After lots of faff to organise it, the phone-in segment has been
canned, though it might be mentioned for 30 seconds in passing in the
Fix-It Friday segment.

So now all we need to do is find someone willing to keep an eye on the
list itself :-)

Hello all,

Pamela from the Ray D'Arcy Show has just dropped me a line to say they
are keen to still do the segment next week, especially if we can track
down an Irish Wikipedian who is keen and chatty. If anyone is interested
in taking part next Friday please do let me know.

Thanks and regards,

Stevie

Did they give any info about the nature of the segment? General
Wikipedia-in-Ireland stuff?

Re: [Wikimedia IE] Possible media opportunity - Today FM (Ireland)

2012-04-20 Thread Stevie Benton
It's partly that. They had a question from a listener asking how
Wikipedia gets up to date so quickly. The listener watched the Grand
National and wondered how old the winning jockey was, got to his
Wikipedia page and within two minutes of the end of the race his page
was updated with a mention of his victory.

There's scope to speak about the Wikipedia in Ireland too, could be a
good chance to encourage more people to get involved.

I told 'em the actual answer was "a volunteer editor was waiting on
the page to be the first to update it, just waiting to press the
button."

ga.wikipedia.org has had 86 people do anything at all this month.
There's lots of room there.

[Wikimedia IE] From Wikimedia UK - media opportunity

2012-04-20 Thread Stevie Benton

Hello Wikimedia Ireland,

I hope you're all well. I write from Wikimedia UK to offer a media
opportunity.

I received the below email this week from Today FM, a Dublin-based radio
station, and their Ray D'Arcy show:

"Hi there,

I hope this finds you well. I'm getting in touch from Today FM in Dublin
with an interesting question from a listener! It is as follows:

"Hi Ray and Gang!!
Can you fix something for me on fix it friday.how does wikipedia
update its information so fast?! i was watching the aintree grand
national and daryl jacob won the race. I wanted to see how old he was so
I typed his name into google and got the Wikipedia link and when I
opened it they had on his page that he was the winner of the 2012
aintree grand national! literally 2 minutes after he won the race! HOW
DO THEY DO IT!"

We're hoping to have an answer for Friday's show (9am to 12)"

I've been in touch with the station to suggest that we could get an
Irish Wikimedian on the show to talk a little about what Wikipedia is,
how it works ad how people can get involved. This is something that I
think could be fun for whoever takes part and a good chance to highlight
the work of the movement in Ireland and its volunteers. They're looking
for someone to be on the show between about 10am and 10.30 tomorrow.
Sorry for the short notice but they only just got back to me. If you're
keen to be involved, drop me a line and we'll work out the details.
Here's a link to the show's web page for those interested.

Many thanks,

Stevie

Hi David,

Actually I am, as well as one Irish WP editor. Unfortunately, I'm stuck on a
cruise ship off Mexico right now and largely incommunicado this week! :)

Best,
