What's Up With GMail's Spam Filtering?

2024-06-19 Thread lange85
Hi all,

Every once in a while I go into my Gmail Junk folder using the native mail
app on my phone. It's amazing what I find in there sometimes.
Unfortunately, I keep finding stuff that is posted to this list that should
have gone directly to my inbox but it is routed to the junk folder instead.
So why is Gmail doing that? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

RE: Mail Annoyance with Message Threads

2024-06-17 Thread lange85
Hi Alan,

You wrote:

I'm also using the native Mail app on the latest version of iOS but I'm not
following your question. You mention a new thread which I'm assuming is one in
your inbox containing multiple messages.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

But you don't say anything about expanding the thread which is what I first do.
After I expand the thread, I swipe down to the first message and let VoiceOver
speak the message without actually opening the message which I only do if the
message is too long to be spoken by my preview setting.

I don’t have previews turned on. Also, I never expand the thread and swipe down
to the first message as you described. I just double-tap on the thread and, it
it’s a brand-new thread, I assume that I’ll land in message 1, read it and go
on from there. Perhaps I should start using your method.

Mail Annoyance with Message Threads

2024-06-17 Thread lange85
Hi,

This situation has been around for years and I don't know what to do about
it. I'm running the native Mail app on an iPhone 12 Pro with the latest IOS.
I have Mail set up so that messages are threaded, which is particularly
useful on high-traffic mailing lists when I want to temporarily ignore or
trash a group of messages that don't interest me. Though this doesn't happen
consistently, when I open a brand-new thread, VoiceOver will say that I'm in
message 1 then immediately jump to message 2. I then have to use the rotor
to get to Messages and swipe back to message 1. Does anybody else experience
this and if so how did you solve it?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Apple Music: Getting An Accurate Count

2024-06-14 Thread lange85
Hi all,

I Love, love, Love Apple Music and have had it since it was introduced way
back when. Over the years I've amassed a huge library of music of all
styles, including classic rock, classical, country, jazz, bluegrass R and
all kinds of stuff. My old CD player died years ago, so I got rid of nearly
all my CD's and went online to replace my collection. I was talking to a
buddy of mine the other day and introduced him to Apple Music and he's
really diggin't it too. it occurred to me that I couldn't give him an
accurate count of the potentially hundreds or even thousands of albums that
I think that I've put into my library over the years. So I got into it
recently, sorted by artists, then by albums and by Songs. In Artists, I
showed 100 screens worth of stuff, and when I sorted by Albums, I got 1, 057
screens. When I sorted by Songs I got 4, 868 screens. This Is on my iPhone
12 Pro running the latest version of IOS. Is there a way that I can get an
accurate count of artists, albums and songs? I didn't see a way to do that,
but I think it would be really nice to get those counts. Is there a way to
do that without endlessly scrolling through the lists, which doesn't give me
what I want? Thanks for all of your suggestions. I appreciate it.

RE: learning to play guitar and other stringed instruments as a blind person

2024-06-03 Thread lange85
Hi all,

This is going to be a rather lengthy post, so don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

I was born in 1954. My parents gave me musical toys to play with as early as
when I was one-and-a-half years old, and I used to pick out tunes that I heard
on the radio or on television. One of those musical toys was a little plastic
guitar which I would tune up to a major chord. I was mystified by those little
ridges on the neck which I later learned were called frets and that pushing the
strings down behind those frets would let me go way beyond the chord that I’d
tuned the guitar to.

