Ditto Myles and Lori. We just recently removed all of the overlays on DVDs
because of playback problems and problems with our security system. We still
continue to use them on our CDs.

Hi Farhad,

We've been using these overlays on our CDs and DVDs for many years now, and
have had no problems. Great care must be taken to center the overlay perfectly
on the disc, to avoid imbalance. I believe a search of the Videolib archives
will retrieve a couple of threads on this issue. Let me know if you have any

Re: [Videolib] Security stripping

2011-06-16 Thread Pamela Sue Reeves
We have a slightly different problem, ours set the gates off coming back
through, when the customer is returning them. This never happens with our
videos that are tattle-taped only DVDs. We have tried troubleshooting and we
are beginning to think it is the gates, or somehow the strip gets remagnitized
by the heat of the player. We use the book desensitizer (not the Barbie MRI
) on DVDs and haven't found very many instances of them setting the gate off
on the way out unless we forget to desensitize the item.

Apologies for cross-posting.

We have 3M equipment for sensitizing and desensitizing 3M security strips on
VHS tapes and DVDs. We have security pass-through gates that are supposed to go
off if an item that goes through the gate has not been desensitized, generally
designed to prevent stealing. I'm sure many of you use the same kind of system.

Our DVDs and tapes very routinely set off the gates, even though the materials
have been checked out, and supposedly desensitized. It is so frequent that the
folks watching the doors downstairs have quit stopping people because it
happens all the time... It does NOT, however, happen with books going through
the same gates, so thankfully, we are ruling out the very expensive gates as
the culprits.

We strip every DVD or VHS in a case. I am trying to troubleshoot what the
issue could be before I declare it the desensitizer and have to buy a new one.
I think it could be user error, the strips, maybe the placement of the strips?,
the cases (standard plastic), or the desensitizer. Has anyone else had this
issue? How did you troubleshoot it? What did you find that I could try?
Thanks very much for any thoughts on this...jen

You didn't state who the vendor was, and who the producer was.
If all are Canadian, then classroom rights in Canada were not sold with the
item. That doesn't mean they can't
be obtained, for an additional fee. Just that the item in hand is for Home Use.
Legal to put in your collection,
but what are the restrictions for the U.S. buyer? You don't know.
The vendor might not have the rights to sell outside Canada, but somehow your
purchase slipped through.
Or, if the video is US-produced, then it can be used in face-to-face teaching
in the US, but not in Canada.

Bottom line is, you should go back to the vendor to clarify the rights. Better
to straighten this out before you
pay, if it's not too late.
As Jessica has said, Canadian law is different for classroom use, but you don't
care about Canadian classrooms,
you care about U.S. classroom use, so best to go back to the vendor and clarify.

[Videolib] DVD Canada Only

2010-12-07 Thread Pamela Sue Reeves
May or may not be a stupid question.

We purchased the DVD Miracle of Bern for an instructor and it has arrived, on
the back of the cover it says intended for private home use in Canada only.
Can I legally add this to the media collection?

Was there any warning/information when you ordered it? Where you asked to agree
to any conditions before the sale? If you bought this from a legimate place and
there was nothing regarding this before it arrived, it should not be a problem.
US law simply requires that it be a legal copy, beyond that it becomes a
contract issue between you and the seller. I would look back at the website or
wherever you got it from. Keep in mind that Canada does not have
any classroom exemption so that warning might have been meant for Canadian
institutions.

Bottom line is that sellers can restrict how their films are used, but only by
contract.
