Supplementary characters cannot be encoded at all. So I *do* think we need to change the character encoding, but to what? Our databases run MariaDB 5.5, which supports a newer character encoding called 'utf8mb4', which offers true utf8 support. I'd strongly prefer that to 'binary', in the interest of being explicit and mitigating the chance that a client will default to some other value based on the system locale or what have you. But this then would leave Yuvi's issue unresolved: the EventLogging database would still be slightly different than the rest of the cluster. If the WMF infra is so problematic, then perhaps we should wrap it in a conditional, so that at least it will improve functionality for 'the rest of them' ? It could potentially fix the problem where people upload a new version of an image and some browsers don't purge the cached copy of the thumbnail by themselves. (We still need to tell some people to bypass their browser cache after 'upload new version' at times, even though I can't really see why a browser would 'not' send a request with the current setup. The buildHeaders() function should take into account rowspan when calculating
'longest' TR and collecting the TH's cells that will get the sorter added, for

I wrote a lua template for
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deployments that almost but
not quite works as an initial version. I'm a bit confused though -- it appears
that sometimes links are and sometimes not expanded.
I think my syntax everywhere is correct as it all works as standalone pieces.
Could this be because the scribunto version on wikitech appears to be a little
bit behind? (It's also missing the mw.text libraries...)

Per default, MySQL will apply case insensitive collation to fields with that type, removing the distinction between Foo, FOO and FoO. That distinction however is quite important, we might have distinct links to all of these. Note that this doesn't happen when setting up mediawiki in binary database mode, since then VARCHAR gets changed to VARBINARY automatically. But this should still work correctly for people using utf-8 mode. So: We can either declare this field to use binary collation, like we do for term_text in the wb_terms table: ips_page_title VARCHAR(255) BINARY NOT NULL. Or we could declare it to use case *sensitive* UTF-8 collation: ips_page_title VARCHAR(255) COLLATE utf8_unicode_520_ci NOT NULL.
