No further information provided, assuming the bug is a request to remove either
the excessive curves at the bottom of each post (fixed in changing
LiquidThreads to a linear system) or the horizontal lines (which will not be
removed). Closing as FIXED.

Could there be an Elapsed time: and Estimated time remaining: in the

Interesting idea. Remember that the text table can also be an external store,
so any implementation needs to keep that in mind.

The checksum field (MD5 hash of the content?) would probably be in the revision
table. It would also make the optimization of reusing text rows more feasible
(this probably wouldn't have too much of an impact on Wikipedia due to our
usage of gzip in external storage, but it could save a lot of space on
third-party wikis not using ES).

(In reply to comment #4)
I don't think a config option would be useful here. It would potentially
 break
copying content between wikis, e.g., Wikipedia.

I agree completely. This should either be fixed or not fixed, introducing a
variable here would just create incompatibilities between wikis and make
Import/Export unreliable.

(In reply to comment #2)
This might or might not have been a good idea to start with, but by now
 there's
way too much legacy content. Also, case-sensitivity of template parameters
matches case-sensitivity of the template names themselves. Given the
relatively marginal benefit of allowing case-insensitive parameters to begin
with (is it really hard to always use lowercase?), I would suggest WONTFIX.

I'm inclined to agree here. This seems like it would've been a great idea when
it was being designed, but it's too late now.

[Bug 21868] New: SMW Parser is missing grammar validation

2009-12-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21868

Summary: SMW Parser is missing grammar validation
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: critical
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Semantic MediaWiki
AssignedTo: mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org
ReportedBy: avino...@gmail.com

The SMW Parser seems to ignore grammar/syntax errors altogether. Instead of
issuing an error message, it's generating an impossibly-heavy DB query:

SELECT /* SMW::getQueryResult Avinoamr */  DISTINCT t0.smw_id AS
id,t0.smw_title AS t,t0.smw_namespace AS ns,t0.smw_iw AS iw,t0.smw_sortkey
FROM `smw_ids` AS t0 INNER JOIN `smw_ids` AS t2 ON t0.smw_id=t2.smw_id WHERE
t2.smw_iw!=':smw' AND t2.smw_iw!=':smw-redi' AND t2.smw_iw!=':smw-border' AND
t2.smw_iw!=':smw-intprop'  ORDER BY t0.smw_sortkey ASC  LIMIT 21

This query is obviously malformed, it doesn't try to match anything useful,
just filters out certain rows. On our current MediaWiki installation this query
takes more than 1 hour to complete.

I've noticed it's being generated by (1) using a bad syntax (try
[Field::-Value]]), or (2) by using the {#ask} parser function with an empty
query string (try {#ask:}).

Obviously, the user should be aware of what he's doing - but a couple of these
queries can really slow down the DBs for no reason.

I think it's a critical performance/stability bug. If I'm not mistaken, a
single user can pretty much crash several of the DB servers simply by running
these queries repeatedly.

I'm not certain what kind of parsing algorithm is being used (LL(1) ?), but I'm
sure grammar validation is part of it. If you wish, I volunteer to help with
developing this support - but I'd like to have a comprehensive understanding
and guidance before I begin.

By the way - another approach would be to check the Query object before
executing it. And if we realize that this meaningless SQL error will be
executed, we can just throw a non-informative Parsing exception. That's a more
quick dirty solution, in my opinion.

this is a bug with the upstream firefox video support. When issuing a play
request on a video that just got inserted into a page, the player appears to
play 1/4 of a second, stops playing to buffer more media then plays the rest of
the clip. I will try and get this fixed upstream as well as add a hack to the
javascript player to not issue a play request until it has fired the
canplaythough event or we have buffered a few seconds of the clip... (sometimes
the canplaythough event is not fired)

  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Site requests
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: hart...@videolan.org

Quoted from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jimbo_Walesoldid=332119074#Wikimedia_and_privacy_during_server_failures

During server outages, a page is returned that states This wiki has a
problem. It states that the server is down, the database cannot be accessed,
or whatever other problem the site is experiencing. In addition, it provides a
Google search box. This is not a problem.
However, the Google logo is served from Google's servers, which is a problem.
(Specifically, the file http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_40wht.gif;.) This
allows Google to record an entry into its logs every time I access Wikipedia
during a server outage (IP address, page accessed, date and time, etc.). The
Wikimedia privacy policy regarding IP addresses states When a visitor requests
or reads a page [...] The Wikimedia Foundation may keep raw logs of such
transactions, but these will not be published... There is no mention that
external parties will also record this information, or how they will treat that
information, though I think it's unacceptable to provide Google or any other
party this information (especially for logged in users for whom the privacy
policy explicitly states that IP address info will not be shared or disclosed).

--- Comment #15 from Brian McNeil brian.mcn...@wikinewsie.org 2009-12-16

This has *again* become very urgent for Wikinews.

A hack was introduced to have a hidden list of URLs with numbers in them on the
main page. Google is no longer picking these up and insists on the URL
containing a minimum of 3 digits. Redirects are not working.

Can this be addressed as a matter of urgency, or Amgine's proposed
patch/extension be seriously reviewed with a view to putting it into use.

Unless I am unable to I wish to reopen that for a proper review.

(From update of attachment 6745)
I do not know if this is obsolete, but it is urgently needed for enWN to
maintain a listing in Google News.

I understand it was previously given a half-assed review and the vital internal
SQL not security audited. This *needs* done. Wikinews must be listed in Google
News to generate user contributions from the competition that's coming up, and
Jimmy Wales doing WikiVoices next week on Wikinews where we want him to write
an article and get it listed in Google News.

I do not want a Skypecast recorded where I'm telling Jimmy, Uh, Yes, you need
to thing of a title with a three digit number in it so your article will appear
in Google News.

I think this originally was labelled as unlock move protection options or
something similar. But now protection is able to have additional protection
options, so it was rewritten as it is now. It (more or less) means unlock
additional/more protection options.

Just by 2-cents. No clue what the best wording would be :(

trouble as we only have one 'crat on gawiki :)

November 5, «15:13 logmsgbot: brion synchronized
php-1.5/wmf-config/InitialiseSettings.php 'enabling upload by URL for sysops on
all wikis'».
December 1, «15:20 apergos: temporarily turned off upload-by-url on

extension for fundraising».
We still have upload_by_url right on all wikis, but actual upload by URL is not
enabled.