In 1963 I discovered the piano, and when my family would go to visit relatives
or friends, the first thing I’d do upon entering their houses would see if I
could find one to bang around on. Once I figured out the note relationships I
could then try to replicate what I hear on the radio, on TV or in church. My
folks got me started on piano lessons so in addition to learning a bit of
Braille music I got an early education in theory. But by then I got bit by the
rock ‘n roll bug and was fascinated by the sounds of the electric guitar on
records by the Beatles, Stones, Dave Clark Five, the Kinks and the Who. I
discovered some neighborhood kids who also played and loved rock music and we
actually put together a little rock band with me on keys. We did our first gig
at a bar mitzvah party in the spring of 1966 and gigged frequently throughout
that summer. Dad bought me a combo organ and an amp and that was my rig for a
number of years. Seems I’ve always had some sort of band to gig with both on
keyboards and guitar and I’m still doing it at age 70. Anyway, back then in
1966 the guys would leave their guitars and basses down in my basement where we
practiced, and I began to explore the guitar by ear and had all sorts of fun
figuring out how they worked. Playing organ was lots of fun but I knew that
some day I’d find a way to get my own guitar. In late 1967 two things happened
for me that strengthened my resolve to get a guitar. I heard WLS out of Chicago
playing Cream’s Sunshine of Your Love, and I’d never ever heard a guitar sound
like that. Then, shortly thereafter my local station in Kansas City, WHB, ran
their Tuesday night segment called Make It Or Break It, in which a brand-new
single was introduced. If the audience liked it it would go into heavy
rotation; if not, the DJ would break the single in half and throw it in the
trash. On the night in question, the new single was Foxey Lady by Jimi
Hendrix. . That was a total mindF**k for me and I said to myself, I wanna do
that. I loved the power of Eric’s and Jimi’s guitar sounds

BTW, Foxey Lady was broken in half and trashed much to my extreme chagrin.

Fast forward a few months and my sister’s boyfriend’s brother gave me a 1962
Gibson SG Junior which I still have to this day and I was free to set about
really learning the instrument. Trouble was, I learned it Jeff Healey-style,
playing overhand with the guitar lying on my lap. My bandmates gave me grief
about playing that way and showed me how to properly hold the guitar and proper
fingering. From then on, I was off and running. It was much easier to play
that way and imitate the likes of Eric, Jimi, Johnny Winter, Peter Frampton,
Leslie West, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, all of whom
influenced me in one way or another back then. I also picked up an acoustic
guitar and learned a bit about slide guitar and also fingerpicking, plus
different tunings used by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, David
Crosby and others. . That’s been loads of fun and challenging in the bargain.

I guess to sum it all up, my modus operandi has always been to try to figure
things out by ear and try to replicate what I’ve heard. If you’ve got the ear
for it, grab your axe, tune into as much music as you can and woodshed, just
play and play and play. Find some buddies to hang and jam with and go for it.
It can be a tremendous learning experience and a hell of a lot of fun.

Tom

I learnt to play the guitar first when my daughter’s primary school teacher
offered lunchtime lessons to parents and then I attended evening classes. I
started with basic guitar chords used in popular and rock songs but then went
onto classical guitar and only stopped when the others in the class started
learning to read music and I could no longer keep pace with them.

Hi Sieghard,

Funny timing indeed! I ran the update just after I saw your message. After
looking at a couple of dialogs which I closed, the new app wanted me to do a
software update for my Sonos speakers, which are the old Sonos 1. The firmware
update completed successfully and I’m happy to say that the speakers are back
in action, and, exploring the screen with VoiceOver seems to work okay. I’ve
got a lot of exploring to do, but I’ll take my time with that. I’ve got a lot
of other stuff that I need to do today. I look forward to hearing about how you

Funny timing, I was just composing my message about the app update. Depending
on how adventurous you are I would say you can update now, but there is
definitely a bit of a learning curve and some experimentation required. It is
definitely a lot better, though, maybe some others who have updated will post
their feedback and what they have discovered works and doesn't work.

