wmv too. It
would be cool if Blip.tv would make all conversions on our behalf (including
.wmv), but that's probably asking too darned much.

Re: [videoblogging] Open Source Dr DivX for Mac

2007-02-23 Thread Rupert
Apparently, Windows Media Player comes ready to play DivX. So that's
a big chunk right there. So - again - if it's so amazing and popular
as a compression format, why aren't more of us using it and having
DivX feeds/links?

I agree, Jan, I'm also too lazy to convert to wmv and it bothers me.
one of my problems is getting good quality/size converting to wmv on
my Mac. it always looks horrible, probably because i haven't worked
on the settings enough. any tips welcome. ironically, i started out
in wmv when i did www.WorkingForMyDad.com, and benefited from playing
to thousands of people on low end work PCs who wouldn't have seen it
if I'd put it in QT. I still have friends and relatives telling me
all the time that they can't see my new (Blip hosted) films in Flash,
and it's too hard to download. Flash! These are the (yawn)
barriers. It's almost enough to make me switch over to WMV (or
DivX??) if I wasn't just about to try and make more use of the
hotspotting and hyperlinking within QT files.

Would be *amazing* if Blip did it. It *is* asking too darned much,
as you say, but they're always good at rising to 'too darned much'
challenges. that's why we love them. flattery will get you everywhere.