Facebook App and Its Web Browser

2024-05-07 Thread lange85
Hi folks,

While using the Facebook app, I often encounter posts which will direct me
to various web pages which are often riddled with ads. Needless to say,
this can be a major pain to have to wade through. If the page is exceedingly
large and overrun with ads, things can get hopelessly bogged down and I have
to close the page. I'd much rather use Safari with its Reader View which
strips out the ads and offers a smoother reading experience. Is there a way
to tell IOS or the Facebook app that I don't want to use Facebook's
internal browser? If so, how can I do that? BTW, I'd rather not use the
Mobile Facebook web site. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Tom

RE: Native Mail app focus issues under iOS 13.2

2019-11-01 Thread lange85
Hi,

The “misspelled Words” item in the rotor is definitely a bug. Here’s what
someone at Applevis has to say about it.

There are numerous places system-wide where the Misspelled Words item will be
in the VoiceOver rotor's Action menu where this functionality is not available
(examples include when viewing a web page in Safari and when reading an email
in Mail). In some of these it is the default position of the VoiceOver rotor,
which is a frustrating hit on the user experience - for example when opening a
webpage in Safari and expecting to be able to immediately flick down to
navigate by heading.

Someone else on this list reported that it also occurs in the NFB Newsline app
when trying to navigate through newspapers by heading. I can definitely verify
this, as I experienced it this morning.

Hi All,

Alan, I haven't notice your thread issue because I usually open a thread with a
one finger double tap and read through the messages that way. ⠠⠓⠪⠐⠑⠂ I know
what you mean when exiting from a message or for me it occurs on a thread of
messages. When I return to the ⠍⠑⠎⠎⠁⠛⠑ list there is random behavior. Sometimes
it does focus on the message or thread I have just closed, but at other times
the focus is at the top or somewhere else on the message list. (Sometimes I
whimsically wonder if it has something ⠞⠕ do with the way I am holding the
⠏⠓⠐⠕⠲ :)) It is annoying, and I need to report it also. I was hoping that 13.2
would fix it, but it hasn't.

The other weird thing that happens for me is that when I am reading through a
thread message by message, when I turn the rotor ⠞⠕ to go to the "messages"
setting I always have to pass through "misspelled words." I have looked all
over to try to get rid of the "misspelled words" in the rotor with no luck.
Neither "Messages" nor "misspelled words" appear in the rotor list, so I can't
change their order. I searched in settings for "misspelled words" and couldn't
find any reference to it. Am I missing something or is this is just a bug?

Thanks for any help!

Take care and have fun!

Hi List,

I think this subject might have been previously discussed so I apologize as I
only upgraded to iOS 13.x on Tuesday of this week.

I use the native Mail app for reading my Gmail account emails and I have it set
to display messages in threaded mode. I'm noticing that when focus is on a
message group with multiple messages, that when I single finger swipe down and
select expand to open the list of messages in the group that focus jumps
several screens up or down rather than leaving me at the top of the opened list
as it did in iOS 12.4.1. I get similar screen jumps and loss of focus when I
single finger swipe to contract the opened thread.

I'm also noticing that when I open a single email that isn't part of a group,
that focus isn't on it any longer when I go back to my message list using
either the back button or the scrub gesture.

This loss of focus makes reading emails on my iPhone 8 a royal pain and I'm
wondering if others are experiencing it. If there is a workaround, I'd love to
hear it or if this is a known issue, I'd love to know that too. I plan on
writing Apple Accessibility to report this but I wanted to check with this list
first before doing that.

Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: Native Mail app focus issues under iOS 13.2

2019-11-01 Thread lange85
Hi Alan,

I’ve experienced similar issues with the native Mail app since IOS 13 came out.
I reported it to Apple Accessibility and they responded, saying that the
problem couldn’t be reproduced. I suspect that the guy who handled the
situation didn’t know what I was talking about and was basically clueless. I’ll
report it again, as reading mail can be a royal pain because of the focus
issues.

I also plan to report Braille display issues as well. I had thought that
Braille behavior had improved with 13.2, but there are still a number of issues
while using my Braille display, including VO crashing.

Subject: Native Mail app focus issues under iOS 13.2
